13 Hottest Restaurants in the Triangle, June 2024

"Downtown Durham music maven (and co-founder of the Art of Cool Festival) Cicely Mitchell opened Missy Lane’s Assembly Room, a jazz bar, in the former Old Havana space on East Main Street. Regular live performances offer jazz enthusiasts a chance to hear some of the region’s best talent, while longtime industry veteran Adrian Lindsay and his team mix up cocktails at the Front Room bar. If the packed opening night was any indication, Missy Lane’s will quickly become one of Durham’s premiere social spaces." - Matt Lardie

What an embarrassing disappointment! We read all of the negative reviews detailing how this place was a scam. Not holding reservations etc. But what we experienced was far worse…. We came across Missy Lanes’ Destinations: New Orleans event and thought it would be fun. We live approx 2 hours away from Raleigh and was making a special first time visit. We paid the $20 reservation fee which was supposed to reserve us a “table for 2 in the bar”. Concerned about all of the negative feedback- specifically for not holding reservations, I called the day before to confirm we indeed had a reservation. I asked about the live music which was advertised. The nice gentleman. Confirmed we would have a table for two and could see the musicians from our table. All was good. We drove 2 hours to attend the event. When I arrived, the place was completely empty. Please see pic. There was not a table in sight, so I was confused. We were seated at the bar- which is not what I expected, but was acceptable if that was the best that was available. The music was suposed to start at 7:00. See event advertisement. I sat down; ordered a drink and an appetizer. 7:15 came around, and there was no music. And no other guests. I could tell we had made a big mistake. I asked the bar tender what time the musicians would start- and she informed me there were no live music scheduled for that night. Even though they advertised there would be. There was no DJ. Not even music playing over speakers. We had no choice but to leave and go somewhere else after making a long drive. This place is a SCAM and will not be open in a year. Buyer Beware.

Went last week for Tito Puente Jr.'s show. Absolutely amazing venue! Truly an intimate experience with music! The staff is superb! The drink variety is fantastic! Great place to spend your night!

I went to Missy Lane's assembly room for the first time today and had brunch with my girlfriends. We enjoyed ourselves so much we were sitting there making plans to come back. The food and drinks were great. Al and the gang....icing on the already great cake. Such a pleasant friendly place with great vibes and energy I can't wait to come back! I told at least five people about it on my way home.

So disappointed because the concept is so good! Ugh I wanted to love this place so bad. Went for brunch this afternoon. Setting was small which was fine with me. The DJ was the highlight of the afternoon he played great music. The seating is very uncomfortable. The seats lean which is terrible when you're trying to sit at one of those low tables and eat. The food we ordered came out fast which kind of worried me because I knew there was no way my wings were fresh. I was right. Luke warm wings and rewarmed tots. My friend got French toast that were extra soggy. It says when you make a reservation that the $20 fee will go towards your meal (it didn't). I paid $100 for 2 drinks (bad drinks) 6 rewarmed wings and 6 tots, soggy french toast and bacon pieces. The math with the prices on the menu and what I paid doesn't math. I didn't complain even left the server a tip but will never go back.

This was my 1st time at Miss Lanes. I have a list of things I was not happy about not sure if it was that event or this is how this establishment operates. 1st we had black reject chair in the middle of the room(see photo), no tables where we were sitting, so I could not order food/drinks because I had nowhere to sit it, someone told me the drink were overpriced, 2nd I did not know what VIP or reserved seating was about, I would have preferred that seating, but most of the room was reserved. 3rd they had a screen where people could order food,(cool) but then the staff would sit the food on this table outside the kitchen, where people are talking, dancing, and walking back and forth (not cool). I gave it 3 stars because I heard good things about Miss Lanes events but not this Lovers and Friends event. Would I go back ? No, this left a bad taste, only way I go back is, if God bless me with a husband and that don’t look promising. I can say the DJ was good.

