LA Food Writers Remember Jonathan Gold | Eater LA

"On one walk to a cevicheria I was stopped by two police officers who yelled at me, pulled a pistol and whispered “Boom,” then drove me by a crumbling prison and finally let me out in front of what they said was a much better ceviche restaurant — Mo Chica — and it was the best ceviche I ever had in my life." - Daniela Galarza

Google
Overall the food was good, however service was slow and was very surprised to have a 15% Service charge added to my bill! There was only 3 of us, I paid cash, and no explanation on the charge. I will not be going back.

Google
I'm really impressed! They must have a new cook because their lomo and pollo saltado has some good flavor compared to the last time i at here, a year ago! It's definitely a family favorite nowadays. Fiesta has competition now.

Google
Giving low stars because good is over priced for the amount they give… only 1 tiny sauce with every meal and when I picked up my food and was taking it out of the big, the container was open. Called back immediately and the man told me they couldn’t do anything about it.. not even an extra sauce. I didn’t want my money back, just a new meal.

Son and daughter inlaw took me out for my birthday. Everything was Just wonderful. Waitress are very attentive and friendly also food delicious. As you can see I had the chicken and rice and white beans. Will be back. Update: came back 04/05/2025 with a few friends but unfortunately won't be returning. The temperature outside was 59 degrees and raining the restaurant thermostat was set at 63 degrees. It was very uncomfortable and cold inside that everyone had to eat with their winter coats on, which made it hard moving around and using utensils with outside gear on while at the dining table. I politely asked the waitress if they could please turn on the heat everyone is cold. I was told that "the manager has the thermostat in a locked box and he has the keys". Everyone was concerned about getting sick from the cold so we ate a little then decided to take the rest to go. As we were leaving I wanted to use the bathroom before the drive back to New York and what did I noticed, the thermostat covered by a see through plastic locked 🔒 box set at 63 degrees. To add insult as we were leaving they decided to turn on the heat. Because of the lack of care and comfort to their customers we won't be going back and I can no longer recommend friends and family. You're better off eating home where it is cozy and comfortable. We did find afterwards another Peruvian restaurant in the same town that's rated 5 stars that we will try next time.

Google
Food is good. Always get a hot dog and fries to dip into the green sauce. Fried pork chops are great too. Any food with the green sauce is good! Service could be better but ok. No issue with parking, lot or street. A good place for some Peruvian.

Google
I just uploaded a picture of an order of plantain and it’s honestly so disappointing. My mother orders from here on a weekly basis ordering more than $50 of food each time. We understand prices are sky rocking but this does not look presentable and if they have to raise the prices so someone can get a decent amount of plantains then thats more understandable. And the plantain are also burnt and not tasteful.

Google
Being Peruvian, we definitely set our bar a bit higher and this place always hits. Also a little bias because the owner of this place was apart of the original fiesta that opened up decades ago in Stamford. The original chef from there is also here so this brings me back to my childhood. Come here if you want good Peruvian eats and a good vibe.

Google
Went here for lunch and spent $30.00 for Lomo and passion fruit juice, a bit pricy for lunch but hey that’s the way it is these days. The service was great and food was pretty decent. The sauce and bread were really good.

Yelp
We came here after visiting Stepping Stones Museum, which was just a 5-minute drive away -- and we're so glad we did! The food and service were both excellent, and the portions were incredibly generous. We started with the Ceviche Especial, which was absolutely massive -- easily enough for two people. It came loaded with fresh seafood like mussels, clams, squid, fish, and octopus, all marinated perfectly and topped with plenty of red onions. It also came with some cold boiled potatoes, which added a nice balance to the tangy and refreshing flavors. The anticuchos (grilled beef heart) were another highlight. Even though it's listed as an appetizer, the portion was big enough to be a main. The meat was tender and nicely grilled, and it paired amazingly with their ají verde (spicy green sauce). That sauce was so good we ended up eating way too much of the bread just to keep dipping it in. We also ordered yuca frita (fried yuca), which my son loved -- crispy on the outside and soft inside. My personal favorite was the tallarín verde con bistec. The pasta was tossed in a rich basil-spinach pesto, and the steak was thin, juicy, and cooked just right -- medium rare. It all came together beautifully. We left full and happy. The portions are huge, the flavors were great, the service was warm, and the prices were more than fair for how much food we got. We'll be back next time we visit Stepping Stones.

Yelp
Arrived around 5pm on a Saturday. Was warmly greeted and promptly given the menu by the waitress. She returned shortly thereafter with the roll and pesto sauce and took our order. The food came out fast, but then there were only two tables occupied. The food was awesome. Best papa huancaina ever and Lomo. The bistro was good, and the rice really good. Chicha morada is the best we have ever had. Has a touch of cinnamon that's so good. Polished off a pitcher. When we were done, another family arrived. That's when it took a while to get the bill and pay. In all fairness, she was the only waitress. But you would think the restaurant would have more than one waitress. This is the only reason we gave 4 stars instead of 5. The food is really good, so stop by. Just be prepared to wait a bit depending if they're busy.

