Pulling out the rare 5 star rating for this puppy! My husband and I stopped in today for lunch on MLK Day, and I am not exaggerating when I say it was the most impressive customer service experience I've ever had. Go on this journey of a tale with me, if it doesn't blow you away, I'll eat my hat.
We entered the building and approached the front to order, but before we could even size up the menu, Harry greeted us enthusiastically. He asked if we'd been there before (a question I usually approach skeptically and lie) but my husband said no, and boy am I glad he did. Harry proceeded to walk us through the entire menu, giving his personal favorites and notes about each thing he mentioned. It was quite the spiel, so when he was done and we began strategizing our order, he overheard us trying to decide between the cheesy potatoes and mac and cheese as a side, and he scuttled to the back to whip us up a sample of each! We ordered a three meat platter--moist brisket, turkey, and original sausage--and the potatoes and slaw on the side.
We settled into a booth and our name was called surprisingly fast. Once our food arrived (spoiler alert, literally every single thing was delicious) our friend Harry stopped by to ask what we thought. He left and returned with some fries and insisted that we try his special concoction--a mix of the Alabama white sauce and the Memphis BBQ sauce--and it has ruined me for all other sauces.
As we kept eating, my husband and I were chatting about all the things we ordered, and I said that I had ordered the moist brisket, where I usually order the lean, because of Harry's recommendation, but that I should have stuck with my gut because it was a little fatty (side note, most people would LOVE it, I just prefer a leaner meat) and darn it if Harry didn't overhear us and bring us some of the lean to try as well!
Seriously, this place is worth the trek even if you live in the District. The turkey was wildly moist, they smoke all their meats in house daily, the mac is cheesy as I'll get out, the fries are hella crispy, and we ate like kings for $20. They also give back in a big way to veterans and first responders. Go see our new friend Harry--he'll take great care of you.
