I so wanted to like this place as I am a Mexican food fan. However, I should have known from the first misstep that just wasn't going to happen. But, alas, when you are with a bunch of colleagues from out of town, in town for a work function, you have to go with the flow and majority rules when it comes to a place to eat.
We showed up here after attending our event, it was a very busy weekend in DC overall so we knew that getting a table for our large group was going to be a difficult task no matter where we went. We showed up and there was a bit of a line to be seated. That didn't deter us as they have ample outdoor seating to supplement what they got going on inside. After waiting in the line and finally getting to the host station we were informed that it would be a long wait until they could get us seated. What was frustrating about this is that they had tables in the outdoor section, which we preferred. But we were told they could not seat us at the one as it was reserved. It really wasn't, it just wasn't cleaned off yet. But they stood by their claim that it was reserved. Not to jump ahead here, but by the time we left, which was a while, was when that reserved party showed up.
After some back and forth with the host station we were finally able to persuade them to move two tables together (which they have already done for other parties) to allow us to sit, order, eat and then be on our way. The whole seating debacle was the first misstep. Get ready for the next misstep.
Finally seated, we think we are on our way. We wait for our server to show up so that we can at least put in a drink order. We waited. We WAITED. After 20 minutes of no one showing up, and each time we attempted to get a staff member's attention (which they would rudely brush off by putting that "wait" finger up and sashaying away), we were finally able to tell them that no one was waiting on us. When they seated us, they never assigned a server, or if they did, they never told that server we were their table. I think we even got the excuse that the server they assigned us went on their lunch. The amazing server that was taking care of the table next to us (and he was doing it swiftly as they were seated after us and already near the end of their meal) took us on. Misstep two.
The third and final misstep for me is coming up now. When it came to ordering it was pretty simple for me. I knew I wanted a burrito and I knew I wanted it to have chicken in it. Simple. I also went with water to drink as I didn't want to be dehydrated my whole day. Well the water tasted as if it came out of a hose from the 1980s. Lukewarm and having that plastic taste to it.
The burrito sounded perfect to me. Along with the chicken it came with Mexican rice, beans, mixed cheeses, pico, lettuce, sour cream, queso, and jalapenos. Yes, just want I wanted to eat. When it arrives I start to dig into this bad boy. I mean, look at the picture, that's what you want a burrito to look like. Bite after bite I'm enjoying it, it is hitting my sweet spot. Then, phew lordt, then the final misstep appears. How does it appear, you ask? In the form of having a bone in my burrito. Not a tiny piece of bone either, but one that when I started chewing the bite I cut from the burrito with my teeth clamping down on the hardness, it turned my stomach. To the point where I had to push the plate away from me and try to discretely pull the bone from my mouth without gagging. It turned my stomach so bad that I felt like I got punched in the gut.
When the manager, I think that's who it was, came around to ask how we were all doing I let her know about this misstep. I will say this, she did try to make it right. At first she offered to have something else brought out. I declined because my stomach wouldn't be able to handle any food at that point. She then had it taken off my bill. There was no way I was going to finish it, as there was no way for me to make sure there were no other bones in the burrito.
If it wasn't for the kindness of this manager and the server that took us on, this would be a one star review. It will be a hot minute before I can give this place another chance. Like I said, I'm a fan of Mexican food, but when your stomach does a flip, you got to let it tell you when it is ready to give it another go.
