3 Michelin-Recommended Banquet Restaurants in Taipei

"Veteran chef Dong cut his teeth at the most distinguished restaurants in Taipei’s golden era and today presents his repertoire of intricate banquet dishes at Mipon. One example is the fried shrimp cake—something that is rarely found nowadays. The dish uses more than three hundred catties of lard from black pigs, which is shaped, cut into 0.1-cm slices and then further bisected into half that thickness. These paper-thin wrappers of fat are then used to envelope shrimp and water chestnut and deep-fried into golden medallions on the plate." - MICHELIN Guide Taipei Editorial Team

3 Michelin-recommended Banquet Restaurants In Taipei

"Helmed by veteran chef Dong—who cut his teeth at Taipei’s most distinguished restaurants during the golden era—this restaurant (MICHELIN Plate, MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2018) presents intricate banquet dishes with craft and nostalgia. A standout is the rarely seen fried shrimp cake: more than three hundred catties of lard from black pigs are shaped, sliced into 0.1cm sheets, then bisected to half that thickness to form paper-thin fat wrappers that envelope shrimp and water chestnut before being deep-fried into golden medallions. “Crystal chandeliers and sumptuous stone trimmings contrast starkly with the rustic faux-bamboo chairs in this bright dining room with its high ceiling and full-length windows. With over forty years of experience, chef Dong aims to impart finesse to Taiwanese cuisine while breaking some rules. Re-invented classics include three-cup chicken and braised fish skin with bok choy. Innovative dishes such as egg omelette eel roll also impress.”" - MICHELIN Guide Taipei Editorial Team

I gotta say for a place that has a lot of prestige I didn't feel as if it was deserved. Starting off with the service, it was very slow and odd to say the least. The kitchen send food to the main area to be served by the waiters. Also our waiter didn't really check on us very much. Onto the food, it was incredibly slow to come out. Each dish came out 1 by 1 so we weren't able to eat them all at the same time. Slow family style Chinese food is pretty uncharacteristic. The beef and peppers were incredible and you could tell they used high quality of beef for it. The roasted rib was also good though it was lacking in salt. The scallops and asparagus was mostly scallops with little veggie, which was odd since it was listed under the veggie section. Finally the fried rice was very good so much so that we ordered it twice (and had to wait 20 mins for the second round). At the end of the day the food was solid but incredibly overpriced, our bill came out to $173 USD which is insane for the couple of dishes we got and we still left hungry.

Overrated and definitely too expensive for the overall experience. While a few dishes stand out with some creative twists and interesting flavors, the rest are just ordinary and feel like standard Taiwanese home-style meals. The balance between quality and price simply doesn’t justify the hype. It’s the kind of place that tries to be inventive but ends up delivering a mix of hits and misses, leaving you wondering if the premium cost is really worth it.

The starters are great with some good surprises. The 佛跳牆 is average with no spoon provided to taste the ingredients more easily. The third one is great with the sense of Taiwan Origin Food. Then the lobster.... so difficult to take the meat out with only a fork. Yet the taste is good. And then the shrimp ball is average with expected flavors, but the vegetables are fully soaked with the ginger taste instead of the ingredient itself. The roll is a disaster with everything not sticking together. Long story short, it is just an average experience considering the Michelin recommendation and the identity of tasting the Taiwan culture. Service-wise, average with a lady did ask me how my meal was but I was left an empty cup of tea for a long time twice. Ambience-wise, it is more likely to be a family restaurant with families and business gatherings talking all at once.

A friend and I had dinner here Friday at 6:30. From the moment we stepped in the vibe was weird. Nobody was at the stand to greet us. We flagged someone down and they found our reservation and seated us. They offered us a choice of tea and that was it. We booked the tasting menu when we made our reservations and when the first course came out the server just put it in front of us and left. Didn't say a word to us or explain what the dish was. This happened with the next two courses too. Finally I got up to ask for the menu since they had no interest in telling us what we were eating. Also they seemed to forget one of the dishes and brought it out late. Also the gua bao was served in plastic wrap. At least the server told us to remove it, but really? The food was fine but the service was appalling. I received a discount from my credit card so it was whatever, but if I had paid full price I would've complained. The staff was so unprofessional. They were all standing behind the bar gossiping, not even paying attention to the dining room and it took several minutes for anyone to look over so I could get the bill. Not sure how this place has a Michelin star.

Food was good. Quite tasty Chinese kitchen. Portions are towards small I would have to say for Taiwanese standards and price value is not good. Too expensive for what it offers. Desserts were bad, you can find better ones in street food. Savory dishes were prepared fast and they were tasty however a bit of a kick was missing. Menu had recently changed and new menu was much smaller , without photos and more expensive. This led to disappointment from our side. Overall an ok experience but there are better places to visit in Taipei.