Yelp

Yelp
This place is FIREEEEEE . There flavors just make me so happy especially after a hard day of working and not wanting to make dinner lol , good portions for there prices because they aren't the cheapest on the block !!!! There staff can be rude at times but when you grow up in a Spanish household you just get it . Can definitely work in customer service but the vibe in this establishment give me happiness, reminds me of when I was young going out to eat with my family it looks clean and it's definitely worth a try because I feel once you try it you'll become a regular!!!
google avatar

Anastasia G.

Yelp
The ceviche is great here! The service is just slightly slow, but they were extremely busy, so I understand. I wish the tables were a bit bigger. The parking is situation not the best. Overall, amazing food, and they are very accommodating to menu changes.

Yelp
A very simple and happy restaurant with local music playing and interesting cuisine to try if you're interested in Latin American food. However, the food was not to my expectation especially with the rotisserie chicken the white meet was a little too hard and the seasoning was too bland. I'd definitely expect a little better seasoning from my experience with the Peruvian cuisine. The fried rice was good and a very big portion just eat by itself. It's still a good cuisine to try so will come back sometime.

Yelp
I love this place. The food here is absolutely delicious - the lomo is my favorite in Norwalk. The staff is okay, they're nice enough :) I didn't love the Paella, i found it to be a bit bland, but the other food I have gotten here has always been pretty good :) I would recommend it!
google avatar

Eleni O.

Yelp
So I have been here before and it was great but now I have noticed today after getting our check they started adding 15% tip. What a disappointment that they are doing this. Just for that alone it's a one star. We tip well for good food and good service. In this case the server will get only what they put and no more. That is why it's called a gratuity. You get tipped based on service and food at the customers desecration. Tipping is not mandatory. The restaurant looked clean.
google avatar

Claudine R.

Yelp
Not the first time I've had their pork chops and it's always consistently good.. big portions, for $14.49, I never finish it. Service is friendly, one of the best Peruvian restaurants in Norwalk .
google avatar

Cordelia R.

Yelp
Probably the best Peruvian food in Norwalk. My husband has been a handful of times and eaten at the restaurant and always had a great experience, this was my first time trying them. So far we've gotten the lomo saltado and the chaufa de mariscos to go. The lomo was tender and super flavorful, and the chaufa was filled to the brim with seafood and scrumptious. Definitely becoming our go to spot for Peruvian by us

NaNo M.

Yelp
For a Monday the service was totally great I felt like home, the ambience is is family oriented

Bobby D.

Yelp
Why are you giving the tiniest of portions for sauce for your mid Lomo? Might as well come in ketchup packets. They're so stingy about their bread too and just any basic request. Nothing special at all about the food
google avatar

Gary D.

Yelp
Very delicious Peruvian restaurant. Waitress was very attentive and was very nice and took very good care of us the food was amazing looking for a very good Peruvian food this is the place to go in Norwalk.
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
Was in town for one day and decided to eat here. Service was good and so was the food, I can't complain. I just wish Peruvian food was little cheaper. $50 for 2 people lunch is a lot but oh wells.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
This is an Uber eats review. This is my only go-to Peruvian food restaurant for take out. The Chaufa with beef is great. I always get fried bananas and yuka frita. Nothing is greasy or mystery meat. The Aji is also the best I've had. The carne saltado is also very good. A must try for Peruvian food.
google avatar

Greg G.

Yelp
And now I understand why the Lomo Saltado is their famous dish. Superb! Ordered via DoorDash and my order was delivered on time and packaged well. Steak was tender and juicy, rice cooked perfectly, tons of flavor without being overdone. The sides were also superb. Excellent value for the money - portions are huge! Highly recommend this place - can't wait to sample more!
google avatar

Silpa R.

Yelp
The complimentary bread and green sauce were phenomenal. The actual food we ordered was a little bit of a let down after that. Everything tasted fine but nothing I would crave anytime soon. The chicken was very juicy and well cooked but had no seasoning. The fried rice was pretty bland as well. Overall a decent place for an affordable meal. Service was good.

Yelp
Person answering phone barely spoke English and was difficult to understand. Old lady at register was rude and unpleasant.. How about a thank you for your customers?? When checking my order to make sure there was no cilantro like I requested since they screwed up my order the last time I noticed 1 tiny cup of aJi sauce only. No biggie I asked for one more to which the person assisting me had to ask the grumpy old lady to which she refused in an attempt to upsell me their larger containers. I don't like to be nickel and dimed. I will not be back!! You are not the only game in town for lomo... Aji 10 located right around the corner on 10 Wall Street has superior food and better quality steak!

