Why Japanese Mentaiko Is Getting Popular in America | Eater

"A long-standing Asian supermarket chain that has stocked mentaiko and its unspiced counterpart tarako since the mid-1990s, serving mainly Japanese and Korean home cooks and providing early U.S. access to the ingredient before its broader restaurant and retail adoption." - Mehr Singh

It's a good Japanese food court with lots of food choices and yummy as well, all are made fresh, there's a tempura place that seriously it's so tempting! The place tend to be packed, so come early and use your good eyes to look for vacant table! Tips would be, eat comfortably so you would be happy to give your table to others when you're comfort! They need bigger space for the tables since the hype is real, the yummy food is a fact!

its a beer life

First off prices here are on average 20% to 30% more than Tokyo central. I had visited Tokyo central just an hour before here and was glad I grabbed all my fish and meats there. The fish market portion was disappointing and over priced. The food court seemed to be the biggest draw and looked awesome. I won’t be back and the parking was so bad people were getting into verbal confrontations in the parking lot. There were so many rude drivers stealing parking spots from others who were waiting longer. A true glimpse into the life of the rich and greedy. Come on Cali…you can do better

Google
Clean, Spacious, and Consistently Good Food ⭐️ Love that this place has updated its floor plan — there's now more space, more seating, and an overall better flow. What really stands out is how clean the restrooms are, which is rare for a food court setting. Most mall food courts are the opposite, so this was a pleasant surprise. The food here is always consistently good and reasonably priced, except for the beef tongue restaurant — which is delicious but on the pricier side. Overall, I love the new look and layout. I’ll definitely keep coming back. The Japanese vendors really know how to maintain cleanliness and quality, and it shows.

The prices here are very reasonable. perfect for lunch time, big seating area, a lot of food options. You need to visit this place more than one time!

Google
Great Japanese market. However, I come here mostly for the food court. They have a good variety of Japanese restaurants to choose from. Sometimes, I also get the sushi from the market. Place is clean and you don't have to clean the tables after you are done. There is a person in charge of cleaning the tables. Parking is free but sometimes it can be a challenge.

Google
This review is specifically about the food court at Mitsuwa Marketplace. After our one-day trip to Newport Beach, my wife suggested dining at the food court in Mitsuwa Marketplace in Costa Mesa because the food court offers tasty Japanese dishes at good prices. It’s one of our favorite dining locations because the staff keeps the area clean, making it a pleasant place to eat. The menu costs at Hmart are higher, and customers have to clean up after themselves. Tables at Hmart are often left dirty by other customers, making eating there less enjoyable. Mitsuwa's approach is the best. I highly recommend visiting Mitsuwa Marketplace food court for a great dining experience!

Google
4/8/2025. Renovations indoors and parking lot done. Prices up a lot. Eg $5-7 for 2L bottles of tea, and even Cup o Noodles $3.69. So other local Japanese supermarkets can be cheaper to shop at. Indoor restaurant prices up, too. Eg Gyutan meal is $30~. Absurd policies. Eg. We can't open the SELF CHECKOUTS because we don't have enough STAFF to stand by DOING NOTHING but watch you and help when the machines don't work right. 1. Get the lazy security staff chatting away at the entrance to watch over the stations.... Or 2. Get more reliable machines installed. Instead, customers forced in long lines at times waiting for one open check out.

Google
What a find! Great food court with udon, ramen, lots of other Japanese goodies !

Yelp
I went in for the marketplace and stayed for the grocery store . I noticed it was very busy during lunch hour. My FAVORITE items were the shrimp and TEMPURA battered items from the shop that allows you to grab your own tempura sticks. But I also bought the curry/chicken katsu from another shop (it was ok) and the spicy mayo seaweed rice wrap from a third place and that one I really enjoyed ass well. If I would go back, I would only buy the tempura items.
google avatar