EAT BEFORE YOU GO. We tried to order multiple items last night and they were out. They didn’t even have fries. Come on owners…you know you’re having a day party from 5-10 on a Saturday night…Seriously, send someone to the grocery store. It’s difficult to have fun and drink when you’re hungry and a full menu is advertised, but not available. Also, please make sure devices work. Tried to place order with QR code…didn’t work. Tried to use kiosk on the wall…didn’t work. Tried to have bartender do it and he had trouble too. (Not his fault and he was very nice.) Management: Please do better. This poor experience couldn’t been avoided with a little PROACTIVE care.

We stopped by this venue tonight ( our first time here), and we were told by the hostess that the bar was available. We headed to the bar and found that two bar seats ( at the end of bar) was reserved. We asked about that issue, and the staff( four of them) was confused about that issue . Two customers at the bar gave up their seats for us( while the seat issue was still discussed) My husband and I found that annoying..how come the available staff couldn't figure out the seat issue? Then,we ordered drinks and beignets( waited on the beignets for 40 minutes because the computer was malfunctioning),they were good ( not hot like promised). The music was good though. I don't know if this was an " off" night, but we did expect better.

Google
Unsure if we did something incorrectly, but we paid to reserve a front row table for their Sunday jazz brunch. We arrived at noon and were seated right away with a couple glasses of water, no menu. After half an hour and watching others be seated with menus, I walked up to the host stand to request a menu. 1pm rolled around and still nobody had been to our table. 3 other tables were sat and served with food & drinks by the time we walked out. I was really excited to experience the jazz scene in Durham, but left hungry and disappointed. At least the music was good.

Yelp
From the seamless entry, to getting served promptly, the lovely sounds of Luther Vandros playing in the background, to the intermittent conversations that took place throuthe evening, this place was worth my visit! I look forward to returning when in Durham again. Come early unless you reserve seats in advance.

Yelp
Disappointing Experience at Missy Lane in Durham I attended Missy Lane's event last night, Groove Me, and I left extremely disappointed. Honestly, I'm not even sure what I experienced, but let me break it down. My wife and I purchased preferred seating tickets for $55 each. Since seating was first-come, first-served, we made sure to arrive early. Before the event, I reached out via the number on the website to clarify the dress code, as it stated all-black attire was required. Given that my wife and I were flying in from different cities to meet in North Carolina for date night, this was a bit of a challenge. The person I texted assured me that we didn't have to wear black, which we appreciated. However, my wife was able to stop by our house beforehand and grab something black so we could match the theme. Upon arrival, the venue's ambiance was promising. The brick walls gave off a jazz club vibe, which is what we expected based on their TikTok videos and reviews. LeToya Luckett was advertised as the host, but to my surprise, she didn't actually host anything. There was no structure to the event--just a DJ playing old-school music. Seating was a major issue. There weren't enough chairs, and at one point, staff started pulling out folding chairs from a closet. Then, around 10 PM, the owner announced that Groove Me was meant to be a dance event, so they started collecting the chairs. People were actually hiding chairs to avoid giving them up, and I even witnessed a woman and a security guard tugging a chair back and forth. The food situation was another letdown. I had asked in advance if dinner would be available, as we wanted to have a full meal. Instead, the menu consisted of overpriced finger foods--$15 for five flavorless air-fried wings, and while the egg roll was decent, it was nothing special. All in all, we spent $250 for a night that fell completely flat. LeToya Luckett didn't host (because there was nothing to host), the seating situation was chaotic, and the food was disappointing. We left before the event was over, and we weren't the only ones. If this is what Missy Lane was going for, I won't be returning.

Yelp
I have been to this place twice and can say I will not return. The customer service is a huge miss. The folks behind the bar seemed bothered to take your order. I even witnessed another customer, rolled their eyes at the service and leave without receiving their drink. I suggest whoever is running the day-to-day operations reevaluate what type of customers they're aiming to get.

Yelp
I heard an interview on the radio with the owner and knew I wanted to go to a show here. Tonight, I went for the 1st time. I have an 18-year-old who loves music; being able to take him to a venue like Missy Lanes is a wonderful experience. We arrived early and sat in the bar, which is beautiful and intimate, and I listened to him talk about the architecture. Then we attended the show. I won't talk about the show itself, but the sound was not too loud, the drinks were well-poured, the staff polite. Is it a tight venue - yes! However, if you love live music and want to experience hearing the music and the intimacy of exchanging eye contact with the performers, this is where you want to be. I was able to experience music like you can't in a giant concert hall or via pre-recording, where the perfection of it touches you deep inside. Support the arts and enjoy a genuine musical experience venue. There is only one pet peeve. The $7.50 per ticket processing fee. To take my son to a show is $15 bucks on top of the ticket price. I was just very disappointed how expensive that makes it.

