I'd never had burgers from the MIx'd Up Burger truck before paying a visit to the brand-new (opened as of 5/8/17) sit-down Mix'd Up restaurant in East Lake. This spot can be found in a freshly developed area, with Poor Hendrix on the same corner and Greater Good BBQ across the street.
You order at the counter, fix your own fountain drink, and seat yourself. In addition to inside, there are some tables and chairs outside, both facing the street and in a little neighboring alley. Mix'd Up's tagline is "A Rockin' Experience," and there's a music theme in the decor, with a Bob Marley piece and a metal guitar sculpture on the wall. Despite the gray industrial theme, the multiple glass windows let in some sunny cheer and brightness.
The name Mix'd Up had me thinking there would be some really wacky burgers. The craziest offering had crawfish on it! I liked how there were non-beef options too such as a lamb, black bean, turkey, and chorizo. I decided to go for simple and classic, getting the Mix'd Up burger ($7) which consisted of a 1/2 lb Angus beef patty, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Instead of fries, I opted for a super salad (side $4.50, entree size $8). This salad included kale, spinach, a spring mix, pecans, strawberries, and feta. Out of five dressings, red wine vinegar was my final answer.
The burgers showed up relatively quickly. I liked the Mix'd Up burger which was cooked as specified and came on a hearty soft brioche-like bun. However, the raw onions were chopped into tiny bits which made it easy for said bits to fall out. I added a little ketchup to my burger. I only realized later that you could request special sauces to your burger for 50 cents more: a house recipe, honey mustard, and sriracha mayo. Wish a little more cheese had been slapped on but oh well.
The super salad was of a reasonable size, and the dressing was tart and herb-y, great. I do wish there were some more strawberries and pecans. Honestly, I don't think I realized pecans were in there. I had a few fingers of the buffalo fries ($5) and liked them.
Parking: There seemed to be a lot of street parking available, as well as a lot behind Mix'd Up. You can access the lot from Second Avenue, just south of the restaurant.
Service: Welcoming, laid-back, nice. The runner even brought us more water since we were sitting outside and melting.
Verdict: Would definitely return to try out some other burgers. I already decided to bring some fellow burger lovers next time.
