We had a reservation for early Friday night dinner. We were seated pretty quickly then waited...and waited...and waited. Finally I went to the front to tell her we'd been sitting there 15 minutes with no server coming by at all, no water, no drink order etc. She goes and finds a server who comes by and apologizes saying the server who covers that section isn't there so he'll help us instead. Once we had a server it was fine, he didn't do anything wrong but it's a management fail to seat someone somewhere there is no server assigned.
Fortunately, we had a couple minutes left before happy hour was over so we got to order happy hour drinks. I had the hurricane, hubby had the strawberry hennessy. My drink was large, but really just OK flavor wise. The best hurricanes don't taste as strong as they are, this one definitely tasted strong. Hubby liked his drink more than mine, and honestly if I didn't hate anything whisky based I probably would have agreed.
Even more fortunately, the food made up for the iffy management and just ok drinks. We started with the deviled eggs w/ crab and loved them. The deviled eggs had a slightly sweet filling, not super traditional but very tasty. Nice big chunks of lump crab meat on top. Pricy, but very good.
For entrees, my husband got the seafood po-boy (blackened) and I got the jambalaya over fettucine. Both were fabulous. The po-boy had giant shrimp, good sized chunks of catfish, some veggies on a large roll. The fries that came with it were perfect. My pasta was delicious, great robust flavor, lots of delicious seafood, chicken, and sausage. I wasn't able to finish mine so am looking forward to leftovers. We would order any of these again.
For dessert we split the vanilla bean bread pudding, which came with a vanilla ice cream. It was very good, of the dense variety vs. light and custardy, but very tasty. The portion size was definitely good for splitting.
The vibe inside is cute and modern, some of the tables have swings which is kind of cool. I think if they could iron out the management kinks they could bump up to five stars, but I will probably get my drinks upstairs at Masa and skip the cocktails here.
