Why Jersey Is the Diner Capital of the Country - Eater NY

"Miss America diner is located in Jersey City’s West Side, right across the street from the Social Security office and across the Hackensack River from Newark. Built by the O’Mahony company of Elizabeth, the diner dates to 1940, but the current structure was installed in 1958, and has had a succession of Greek owners. It is long and nearly all metal, with an added dining room on the end that dates to the 90s. The pancakes were a bit on the rubbery side, and the butter wasn’t butter, but they were pretty good in the way pancakes always are. The happy waitress dish was tomato and bacon on slices of white bread with American cheese annealed to the top. The best thing was corned beef hash, more pureed than most, but with visible shreds of pink meat." - Robert Sietsema

In the morning I visited a charming diner housed in a 1942 classic stainless steel O'Mahany model, which immediately set the scene for a nostalgic experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with friendly staff that made me feel right at home. I ordered the omelette, which was expertly prepared—fluffy and packed with fresh ingredients. It came alongside a generous serving of crispy, golden hash browns that added the perfect crunch to each bite. The combination of the delicious food and the retro diner ambiance made for a delightful meal. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty breakfast or just looking to enjoy a classic diner experience, this spot certainly delivers on both fronts. The overall vibe, paired with the attentive service, makes it a place I’d definitely return to.

Google
Awesome diner from the classic era. Their breakfast was hearty and delicious. The service was warm and friendly. And there’s plenty of parking. I can’t wait to return!

WOWWWWWW this place was so good. And the people here are even better!! Loved our service and definitely will be back. The food was equally as great. The perfect spot!!!

Google
A cozy, traditional diner that's definitely worth a visit. It has a charming, family-friendly atmosphere where it feels like everyone knows each other. The food was delicious, and the servers were warm and welcoming. Yes, the decor is a bit dated, and the bathrooms could use an upgrade, but overall, I truly love this place. I’ll be sure to return whenever I’m in NJ.

Google
Excellent traditional diner. It was nice to experience what a diner should be like. It brought back plenty of memories of a favorite diner of mine from many years ago. It also looked the same. These places are traditional and should be protected. The only way to keep them alive is to patronize them and keep them busy. If not, they will fade away. Forget the VIP and visit Miss America. Your stomach will thank you.

Google
First time here definitely not the last. Drive by it constantly, on a recommendation I had to try their corn beef hash & Sinclair you are correct sir! It’s awesome! I would have taken a pic of it but it was so good I forgot too. Next time

As we were visiting the US, we wanted to have an authentic diner experience. This place did not disappoint! Our waiter was so friendly and all staff were polite. The breakfast was delicious and it arrived in a prompt manner. We went on a rainy day so it wasn’t too busy. We really enjoyed dining here.

Yelp
My favorite local greasy spoon. Tammy and Suzy are affable waitresses. The usual breakfast options satisfy. The gyros are terrific. Thank you Tony and rest in peace.

Yelp
It was an all-American experience today at the Miss America Diner. A New Jersey politician approached our table to introduce himself and ask if we lived in NJ. Some said yes, and some said no! I informed him I live in PA. The politician mentioned he has an uncle who practices medicine in PA. I knew of his uncle, who I knew as a pharma rep in Central PA. It's such a small world. Anyway, our food and service were terrific. For an all-American experience, diner staples like burgers and fries are the Best choice. A classic diner experience

Yelp
I never leave reviews, but the management of this place is something else and deserves 1 star for their rudeness and lack of basic human decency. We had an appointment at a nearby Social Security Administration office to get an SSN for our teenage daughter and accidentally parked our car in the diner's half-empty parking lot. We were in a hurry and didn't see the 'customers only' sign. While walking toward the SSA building, we saw the sign and decided to park the car elsewhere. After checking in for the SSA appointment, LITERALLY 3 MINUTES LATER (my dash cam recorded everything), I went back to move the car and saw it being lifted onto a tow truck. The tow truck driver refused to release the car unless I paid him $185. I went into the diner to talk to the management, explain myself, and ask them to release the car. After all, it was an honest mistake which we quickly realized and immediately tried to rectify. The manager didn't even listen, started yelling at me, and threatened to kick me out of the building. Long story short, they ended up towing away our car, and we had to pay what they asked to get it back. Stay away from this place; these people don't deserve your business.

