The 12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"A neighborhood joint so good it had to open another location, Miyako Japanese Restaurant serves sushi and other Japanese cuisine in a familial, warm space. The bento boxes are the ideal lunch options starring Chilean miso sea bass or Miyako beef roll, as are other dishes like the chicken teriyaki dinner, rock sugar salmon, fiery noodle or rice bowls and pan-fried gyozo bites." - Nadia Gire

Emin Karagöz

Google
We loved this place. We celebrated my wifes birthday. They had most delicious sushi, as well as amazing service.

Tram Ngu

Google
The best place for standard & affordable sushi. Their pricings are crazily affordable. I was totally shocked 😱 But the quality is good! The fish was super fresh. The service was amazing, so friendly and dedicated. Our server changed our plates for different courses, nigiris & rolls to stir-fried udon, and to fried rice.

Google
I accidentally found this place for dinner. It was unexpected, but they have amazing happy hours Monday to Friday from 3-7pm. The sushi rolls were flavorful and yummy, and they were offered at very affordable prices. The service was quick and the server had a great attitude. I couldn't ask for more. I'll probably go back to this place within a week.

Google
I had the pleasure of visiting a spacious restaurant with a wide array of food options. The Kamikaze maki roll was delightful. I didn't have to wait at all during my first visit, and the food arrived promptly with an exquisite presentation. An added perk is that the restaurant is open until 11 pm on Sundays. I am already looking forward to my next visit.

Google
Came here for the first time and decided to the try their happy hour option. The fried dumplings were a 1/5 no flavor at all, the drinks were a 3/5. The service was definitely great!.

Google
This place is absolutely amazing for celebrating our most special occasions with our big family! The food here is unbelievably delicious. The servers are incredibly sweet and kind, going above and beyond to make your experience unforgettable. And guess what? The prices are super affordable, so you can indulge in fantastic food and receive outstanding service without breaking the bank. It's a total win-win situation! Oh, and let me tell you about the weekdays happy hour. It is absolutely worth it! From 5pm to 7pm and again from 9pm, you can enjoy some incredible deals that will make your evenings even more delightful.

Google
The food was delicious & came out very quickly. I feel like everything was priced well for the quality. The service was also really great. Our server was very attentive & sweet the entire evening. I got the ginger rice and there was a little presentation at the table where the chef mixes in the egg, I thought that was pretty neat. The only sort of downside is the parking. If you want to park directly up front, you have to pay valet. Not sure how much it was, but we parked in the back. There was plenty of space and the walk was less than a minute. Overall a great experience, will definitely go back to try other delicious options.

Yelp
Used to be really nice, something about this place that keeps bringing you back. its spacious, fast, and the servers are very attentive, sushi is not as fresh as it used to be but their seating is wonderful

Yelp
Omg the food at Miyako is delicious, i usually get their Shrimp yaki ramen bowl and i order extra sauce, can't remember the name. I look forward to visiting again! Their menu is very affordable.

Yelp
The service was great. The sushi was wonderful. The ramen was mediocre with very little flavor even with adding spice. The alcoholic drinks were smaller than expected. It was Friday so parking was limited.

Yelp
This is a big restaurant with plenty of seating indoor only. My party came during lunch and it wasn't crowded. We got a table immediately. There were so many options to choose from the menu. There was a limited happy hour menu too whole every Saturday and Sunday. Some food we ordered were tiger eye maki, crunchy maki, kamikaze maki, s & m maki, Mardi Gras maki, Miyako special maki, scallop nigiri, and unagi nigiri. We also had the happy hour drinks; son of a peach, lemon drop, candy crush, and water my melon. All our rolls were great. We had no complaints, only praises for the delicious food. The drinks were good too but mine weren't strong enough. My drinks tasted kinda watered down. We received excellent service today. Our waitress kept checking on us, and she serviced with a smile. Parking isn't an issue here since there is a big parking lot at the front. There is additional parking at the back of the strip mall too. I will come back again.

Yelp
I went here on a weekday and I believe it was for happy hour. The prices were definitely worth it. You can see more of the quality of the food if you go directly on my TikTok. Thegifted___

