The Best Restaurants in West Chester | Eater Philly

"Good Jamaican food can be difficult to find, and Miss Winnie’s on East Market Street in West Chester is worth exploring. Experience the complex depth of flavors of the Jerk pork or chicken platters made with a symphonic spice blend. If you’re still hungry after your entrees, dive into the sweet royal rum cake or freshly baked plantain tart." - Sam Herring

Yelp
*Takeout review* Restaurant: 5/5 Food: 4.5/5 Parking: Free limited parking We've been wanting to come here for awhile, but have not been able to due to the location and the hours. We were finally able to stop in after a movie and ordered few items for takeout. There's also indoor dining available, but the seats are limited. The restaurant itself feels very unique, comfortable and there's definitely a hint of history showing. What we ordered: -Beef Patty (Delicious, very fresh and flavorful) -Vegetable Patty (Delicious, very fresh and flavorful. The taste reminds me very much of a Grandma's home cooked Chicken potpie) -Jerk Chicken platter (Very good and delicious. With the exception of cabbage, it had no flavor, could use some salt and pepper at least) -Curry Chicken platter (Very good and delicious, same issue with the cabbage) Keep in mind the patty's can take up to 30 minutes to make and cook, I didn't mind it they are well worth the wait. a MUST HAVE. Both of the platters comes with Rice or Rice and beans. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Underwhelming (especially for west chester). Jerk chicken platter was good but nothing special. Frozen food aisle beef patty (poorly heated).

Yelp
Honestly really bad representation for jamaican cuisine, Highly over charged for the food given and small portions, In philly you twice as much food and great quality for much cheaper, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND manje Caribbean if you want that type of food in west chester

Yelp
During Covid I am going to restaurants not in my hometown or Philadelphia, my usual place to hang-out. Today I tried Miss Winnie's, about 35 minutes from my home. Darned, it was good. I had the chicken curry, red beans & rice, cabbage, plantains, and bread. These were the best red beans & rice I have had in the USA. The bread looks like it was from the grocery, but in tastes delicious. I took home about half of my rice and beans. When I go back here again, I will have the same thing. My husband went in for the food and said that the place was spotless. The owners were very careful about handing everything properly.

Yelp
The same excellence holds true years after I reviewed. Bert takes no shortcuts, everything is meticulously prepared. I live almost 20 minutes away so I come in whenever I can!

Yelp
Decided to eat in West Chester before heading back to Philly to avoid the traffic. As usual, I looked for a locally owned restaurant. Enjoying my meal of Jerk Chicken, steamed cabbage and rice and peas. The meal was served quickly and I ate in. The place is very clean - simple and casual decor. Of course, there was wonderful reggae music playing in the background. Father and son owned and operated, they have been open since October 2017, and are developing a catering menu. The chicken was tender and flavorful with jerk spices - spicy but not overly so. The cabbage and rice and peas were a perfect accompaniment. All the food is prepared fresh each day. The portions were generous and the prices low. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll definitely stop in. Please stop, if you're in the area. Give your tastebuds and your pocketbook a treat.

Yelp
Good spot for Jamaican food in West Chester. It was packaged well and the curry chicken was tender and delightfully spiced. I was a bit disappointed with the cabbage in terms of the conservative seasoning. Otherwise it was a nice spot and I will surely return to taste some of the other dishes.

Yelp
Today was only my second time visiting Ms. Winnie's since it's a little far from my Job, and I walked out of there thinking the same thing as last time. "Why don't I come here more often for lunch?" Once again, I left highly satisfied! As someone of Caribbean descent, and a South Florida native, the most difficult part about living in the Philly Burbs now is accessibility to Caribbean food and Culture. Now I know where to come when I'm feeling homesick! I ordered the Jerk Pork sandwich and a side of sweet plantains for lunch. The pork was well seasoned and cooked through. The slaw on top gave it a nice crunchy contrast and the Mango Chutney was as authentic as it gets. And of course, it was paired perfectly with the traditional Hard Dough bread. If anything cold have topped it off, it would have been an ice cold DG Kola Champagne or Cream Soda and a side of Festival. As with my first visit, I couldn't have left without 2 Chicken Patties to go. Mainly because my wife would kill me if I didn't bring her back a patty. As someone who doesn't eat beef, you don't understand how happy it makes us when Jamaican establishments carry Chicken patties. Too often do we run into that issue, so we highly appreciate it! What is uncommon is how fresh the patties are! It's always nice to receive patties that weren't sitting under a heat lamp for hours. Overall my experience was outstanding and I can't wait to go back! Big up to the Ms. Winnie's crew!

