Celebrate International Chardonnay Day at These Boston-Area Spots | Eater

"From the same team behind Mission Boathouse, this outpost in Swampscott is so close to the ocean that it almost fell in when a sea wall supporting it collapsed in 2023. The good news is everyone’s fine, the building has been secured, and the chardonnay and seafood dishes are once again flowing. Not only will you find views of the ocean, but also the Boston skyline. And if the weather cooperates you can even catch the views from the roof deck." - Molly McDonough

The food was delicious! I got the baked haddock and it was so fresh it melted in my mouth! My husband had the seafood casserole and it was a huge portion and fantastic! Diana, our server was amazing! She surprised us with a decadent desert that was incredible! One of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time! Highly recommend this restaurant and if you are lucky, maybe you will get Diana to be your server!

Saturday brunch of 15. Lori was our server and she was world class. The brunch is all you can eat for $20.00. On the ocean. Almost as spectacular as Lori who added food to orders and served it family style (it was all family). She hustled over $5.00 mimosas and chatted with us. World class service. Good food…eggs Benedict was my favorite. Did not enjoy the meatballs but I’m picky with meatballs. We had a wonderful time and we were not on the roof.

Came here for a friend’s birthday, party of 12. Service was good. Reason for me saying that everyone got their meals and there was about a 10 mins wait until I got mine. No one touched their meals until I got mine, which I felt very bad for considering that their food was not going to be as hot, especially the birthday girl!! I did get a free drink, which was appreciated. I got the shrimp scampi for my dinner. I forgot to take a photo of it but it was so so. More soupy than saucy. Some appetizers did not come until dinner came. For apps I got the calamari and the crab cake which were delicious. But the vegetables underneath weren’t needed. For desert, there was a cake and some cupcakes but we were not offered a desert menu or any coffee/tea. So unfortunately, I guess I missed out on that. Drinks were great. Ordered a glass of the NZ Sauvignon Blanc, which had fantastic notes of lemon and grapefruit. I was given a free drink for the dinner mishap, watermelon martini. Now that was fabulous. The check took forever to get back to us when we were ready to go. Overall, I’m not in a rush to come back but when I do, I’ll come preferably early in the day vs a Friday night dinner.

Honestly, food was pretty good. Best clam chowder I've had in a long time. But waiting an hour for it in a fairly dead restaurant was not OK. Our waitress was great and kept apologizing, but it just put a damper on the whole affair. Don't show up hungry and you should be fine.

A group of us went to Mission on the Bay on a recent Sunday afternoon for their $20 all-you-can-eat lunch. The concept sounded great (90 minutes to eat as many brunch small plates as you’d like) but the experience didn’t quite live up to expectations. We were seated on the rooftop, which had a beautiful view overlooking the water. That part was definitely a highlight. However, it was very sunny and there were no umbrellas or shade coverage, which made it a bit uncomfortable in the 85 degree, unseasonably hot weather after a while. Service was pleasant, but the food came out VERY slowly and only in small batches. The long wait between dishes made it hard to enjoy the meal, especially with the time limit. It felt disjointed and a bit frustrating, especially when trying to make the most of the "all-you-can-eat" offer. The food itself was okay...nothing bad, but nothing standout either. If you're looking for a more traditional or hearty brunch, you might want to look at other restaurants in the area. My true rating is two stars, but I'll throw in an extra star for the location and our friendly (and apologetic) waitresss. Ultimately, the slow service, bland-ish food and lack of shade took away from our dining experience.

Google
Coconut + Ginger Beer Mocktail was AWESOME! My husband got the Clam Chowder and I got the Tuna Tartare. Clam Chowder was ok. But Tuna Tartare went above and beyond! We ended up sharing it. And we’ll definitely come back just for that! And the menu has plenty options… Highly recommend, especially in Summer time. They open deck is GREAT!

