We went to the children's class on Sunday morning. I've been researching different places for over a year and my main reasons for not enrolling at other places were:
1. Safety (I didn't want my kid being thrown 20 times in a row or more, I saw some kids limping after class),
2. Class size (having a large class is okay if the teacher has control but when they don't it's just too much chaos),
3. Fun (the kids should have fun while learning, we're not training them to be the next martial arts master we want them to learn how to protect themselves),
4. Not paying to play (we want the kids to advance on merits not on how much we pay per testing cycle. Trying to explain to your child that they are advancing on a schedule not on merit is hard to impossible which makes your child think they are martials arts geniuses),
5. Respect (we saw too many kids using what they learned to bully others. The teachers were adamant that the kids knew and had the fear of the googleyeyed spaghetti monster in them that they not use what they learn to hurt others).
Misfit Combat is amaze balls. Before we took the class both boys were almost in tears saying they didn't want to go. Afterwards they both said they liked it and definitely wanted to go back. The reasons why they liked it:
1. Small class size so it wasn't intimidating for them.
2. Fun class, not only learning basic forms but also playing games to help strengthen their body.
3. Not a lot of yelling. My kids have audio sensitivity so it wasn't loud music or yelling. "Just enough yelling" was how my kids put it.
4. Excellent teachers. The teachers both were teaching to each individual child's level and need. Some kids were apprehensive about kicking and punching and the teachers worked with that.
If you have a shy kid this is a great place to start them. They are super LGBTQ friendly so whatever your child identifies as they will be accepted.
To be honest the class looked so fun me and my husband are going to ask if we can join in next time. If you're interested they have drop-in classes for $25. It's worth it to try it out and show your kid that it can be fun.