Yelp
Parking can be troublesome when it's busy. It's nice there's a food court with seating and additional stores attached like Maido and Daiso and royce Chocolate. The market itself is small but a decent selection still of things you can only find at a Japanese market. The hot and cold ready to eat foods are on the right side of the market, along with a small bakery. The sushi in my opinion is better at TC. Rice is harder in the refrigerated section than what I've had at TC. Regardless still convenient to grab.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
I was looking for a spot where I could get quick premade sushi for a reasonable price. I found this market online so I thought I would give it a try. The price was reasonable for premade sushi but the sushi was not good. It smelled very strongly of fish and the rice felt like it was a few days old. That being said... there is so much more available there than just the sushi. There are small restaurants in the market where you can eat and full a Japanese grocery store.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Asian grocery store where many Japanese restaurants in the building! When the meal time comes, this place is fully packed at the food corner! :) Good market to come visit! :)

Yelp
Okay, it is sooo hard to find parking here on the weekend. There's no parking out front and underground yet you could circle forever and still have a difficult time finding parking. So I went during the week and there was parking and now I know why people like this location. They have all your necessities in the store-food, beauty products, kitchenware and a great hot food/pick up section. They had very wide range of ready made sushi, cold sides and fried delicacies. A great spot to pick up a quick and affordable lunch or mid day snack. Think I'll have to brave the weekend lines or get their super early next time!

Yelp
"Feel the vibe from here to Asia" (The Manhattan Transfer) Mitsuwa Marketplace opened its first amazing Asian market in Fresno in 1979. Today, the brand has grown to twelve locations stretching from California to Texas to Illinois to New Jersey to Hawaii. The store was an absolute blast to wander around in and gawk at so many wonders everywhere we looked. Gorgeous fruits and vegetables, mountains of rice, more sauces and spices than I ever dreamed existed, They sell a mind-numbing amount of Asian foods, drinks, snacks, prepared foods, produce, baked goods, meat and seafood counters, and more. The marketplace has some self-contained businesses (like Daiso), and a big food court with sushi, sashimi, bento, noodles, soups, and pretty much whatever you'll find in a Japanese restaurant. Want to wash all that goodness down with an adult beverage? Well, Mitsuwa has Japanese beer, sake, Japanese whiskey, and Japanese wine. We were flying home soon after our visit, so I was reluctant to buy anything in a glass jar or bottle. But we did pick up some boxed soups and sauces and a huge Korean pear to enjoy in our hotel room. If I lived locally, I'd be here a few times a week and most definitely would hit that food court for dinners.

Yelp
I love coming here for the food court. It is absolutely affordable and they have so many different options to choose from that it's like Japanese food heaven. Service is very fast and you'll never wait more than 10 minutes.

Yelp
Mitsuwa Marketplace is a perfect spot for Japanese food items, cookery, snacks and food. It has that Japanese feel away from Japan. My family would come here when we happen to be nearby for its Japanese crackers which reminds us of snacks from Kyoto. The food hall is a nice spot as well for some casual Japanese food and snacks. Since we were there close to lunchtime, we decided to stay. We had the Tempura Zaru Soba and Tempura & Sashimi Box from Misasa stall and Ramen from Santouka. They were generally satisfying. The downside was the vegetable tempura was not as crispy and warm. The Zaru Soba (cold noodles) was just okay. Customers would still flock here during lunch. If we happen to be nearby Mitsuwa Marketplace we would come back for the Japanese crackers and drop by the food hall.

Yelp
This place is very convenience, a great food court which you can find verity of foods/drinks to enjoy. Since the past 8 years gyūtan (牛タン) is always my favorite dish. It's phenomenal delicious. Little disappointed when they raised up the price and cut down the size of beef tongue. This establishment got new renovations not long ago after Covid. It looks more beautiful, more seats available and clean. There are 3 locations included Irvine, Torrance and here at Costa Mesa. I mostly come here a lot. If you are a Mochi's fan, it's a place. There are Ramen, Udon, salmon dishes, Chinese dishes, tempura stuffs, Beer stand. Omg.. everything is just very delicious. The service is great, you got your order in minutes. I like to shop at Mitsuwa supermarket, you can find lot of authentic stuffs such as skincare products which are imported from JP. There is a bakery inside the market, they bake everything freshly. Also, fresh cut quality sushi on the shelf. Love sushi there just grab and go.
google avatar

Yelp
I live in Long Beach and I literally drive all the way down to this location because of how much I love the restaurant selection and the sushi. They have awesome cream mochis as well, and the writing store is so cool!! I got a fountain pen from here once and it writes beautifully