Yelp
They are racist. And i saw roaches crawling along the backboard of my seating area. the food was ok but after seeing a roach crawling around where i have to eat of course im not gonna say that the door was top tier. They are extremely rude and the lady with the red hair specifically is rude and racist. A southeast asian family walked in to be seated and she was the one guiding them to their table. After being seated right next to the bathroom area they politely asked if they could be seated somewhere else and the lady proceeds to say "sit on the floor, how would i know where you wanna sit." initially i thought she was joking but then she just walked away and left them to find a seat on their own. Disgusting.

Yelp
My family and I went to Miss America Diner on November 9th, and got there sometime around 9:30 in the morning. The place was relatively busy, but despite our large party (6 adults and 1 child), they were able to accommodate us and gave us excellent service with a bright smile. All the food was excellent and the quality and freshness was noticeable in every bite. I had the Chicken and Waffles, and admittedly it was better than most places since they gave me an equal amount of both, most places tend to overwhelm with the chicken, but this one didn't. All of my family also devoured their meals, enjoying themselves very much. You could tell that the restaurant had maintained their original ambiance ever since opening 85 years ago. The architecture was reminiscent of old-school diners (which this one is) and indeed had the structure of an old train cart, as many diners at the time had, taking inspiration fron their predecessors. It was also relatively cheap, only $17 bucks a person who ordered a meal (my six-year old cousin shared a meal with his parents, but did enjoy his chocolate milk ). So if your looking for an old-school place with more economic prices, and a family-friendly ambiance. This is the place to go.

Yelp
Good breakfast classic diner nice prices, full American breakfast platters for 11-15 dollars.

Yelp
This is such a great neighborhood place! It's an authentic Old Time diner that's been here since the 40s. The service is personal, and there are many little touches that are lacking in so many other places. The sugar in the old fashioned sugar dispensers is turbinado, the breakfast sausages are traditional breakfast links. The owner and the chef come around to make sure that everyone is happy. There aren't many diners where that happens anymore. We stopped in for breakfast on Saturday morning and had fun perusing the menu. I decided on the 2 x 2 x 2, which featured two eggs, two pancakes & bacon or sausage. My friend ordered the sausage so I ordered the bacon. He ordered his eggs over and off, I ordered mine over medium. Both of us received them exactly how we like them. The food is great, the atmosphere is great, and it's always good to see that this place keeps soldiering on. They survived the economic downturn and now they've survived the pandemic. I think the neighborhood regulars love the place, and the influx of students from NJCU will keep them around for a very long time. Prices are extremely reasonable, too. So, if you're looking for a traditional, old fashioned diner in a real dining car, you have to check out Miss America.

Yelp
I love this diner. I enjoyed their breakfast. Waitress was friendly and gave good service. I would go back there again.

Yelp
Stoped in to pick up breakfast. The old school appearance of the dinner caught my attention. I ordered the western omelet that came with home fries. The home fries were raw and tasted horrible. The coffee was very bad as well. The two young waitresses in the front were extremely rude and clueless. Better off driving to Tops diner in Newark.
google avatar

Josiah R.

Yelp
They always have my food ready in time for pick up, they treat me well every time I walk in. Which I genuinely appreciate because sometimes I have a hard day and I don't feel well, but just getting to hear "how are you doing today" or "I hope you have a wonder day" goes a long way.

Yelp
Good food, good service, fair prices! Definitely a go to spot for diner/comfort food in Jersey City.

Yelp
Where does a tastemaker have lunch with one's 79 year old, loud, hard of hearing Italian father in Jersey City? Miss America Diner. Reminding us both things can be simple, authentic and endure the ultimate test of time. A meal for 2 can easily run under $20. Building itself is an Art Deco masterpiece complete with stainless steel exterior, terrazzo floors and booth seating. Make no mistake, gourmet food in any capacity is not served here. I assure you these are hearty versions of diner classics prepared properly with generous portions cooked simply. When you have real things to talk about and don't want to be rushed or shushed, being in a comfortable setting with practical service and classic no frills food is the perfect setting. Quite an extensive menu to boot. Dad wanted a "Health Salad." Remember those? One scoop of jello, fruit salad (preferably ambrosia) cottage cheese and some lettuce. He attempted to order it and the waitress replied "what? Sir, no one really orders that and we don't have any cottage cheese." So he went with a triple decker turkey club and I choose the garden omelette with Swiss cheese. I'm not even taking a star off for them not having this item. I'm including it in the review to reflect my experience. Hopefully next time we can come back and he can get his health salad! Proof the best things in life are (nearly) free. Worth a trip for the diner classics and Art Deco building which IMO should be preserved and landmarked as such.