Google
The views are spectacular and the rooftop is fun. Food is hit or miss. Sushi and fish tacos are reliably good. We tried the bottomless brunch. The potatoes were ok and hummus with bread was delicious. Service was not good and slow despite it not being very busy. At times, we felt neglected. A waffle order was forgotten and we had to ask about it. They brought it but it was cool and no longer fresh because it had been sitting out for 20 minutes. If I were the server, I would not have served it that way. I would have apologized and requested a fresh waffle from the kitchen. , for

A nice surf and turf restaurant in Swampscott, Massachusetts. We came on our last night of our trip for a nice evening out and had a great time. The service was good. Both our server, the manager and our waitress were all awesome. The menu has a nice mix of seafood, chicken, steak, pastas, shareables and desserts. There was an extensive bar with a good wine list. Food came out faster than we expected which was nice and everything was pretty good. Nothing stood out as absolutely amazing but I wouldn't call anything even mediocre it was all good. We had a good time and I would recommend them.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere with ocean views, on street parking, upscale (but most outfits are fine), large bar, friendly waitstaff, patrons are pleasant. Food is good, but expensive. I usually go alone and sit at the bar, lots of couples and small groups, service is very good.

Yelp
I had high hopes for their bottomless brunch after visiting Mission Beach House a year and a half ago. I found Mission Boat House (their other place) to be excellent and chose it for my birthday brunch with friends last fall. Now Mission on the Bay has the potential to be excellent but failed in my book - it was like the little engine that could but didn't. First their huevos rancheros which have a fried egg at Boat House instead had a poached egg that was overcooked. Caprese Benedict also had a medium hard poached egg and the hollandaise sauce was broken. - Also needed salt and pepper which were not available on the table. In fact we could say that most items we tried were under seasoned. Waffles were really dry. Peri Peri wings tasted too much like vinegar. Jalapeño corn bread was overcooked. We both liked their meatball parm. My partner thought the fish taco was perfect. Bread pudding was not sweet enough and soggy. Our server informed us that heads up that we couldn't do any adjustments to our order and dishes came as prepared. I wish they allowed me to withhold sour cream from my order since they tend to use a lot and I'm not a fan of it. So just ended up scrapping it off my dishes. Great views of the ocean and a nice walk after since there's no parking available.

Yelp
I was excited to bring my boyfriend here after enjoying this restaurant years prior for my college graduation. Last time around, we say upstairs on the rooftop deck and I enjoyed my food and experience. This time around we sat downstairs and inside, as I believe there was a private event upstairs. No big deal. Unfortunately the food was a miss this time around. We started with a chowder that my boyfriend liked but I didn't care for. I ordered the Churrasco plate which the waitress informed me was new. I really didn't vibe with it. My boyfriend got the baked haddock which was okay. It was still a fun date night but I was sad because I was excited for him to come here after I hyped it up so much. I'd come back but order different things, and probs get the lobster roll like I did before...

Yelp
My husband and I took advantage of the beautiful late summer weather, got into the convertible and sped up to Swamscott for ocean views and seafood. We chose Mission on the Bay specifically for their roof deck and it didn't disappoint. The ocean views were spectacular while we soaked up some much needed vitamin D with a cocktail (or two). Our server Erica was welcoming and made sure to check in on us even though they were very busy with a bridal shower. We ordered Amalfi Sprtiz and Guava Margarita. I didn't think to ask for salt on the rim, so if you want salt on your margarita, you'll need to ask for it. The Amalfi spritz was perfect. Not too sweet and refreshing on a sunny day. For food we wanted seafood. We ordered half a dozen oysters (very briny), a clam cake and the fried fisherman's platter. The fisherman's platter can easily feed 4 people. It was delicious. I thought the fry on the scallops could be a bit crispier, but the fry on the other ingredients was perfect. Good seasoning in the batter. The fish was perfectly cooked. I didn't care for their tartar sauce. Way too full for dessert. We will definitely go back for the views and to try the Bottomless Brunch.

Morgan H.