Yelp
Miss Winnie's is a must try! Chicken jerk with plantains, rice & beans or come through on a Friday & Saturday for the goat. Also, take home a Jamaican beef patty or 4. Great portions at a great price are just a bonus. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. Don't miss out especially if you are a local - you should be hitting this spot weekly!!

Yelp
Very good pulled jerk sandwich at an affordable price. Pork was overcooked. The flavors of the jerk pork were great. The meat was complex in seasoning. The bread was quite dense, moreso than I'd normally prefer. However, I think it makes sense for the strong jerk flavors. The sweet pepper jelly helped reduce the spiciness. The sandwich I found just spicy enough without being off-putting. The pork underperformed. The meat was cooked too far and was dry and chalky on the bite. The jus and fats of the pork were completely rendered out. The excellent flavor profile saved the sandwich.

Yelp
I love their Jerk chicken. Their food is amazing! I like the beef Pattie's as well. They never disappoint!

Yelp
Really yummy spot! Stopped in on a whim while in town. Super nice father and son team with dad cooking up some good food and son caringly serving it. Jerk pork was awesome. If anything could have maybe used a little more heat, but was juicy and tender. Rice and peas served with it was awesome...and the fried plantains...not what i expected...super sweet and ripe with a gooey caramelized exterior. Yum! The jerk wings were very moist and good... maybe a tiny bit too charred but otherwise delicious. It's impossible to get that outdoor pimento wood smoke on a small indoor grille so i can excuse that. Taste was on point and i could tell these were marinated for a good long time. Mango chutney was perfect on the side of all the dishes. Gotta find time to come back on a Friday or Saturday evening to get some oxtail and goat stew...i bet they're bangin! Food we tried was 4 + stars, but super nice team making and serving it made it 5. One suggestion, get some dg kola and some other Jamaican drinks to wash the food down. That would elevate you for sure.

Yelp
Hi, I'm Laron. Been using Miss Winnie's services for 7 months now. First off the most important thing. She's an honest and likable person. Secondly. She will drive to you. Thirdly...She will drive to you...Fourthly...she will drive.........You get the idea lol. Also of great importance...Her hair designs look great and you WILL get compliments. Also, they last....This is not a 2 weeks later your hair is falling apart operation. I have white guy hair. Which is not an easy task to keep looking good when it comes to braids. But Winnie makes it look easy and I typically get 4-6 weeks before I'm ready for a fresh braid. I'm currently at week 7 because money is a little tight, but it's still looking good. Speaking of money....Considering she drives to your location the price is unbeatable. Others wanted me to drive 10-15 miles to them and STILL charged more than miss Winnie. Oh Hell No!!!!!!! Don't get robbed by jerks charging Vegas prices when Winnie's Jamaican Jerk will treat you right.

Yelp
Pros: Delicious food, good prices, big portions, friendly owners, great customer service, convenient location Cons: I only wish they had roti on the menu! On February 1, 2018 me, my husband, and toddler unknowingly stopped in at closing time and were greeted with smiles. We were hoping to grab a late dinner to go and the father and son duo assured us it was no problem. I enjoyed a pleasant conversation with the son while we waited. Very welcoming and great customer service! I had the pulled pork and my husband had the jerk chicken, yum! I can't decide which I liked best, I recommend both! The sides of plantains, rice and peas, and cabbage were on point and plentiful. Oh, and I cannot rave enough on the hot sauces, both amazing and complimented the meal perfectly. I look forward to trying more of their menu. We will definitely be regulars here!

Yelp
This was my first time here, and I will definitely order again. The food was excellent. I picked up my meal, and they had all appropriate health measures in place. I highly recommend eating here.

Yelp
Never again!!! I really wanted to have a Jamaican place when i come in town. But this jerk chicken platter was bland. The rice had no flavor and the cabbage was bland ass well. The chicken was just ok. Sorry not sorry

Yelp
West Chester has become arguably the best foodie small town in the area. But since the loss of Mo's Rhythm Kitchen, we have not had a great choice of this kind of tale out. When I noticed Winnie's Jamaican Jerk shop I was cautiously delighted. Located slightly off the main drag, near the West Cheater train station. A tree obscures their sign so they use a large Open sign out front. We had the takeout- jerk wings and chicken platter. Both as good as you can get. Spiced properly, very slightly hot, and grilled well - the wings deliciously blackened. Served with a chutney that seemed to be mango, also good. The platter had delicious fried plantains- we will order more of them next time. Rice was brown and simple, waiting for my favorite hot sauce - why else would you order rice? They were out of their spicy beef turnovers - which is a good sign. I'll try again next order. You can eat inside at a high top table, and I saw people had brought their own beer. For us, take out is more comfortable.