Yelp
Had breakfast today and it was actually really good I would say the home frozen but otherwise everything looks good. she did forget to give us our straws but otherwise she was on top of it, quick and polite

Yelp
Great service and pleasant staff!! Food is delicious and parking is very convenient here! Highly recommend!

Janelle L.

Yelp
I wouldnt give it a star! My boyfriend and I arrived at 1pm and the hostess rudely said this place was closed!! Eventhough we checked and it said closing at 3pm. I agree with everyone else!! Dont waste your time. There are PLENTY of other amazing diners in town!
google avatar

Bianca C.

Yelp
I really love coming here. We're always treated so nicely it feels like going to a family members house. Waitresses are always polite. May have had one hiccup with an order in the past but other than that. Orders come out satisfactory. Lunch specials and breakfast specials are great! Bathrooms: Rather small , only two stalls but kept clean. Everyone on staff are wearing masks correctly . So happy they are able to have indoor dining again.

Yelp
I traveled to NJ with a few colleagues for a friends event for the weekend. We wanted to try out a nice diner before heading back home. We were greeted when we walked in and sat at a table. An older lady came and took our order and food was delivered maybe 15min after. Food wasnt so great. Myself and a friend asked for a breakfast special with no ham. However when we received it, it still had ham. The french toast was soggy and eggs were dry. At this point, im not even really upset because its whatever. However when we were handed the bill, we saw that we were charged incorrectly for drinks. Rewinding back, we saw that all of our meals came with a "small drink". When the older lady took our order, she ASKED us what did we want to drink. Again, were not from here, so were assuming that this is the small drink thats apart of the meal. Instead we were charged for large drinks. Let me say, i have no problem with paying for anything but we wanted to understand the charges that werent explained to us at all. The older lady had an attitude and responded: "well you didnt say you wanted a small so we automatically give you a large" Again, the menu offering stated we will receive a small drink. Not a large. It also doesnt say that i need to specify what size drink i wanted. So we asked for a manager, who he said his name is "Larry". When Larry approaches our table, this is exactly what he said: "you guys dont want to pay for the drinks?!" First of all as a manager, you should NEVER approach any paying customer that way. I am a manager myself and the way he handled the entire situation was highly unprofessional. Then asked us what did we have and said he's going to look at the order. When he came back, he said "oh she was completely wrong i fixed it". and gave us a new receipt. As he walked away, he shouted to us and said "wipe that attitude off our faces". seriously?! again, Larry is a manager. Very unprofessional establishment. This diner should seek to train their employees on how to speak and handle customers. Never once did my colleagues and I disrespect anyone in this diner. Were all very professional and handled this situation alot better than them. Lastly, for Larry, if this is your real name. You will never be more than a diner manager with the bad attitude that you have.

Yelp
Food is edible. And staff is very nice and charismatic. But even though there's better food in the area. They definitely have the best service in the area.
google avatar

Hannah T.

Yelp
The only real diner in Jersey City. How much more do I need to write so yelp can just accept the fact that that's all I need to say about this place, come try it.
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
I really like Miss America Diner. Friendly service, very Jersey vibe (in the best way), and tasty food. Recommended. Miss America Diner is located near some car dealership service stations in Jersey City, so I usually go there while I wait for my car to be repaired. I've only had breakfast there, but it's very solid. Eggs are good, coffee is diner coffee, which is not my favorite, but is fine. Recommend the pork sausage instead of the turkey sausage. But the **waffle** is the best I've had at any diner. Again--get the **waffle**! It's terrific.
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
Classic Diner. This is what Jersey is all about. Diners! Diners with counters, diners with vinyl booths, diners with stainless steel facade, diners that do classic dishes right. You can't go wrong with a burger, sandwich, any kinda breakfast, or a milkshake! The staff is incredibly friendly and it's a good sized location with ample parking as well! Which is a great feature for the area. Definitely my go to diner!

Casemiro P.

Yelp
They are holding on to that authentic American persona, the food is filling, nothing overboard with flavor given the lack of respect by all hostesses who display rude and discourteous behavior which reflected poorly over the entire visit. Instead of discreetly discussing who would serve our table the 2 waitresses began speaking to each other how both would not serve our table and ask other waitress to. Which was audible enough for us to hear? Next, those same waitresses continue to stare and look at us and speak to each other as if we were the ones out of place, next I ask one of the waitressee if we could get some coffee and she completely ignored, but the next girl, the one who was ask to wait our table was able to comply after she serve the other table while these waitresses walked back and forth not serving just staring and throwing shade. So after ordering a $60 to go meal, I decided to have a BLT only no fries while my friend had a bagel with jelly, we refilled no coffee and I used the facility, and didn't forget to tip my waitress. That young face, old talent go to go, her auntie too. But the new girl, she was nice she was courteous. 2 star deduction for failing to provide American service.
google avatar

Ben E.