Yelp
This Mitsuwa is clean and well stocked. There's so many interesting things to look at and buy. There's also a food court which makes this mitsuwa even better. Really appreciate how much parking spots available here. There's an elevator that goes directly to the marketplace from the lower garage parking lot.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place! When I am missing Japan I go here to get a taste of it. The udon restaurant is my favorite and the prices are great. It's a fun marketplace that also has cute shops, food and drink spots plus the grocery store. Just have to try to get there early as the parking lot fills up quick....
google avatar

Yelp
If you are going to see a show or concert at the Segerstrom and craving Japanese comfort food, come to Mitsuwa food court, only 5 minutes from South Coast Plaza but unknown to most out-of-town visitors. You can get creative and mix it up to your heart's content -- pick up a bento box or appetizer at the market, then walk over to the food court, order some tempura, udon, ramen and desserts. It's also a fun place just to look and mosey around.

Yelp
Mitsuwa Marketplace is another well-known Japanese general store in SoCal, especially the Torrance location. The Mitsuwa @ Costa Mesa location, likely due to its smaller size and how tightly packed everything is, could cause some sensory overload. The location is shared with a few other businesses, so the parking can get hectic, and to me I get anxiety knowing doors being dinged is inevitable due to the cramped, marked spaces. I don't believe there is any "optimal" time to come but certainly avoid the lunch hours. As there are customers that work nearby swing over to buy prepacked lunch boxes, so the food court is congested. There are a few independent stores - a noodle bar and mochi dessert, setting up counter along the outskirt of the perimeter just makes the market very noisy. The service and prices are okay, but the uniqueness of the inventory does draw me back.
google avatar

Natasha C.

Yelp
This place seems larger than the Bay Area's Saratoga location. I heard the Torrance location is bigger, but I've never been. Love coming here for Japanese beauty products (face sheet masks, my fav make-up wipe remover, eyelash glue, etc). They also carry a small amount of Korean beauty products. There's a Shiseido store near the food court. The food court has different budget price points and a good variety. There's a bakery, a stationery store, and a Daiso store. I would go here more often if I were closer! There are no loyalty points like H-mart or Shibuya-LA. (48/100)

Yelp
Review 7/365 My 1st time coming to this Marketplace along w Food Court 9.24.24 Idk how i never knew this place existed! I've been living under a rock! My gosh. Really awesome place w a food court w a diverse option of eateries for almost anyone. ~ Hokkaido Ramen Santouka place i definitely would recommend. Their broth is delicious and noodles are chewy yummy. ~ Dessert place such as the known Matcha REN. Known for their Mont Blanc dessert. So yum!!' Boba shop called UMacha. Sells delicious matcha drinks and Boba. The market isn't itself has some pretty cool items especially items you'd find in Japan. Imported Japanese products along w good quality meats, food etc for your needs. There's a Diaso shop too inside. I can't wait to return to eat more yumminess here. Lots of parking available in the underground parking.

Yelp
This Japanese marketplace includes a food court with many offerings including a large market, a bakery and a mochi stand. I find it fascinating just to walk around, but the aromas and sights have always resulted in me ordering hot food and leaving the store with a bag or two of groceries. Seating in the food court can be challenging at times as can be finding a parking place. But going inside is worth the effort. The food is fresh and the variety (e.g. vegetables, sushi...) is substantial. I recently learned that prepared foods go on sale late in the day and I'm going to take advantage of that on my next visit. All of the staff I have encountered have been friendly and helpful in answering my questions.
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
I love Mitsuwa as a whole. All of the food court looks amazing now with the beer open and to enjoy a home run udon with all the fixins. I just hate how the parking is so chaotic here. Everyone is always very kind and friendly though. It makes me feel like I'm really in Japan, even though I haven't been there yet. I can feel the vibes. Ingredients though seem a bit pricier but great quality