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed my time here with fellow yelpers! We ordered a spread of sushi and it did not disappoint! They gave us a special Saturday and Sunday menu that was more like a happy hour menu, which had great prices! They had some creative cocktails - I ordered Water My Melon. It was sweet and tart and I could taste the strawberry flavor more than the watermelon! I specifically ordered the Miyako Special roll. I like rolls that are more on the plain side and this fit the bill. It was made with tuna, salmon and avocado. That was delicious along with the crispy tuna roll from the regular menu. I had this at another restaurant but this one was completely fried so that it was super crunchy on the outside. Sooo delicious! The other roll I tried was the S & M Maki. Also very good! I only ate one of those but wanted more! The sushi here is delicious and I love the variety of the happy hour menu. We stayed for a few hours and the staff was super friendly, continuing to check on us to make sure we were ok the entire time. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
My Favorite Sushi and Miso Soup Restaurant.... I've been to this absolutely magnificent restaurant for years, and always enjoy the service and assistance for the amazing prepared meals and drinks that I receive each time I visit.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
I was definitely a little disappointed. The food was just okay. The portion sizes are very generous for the price which is a plus, but the food was definitely lacking a little flavor. Everything came to the table super fast and our server was very friendly and attentive. The table we sat at was a little sticky from the last customer and the overall cleanliness was a little underwhelming. Not a horrible overall experience, but I definitely might shop around for a different sushi place.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Service was great! Comfortable restaurant. Happy hour menu is very reasonable.

Yelp
First time trying this sushi restaurant in Houston. The experience was great, the waitress was very informative and had great recommendations. Some of the best Crispy Rice I've had in a very long time. It was also nice to sit at the sushi bar and watch those talented sushi chefs.

Yelp
Food is always fresh and service is great !! I come to this location every week for the happy hour menu. Ac always running and everyone is always friendly. Very clean and happy vibes make it extra fun

Maria P.

Yelp
One of our favorite places to dine. My family and I all love to eat here. Kids love it too. Favorites are S&M, NY rolls. Yaki noodles are also delicious. Staff is friendly. Manager is also very kind and welcomes us back each time. Atmosphere is nice and relaxed. Only downside is parking is tight but for us it's worth the 45 minute drive. Highly recommend going

Yelp
Food was great we went during happy hour at around 9pm and we got el Pacifico and a pineapple mojito and it was great! I understand it was happy hour so it was busy but it took them at least 15 min to even get our drinks even though she was right next to us.
google avatar

Che M.

Yelp
Miyako was perfect for a weekday happy hour adventure. The rolls for Happy Hour were diverse and delicious. Drinks were a hit as well. Our server Lidia took great care of us. The restaurant was really chill. We had a great time. I'm only visiting but will return on my next visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved it food and staff were great I went on a bit of a bar crawl on Westhimer and this was one of my fav ones
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely, one of the best Japanese Cuisine restaurants to dine-in, in the Houston area. Cleanliness = check Ambiance = check Food =One menu item form me was a little misleading in the naming. For instance the name of the Cauliflower dish could be bettered suited as Fried Cauliflower instead of Cauliflower fries, you be the judge by the pic. Service, gets a deduction on this visit. Here's why it's important to know your dishes and remember when a guest says they eat vegan. Having to send dishes back because of the ingredients can be a little disheartening and takes away from that first prepared delivery of the dish for a do-over. However the food is always great, I just hope to see more vegan options on the menu, upon my next visit. Unless, I find better fried rice, they are stuck with me. Until next time, Bye-Bye!

Yelp
AWESOME! This is one of my new fav sushi places in town. My 6 year old son and I love to eat sushi and some places just don't care about kids. They were so nice and really accommodating. Great staff and experience. I will go back many times!
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Although this place does not have the best quality sushi in Houston, it has none the less the best happy hours and best food for your buck. The whole entire menu is good and the sushi rolls are very good. I love coming to the spot.
google avatar

Raven T.

Yelp
Always have a great time when I come here happy hour is amazing ! I always have a lychee martini with the "New York maki" and a few other items on happy hour. Staff is always pleasant. Today I brought my son here for his first sushi experience and he said "10/10"
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
I was there for lunch. I saw a reasonably priced seafood ramen for $10. The salmon based broth has noodles, seaweed, a half boiled egg and other items. Two tempura shrimp accompanied the soup. I wasn't crazy about the soup flavor. The noodles were doughy. While I'm not an expert on ramen, I believe I've had better flavors.
google avatar

Diana J.

Yelp
This place is ok. Service is ok. Sushi was a bit expensive for what you get. Not really great food. Probably will not try again.
google avatar

Mia M.

Yelp
I've been going to miyakos since I was a little kid! It's been a tradition in my family to go every time we have a special occasion like a birthday or celebration something good happening! My favorite dish is the S&M roll! Been getting that roll since forever. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
They have a nice happy hour, but I don't think I would come outside of that. The place is clean and there wasn't a wait when we got there. The service on drinks and food were both slow. We had a medium sized group, and they consistently forgot drink and food orders. One person in our group never got anything they ordered. Everything I tried was tasty but pretty average. The cocktails are strong so be careful lol. Some of the staff were friendly while the others were not. Our tables never got cleaned off throughout dining, which made for a mess given that there were lots of small plates ordered. Once huge turnoff was at checkout. When we received our ticket there was an auto gratuity there (which was fine for the group size) however, they had changed the gratuity from the 18% on the menu to 23% without letting us know. When we brought it up to the manager, she changed it back to 18%. Just be aware of that! Overall nice place for happy hour!