Yelp
I have been a customer of this Diner for 20 years. Today I stopped by for lunch 2 hours before their usual weekend closing. When I got to the door a waitress came right over & informed me they were "closed". No explanation. When she told me they were closed she turned & walked away & didn't have the courtesy to respond to my question. What bad operations & customer service. Will now re-think my visits. As major media constantly cites the hardship on the food service industry in the COVID pandemic- Miss America Diner has no room to complain if this is their attitude & treatment of customers of 2 decades.

Lee D.

Yelp
2 Stars only because the waitress was great. Food was covered in grease to the point we couldn't even eat our meals.

Mary H.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible. I got a burger and the breakfast platter. It was dry the burger was like a hockey puck. It was almost inedible. Think of the worst frozen patty then cremating it. Everything is frozen and horribly cooked. The egg wasn't scrambled it was like a tough rubbery folded prop food. I can't believe how expensive the items are. For the price I would never ever order from here again. I had to order a whole different meal because I couldn't stomach this food. McDonald's has better food. Any fast food would be safer and more tasty.

Yelp
Had a great, fun Valentine's Days dinner with my love at this wonderful diner. We frequently have breakfast here, spot on NJ diner. BYOB....
google avatar

Piri X.

Yelp
Make sure you watch the tip.... waitresses are crooks. I didn't see the 40% tip until after leaving the diner.. luckily my bill was low, but that's probably why I didn't notice it...
google avatar

Shuxian X.

Yelp
I really don't understand why the rating is lower. Me and my bf and two of our friends came the other day and we ordered 4 sets of breakfast. Everything is good regarding to its affordable price: nice servants, big portion, good taste and comfortable seat.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Worst diner that we have been to in New Jersey, period. The management is inept. The food is undercooked and never right. After complaint was made to restaurant we were ridiculed and unhelped. This place is garbage and run by garbage. Spend your hard earned money someplace else.

Come Fork W.

Yelp
I don't believe in judging a restaurant off of one visit or meal I should say. But this place I have ordered from 3x . Safe to say it was my last meal with them. I ordered a Belgian waffle w/ beef sausage, scrambled egg with cheese and ice coffee light and sweet. As soon as I open my delivery bag as you will see in my photo I have ice coffee everywhere and soggy sugar packs. This is the only place that does not have tight lids on their drinks and does not at the very least put plastic wrap around the lid knowing it's delivery. I do not blame the delivery person. The restaurant knows better. Also light and sweet and i was sent only 4 soggy packs of sugar. Sausage and eggs were great that's why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. The waffle had such an after taste I could not finish it. The waffle had a foreign taste I can not put my finger on but it's my good. I will not eat from there again. Try it yourself and judge for yourself.

Yelp
You want a neighborhood joint that treats you like family. THIS IS THE PLACE.........Great food........Good Prices........Nostalgic feel.......Friendly owners/staff........seriously I e read the same reviews.....I consider myself a Diner Conisseur...NJ is the Diner State(known as) and this place is a keeper. The present owners are longtime restauranteurs with deep roots in Jersey City. With Covid19 it's so important to support local business. This place is worth saving. Stop by or do Grubhub. You won't be sorry. Tell them Big Sexy sent ya!!!!!

Corey U.

Yelp
Horrible service and food. The staff is outright rude. Strongly advise to stay away. Choose any place but here.
google avatar

Genesis R.

Yelp
Extremely rude service. Even the owner gave us attitude and was extremely unprofessional. Nothing more disappointing than a business who doesn't know how to treat people with respect. Would never waste money on such garbage
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
I ashamed to admit that I live around the corner and tonight was the first time I tried it. I got a takeout order of chicken noodle soup and a grilled cheese sandwich and was so glad I did. They were both done perfectly, on time and with no fuss (I even got yummy pickles!). Susie is the lady who answers the phone and she is BEYOND delightful. I cannot wait to work my way through the menu because good diner food at a fair price is truly a gift from heaven.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this spot!!! Classic diner with a typical diner fare menu. The waitresses on both visits were awesome and we will be back!
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Came in for breakfast one morning with my mom and girlfriend when we needed to use the laundromat a few streets away because our washer broke. I got the Miss America breakfast and it was HUGE. Sometimes places like this will just give you a huge plate of food to make the taste. Nope, not this diner. My meal was delicious and I left feeling like i was going to explode. The price for all that food was well worth my money, and I will be back whenever I'm looking for a good sit down breakfast!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
I recently placed an order for them through Uber Eats. Our food was never delivered. I called diner and they told me it's not their problem.