Yelp
Omg this is for omusubi gonbei pop up at the front. Think it's gone for now though, but for the price of the onigiris it was surprisingly soo delicious. Like the rice was seasoned perfectly. I got the bomb and it had some seaweed bits, cooked tuna, and cooked salmon with mayo and some special sauce ($5) . I expected raw spicy tuna because of the description, but it ended up being my favorite. The ikura is a nice basic flavor and kind of mild. The shiso leaf has a nice flavor from the shiso leaf itself but overall is a plain rice ball- their rice is just really nice texture and yummy. 2 rice balls were able to fill me The other time I tried the mentaiko and that was the only one I didn't like as I found the mentaiko quite fishy/bitter. I think their brown rice ones would've been yummy too if they had vegetables I liked. Also when it's not busy checkout is easy because they slapped mitsuwa barcode stickers, when it was busy ( weekend) they had a service down the line/checkout deal. Overall mitsuwa has always been a great place to hang and get food, but parking can be hard to find on the weekend. They really need to figure out the parking situation cuz idk where else to park??? They have these chu his that are like under $5 with 4.9% alch which are lighter in flavor but still yummy. I don't usually go so I was surprised to see they seem to have more pop ups now and the foodcourt is becoming more revamped/pretty.

Yelp
Loved the marketplace, there are so many great food kiosks, there is Daiso you can shop, and there is also a grocery store. I bought some really nice sushi and they were delicious. There is also really good number of seating tables that you can enjoy food, there was also really good fancy sweets shop. I liked it very much.

Yelp
Santouka Ramen is great ramen. Unpretentiously good food with no price hike. Service is great at this place they have so many choices of Ramen and a set menu. Santouka ramen is located at the food court of the Mitsuwa Market. They have plenty of seats and choices of dining options. This place reminds me of Japan on a much smaller scale.
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
Mitsuwa never disappoints. They have some of the freshest Japanese seafood around. The king crab is a favorite of mine, and the sushi is always on point. The hot food section is solid too, perfect when you want something quick but still really tasty. You can tell they care about quality. Great cuts of fresh fish and well-prepared. & don't skip the Oreo cheesecake. If you're looking for an authentic Japanese market it's worth the trip.

Yelp
A supermarket complex that specialized in Japaneses made products. We visited the food court there on a Friday evening around 5:30 pm. The food court is adjacent to the market and is spacious. Not many customers were there at the time but it was full by the time we finished eating around 6:30 pm. The place is clean and provides lots of seatings for dining in. Food prices are very affordable. We ordered 2 bowls of ramen, one with miso soup one with shio (salt) soup. These are the famous Hokkaido ramen by Santonka. We also ordered a Chicken Cutlet with curry (Miyaki Tei). It took a while for the order to be ready. The ramens were very good with either broth. The chicken cutlet portion was big. The chicken meat was tender and tasted just right with the curry sauce and the Japanese rice. Overall it's worth the trip and will definitely visit again when in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Grace H.

Yelp
I love mitsuwa! There is always a large selection of Japanese goods, and they also have produce in smaller portions, which is helpful for those who live alone! They also have good deals discounted produce that needs to go quickly. The food court has lots of options and is a good place to meet up with friends. Note: parking can get pretty tight especially around busy hours
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Got lunch at the Mitsuwa Cafeteria area. Seating can be hard for large tables, so I would look for one before getting your food. Parking gets packed. There is the regular parking and underground parking, but they're both not big. The food is always good. The curry with pork katsu came out very fast despite the large number of people. I was ultimately satisfied with the price and the food taste. I would rate the katsu a solid 3.5/5, it does the trick!
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
I like this market, they got everything I'm looking for but the prices are not that cheap but understand. They do have hot/cold food court plus bakery. Great and friendly staff. They also have the food court with plenty of yummy foods. Parking can be suck!!! Since there is only one way in and out and underground and outside parkings.

Summer S.

Yelp
Parking lot is small there's a wait to catch a spot. The entrance has old fried food and sashimi out n about not really refrigerated. The market is very scarce with mini daiso vibes unappetizing. The food court areas more lively with okay prices. Alot of trinkets Knick knacks sold.
google avatar

Sylvie C.

Yelp
Love the selection of food court, shampoo selection, and built in Daiso. Parking a bit weird and cramped. I really don't care for the stench emanating from the dumpster next to the entrance. I wish the store layout is less confusing. The selection of grocery food items are nothing you can't really find elsewhere like Seiwa or Tokyo Central. The prices are comparable. Unless I want specific shampoo or something, I wouldn't be going out of my way to visit.
google avatar

Avishek C.