Yelp
Excellent jerk pork, patties, wings...rice and beans, veggies. I'm a regular now for this authentic Jamaican place. Great staff too!
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
Muted Jamaican food is the best way to describe it. Wings (usually sold out right after opening) and patties are what I now know to stick to.
google avatar

Jonathan Z.

Yelp
Went there for the first time today with my son for lunch. Like I told the one owner, it's a father and son team, "if I had four thumbs I'd give you four thumbs up"! It literally took about 5 minutes from ordering to eating. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
The rice and peas alone are enough to keep me coming back . Jerk chicken is perfect , I can't wait to try everything on the menu.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
I work in a nearby restaurant. I stopped in to this fellow local business to support them and sample their wares. I grabbed an extremely affordable original jerk pork sandwich. Ingredients tasted fresh, presentation was on point, and the pork conveyed flavors that were both new to me, and demonstrated a mastery of a specific carnal cuisine. I will be back; I'm looking forward to sampling the other regional offerings.
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
Food is awesome. Delivery via Grubhub is difficult, to say the least. Guess I'll need to consider pickup from now on.
google avatar

Tom E.

Yelp
I don't know how this restaurant got 4 1/2 stars the Jamaican Jerk wings I ordered were burnt and the Curry Chicken was horrible. The beans and rice hardly had any beans and no flavor. I've been to a lot of different Jamaican spots and this by far was the worst. I threw away the punched card they gave me towards a discount because I don't tink I eva go bock here mon.

Madison G.

Yelp
I ordered Miss Winnie's to cater my sister's baby shower for around 25-30 people. I got the food fresh and hot! There was more than enough food and the price was unbeatable. I had friends and family coming up to me all through the party asking where the food was from. People were grabbing seconds and thirds! HUGE hit and now a must have at any party I have!!
google avatar

Yelp
Went to Miss Winnie's for lunch today with a co-worker. He went with the pork sandwich, I went with the hamburger and we split some wings. Super fresh ingredients and great flavor! And for the quality of ingredients, you can't beat the price. Will definitely be going back to try everything else on the menu!

Time O.

Yelp
Delicious! Gave a little presentation in West Chester, so we checked out the fare. (Came close to writing fair). Saw Miss Winnie's. Decided where we'd be going. Place was empty at around 2 pm. Usually, I refrain from dining when I essay an unknown place but stiffened my upper lip and proceeded. Food was good, I was happy. Wifey was pleased. And, they had Ting. Will be going back for the goat curry. Food reminded me of the Push Cart in Negril.

Yelp
This is a them unlime many others. Im not afan of carribian kitchen and was dragged here by a friend. It is definitely worth a visit and is reasonably priced.
google avatar

Yelp
I have never completed a review before but after visiting Ms. Winnie's for the second time I felt inspired to write this review. First visit I had the jerk chicken sandwich w/ side of onion rings. Second visit I had the jerk chicken wings - both were Amazing!... Great flavor, perfectly cooked, and had the spiciness that jerk flavor deserves. In addition, the staff was very polite and attentive which I really appreciate. I hope this place sticks around because I can't wait to try the jerk pork, oxtail n some other menu items.

Yelp
We came from California and ate at Miss Winnie's because we had heard SO many great things about this spot! If you're looking to grab a good sized portion of delicious food without breaking your bank - be sure to give Miss Winnie's a try! They take great classic dishes like chicken, pork, beans etc. and make them extra tasty with their Jamaican spices. 10 out of 10 would recommend!

Michael M.

Yelp
Great food and friendly service. Get food here once every 2 or 3 weeks for our office. Everything is always excellent. Favorite is the jerk chicken platter with rice and peas with fried plantains. The chicken has just enough spice with deep layers of flavor from the char-broil. When you add the chutney it is even better. Would highly recommend! Enjoy

Ed B.

Yelp
Ordered goat curry for my birthday dinner. 4/17, it was almost all bones, hardly any meat, flavor was ok, I'v had better. Not impressed. Wife got jerk chicken, was told it was not spicy she couldn't eat it. Don't think I'll go back
google avatar

Vickie M.

Yelp
Delicious jerk pork, excellent plantains! Great food, extremely clean! Wish it was closer to home - would go there often!

Red H.