Yelp
Our server was not kind to us, did not check when water was empty, waited so long between drinks and entree order that we thought it had already been placed. There was not enough chips to eat half of the ceviche so we had to ask for more which added to the long periods of time not being able to enjoy our meal. The fisherman's platter was a mountain of string onion rings and the clams were extremely chewy in a bad way. The mocktails (watermelon and berry) were almost entirely club soda and not drinkable. The mai tai ordered to replace the mocktail for flavor arrived when we were asking for the bill. For the price I hoped we would have been treated better and everything delicious but I will never return and I recommend others try somewhere else.

Yelp
We were waking the beach area at 2 pm and decided to try Mission. It was fantastic and Gill our server was perfect! We ordered 2 burgers and they were amazing. The service and the view were amazing. We will be back soon.

Yelp
I wish I had a better experience here because the views are amazing and the traffic to get there is always awful during the summer. Pros: - the view, it's amazing and you can't get better than right on the beach! - the food was good Cons: - service was just ok at the host stand. We were going to be sat right by the exit despite several tables next to windows with ocean views being open. We asked for one of the other tables and they were happy to switch us, but this seems like a no brainer? I would've brushed it off if the rest of the service had been better but... - Service was terribly slow! We were seated before the table next to us which seemed to know the waitress or be regulars here, and before we were even approached by anyone they already had ordered and had their appetizer at the table. Overall I might go back simply for the views, but the service will hopefully improve or maybe we were there on an off night.

Yelp
there was a beautiful view from the rooftop and the service was excellent. barter's were all super friendly and attentive. drinks were fine nothing special but not bad. the food was a let down though. oysters came on water almost fully melted ice and just did not seem that fresh. the blackened chicken sandwich was so dry, i even tried removing the dry (almost stale) bun but that didn't help. would go for a drink and the view but get dinner elsewhere.

Edith K.

Yelp
Roof top deck beautiful, service perfect, but don't get the fried calamari appetizer ....worst I've had is the only thing I can say, which is sad because it used to be really good a few years back

Yelp
I just wanted to come on yelp and expreess the amount of gratitude i have towards SOFIA the manager at this establishment. I wanted to let the review world know that as a manager Sofia is the one you want to meet. The one who takes care of the customers and the one who goes above and beyond. The one who takes care of any complication you have. Thank you Sofia. Also PATRICK. A was a wonderful addition and as a professional bartender, he is the one you want to have a conversation while you drink your perfect drinl

Yelp
The last two times I visited this restaurant for weekend brunch the service was atrocious. I always go on Sunday. The brunch options are awesome and tasty but because the wait service is so slow the food is delivered cold. The ocean view is not worth it. I f I need any additional items for the table like syrup, a knife, etc the wait is long! I saw some people leave from their table because their wait to have an order taken was long. I've asked the bus staff for things but they look at me like I'm crazy and I don't get what I request. An efficiency expert needs to observe and re-train the wait and kitchen staff to accommodate busy crowds. I will not be going back there anytime soon for brunch. If you go for brunch bring your patience!

Yelp
Good food. Good View. Bad service. Plates , napkins and silverware came well after the meal. Kids vanilla ice cream came and was yellow and melted. No spoon. We asked for a spoon. No spoon. Had to go to bar to get a spoon.

Heide S.

Yelp
Each summer we pick up lobster rolls 3-4 times a mo. It is the most decadent/delicious treat only ordered on perfect nights to eat on the deck. Today was our first lobster roll pick-up of the summer. The rolls are 2/3 the size of what they used to be. The butter was forgotten and we had to do it at home. (See photo for charcoal rolls.) Abso no taste to the lobster or yucca at all. So disappointed. This is usually one of the things I look forward to most each summer. Today I am left with a bad taste in my mouth and a $94 charge on my card, when I am usually carrying on for weeks about how good they are. Difficult to explain how disappointed I am. (didn't even finish our food)
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Food and service was great. Drinks were all really good. Say on the outside deck. Beautiful views
google avatar

Rohan D.

Yelp
Fantastic location by the sea (as the name suggests). We had three bowls (chicken and cauliflower) and hamburger. The hamburger was delicious. The chicken and cauliflower bowls were tasty - would have liked a little less carbs (bread, chips and rice) and some more veggies/salad. Good, friendly service

David C.