Yelp
Chilling here at Missy Lane's on a Thursday night during their jazz jam. I see why this spot is so popular as it is super chill, welcoming, and relaxing. I've wanted to come here since they've opened and it will not be my last! The staff are kind and allowed me to chill for a while. There was no pressure to order anything while I read my book and decided what to sip on. I chose their French 75 as I hadn't had one in a while, and the waitress said it was one of their most popular drinks. This was one if their lower cost drinks, too, with the exception of their mocktails (I love that they have these as an option, by the way!). Most of their drinks go on average for $15 or more. They have a mix of so many opportunities to enjoy live music and performances without all of the pretenses. I hope that I am able to come back for another event soon as I enjoyed every moment here! Thank you for this space, Missy Lane!!

Yelp
A new performance venue and community gathering spot in Durham, Missy Lane's is off to a great start! I dropped in on Week 1 for their Elegant Soul open mic night. A mix of music, poetry and performance for the community. Missy Lane's also has a deep schedule of live jazz and world music on the calendar so check it out for an upcoming show. The space is pretty basic, front cocktail bar with lounge seating overlooking Durham's Main Street. A curtain separates the bar from the live events area and you enter for events on the hallway to the right. The main events area is primarily 2-tops with a small stage to the front. Overall a good scene for some live music and black-owned. Would love to get back for a jazz show!

Yelp
The Missy Lanes space is a great concept. I enjoyed the performance I saw here. I attended the Tamisha Waden show at Missy Lanes. Waden's performance was nothing short of phenomenal. She has a great singing voice. She and her band presented very well. The overall space is tight and the seating is side by side without any spacing between each seat. My initial thought was that it was extremely tight but once the performance started I forgot all about this. This space 1000% lives up to the description on their website "providing a safe space for people to assemble, socialize and build community through music." The drinks were okay. The staff at the door and inside the assembly room were pleasant and professional. I would go again but I hope to have end seating. I don't like the up close and personal setting next to people I'm not directly with, that's my only complaint.

Yelp
In full disclosure, we only came here for coffee on a Saturday morning and have not been to a jazz performance yet. This is located in the space of the old Havana Sandwich Shop on Main Street. They serve coffee and a few light bites during the day and are a jazz club at night. The front area by the bar is spacious and inviting. We enjoyed our coffee drinks even though they took a while. Might have been new staff or staff learning new coffee drinks. Another party by us took even longer to get their drinks. We are interested in coming back some night to see a concert.

Yelp
Looking for a NIGHT OUT spot in Durham featuring live performances, cocktails and a cool vibe ....then head to Missy Lane's Assembly Room in Downtown Durham . Being that it is on Main Street, finding parking was not the easiest task but since I was on a date, I got door to door service. I got to experience this minority-owned live jazz club during their grand opening week and enjoyed the intimate lounge area, cocktail bar plus an outstanding performance by Althea Renee --- who has two shows tonight Saturday April 6th! This is a place to come lounge "indulge, unwind, and experience the extraordinary" . Whether it's to meet friends in the The Front Room Cocktail Bar or check out a live performance , Missy Lane's Assembly Room is a great edition to Durham,NC!

Yelp
Came here for the BPN March Networking Mixer and stayed for the Open Mic Night. The drinks were good and so was the vibe and entertainment. I would definitely return. It's super cute for a date night activity after dinner.

Charles H.

Yelp
Made VIP reservations for Valentine's Day, which should have included Champaign and food. I would have expected to be accommodated as VIP or at least provided a method to order. The entertainment was great; however the service was extremely poor and unacceptable for the $219 that I paid. If you advertise VIP ensure you have the staff and policy to support it!