Google
I assume their set course did not earn them their 1 Michelin star. 100% not worth $3800 per person. I think they basically took elements of a la cart dish and put them together. But the flavour is quite disjointed and mid. In total, I give the first appetizer course and the lobster a passing grade. The fried shrimp shaped like fish is cute but greasy and flavourless. The pork ribs has a nice texture and flavour which would’ve been good if it’s not getting cold. 佛跳牆沒有拉絲但味道還可以。 steam cuttlefish ball has good texture but again little flavour. The eel on oil rice is fishy. Now onto service… the service is clumsy. Server would carelessly bump into patrons. Asked for drink menu which never came. Not a single course was introduced. They would serve you food over your shoulder. Change plate then immediately take it away as they realized you don’t need it.

Google
Excellent food, well deserving of their Michelin ranking year after year. Everything tasted fresh and not overly greasy or seasoned which I loved. The White Water Snowflake veggie dish was especially wonderful - we don't have those particular vegetables in the US so it was definitely a special taste and texture. The braised beef short ribs were also incredible! Also loved the mushroom in clay pot dish. I'd gotten spoiled by most of the service in Taiwan so I expected a place like this in its extremely grand digs to have great service but it didn't. We were ignored until I flagged a waiter down to order and then I again had to catch someone to pay at the end. The hotel the restaurant is situated in is opulent as heck but the restaurant itself is pretty standard Chinese banquet style with very ordinary decor.

It located in a very grand hotel. The restaurant is clean with good ambience, staffs were friendly and helpful. We ordered a lot for just 2 of us. I would say all foods are great and tasty. If you are a Singapore Airlines PPS member, you can ask for a form to fill up to earn mileage points. Awesome!

Yelp
Date of visit: 10/19/2024 One of the best meal I had in Taipei Want to experience Taiwanese food in an upscale setting that's also a Michelin-starred? Try Mipon! My orders: - stir fried king oyster mushrooms with three cup sauce: ORDER IT! - crispy shrimp pancake - pan fried pork liver: YUMMY! And I don't even normally eat innards lol - dried radish omelette - pan fried diced beef with garlic - stir fried chicken drumsticks with three cup sauce: VERY GOOD! I love three cup sauce so we ordered one more with mushrooms. - honey mustard glazed ribs: yum! - whole fish with taro soup: SO GOOD! - jumbo shrimps with noodle: MUST ORDER! - a special Taiwanese vegetable I don't remember the name ( I'm sorry! T.T ) - dried scallop white egg fried rice: bland. - sweet & sour fish - red bean steamed bun All of them were excellent except the fried rice that I felt a bit on the bland side. Highly recommended!

Yelp
We wanted to try a Michelin starred restaurant during our visit to Taipei, so we decided to check this place out. The restaurant is located in the Grand Mayfull Hotel. The dining area is spacious and decadently decorated with chandeliers and marble. The dining atmosphere was a little stuffy in our opinion. Service was as expected from a Michelin restaurant, excellent. We ordered the Roast Bone-In Beef Short Rib with Chef Special Sauce (tender and savory), Honey Mustard Glazed Ribs (not to sweet), White Water Snowflake (too much ginger), Fried Rice with Mullet Roe (cooked perfectly), and the Jellyfish Salad (vinegar-based sauce, refreshing, and lovely texture). In all honesty, the food was good and prepared well, but it did not impress us. The flavor profile of the dishes leaned toward the lighter side. For a Michelin restaurant it was not terribly pricey. The price for two people and five dishes, including tax and tip, came out to little over $4500 NTD (or approximately $143 USD). Was the food good? Overall, yes (but was not blown away). Was the service and dining experience good? Yes. Would I go back? Probably not.

Yelp
Okay, maybe this is from a tourist but I do think this is a 5/5 restaurant for Taiwanese cuisine experience. Been missing the panfried pork liver from Xin Yeh from our last two visits in Taiwan, both five years apart and Mipon this time. Sooo good. Also really enjoyed the fish skin cabbage which is hard to find anywhere outside Taiwan. Three cup oyster mushrooms is outstanding. Egg omelette is very tasty. Not to mention the pork ribs. Loved our time here.

Yelp
I applaud their attempt to serving Taiwanese cuisine in an upscale setting, and they do have something special, such as craft oolong beers not sold elsewhere. Their dishes are reasonable. I give them only 3 stars as I just couldn't find anything that's outstanding. They do charge much higher than usual, but I assume it's for the decors.