Yelp
Food was good I will give it a 8 and price is good as well. Parking- I will say this today at 5:30 pm valet person was setting up but I've seen there was a empty spot no cone at all I was backing up and valet person threw a cone in the back of my car while i was parking which I said really I was already parking and I have a kid in the car and he said well I have a job which I understand but it was a empty spot I parked at with no cone and when he saw me parking just a thew a cone to make seem like it was his spot like wtf. Very disrespectful valet guy.

Yelp
4.4 rating. at the lunchtime, Bento box variety shared, and the sushi was very good.Definitely above average. The udon was also very clear. Flavorful and noodles were soft. We ordered the calamari that was fried as an appetizer. It was huge and excellent in this category.
google avatar

Mahwish S.

Yelp
I have been to this location multiple times. The food and service has been good every time I have came! The sushi is fresh. I love the spicy edamame as a starter. Lychee martinis are my favorite! Forgive me for not including the names of the rolls because I forget them. But if you see something you like you can always show it to the server and ask them what it is.

Armen Y.

Yelp
It has nice environment, but I had to wait several minutes until someone help me seated. I ordered lobster roll, salmon sashimi, seaweed salad and miso soup. Salad was average, sashimi was good and lobster roll was average too. Overall was good, but I was expecting better.
google avatar

Preston I.

Yelp
Came here for the late night happy hour from 9- close. Try the chicken karaage. Definitely one of my favorite appetizers. I also tried the Tsunami maki and the el Pacifico maki. Both were pretty good. The tsunami has a strong sardine taste tho, so avoid it if you don't like sardines. I also tried the sake bomb with Sapporo beer and the mango fever. Both were kinda weak, but the cocktail tasted good. Also my waiter was awesome. He checked on me often and gave great recommendations. The booths are nice and spacious. Parking is shared with other businesses, so the number of spots is limited. Lot is also very small so sometimes hard to drive through when other cars are around.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been to Miyako a few times but this time really made me come to the conclusion that I'm just not a fan. I ordered the crab puffs and I did not enjoy it. While it was fresh and hot, it just did not taste authentic. Same with the fried rice, It lacked flavor in the proteins and overall rice. I ordered the lobster sushi roll and again it was not giving quality authentic sushi and the sauce that came with it was terrible. The presentation was cute though. The only thing that I thought was delicious were the wings! They were the bomb.com but it was like on a secret menu or something. I hear they have a decent happy hour so maybe people come here for that and enjoy it but me not so much
google avatar

Kingsley N.

Yelp
By far one of the best Japanese Cuisine restaurants that I have been to. Came with some friends and really enjoyed ourselves. The service was great, they where not to annoying nor to absent if you know what I mean. The food was great, no complaints here. Parking at times can be a little tough if you come at a busy time. The food is not to expensive and there is happy hour so that is always a plus! Definitely should try this place if you haven't been, and definitely should come back if you have been ! Cuz I would definitely be back !!!
google avatar

Aimee G.

Yelp
Waiters weren't great BUT food made up for it! So good!! We ordered 2 sushi rolls, the crab meat puffs and the pork gyozas!

Evelyn R.

Yelp
Went yesterday Saturday and Mere the kitchen manager went and he gave us excellent service and quality and brought us really delicious food , really recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Jon B.

Yelp
Cam here with some friends for dinner and we weren't disappointed. We dined outside and ordered everything under the sun: Sake, tempura, Miso, and a host of rolls such as Spider, Magic mike and the amazing calamari. Good service and flavorful fresh sushi We will be back !
google avatar

Reema G.

Yelp
I've been coming here since 2019 and the quality is still so good to this day. I'm such a fan of their gyozas and fried rice. They have several different happy hours throughout the day. Affordable and yummy. On really busy nights, their service can be subpar. But I wouldn't trade for another sushi place.

Veronica M.

Yelp
Sushi is always great!!! Never had an issue with customer service! We've sat inside and outside and never had an issue. That's my sushi spot!

Omar B.

Yelp
My favorite sushi spot valet always takes care of me and my car when I go on the weekends.
google avatar

Dalia Y.

Yelp
Love this place we used to live close by and moved several years ago and guess what we were in the area last week and we decided to give a try and it was the same or even better than what we remembered.
google avatar

Akhilesh B.