Yelp
Service was not good. Waitress disappeared for 20 minutes after taking our order, never asked us if we needed another drink, food took 1 hr to get to us after ordering. My son's meal came out right away so while waiting for our meal we asked for dessert menu and she brought us 3 menus, which to me was indicative that she thought we had our meals already. Table next to us were upset too, said it's been 2.5 hours for us...we've been here 4 times and they f* up every time. they ordered drinks that never came, and then showed up 15 minutes after they left. Never again !!

Yelp
Have been in this place several times for dinner and brunch always excellent. But on Father's Day I made a reservation for brunch believing was the same brunch. They always serve at the end of the bottomless brunch because their advertisement did not stayed any different when I arrived with my family, not only that we wait 20 minutes while we were sitting for somebody to come to us, but There was only two things on the brunch menu. It was a totally different branch not the one they always have. This is kind of disappointing because we do enjoy the bottomless brunch and seeing as Father's Day I expected more than two brunch items that Weider is very nice and apologetic, and was trying his best, but seemed that he was handling a big area by himself and the service is very slow. Food was good. Just disappointed in the way I was misled.

Nina L.

Yelp
Gave this place 2 tries. The service is so slow. Place not that busy. Not sure why the long wait for service / food and drinks. Food is fair at best both times and really expensive. It is on the ocean so nice ambiance. Maybe that's why. Not coming back

R D.

Yelp
Beautiful views were the best part of the meal. The service was friendly but slow and erratic. Our party of 6 ordered. It was a full 10 between when the first drink was delivered and the last drink arrived. The same thing happened with the food - only it took longer for everything to arrive. The food itself ranged from quite good to mediocre. The baked haddock was good. The seared scallops however appeared to have spent less 10 seconds in a skillet. They were barely seared and cold and still raw on the inside. Overall we will forego the view for better food and service in the future.

Joe T.

Yelp
If you wanna pay high prices in bad service for a nice view of the ocean-most definitely go to Mission by the bay. If you're just into the elegance in a place to go, you don't care about money and getting screwed. I would suggest that place strongly This staffs are very unprofessional and courteous.

Heidi O.

Yelp
Leondro. Thank you for offering to make things right after my review. Unfortunate that you never responded to the email you suggested I send. I'm bummed bc like I said until now mission has been our go-to for celebrations and take-out lobster rolls to enjoy on our porch each week.

Marissa K.

Yelp
Great view and the tuna lo mein was very good! Came for a few drinks and the bartender Michael was very attentive and friendly, also made great drinks! The best was the guava mojito. Will be back here!

Jk S.

Yelp
The view is 10 stars. Just beautiful on the roof deck. Shade and full sun both available. The food is not bad either. Whole fam enjoyed steak, Mac and cheese, and burrata beet salad. Skip the calamari app. It's old and rubbery. The problem is that the service is bleak. On a 90 degree day when you are out in the sun, you should refill water at least once. Especially children. We were empty from about the midpoint of the meal. Needed spoons for the kids and their Mac and cheese. Never got them. Needed a spoon for the ice cream (Fully melted. Half liquid). Never got it. Had to go to the bar and request one. If you matched your service with the view this place would be unstoppable. Prices are what you would expect for the view.
google avatar

RJ L.

Yelp
Came here for dinner with another couple hoping to sit outside but the weather worked against us. While the view held out the view was great. Parking can be a bit tricky so leave enough time if you have a reservation. We parked on the street. We started with a sushi role which was ok... if you are an experienced sushi lover I would say pass. Our friends had the Thai whips which they highly recommend. The salmon was grilled perfectly and had a nice flavor. The sauces on the side were a good addition. The new englad trio lacked flavor. The steak tips were enjoyed and cooked as ordered. Overall I would go back I would change up some fk the order and maybe stick mostly to apps. With that said in a nice day I would head here for the view as that is really what you are enjoying.
google avatar

Marni M.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for the past couple of years and have been happy with our visits here. The menu provides a variety of options including American, Asian, and some Spanish too! Some of my favorite dishes so far have been the sticky thai ribs, shrimp scampi, and lobster rangoon. Staff has always been nice and the view is phenomenal. We will certainly be coming back for their food and full bar access!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Still 5 star food. Great bar specials Mon-Thursday. No longer live close but made a special trip during off hours. Well worth it. Meatball Grinder at half price was excellent. On Garlic bread with plenty of tasty Marinara. I'm a meatball snob, and these taste great!

