The food bank at the Welcome Hall Mission (aka Mission Bon Accueil) gives out too much rotten food. They should separate that stuff out and throw it away, but this place is not well run. I've had pastries that were expired by three weeks or more. When I complained they cleaned up their act, but only for a little while before regressing back to the same state of affairs. And every supermarket-packed meat I've gotten from this food bank has been highly rancid, inedible, and I told them so yet they continue to distribute food from that same bad donor.
A lot their stuff that IS edible shouldn't really be eaten by anyone - lots of sugar, fat and highly processed carbs. Examples: cookies, crackers, potato chips, pop, ice cream, pop tarts, and so on. This is only a good idea for people with no cooking facilities. Anyone else would be better off cooking oatmeal, which costs next to nothing. And the other food bank gives me all the pasta and rice I can eat, among other things, and they don't give out rotten food.
I'm not sure if even our poorest citizens benefit from this place, in terms of healthy eating. I also suspect they are using the money they save on food to buy more tobacco. In any event, Canadians should not have to eat rotten food to survive, just in my humble opinion. Too bad we can't have something like food stamps like they have in the U.S.
