A Farewell to the Lower East Side’s Mission Chinese - Eater NY

"One year earlier, though, Bowien had opened Mission Cantina at the corner of Stanton and Orchard as a sort of bridge institution, although it quickly became much more. Increasingly during its three-year life span, as Angela Dimayuga took over many of the chef responsibilities at the new Mission Chinese, Bowien used Mission Cantina as a laboratory, going there early every morning to experiment, creating dishes that would sometimes end up at the larger restaurant, like the ma po burrito." - Robert Sietsema

Mission Chinese, Danny Bowien’s Genre-Bending LES Restaurant, Will Permanently Close - Eater NY

"The Lower East Side location of the restaurant formerly known as Mission Chinese, famous for its face numbing and tongue stinging fried chicken wings, will permanently shutter at the end of September. Owner Danny Bowien announced the closure of Mission in a post to Instagram on Thursday afternoon, citing the ongoing hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic on the city’s hospitality industry. “We have had to fight to save our businesses and jobs while making the case for our very existence,” Bowien wrote in the post. “We all desperately want restaurants to open — to really open — but we cannot insist on this out of obligation, without regard to the health of our customers and our employees.” The East Broadway restaurant’s last day of service on the Lower East Side is Wednesday, September 30. The Bushwick location of Mission, located at 599 Johnson Avenue, between Gardner and Scott Avenues, will remain open as it shifts its focus towards “take out, pre-packaged meals and new models of distribution,” according to Bowien. By some estimates, anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 restaurants may have already closed in New York City due to the pandemic, with many citing the fixed cost of rent and the uncertainty of a full return to indoor dining. Mission, for its part, has faced other obstacles, as well. Over the last three years, the restaurant helmed by Bowien has contended with allegations of racial discrimination against its managers. In February 2017, four former employees sued the restaurant, alleging that black staffers were treated badly and that management retaliated against employees who spoke up about discriminatory behavior and poor working conditions. The suit was ultimately settled, but its fallout could still be felt at the restaurant as recently as this summer. Bowien was born in Korea and raised in Oklahoma by adoptive parents. He opened Mission Chinese Food with restaurateurs Karen Leibowitz and Anthony Myint in San Francisco in 2010. Two years later, he brought the concept to New York, operating his East Coast outlet in a ramshackle space that drew two hour waits, a restaurant industry-heavy crowd, free beer from a self-serve keg (for a time), and the ire of health inspectors, who shut down the operation amid a rodent infestation. The larger, fancier East Broadway location opened in late 2014. Bowien’s bi-level restaurant felt like a simultaneous ode to posh Chinese banquet halls, nearby art galleries, and trendy brick oven pizzerias. As was always the case, Mission’s Asian-tinged global menu was loud, electric, and eclectic. There were rice cakes with thrice-cooked bacon and tofu skin, fresh-baked naan, verdant matcha noodles, tasting menus, mapo tofu laced with so many Sichuan peppercorns it could numb one’s throat for tonsil surgery, caviar, large format uni, smoked prime rib, Filipino-style stuffed chicken by then executive chef Angela Dimayuga, and pepperoni pizza made with Tartine sourdough starter. It was a kaleidoscopic vision of a restaurant. Mission Chinese might have been most famous for its signature dishes like the fried chicken wings, but its culinary significance derived from a constantly changing menu that showed that the traditional and the modern, the rustic and the refined, the global and the regional could all coexist in a single dining room. The Manhattan location, where the events of the lawsuit allegedly transpired, remains temporarily open for service. “Though social gatherings of this magnitude can’t happen in our dining room right now, we hope you join us for take out in the next couple of weeks as we celebrate the future evolution of Mission and the end of this physical location,” Bowien shared in the announcement." - Luke Fortney

"The $99-per-person feast is a worthwhile indulgence at Danny Bowien’s Chinatown restaurant. The family-style feast includes restaurant highlights like Chongqing chicken wings, Mapo tofu, salt cod fried rice, thrice cooked bacon, pea greens in pumpkin broth, and much more. Alternatively, groups can opt to choose their own adventure using the restaurant’s inventive a la carte menu." - Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner

Love this place, this Asian inspired restaurant have really good Chinese food. Some dishes are mouth watering. Usually it's not packed but on weekends you could wait for about 15 minutes to be seated. Staffs are nice and friendly. Atmosphere feels cozy and comfortable. Overall great restaurant will be coming back with co workers.

Great Schezuan food and super spicy! Gotta warn you if if you can’t handle the super spicy food. Most of the food here are spicy and have chili-based ingredients. I love spicy food so for me it’s best! We tried the spicy fried chicken (or chicken wings?), Chinese broccoli saute, fried rice, beef stroganoff, spring rolls, fried noodles and papaya salad! It has a lovely bar as well. Love them all! The service is nice and quite speedy, the waiters are helpful and always explain the food and warn about the spice. The price is not that cheap but not that crazy either. The ambience of the place is great. Chinese fushion with edgy interior. Happy to be back here.

Enjoyed my cocktail but the chefs tasting menu was pretty mediocre at best and way to much food for two people. Fried rice was cold, fried chicken was spicy but it had an overly sweet dry-rub on it that gave it a strange mouth feel. Chefs should go to Pok Pok if they want to taste a good chicken wing. The best thing were the cucumber pickles, which weren’t on the tasting menu. I don’t know what the hype is about this place. Wouldn’t go back.

My Boyfriend and our friend came up to NYC to visit my Sister while she was in town on business. She picked this restaurant because they have been here before and love it. We had two other friends of our group join us at the restaurant and we sat a large round table towards the rear of the restaurant. The drink selection also had great variety. Everything was amazing and we were able to curtail most of the dishes to be gluten free for my Boyfriend's food allergy. Everyone was highly satisfied with the dishes. I highly recommend ordering koji fried chicken If you come here for diner I would be shocked if you did not leave stuffed and happy.

OMG! This is probably one of the best restaurants I have ever been in NY! The ambiance was great! Out waiter was amazing! And the food was out of this world. We had the crab fragrant rice and was delicious!! The fried country lamb was amazing!! A must try! Even the greens were amazing the flavor of everything was perfection! Those 2 plates are def enough for 2 we didn’t finished them and also ordered an appetizer the wings... now let me tell you we eat spicy and we were warned that it was spicy but we didn’t think it was that spicy unless you enjoy your mouth on fire!! Then order them otherwise stick with the other items in the menu. We will def. be back to try everything else in the menu. Amazing chef! Keep it up!!

Creative spin on traditional Chinese food, worth trying!! I loved the Dan Dan Noodle (although it definitely needs to be renamed) and the Panna Cotta covered in pop rocks! It’s on the more expensive end and as far as I’m aware of, not a lot of chinese people come here, but a good choice nonetheless!

The service is really great!! But the food is just ok in my opinion.. I actually like the loud music.. some reviews don’t.. but it gives this place its own authentic vibe. Would come back to sit at the bar for drinks but I’ll pass on eating here again.

Delicious! Our server was a bit awkward and super rude but the food was delicious! Thrice cooked bacon is a MUST order. Salted cod rice is a near second. Lamb rice is good as well. 169 bar next door is amazing for a drink before or after!
