YEEESSSS!!! CHEEHOO!!!! THEY'RE OPEN!!! (well, yesterday was a soft opening)
Now THIS place is jus like the local plate lunch & backyard BBQs we have back at home! Reminds me of the times after going to the beach & getting a plate lunch somewhere. You want really great local plate lunches from Hawaii, come here! If you're missing home (like I am), you definitely want to come here!! Tastes jus like home!!!
We were running errands yesterday & was jonzin for some good local food from home. We've been stalking this place since we heard there was a new competition for Hawaiian Bros coming to town. Mo'Bettahs is definitely mo'bettahs than HB!! Mo'Bettahs is near the corner of 75th & Metcalf, right across the street from CVS with their own dedicated parking lot. I think Price Choppers has the same parking lot. Anyways, we stopped by after wifey saw that they were open on Yelp. When we pulled into the parking lot, wifey saw a guy in a green aloha shirt & said "That guy in the green shirt looks local". Come to find out, it was Kimo in the green shirt we saw. We met Kimo & Kalani (the owners) out front & walaau (va la au = talkin long time) about home, reminiscing about our ohana (family), & other local stuff. They invited us in to try out the foods they insisted were as close to home as they could get being in the mainland. They weren't jus "close to home", the food was jus like home!! They use Aloha Shoyu from home in their marinades & sauces. That's the best kine shoyu (or as mainland calls it, soy sauce) any local would agree to. (PS. we found Aloha Shoyu & other local stuff at 888 International Market on 119th St.)
Ok ok, back to Mo'Bettahs. Inside is clean & employees are very nice & polite with the Aloha spirit. We saw canvas photos of places/people from home along with surfboards from home too! Go figure, they even had a wall in the middle of the dining room with jalousies!! I cracked up laughing cause all us locals remember those from childhood days. Remember when we'd sneak back into the house by removing them & climb into the window cause we know it's past curfew? Ohhh the good ol days. Then remember when you'd get caught by dad cause he was sitting on your bed waiting up for you? BUSTED!!! Hahahaha!!!! Hey! They even had POG & Hawaiian Sun drinks (they didn't have jus yet) along with the typical soda fountain drinks.
Now for the food! Yesterday, they only had the mini plate lunches & could do combos so you could taste different dishes. I got the Teri Chicken & Chicken Katsu, then the Pulehu Chicken & Kalua Pig, then the Teri Steak 2x. They didn't have the Shrimp Tempura jus yet. Gotta go back for that. The Teri Chicken has a subtle teri flavor (not overly saucy like HB) & jus the right amount of char on the outside from the hibachi (local style grill). The Chicken Katsu has a thin panko crust & the chicken thigh was kinda thick, but cooked all the way thru. The Pulehu Chicken is seasoned with black pepper, sea salt, & garlic then grilled to perfection. Reminds me of grilled huli huli chicken. Of course huli huli chicken is jus rotisserie chicken over keawe (ke a ve) wood that you'd find all over the place at home. There's typically no sauce to real huli huli chicken. Anyways, the Kalua Pig is slow smoked salted pork for over 10 hours... then perfection has been made!! The Teri Steak is marinated in their very own teriyaki sauce, grilled, & then thinly sliced (super tender).
Each mini plate lunch starts at $9.59 w/ 2 meat choices, 1 scoop mac salad, & 1 scoop white rice. You can also sub the white rice for brown rice or tossed salad (+ $0.75). The regular plate starts at $13.59 w/ 2 meat choices, 1 scoop mac salad, & 2 scoops rice. The Ekolu is if you so hungry & can't decide on which meats you want. It has 3 choice meats, 1 scoop mac salad, 2 scoop rice. The portion sizes is jus like home... choke (plenty) food!!! You'd definitely have leftovers if your eyes are bigger than your opu (stomach). They also do catering... ie. they have a Group Meal (serves 25) for $249.75 & you get 2 choice meats, white rice, mac salad, & comes with plates, cutlery packets, & sauces. More bang for your buck! They also have the Ohana Meal (feeds 4-6), Box Lunch, & A La Carte. Check out the QR code on the take out menu for more info & check out their website.
This is definitely a must for anyone that's been to Hawaii or lived there! This is jus like home!! Now all they need is a Malasadamobile in the parking lot... you know the one with the white & red stripes? Hehehe... I wonder if we can get them up here. Either them or Kamehameha Bakery from Kalihi.
MAHALO NUI LOA & A HUI HOU!!!!