Sean O.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed during our dining experience At Mission on the bay. They promoted 1/2 off between the bun nights on Wednesdays. Only for the waiters to tell you when the bill comes out that it's only if you sit at the bar. I openly said to our waiter "I'll do a lobster roll as well, why not on half off night!" and was never informed that it was only if you sat at the bar. When the bill Came out, we asked why the lobster roll was full priced. The waiter finally told us it was "only if you sit at the bar" to which followed up with our waiter telling us "theres been a lot of confusion about that tonight" which confirms that the place clearly knows It's easily misunderstood. Feel like it should have been taken off the hill especially if our own waiter never informed us from the beginning and later confirming that it's been confusing for other patrons all night. Probably won't be dining back at this place.

Maureen S.

Yelp
Our server was lovely. The ambiance is waterfront, restaurant is clean, a bit pricey and food is salty. I give it a B.

Talen C.

Yelp
Sunday brunch with friends and it's the worst experience. Dishes didn't even come out together and one person didn't even get their all you can eat meal. Items come out staggering and the house home fries were cold and come after you finished the first course. The food is subpar at best. It's as if the front of the house doesn't even speak to the kitchen. Food runners brought out food but dishes were cold or not even brought out in any order. I don't recommend.

J. C.

Yelp
Wish I could say more...but when you're seated for 20 minutes and there's only two other tables seated...and no one even looks in your direction, it's pretty much time to go somewhere that actually wants your business.
google avatar

Ellie P.

Yelp
Went to brunch today. Service was fine. The food was awful. All you can eat brunch...not a buffet. Order from a very limited menu. The food came out lukewarm to cold. Don't recommend.

Yelp
Mission on the Bay is a beautiful venue overlooking the bay (surprise!) and fantastic service. They have a rooftop bar which we did not make it in time to enjoy. I was very pleased with our seating arrangement. I started out with a Spicy Margarita (naturally) and Duxbury East Coast Oysters*, while my friend started with the Thai Ribs. We both enjoyed our starters. For our meal, I had the Blackened Chicken Sandwich with Mango-Habanero Aioli and Pineapple Pico de Gallo which was delicious, however if they put the sauce on top of the chicken rather than the bottom, it may prevent the soggy bottom bun. I just ate it upside down; not as aesthetically pleasing but just as delicious. My friend ordered the Chicken Parmesan, with linguini which he was a fan of. Chelsea was our server, and she has to be the most excellent person in this establishment. She was great with recommendations, came around to check on everything but not too much, and a fantastic conversationalist. I was really impressed with her, and she made the experience 10x better than it already was. Ambience: 5/5 Food: 5/5 Drinks: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Mission on the Bay: 5/5

Yelp
My first time ordering Food was great my steak was exactly how I want it and also the service was amazing

Yelp
Amazing brunch as usual. Thank you!!! This was amazing. My parents came in from out of town. Service impeccable and the views are terrific.

Sean H.

Yelp
Terrible service at this place last night. Long wait to get in (and we had reservations), long wait to place our order, long time to get our order. Food came out haphazardly and in some instances not well prepared (sushi not well put together, risotto was undercooked) Waitress said it was because there was a rush on the kitchen but when I looked around there couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 tables. Endless steam of apologies and thank you for your patience.Took about 1 hour 40 min until we were eating our main courses. Ruined our celebratory graduation dinner. Overall extremely disappointing dining experience.