Yelp
Are you bored of the garden variety dining experience? Are you weary of sitdown restaurants? Do you yearn for a dinig experience that will take you away from the same old same old? Then you gotta check out the cafeteria in Mitsuwa. First and foremost, parking is a patience game. You will find a spot, but you gotta be cool and look around. Check the underground lot out. Maybe you will need to do 2 or 3 laps around the lot. But, you will find a place to park. It's a question of when and not if. After you park and walk into the market, you will find an actual grocery store part on the left. I wnet there and was like ok whatever. But the star of the show is on your right as you enter. There are several stalls that serve all kinds of japanese foods. Tempura, ramen, katsu, you name it! Oh and if you are a beer lover, there is a beer stall that has a great collection of common japanese beers on tap. Definately try a couple of beers out. While you get the food, it's wise to have someone from your party on seat finding duty. The cafetria gets busy. And you will have to be on your game to find a table. Don't hesitate to hover around tables that seem like they will be empty soon. It's a game of musical chairs. But if you just can't find a seat, there are places to stand and eat like your a horse. Check this place out if you are in the mood for something different.

Yelp
I love this Mitsuwa market! I love that they have events and vendors from time to time. One of my favorites was when a company from Japan brought their black garlic, yuzu gin, and yuzu dressings (this happened in August).Tak & Tiger from black garlic and yuzu event were also such a pleasure to talk with! I also like that they have a food court that has a lot of different dishes and drinks to offer. The supermarket is sizable with many different options for groceries and even has a bakery in it, which is one of my favorite bakeries! I also love that they conveniently have a Daiso as well as a small stationary store. Overall, I quite love this Mitsuwa since it's so big and has so much to offer!

Yelp
TIME WARP!!! I love when I can step into a store and I literally feel like I stepped into another country ,city or town! That's exactly what happens when you walk into Mitsuwa Market! Right off the bat as soon as you step inside they have samples of things 90% of Americans have never had! Like Black garlic,or dried squid chips. Or Royce chocolate! I mean this place is endless, it's like a miniature mall, it has clothes, grocery store, desserts, restaurants I was shocked they weren't selling insurance hahaha Jkjk. All the food we had was great, so much to choose from im going to need more time to talk about the highlights !!! But the best thing was the PRICE!!! $23 for two full meals plus drinks, I felt like I was in the 90's!!!(good ol days) But all in all I'm happy I was told about this Hidden not so hidden gem! If you in coast Mesa this place is a must see. And if you go be fearless and try all the weird samples they give out (when in rome) We Love Mitsuwa Marketplace!!!!!

Yelp
Visited this place frequently when I lived in OC. The food is a hit or miss for me, but I rated it three stars because they didn't permit my fur baby to come inside.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic Japanese products, don't look too far and come visit here. Yes, it is a little bit on a pricy side but the quality is the best. This marketplace has a market, food court, bakery, Daiso and other small shops that it is pretty much for all generations. They recently renovated so it is more chic, organized and clean. From freshly made food everyday to special items imported from Japan, they have everything you need. There also have a terrific customer service that doesn't disappoint. It feels like you're in Japan with their great hospitality. The parking is a little bit of a mad house but the traffic flows so you won't have a hard time finding a spot. I strongly recommend trying one of the restaurants in the food court since anything you try, it's excellent. REN Matcha & Mochi finally opened and the line was incredibly long so get on that line as soon as possible if you want to try their sweet treats.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
You can't beat the price ! $10 for chicken katsu curry plate ! Can't change spice level or cheese but for what you pay it's great. Service is fast and there's plenty of seating. Would come back to try the other food stalls here.

Yelp
My new favorite stop for an onigiri fix and my favorite Japanese candy and ramen finds. In order to grab the onigiri be sure that I stop in before 3PM (as visits after this time I am not guaranteed to find my tuna mayo onigiri). This location is always busy! Keep in mind you may have to circle the lot a few times to find parking. There is a single level parking structure under the building as well. Daiso and a small toy vending machine section is located from inside Mitsuwa also, beside the food court. Best part: their food court!! So many delicious ramen, fried rice, donburi, and even a bbq grill venue -I haven't had a chance to try that one just yet. You will NOT be disappointed!

Yelp
My go to Japanese market. I always get sashimi here and I love their sushi rolls. I usually grab an egg sandwich from their bakery too. Staff is always friendly.

