Since my visit to Knoxville, Tennessee, I've been on a MISSION to find the best southern BBQ in Virginia. So far, this place tops my list. You won't beat the quality for the price that you'll find here. It's just cheap enough to be in that fast casual range, but it's taste compares to most high end BBQ joints.
I'm on a specific low carb diet right now. No sugar with low carbs eating mostly vegetables and meat. This place is perfect for that kind of diet.
I went all in and ordered a half pound of each of their meats (some I had to take to go). That means pulled pork, pulled chicken, turkey breast, jalepeño sausage and beef brisket.
The pork was my favorite of all the meats. The ratio of fat to meat was perfect for me. The flavor was on point. It mixes really well with any of the sauces. I'm a low sugar guy so I used the NC Vinegar instead of BBQ sauce and it was amazing.
Chicken was really good when it was fresh, but as it sat on my plate it became a little bit dry, as you'd expect from white meat chicken. It has really good flavor by itself. I added the vinegar and it was awesome. Basically gave my chicken a bath in delicious spicy vinegar.
BEST TURKEY IVE HAD AT A RESTAURANT! I've had better turkey when my grandma used to make turkey in the deep frier, but this turkey was BOMB. It was so moist which is the big struggle for turkey.
The sausage was probably the most flavorful of them all. The flavor just explodes with every bite. It's kinda in that sausage link format, brats would probably be the best description. I'm not a huge fan of the texture of those, but if you're into that, get the sausage for sure. It's flavor exploded with every bite.
The brisket was probably the least flavorful option of them all, which is funny because it's the most expensive. It's hard to find really good quality beef brisket. This was good and definitely edible, I'll eat it all, but it wasn't something I'd come back for buy itself.
The cornbread was dynamic. Really good simple cornbread. A little on the sweet side, which I like and really well done. Nice accent piece and kind of a desert after stuffing your mouth with meat.
Collard greens are out of this world. They have so much flavor and they're so juicy. The serving size is a little small for the price, but it's flavor wise, you're not missing anything. They have little tomato chunks mixed in, which is fine for me, but it's not well advertised.
The cold slaw was good. I've certainly had better options for slaw. But their slaw was very juicy and had a peppery tinge. I'll order it again, but it doesn't stand out like the collards. They also had bacon green beans which I'm looking forward to eating on my next visit.
The seating is great inside. Nice big family sized booths and a couple of big tables. Has a minimalist feel to it. They're very big on they're support to the military and give away special cups to donate to veterans for an extra dollar.
This will likely become one of my top 5 eating destinations in Northern Virginia. I'm a cheap eats king, so this place is just barely inside my price range and never leaves you lacking on food taste.