Yelp
Give these folks a try! The friendly folks at Miss Winnie's produce a very tasty variety of typical Jamaican dishes......and a variety of riffs on burgers. I've eaten there twice and both visits were entirely happy affairs. Jerk chicken, jerk pork, and chicken curry meat pie were all well executed if a bit less spicy than their descriptions......let's face it, they have to cut back on the normal degree of heat or the denizens of Wimpchester couldn't handle it. If you want it hot; just ask!

Yelp
Stopped in after work for takeout and ordered three platters of jerk and rice.Everything was outstanding from the food to the service, nice people who deserve a larger following.

Yelp
We were in town visiting family and we love to try places we haven't been to before. What a great find! We stopped in for lunch and were greeted right away by Nick. After checking out the menu, I had the Chicken BBQ Sandwich and an order of Plantains. Our group also ordered the Jerk Chicken Platter and the Jerk Pork Platter. Everything was amazingly delicious! My sandwich had a lot of flavor and was just the right size. The plantains were hot and very flavorful. The platters, along with the meat, had big portions of rice and peas and plantains so I didn't have to share mine! Head Chef Bert came out to check on us mid meal which was great. West Chester, we will be back and Miss Winnie's, we will certainly be back for another delicious meal!
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
The most authentic Caribbean you'll get in west chested and the surrounding area! Lovely family owned joint that values independent and small business. Generous serving sizes and unquestionably made with love and pride. If you've never had this style of food, step out of your comfort zone and support Miss Winnie's
google avatar

Molly T.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place. The jerk chicken wings were made fresh and had the perfect char . The beef and chicken patties were perfectly flakey and flavorful.

Joann D.

Yelp
I was reluctant to order delivery as I've never eaten here before but I am so glad i did - everything was hot, delicious and on time. If you like a good southern jerk style bbq, this is a great spot - a little mild, but excellent taste
google avatar

Raj S.

Yelp
Lord have mercy (In a Jamaican accent!) This place is so good. I've tried both the sandwiches and platters. Everything is packed with flavor. Best plantains I've had!

Don G.

Yelp
Grabbed some quick takeout for dinner the other night. Food was extraordinary, service was fast and super friendly. Cant wait to go back for more! Easy to miss as you fly down Market, but definately worth a stop!
google avatar

Brian A.

Yelp
Simply amazing! Just took my first 2 bites of the pork platter and needed to stop to give it 5 stars! Feel like I am back in Jamaica.

Jarama L.

Yelp
Ordered the Jerk Chicken platter with plantains, rice & peas, a jerk pork sandwich, and a beef and chicken patties. Everything was delicious, very flavorful but not blow your top off hot. Definitely hit them up to experience some Jamaican cuisine...
google avatar

S. Gl. L.

Yelp
A wonderful authentic little gem in West Chester, on East Market (?). Father cooks, son serves and chats. Best jerk chicken, plantain, and sweet potato fries; spiced rice and beans and jerk pulled pork good. A simple store with not so simple cuisine.
google avatar

Ned C.

Yelp
Damn was this good. Clearly, the cooks know how to make a great meal. I will be back.

Kipp S.

Yelp
The BEST ribs in the county. Limited dining space, but you can view the menu and order online for pickup. It's a small store front and there's no dedicated parking. But it is worth the challenge for the best southern food I've ever had - including in the south.

Samuel M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious I got the big nick ( double jerk burger with slaw on it ) but it is a little pricey almost 10 dollars for just a slightly smaller than average burger no sides or anything especially because the burgers were a little overdone but the flavor is on point will be back to try out more from the menu

Nerine S.

Yelp
I love places like Miss Winnie's...absolutely amazing food with no frills. I think it's family run as well which makes me feel even better about supporting this business. I love that there's an option for Jamaican food around here...it's a great way to switch up the usual options in the area. Better yet, the food is incredible. I'm honestly wasn't a big fan of jerk chicken before, always liked it but never particularly craved it, but when I tried this one it absolutely blew me away. The goat curry was amazing and tender as well. The portions here are generous, the food is flavorful, and the service is friendly and helpful. The one thing that is a huge downside is the hours...the fact that it closes at 7 makes it hard to get dinner here for anyone who doesn't love close by. However, this will be a great weekend lunch or early dinner option for me when I'm near West Chester. The less than convenient hours weren't enough to remove a star :) Miss Winnie's is a MUST try!

Heather R.

Yelp
This was by far the worst food I have ever had . The rice and peas were not seasoned, neither was the cabbage, the chicken wasn't jerk chicken that I grew up on . Food was very flavorless, wasn't authentic Jamaican food.
