Where to Find Barbecue in Portland for Takeout or Delivery | Eater Portland

"I report that Mis Abuelos at Cartlandia is a one-stop shop for barbacoa and other slow-cooked meats like goat, beef, or lamb, with their barbacoa de cordero (super-tender lamb) served in tacos or with its braising liquid." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Yelp
First time visiting Cartlandia and Mis Abuelos was recommended to us. We ordered the PDX Burrito, 2 carnitas tacos, 1 asada taco and a carnitas quesadilla. We waited about 20 minutes for the food to come out even though it was pretty slow. Got home with the food and got started. The pros - the seasoning on everything was exceptional! The green and red sauces were also amazing and I used every last drop. The portions were good sized with plenty of meat. The cons - the asada meat was tough and I had to pull the unchewable pieces out - not a classy look. The asada taco was a slab of meat on the tortilla- again not as tender as hoped. While there were some great aspects about this food, I probably would not return.

Yelp
Delicious food! We tried their shrimp tacos, carne asada tacos and flan. The shrimp taco came with avocado! Cooked fresh to order and everything like avocado, shrimp and lime looked high quality. We will be regulars from now on! The flan is not a small serving :) They are friendly and currently have buzzer gadgets to tell you when your order is ready.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I'm usually pretty generous with the way I rate Restaurants. I really how important Yelp is to there success. In this case I'm giving Mis Abuelos a one rating. My wife and me orders a beef burrito and three curritos tacos. They were out of tacos Al pastor. The currito tacos were filled with under rendered pork skin fat some cilantro and raw onions. No taste at all and questionable as to whether I should eat it or not. My wife had the beef burrito and literally took one bite and said she couldn't eat anymore. I ate a few bites and the meet tasted like game meet. Very strange taste for beef. Needless to say it was unappetizing and the burrito ended up in the trash. We love Mexican food and have spent a fair amount of time working and eating food in OAXACA Mexico. Thai food truck missed the mark big time. We won't be eating any Mis Abuelos any more.

Yelp

Yelp
This place is gnarly. First and last time I'll come here. Soooooooooooo much fat in this asada burrito it was inedible. The wait time alone should have been a clue seeing as was the only person waiting for food and it took 20 minutes.

Yelp
Have you ever Mouth-Sexed a sandwich, before? Yeah. Neither have I... before today. So the plan was, just get something small, like a Road Sandwich, so we could keep on truckin & not die from starvation. Have you ever noticed that a plan is just a list of things that don't happen? The Torta Milanesa... Once you start eating, you're not gunna stop. Then some time later, you'll wake up. Under a haze of confusion. Surrounded by bits of wrapper and styrofoam. Your vision will be blurred. The car windows will be misted over from perspiration and breath. Your belt unbuckled. Pants hang loose. Sauce and drippings stain your fingers. In your backseat, Napkins are littered, discarded, like so many used condoms or drive-through memorabilia. You can't remember how long you've been parked here. If a cop rolled up now, could you talk your way out of this; could this be explained away sans embarrassment? The Avocado smeared over your mouth like lipstick stains? The heavy kiss of salsa on your skin; a capsaicin burn of a hickey above your collar. Don't let my mistake, be yours. You need some privacy. You wanna get alone with this Torta. My preference? Head up to Make-Out Point. That's where you'll find be me. Ssssteaming up some windows.

Yelp
You will Not be disappointed... order anything on the menu & you'll be happy! My favorites are the asada tacos. Everything is fresh & prepared by hand, & cooked to order. The best food cart at Cartlandia IMO.

Yelp
8Aug18 @ 11:45 One of many food trucks at cartlandia. Tucked off in the corner. We had a couple of tacos (pastor, pollo) and a carnitas Gordita. The tacos were okay but lacked double shells thus were impossible to pick up and had to be eaten with a fork. The pastor was good but there wasn't a lot of pollo on the pollo taco. The Gordita was very good with a nice crisp and tender tortilla. Lots of good meat and cheese made the whole thing quite tasty. Prices are quite reasonable and service was quick and friendly.

Carl S.

Yelp
This cart is completely legit! Very authentic options. We had the Barbacoa on a Gordita as well as on the huarache, both incredible. The Barbacoa is definitely the reason to come here. We also tried the consommé, which was very lamb-y and delicious. Another must. We also had to try the huitlacoche quesadilla, which was not as exciting as I had hoped, flavor wise but a solid preparation. I just thought that the huitlacoche would have a more distinct taste. Everything was super fresh and made to order. It all tasted of delicious fresh corn. Just great!

Yelp
Got the lamb plate. Super moist, tender and delicious lamb. Reminds me of kalua pig that is straight off the pig.