Yelp
Mitsuwa Marketplace is a fantastic place to shop for Asian food, groceries, products, drinks, and knick-knacks. This location is in Costa Mesa, within walking distance from the Crowne Plaza and Hilton hotels. Inside, there is a Daiso, a boba shop, the cutest Asian stationary store, a store filled with toy dispensers, an Asian food court, and the actual grocery store section. The food court has so many delicious restaurants including an amazing udon shop, ramen shop, and katsu curry shop. The stationary store has the best pen supplies with so many different colors and classic Asian gum. The toy dispenser store has the cutest toys including many Sanrio toys/figurines. Inside the grocery store, there is an Asian bakery and a section where they sell packaged sushi and hot cooked food. I bought the yellowtail nigiri, spicy salmon poke, and broiled salmon. I really enjoyed the yellowtail nigiri and spicy salmon poke. The boiled salmon was a bit too salty and the texture was too tough. I also ate at the food court and the food was delicious. The grocery store also sells Asian skin care products and household items. Customer service out checkout was good.
google avatar

Joan D.

Yelp
I'm glad it's now attached by Del Amo mall. You can walk through here and find different food depending on what you're craving for. Sushi, Curry, Udon, Ramen, Tempura, Matcha desserts, mochi, donuts, coffee, boba, Korean corn dog, bento boxes. If you want a quick stop and don't want to wait for your order, you can also go to the grocery store and grab ready-made sushi, bentos, katsu, onigiris and more! Pay at the cashier and bring your food to eat at the food court area. Sitting area are spacious and I always find somewhere to sit down even on busy times.

Yelp
I like the store very much, I think its a great place to explore and find great things to eat. The problem I have that everyone seems to have is the parking. Its freaking awful and rude people physically standing in empty spaces to hold is infuriating. I don't know how they can fix this but I'm not coming back any time soon because of it. Its a shame because its a cool place...
google avatar

Steven S H C.

Yelp
Nice place to visit. All of the merchandise are from Japan with few exceptions like soju. Loved to admire the mochi that's very artistic. Large area with individual restaurants with different specialty. Great place to stop by and grab something to eat while shopping.

Yelp
Mitsuwa Marketplace located in Costa Mesa offers hot and ready meals that serve as the perfect lunch. The service is very fast with self checkout and the ambiance of the marketplace was lively and well. Overall this amount of food for the cheap price is 100% worth it. The main downside is finding parking on a busy day but if you find parking quick the experience is incredible worth.

Yelp
Half Price Sales - 5kg (11lbs) Rice $34.99 / $69.98 in Japan Too much overprice in japanese market in California. 20lbs rice bag is $9.99 in other American market in California.

Yelp
Oh the choices galore here!! From sushi, ramen, tempura, yakitori and draft beer choices all in one food court inside the market. Boba, mochi, apple pie pastry and shave ice desserts all available to your liking. Come hungry and order from different stalls so you can taste more than one. Unlike restaurants, this place won't brake your bank. It's inside the market so they have the proximity of getting the ingredients right there, perhaps that's why the food court menu is cheap!! First come first grab table and seats, so good luck during weekends. Busy and high energy noise coming here in the weekend. Eat first so you can walk it off while doing your grocery after. I would definitely come back to try more. Restaurant like meals for the price of a cafeteria. Love it!!

Yelp
If you like Japanese markets, it's good. You can try different food stalls, but they seem similar in that 3 of 4 serve curry and katsu. Santouka has good salted ramen. The other food stall serves thin sliced charcoal grilled beef TONGUE! YUM! Very popular among visitors and smells Devine!

Yelp
I've been shopping at this store since 1994 before it was Mitsuwa when it was Yaohan. Good product selection with fair pricing and wonderful food court. Some of the staff are wonderful and have been working there more than 10 years, but today I was shocked as a customer of 30+ years. A Japanese store employee was fighting loudly at the flower display. He was being rude to her for more than 5 minutes telling her how to arrange the flowers. She responded politely, but he was so rude that I asked him in Japanese if it's okay to talk that way in front of customers. "お客さんの前でそんな話し方大丈夫なの?" He responded without using honorific keigo just saying "totally". 全然! I was so shocked that I walked away. I expect more professionalism from store employees.