Yaveshia B.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars, I would. My husband and I purchased a VIP booth for over $200 to celebrate his birthday weekend, expecting a enjoyable experience. Instead, it was a horrible experience nothing about it said VIP. We were told a booth would accommodate 4 people but other VIP booths had way over the limit, and left us with no room to seat our 2 guest and nothing was done to accommodate us. The venue was over capacity, yet they kept letting people in at the door making the experience even more chaotic. We spoke with Dameon, who assured us we would receive a refund, but that never happened. This was supposed to be a memorable celebration, but instead, it was a huge disappointment. Beware of buying VIP tickets--you may not get what they you paid for. We will never return and do not recommend this place to anyone looking for a well-managed event.

Yelp
Unique, inviting and comfortable atmosphere! You will experience the best of all senses!! The coffee is the best I've ever had in my life, soothing captivating aromas and taste The comfort of seating and the sounds of music on the piano takes your experience to another level of enjoyment! Yelp
Update: My husband and I are so loving being Club Deluxe members at Missy Lane's! We attended the 2nd members only event last night. The first event was a swanky Prohibition era themed party where everyone showed up in sparkling flapper dresses and dashing suits with retro flair, and outstanding trumpeter Al Strong assembled a top notch band playing hits from the era, including Cab Calloway. The 2nd event had a rosé theme, with attendees dressed to the nines in shades of pink and a rosé wine tasting. The highlight of the rosé event was the fantastic band, Mix Tape Grab Bag, playing a scorching set that included Stevie Wonder and Prince classic hits. Both bands had the crowd jumping and it was such an amazing vibe, at each event. Club Deluxe members get to enjoy these members only events every season, and we're already looking forward to the summer event, having no idea what the theme or band will be, as it's sure to be another wonderful excuse to get dressed up and bask in some great music, in a gorgeous atmosphere.

Yelp
I've been to Missy Lanes many times since they opened. I've always enjoyed the shows and haven't had any issues. Tonight was a different story. It is the last time I'll be giving them any business. We purchased reserved general admission tickets. These tickets guarantee a seat. When you purchase the tickets the information given is clear that the seating is first come first served. We got there an hour ahead of the show to make sure we got in line in time and got seats we wanted. What they failed to mention when we purchased the tickets is that they had sold out the show to a group of 60 who they gave priority seating to. We, along with a decent amount of others were left waiting in line wondering why doors weren't opening at showtime. The staff all acted clueless until they finally opened the doors to allow us in. At which point they informed us that they had given all seats at tables and in the front 80% of the room to the group. Their solution had been to pull some extra chairs and cram them in the standing room space at the back for everyone else in general admission. I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the management of this place to condone such a huge misrepresentation of ticket sales and to take money from customers at full price just for them to show up and find out the terms they agreed to when they bought their tickets were not going to be upheld. When we talked to the manager/part owner about it he tried to spin a story saying the show was sold out before general admission tickets went on sale. So again selling tickets at full price to a sold out show and cramming spare chairs at the back of the room? I'm not sure why he thought this was a better explanation. Buyer beware; they don't care about their regular customers and given the chance, they will take your money and leave you wishing you hadn't bought tickets in the first place.

Yelp
Spent my birthday there in January and the live jazz band was amazing. Waiting to get tickets to Sy Smith, she's awesome , July 1024.

Yelp
Drinks at the bar were excellent. Wonderful, laid back vibe. It no longer felt like I was in Durham. I was transported to a big city speakeasy. Can't wait to go back.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Let me just start by saying the performer, Kim Scott was absolutely wonderful. I also got to talk to Marcus Anderson briefly, which is always a plus. Upon entering, the bar area, leaves something to be desired. If there was a huge crowd, there would not be enough seating. Menus at bar were dirty and worn. The bartender was OK, not much personality but that's fine. There was a gentleman named Adrian who spoke very rudely to my friend about her purse being on the bar close to some glasses. I was shocked that he was so rude so apparently it showed on my face. He then asked me, "was there a problem"? The bar is really cramped. Once inside the actual venue, seating is OK. I had an absolute wonderful view of Kim Scott, sound was awesome and we had an overall great time, but my friends and I will make any place fun. I think with a few upscale tweaks, and a more welcoming environment when you first walk in, it would make a huge difference.