Yelp
This place does have some decent food and a lot of options to choose from. I loved their dim intimate lighting from before but it's not that bad. Maggy waited our table and she was efficient and polite.
google avatar

Sydney C.

Yelp
I really like Miyako. I come here all the time. The place is clean and the ambience is cute. I really like their food especially the S&M roll. Their drinks/cocktails are good but they always take forever to make them. They have a really nice happy hour as well.

Victoria S.

Yelp
This is disappointing and disgusting. Roaches in the kitchen and the food. I've been a customer for almost 10 years, told friends about this place. The fact that I've eaten here so many times and this happened just makes nauseous.
google avatar

Jade J.

Yelp
I haven't been to this establishment in easily over 10 years. My husband and I decided to drop in for dinner and to be honest, I was expecting a fairly mediocre meal. Boy, I've never been so glad to be proven wrong! I ordered the beef teriyaki with pretty low expectations. Let me tell you, this beef teriyaki was the best beef teriyaki I've had in years! My steak wasn't over cooked (medium rare), the beef was tender and flavorful, and the teriyaki was not too sweet. To compare steak to steak - I ordered the ribeye steak at Caracol ($$$) and this teriyaki steak blew that expensive meal out of the water! (To be fair to Caracol, I think seafood is their strong point and not steaks as I had to send my steak back twice for being cooked well done.) However, I still think that says a lot about my beef teriyaki experience here. A+ in my book! And the fried rice that came with it, was pretty good as well. For someone who's picky about steak and fried rice, I was pleasantly surprised and delightfully happy with my dining experience here. To make things even better, the restaurant was playing some early 2000s music....totally my jam and had me in the happiest of moods while taming the hangry. It was a perfect evening!
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
First time coming. The place looks nice. The atmosphere is easternize. The people are nice and quick with the service. But, the food was not it. I have a particular sophisticated palette and this food was not my favorite. It was my first time trying any of these dishes. I had no idea what any of the dishes were. Ended up getting miso soup. Wouldn't recommend. It's a nice place to try for the first time. Wouldn't come a second time.
google avatar

Chiemela U.

Yelp
Miyakos is a nice date restaurant. I thoroughly recommend it. The food is amazing and the drinks are good especially during happy hour. The flaming lobster roll is good but the flaming garlic butter (which was on fire) was disgusting. I recommend just asking for regular garlic butter instead of the one that comes with it. Overall: I would definitely still come back to this place
google avatar

Cassie H.

Yelp
Restaurant staff wore masks and checked temps as you enter. Clean interior and bathrooms. Full menu available even at lunch (if you're not taking part of the lunch menu). Our waitress was attentive but also allowed our table convo to flow. The rolls were fresh and flavorful, and we ate twice as much as we thought we would!!! My mom thought the Unaju Don was a little on the too sweet side, but the sea bass appetizer was a huge table hit. It was piping hot and melt in your mouth buttery. I always order a version of tuna tataki (here the blackened tuna sashimi), and it was fresh and flavorful, but not the best I have ever had. We took pictures as attached, and my favorites were the Love Is In The Air, Mango Go, and the Magic Mike (not pictured).
google avatar

Brianna I.

Yelp
Miyako's is always a hit, but make sure you have reservations or you will be waiting. It's a tight lot so trying to find parking is always the downfall when trying to dine here. Overall, it's a great place for really good tasting sushi that's not so pricey. Everything is always so fresh and customer service was 10/10.
google avatar

Mimi J.

Yelp
Our go too especially for Happy Hour. I forgot what roll this was but soooo Good with the dumplinhs! We moved from NY and it took a while to find some Good sushi that was local. We even had their salmon entree as well as the garlic noodles. Very delicious as well and Good portions. Will be back especially for Happy Hour!!
google avatar

Kenny M.

Yelp
The valet has been added now it makes it harder to just pull up park and go In a total waste of time. They aren't very responsive when you walk in the door. And the host is slow and had been slow the last three times I visited the restaurant.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
I just realized now after looking at the menu with my katsudon I never got my miso soup or potato salad as mentioned in the dish description. Adding insult to injury.... no real katsudon has Lima beans, green beans and corn. I was completely taken aback when the entree came out. Overall flavor was fine, it was mostly rice and small portion of the chicken. It was probably 2.5 cups of rice! Yikes. As mentioned from other reviewers, the price for the sushi is rather high in comparison to lots of other places. While some of the sushi was good. Asked for pricing for sea urchin, luckily I did. One order of sushi would have been $9! What! And for toro equally pricey. Just simply astounded.
google avatar

Sean L.

Yelp
Excellent sushi menu and very tasty!!!! We enjoyed everything that was brought to our table. The service was great, and our rolls came out super fast!