Yelp
We stopped by on Tuesday night for a bite; we were all in the mood for the ocean and seafood. Decor: Nautical, perfect for the location. Large windows, huge bar set up, upper deck available as well. Very clean and open Food: We got oysters; they were fresh and clean tasting. Hubby said the cocktail sauce was one of the best he had tasted. Lobster Rangoon is rather small but def had bits of lobster; I felt a lil too much wonton, but that is being nit-picky. The sauce on top was sweet and spicy, nicely balanced. We each chose the Simply Grilled option, where you could choose your protein and a sauce. It came with coconut jasmine rice and veg of the day. Salmon had the Shoyu sauce, which was good. Ahi tuna and scallops both opted for the basil pesto sauce. Pesto needed a lil something, so I squirted some lemon juice in, and bam, perfect! All the seafood was cooked to perfection. Need to mention that the veg was sauteed squashes and oh my my. Sometimes the veg has very little flavor or thought put into it. But mission did a fantastic job of seasoning and cooking them just right. Service: They were busy and getting busier, but our server Lorraine was the perfect balance of being there right when you needed but not overbearing. Sore spot: I know places are experiencing huge costs all over the board. However, almost every protein was marketplace value. And if you are trying to stick to a budget or this is a date or something where you might need/want to find out the price, it puts the customer in an awkward position to have to ask. I mean, even AVOCADO was MP! What? Overall, we will return.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Went here for the all you can eat brunch and it was a real let down. The food was bland and just about everything we ordered came out cold. Some of our drinks were undrinkable to the point that we just gave up on trying anything that new. Definitely wasn't worth the hype.

Yelp
They're all you can eat brunch on the weekends is so worth it!!! The bartender, older woman was so kind and so inviting. We had no reservation, forced to sit at the bar and I'm glad we did. The service was great and the food was top notch. Amazing views and great atmosphere, I will definitely be back. The meatball was my favorite

Yelp
This is my second review of this place. I come often I usually get the chowder & the best chopped Greek salad I've ever had. I will include 3 pics from 3 separate occasions. What inspired reviewing again tonight was the waitress Diane. She was friendly & professional. Great customer service. I also got my favorite seat in the house ! Andddd I would love a "Mission in the bay" t-shirt if you guys ever start selling them, pls let me know !

Debra O.

Yelp
This was my first stop after landing in Boston and I have no regrets. The view was pretty and plenty of parking was available. It's very classy and pretty inside. I ordered an aperol spritz which was amazing, the east coast oysters (a Florida native I'm picky about oysters and these were honestly amazing) and the lobster roll. The flavors of the lobster roll were top tier and it was juicy and savory but the price tag was a little high (38$) and there was a supply chain surcharge which was interesting of $3. There was also some shell in one bite and the bread was slightly burnt. Without those two flaws I'd absolutely pay $38. In total my bill was $108 which is pretty pricy. I'd still recommend stopping by for the oysters any day of the week.

Yelp
Great food and drinks on the waterfront in Beverly. I have eaten there several times and have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food as well as the refined yet comfortable atmosphere. Lovely new restaurant with sunset views.

Mike, the bartender makes awesome drinks. Mike's Brazilian Caipharina was as good as Brazil. I was very impressed. The food was awesome.

Yelp
The location of Mission on the Bay has beautiful views of the Lynn Shoreline. It's located right over the Swampscott line. We went in the early afternoon on a rainy, blustery day for a holiday meal. The waitress was excellent. Personable and efficient, she helped us with food choices and made us feel welcome and at home. There was no rushing and she checked in at perfect intervals. The food was excellent. We had the Sea Scallops, Filet Mignon and Spicy Vegetable Maki augmented by delicious cocktails and a Grey Lady beer. The rest room was clean and stocked and had the trash can near the exit door so you didn't have to wash and dry your hands and then grab a door handle, you could use a paper towel to grip the handle and drop it into the trash. The reason the review is 4 stars instead of 5 is because there is no parking. You have to find street parking which is tricky in that area.

Yelp
A restaurant that you wish would go under so that someone else could take over who cares because the location and view is incredible. There is no hospitality only attitude.

Yelp
view was great. food was ok but service could not be worse. we went last year and wrote it off after waiting 30 minutes for a drink at a table upstairs then when they finally came not even an apology for the late wait so we just left. too bad cause the place has a lot of potential.