Yelp
I live close to these food carts and was pleasantly surprised. I have tried their tlacoyos and sopes - I found them to be delicious and unique in their own way. I appreciated their taste and the fact that this food is much more authentic - and remind me more of Mexico than say, a Don Pedro's restaurant for instance. I love getting their nopales and I am definitely making this a regular place to visit! Also, the front person was pleasant. My partner has gotten the tacos de barbacoa and has been very happy with his choices as well.

Yelp
Like the shrimp tacos here, big slice of avocado, a good deal for the price. Will have to try the rest of the menu one day, but for nothing up on the shrimp taco

Yelp
It's not often I leave lower than a three star review but unfortunately that is the case here. We were feeling hungry so we hit up Cartlandia and selected a few trucks to order from, this being one of them. We were really disappointed to try ordering and have them be out of pretty much anything we picked and were left with only a few meat options. Not only that but their menu showed an image of a 3 sope plate but the order only includes one so I opted for tacos. The asada was lacking flavor and very chewy but the tortillas tasted fresh. My husband's gordita was yummy but hard to enjoy having just eaten an amazing papusa from next door. Just a very underwhelming experience.

Yelp
2 sopes they were very good! made fresh at that moment and large size. Also they are NOT DEEP FRIED! they cook them on the comal. Black beans, flor de calabasa and corn mushroom. Along with 3 chillis torreados. $8 total. Yummy. This place makes some good food im looking forward to my next visit

Cris W.

Yelp
The food here is incredible. This cart turns out absolutely authentic, totally handmade, and utterly delicious food. My last order here was a huarache. Deliciously-spiced beans were spread over a tender masa shell, so big it took up two paper plates. Diced onion was sprinkled over the beans, then a roasted pepper was laid over the onions. The whole thing was topped with delicious melted cheese. The quesadillas are awesome, made with thick homemade tortillas and flavors you can't find elsewhere like epazote and huitlacoche. Support this wonderful business! A couple things you should know- Good food takes time, and they are usually busy. Be prepared to wait 20-25 minutes for your food- it's worth it. And their hours are irregular- they seem to be there most often in the afternoons, not always the evenings, even on weekends.

Yelp
The carnitas was a little dry and not that flavorful, the wait time for tacos is insane though about 10 minutes for 2 tacos. I've been to several taco places that will churn out 2 tacos in 60 seconds (if that) and much better quality! I really wanted to like this place but it's about average for their Tacos. I think they need to go to their abuelitas to learn how to make them right and make them fast. Considering we drove 30+ Minutes to come to "Cartlandia" we are pretty disappointed.

Kevin S.

Yelp
I find myself having a hard time leaving a 2 star review for a food cart in Portland as they are all usually amazing. But this place had ran out of the first two meat choices we wanted on our tacos. It took about 20 minutes to get our food and it was meh. Luckily, we had also ordered some pupusas from the place next door which were AMAZING. Pupusaria la Miguelena, go there instead.

Chris M.

Yelp
The owner is disrespectful of his customers and the business hours. He does not keeps his own word when he says he will open. Food is over priced and not even that good.
google avatar

Benny O.

Yelp
I got reccomended to go eat at your restaurant but I'm really dissapointed but it didn't tastes as the the consomé has to be tasted! I don't recommend itt
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Fantastic hand made quesadillas! Hand made flour tortillas, the tinga chicken was great! Definitely a great authentic Mexican cart! Also, home made horchata! Great place!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the Barbacoa Plato. It came with 1/2 lb barbacoa, 4 tortillas, onions, cilantro, lime, hot sauce and soup. The barbacoa was really good - I made tacos. But the soup was out of this world!! It had chick peas and potatoes in it, and it was super flavorful!

J C.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and ordered a burrito. I was not happy with this at all.. the rice was dry, the meat was not even cut up. After the second bite, I decided to trash it.

Yelp
This cart in Cartlandia prominently advertises Hidalgo style barbacoa, so of course I got a couple barbacoa tacos, along with a carnitas taco, a buche taco, and a squash blossom quesadilla. Everything was outstanding! Really, really good. And seriously authentic; there is stuff on the menu that one doesn't see often outside of Mexico, including huitlacoche, tlacoyos, and consomé de barbacoa (from what I understand, this is the soup that the lamb barbacoa drips into as it slowly cooks wrapped in maguey leaves). Some complicated and very tempting tortas are also offered. I'll certainly go back the next time I'm anywhere near this part of Portland.

Ney M.

Yelp
Very good and unique menu like Tlacoyos or Huitlacoche quesadilla. The Lamb tacos are delicious! It has been few years since the last time I ate Barbacoa and this one is one of the best in the Portland metro area. I am now a frequent costumer.
