9 Best Affordable Hotels in Kyoto | Condé Nast Traveler

"What began as straightforward budget lodging has been transformed into a compact gem under general manager Chie Nakamura: rooms measure roughly 215 to 260 sq ft and, though compact, are thoughtfully designed and remarkably quiet for a bustling street location. The hotel functions more like the home of a well-connected local friend—thanks to cultivated relationships with shop owners and restaurateurs—and solo travelers can opt for cozy tatami-mat rooms with single futons for a traditional experience." - Melinda Joe

Miru Kyoto Nishiki | Best places to stay in Kyoto

"If you’re after an old-Kyoto meets contemporary Japan vibe, geared to a hip crowd on a budget, this boutique hotel a block north of Nishiki Market in central Kyoto will hit the spot. Outside, the Miru mimics the look of a traditional machiya townhouse. Inside, the 23 rooms incorporate touches like paper screen windows or, in some cases, patches of tatami flooring. Just be aware they are on the small side – aimed firmly at couples and solo travellers. Along with good design on a budget, a major reason to opt for the Miru Nishiki is location – as well as the market, it’s a short walk to the lively Shijo-dori avenue, from where you could walk to the Gion geisha district or catch the bus and subway to almost everywhere worth seeing. A bonus – there are dozens of good restaurants and bars in the neighbourhood too. " - Rob Goss

The hotel Miru Kyoto Nishikiis awesome. The location is very close to Nishiki market, there are tons of food options as well as convenience stores nearby. They have laundry facilities on-site, and supply soap and fabric softener. They also offer luggage forwarding services. Every morning each person in your room gets a free croissant. The rooms are fairly normal by Japan standards. The beds are very comfortable, they have the normal amenities, microwave, mini fridge, etc. Bathroom is awesome, toilet with bidet and the water pressure and temperature in the shower is great. The best part? The staff. Super friendly, incredibly helpful, and very efficient. It's about a 1700 yen cab ride from Kyoto station. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough. Best hotel we have had since being in Japan. I will not hesitate to stay here again as I fully intend on visiting Kyoto again.

Chose to stay here in the summer out of sheer curiosity for the consistent 5 star ratings. How could the property achieve what hotels that are firmly in the 5 star category (and price range) can’t? Much has been said about the convenient location, proximity to food/cafes etc but I think what’s not been said enough is the quality of service. From check in to check out, every single interaction with front desk staff was so pleasant. One of them patiently helped me try to contact a sushi place in hopes of walking in and when that failed, gave me a personal recommendation for sushi which turned out great. Another took the initiative to share the city’s events calendar which led me to catching a summer parade I would have otherwise missed. The croissants on each level are a cute touch, grateful to have been able to pre-game breakfast! In a city chock full of accommodation options, it’s the people who represent it that set it apart, kudos to the folks who played a big part in upholding the standard. I’d choose Miru again without hesitation.

The hotel Miru Kyoto Nishiki was perfect for our 4 night stay in Kyoto. |Location was superb, a few steps from the Nishiki markets and only a few minutes stroll to the Main Street shopping area and Pontocho alley. |The hotel is spotlessly clean, the fresh croissants for guests each morning a thoughtful touch together with water bottles, replenished each day. Laundry facilities are provided free of charge and conveniently located.|The hotel staff were simply wonderful. Always keen to engage with you and eager to assist in any way. To the two gentlemen who checked us out earlier (and I’m sorry, I didn’t note your names) and helped us into the taxi, your kind words and your bows as our taxi departed touched us deeply and is something we will remember for a long time. |I cannot recommend the Miru Kyoto Nishiki and its outstanding staff highly enough. Thank you so much from us both

Our stay here couldn't have been better. Rooms were pretty big and the bed was very comfortable. There's also a free laundry machine we could use on the first floor, which is usually occupied during the day but we managed to do our laundry during the evening. Staff was very helpful if we needed anything. Location was probably the best part of the hotel. Nishiki Market is right around the corner and the neighbourhood is full of cafes, shops, and restaurants. About 10 min walk from the subway line.

We loved our stay at MIRU Kyoto Nishiki! The location couldn’t be better — right in downtown Kyoto, close to the subway, bus lines, and endless shops and restaurants. The hotel itself is clean, quiet, and charmingly boutique, with a peaceful atmosphere after busy days exploring.||The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, offering great local recommendations and always greeting us with a smile. Everything felt thoughtfully designed and well maintained.||We’ll definitely stay here again on our next trip to Kyoto — it’s the perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and Kyoto charm.

If there was a Miru in every city, I'd book it instantly. The best hotel we stayed in across our Japan trip (out of 5 hotels). The service is amazing & super friendly, the location is super convenient, the room is the biggest we've stayed in AND very clean!! Couldn't recommend more :D

The Hotel is very nice, clean, and the staff was extremely helpful, answering all our questions. They also helped us with the luggage delivery service and was excellent. The room was spotless, very spacious, and had every detail taken care of. The hotel even has a laundry machine available, which is super convenient. Highly recommended — I would definitely come back without hesitation.

Amazing stay!!! Service was completely fantastic - best we’ve ever had! ||Of course location and room and extras were all 10/10, but what really stood out was how great the team was for every question and extra bit of help, fully going above and beyond.||Will recommend to everyone I know who’ll be staying in Kyoto in the future, free croissants too!