Yelp
Miss America diner is the best Diner in jersey city. The food is fresh and the staff is amazing. My favorite item was the burger with fries. So yummy! And the owners are the DOPEST! Thanks guys!

Yelp
Great place to eat & to hear the neighborhood. Family, fun, Entertaining, great place to have small or large meeting & eat. Plus it take you back to your child hood days,

Yelp
I've lived in jersey city my entire life (28 years) and this place has always been there. I finally ate there and the food was not great. I wouldn't recommend to eat anything here that isn't a simple plate of eggs and toast.

M M.

Yelp
One of the original Jersey City diners. In fact, one of the best restaurants still standing that serves good old fashioned homecooked meals. Order a cup of coffee to start. Then fill up on tuna salad on white bread with extra mayo and a side of fries with brown gravy. Life is good. No one rushes you to eat. No one waiting for your table and the service is the best!
google avatar

Annette S.

Yelp
EVERY time I've ordered from there (Gotten delivery or went to pick-up the food) they have messed up my order and have charged me for things I did not order. Service is eh. This recent order I ordered a Grilled Chicken Cesar Salad with no Croutons. What I got was a Chrilled Chicken Salad with Onion, Tomato, and Croutons. The fact that they can't get a simple right is outrageous.

Andie S.

Yelp
Great food (the grits are cooked exactly the way I like them and I go especially for them, but get there before 12pm or they will run out)! Very economical for the quality and quantity of food. Always clean and they have an awesome wait staff!! Their ice coffee, omelets and english muffins really, REALLY good too!

Yelp
If I can give a ZERO review I would. I was hungry and wanted to have a good diner breakfast. I parked in the parking lot and sat for a few minutes making a phone call. A middle aged man, about 5' 8', medium build, with long gray salt and pepper hair and a Terry cloth towel came to knock on my window and told me "You can't Park here! The lot not for parking to go across the street." I indicated my intentions and he just walked away. In my mind, I was like what was that? Here I am parked for a few minutes just about to walk in and had to take a call. That just blew my mind and I had to ask where exactly is this coming from? I walked inside and inquired why he would assume I was parking to go across the street. He said, "Because you have NY plates." What???? Wow... How prejudice!! I had to say "You single handedly turned me off to eating at this establishment." He yells out, "That's OK! I don't need your business! " I had to comment, "That was incredibly rude! That was incredibly rude!" I requested for his name and he refused to say. Wow.... I was appalled at his attitude. What happened to customer service?? Or how about asking if someone before jumping to dumb conclusions?? I was floored. Not even an apology for his mistake! Is this how New Jersey people are? Or was I just in a really ghetto part of town??? Bring your business elsewhere. Just wow! Incredible...

Yelp
Not sure why this establishment has such high ratings, but the experience my party received today was incredibly disappointing. My party all ordered specials, which included food and a small juice. The food was average, nothing great. The issue mostly occurred when it was time to pay the bill. After receiving the bill, drinks were charged separately and as a large. Just out of curiosity, due to the offerings on the menu, we inquired as to why we were charged separately and not like the special suggested (small juices). In return the waitress says that unless we specify we want a small juice that they will automatically charge for large, despite a small being apart of the special. How would people, who are also not from here, know about such assumption? We bring up to her that based off of the menu, our assumption would be that we would simply receive a small, especially because she asked us first what juice would be like. From there she calls the manager, Larry, over to further deal with the issue and he comes over. The first thing that he says is "So y'all don't want to pay for your drinks?" Incredibly disrespectful. We then explain the situation to Larry and he goes to check out our bill, realizing the waitress was indeed at fault. But, says as he walks away from the table after giving us the new bill "now wipe those attitudes off of your faces." What type of manager talks to their customers like this? As a person who works in customer service, I would never talk to anyone let alone a paying customers like this. Our inquiry was justified and reasonable, but the way the entire situation was handled was completely uncalled for.