Yelp
I ordered from Mochica after a long day of work, and it truly hit the spot. Their Lomo Saltado (slices of steak with onions and tomato on top of fries and rice) was one of the best I've ever had. The steak was seasoned perfectly- not too salty but super flavorful and delicious! The juices soaked into the fries and rice and was just perfect. I also ordered tostones on the side, and was disappointed that I only had one very small container of the light green sauce to work with. I was staying in a hotel so I didn't have any access to other sauces like I would at home, because of this I had to really stretch out that small container of sauce and because my tostones were a little dry, I mostly used it for them. The portions were huge and I was able to save my leftovers for breakfast (don't judge me! Lol). The lack of sauce is my only complaint though, I am a big condiment person, so unfortunately this costs them a star for me. 4/5

Yelp
Authentic new Peruvian made with care and attention from quality ingredients. The freshness of the herbs, sauces, vegetables & meats are readily evident in both presentation and flavor. Vibrancy shines here! Plesant helpful servers even with limited English. Large menu w traditional offerings, some regional specials etc. We had chicharrone, huevos, Aji, plantains, tostones, pollo, rice, criscollo (marinated onion salad), and avocado. It was obvious everything was made to order (ok, so not the rice but-) hot & delicious! Breakfast is only served Sat & Sun. No actual menu, just understood. Our server was very accommodating (no pork for me just pollo) & was happy to make any adjustments. Servings are large. Bright modern new interior & restrooms. Ample seating for groups. Beer & wine only. Call ahead for BYOB. Looking forward to doing here again soon.

Yelp
The food was tasty overall at Mochica, but too much MSG was used in the dishes. I can totally feel the effect afterward. The mixed seafood soup entree was tasty but there is hardly any shrimp in it (they are also tiny baby shrimp), instead there was too much thin squid rings. My seafood soup entree didn't come with any rice, which I would like to have with the soup.

Dayana D.

Yelp
Bad service. Three separate bad experiences with the servers and the person behind the counter taking orders/answering phones. Plus, last time I ordered there their aji was bitter ... def not going back.
google avatar

Lourdes E.

Yelp
Ordered takeout last night since I want to support local business at this timer. My rotisserie chicken was a great deal- under 10 for 1/2 chicken with rice and a side salad or you can pick 2 sides from a list. Bistec a lo pobre was ok but the side salad was so good. Will definitely return

Efrain D.

Yelp
So we like to order from here but I have noticed a huge discrepancy in the pricing. On the menu the Chaufa de Pollo is 13.95 but when you call in the price is 18. WHY? I'm so annoyed. Please make sure when you order take specific ask for the menu price!

Carmen A.

Yelp
There food is delicious. They are open late. Chalffa is my favorite. The service is fast & good quality.
google avatar

Kelsey W.

Yelp
Update: Ordered for my mom and came in for them to mix up my order then argue with me on what I ordered. As I waited for them to fix my order is when I witnessed the waitress sneeze then proceed to get water for customers. (Grab cups and ice to serve water. She didn't even think to wash her hands ... Sanitization must not be priority at this restaurant.
google avatar

Nilza M.

Yelp
Rotisserie chicken is deliciously seasoned, rice and frijoles on point! Their home made sauce is amazing! One of our favorite spots!
google avatar

Asha C.

Yelp
Best lomo in norwalk - does not COMPARE to anything else. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! Literally so consistent and the Aji sauce is to die for

Diane K.

Yelp
The rudest people EVER! I wouldn't care if they make the best Peruvian food in this country, I will never give this place my business. Funny thing is, as I was speaking with the workers, two other customers actually stopped me and said "yeah.... they're really not nice in here"!
google avatar

Nico D.

Yelp
If you are American don't bother coming to this restaurant. If you want even mediocre service don't bother coming to this restaurant. If you want food brought to your table don't bother coming to this restaurant. Ordered food that never came. Reminded them multiple times. They didn't care. After sitting with no food for 2+ hrs was told would have to pay anyway. Everyone at the table was highly upset. The manager wouldn't even turn their head to look. Walked up to the manager and was flat out ignored. How do they get away with this? Because no one leaves reviews for these criminals. They should be shut down.
google avatar

Javier R.

Yelp
Wow this place is amazing!! I mean the food is just so great and taste amazing. It gets really packed because people will wait for a table to sit. I had the pollo saltiado and it was so good. The prices are really good for the quality of food.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
one word ... WOW ! we stopped her on our way back home from a relatives home in CT. We live in NY and I am off the boat Peruvian and can vouch this restaurant is authentic Peruvian food. Their portions are humongous and the prices are so cheap for the quality you receive. Our server Nicole was a gem she was very accommodating and did not mind my messy infant sitting in for dinner. This restaurant is great, clean and tasty!
google avatar

Truly R.

Yelp
This is one of the best restaurants I've eaten at during this pandemic. The food and service are always great!! This will be a recurring place on our restaurant list!! Thank you Mochica!!
google avatar

Carla P.

Yelp
Awful service, I ordered twice to delivery food. First one the rotisserie chocken was raw and the second one I used Uber eats app and ordered something from their menu/especial and they ended up no tsending the soda. I called the place and someone said to me that they were going to called to let me know but they just didn't, then she suggested to go myself to get the drink because no one was drive to my place. So I told that she still charged for an imcomplete order but never said anything back, only that what I order was a expired offer and they forgot to take it out on the app. The place is convenient because is in town and close but I rather wait longer or to drive myself to get my food somewhere else.
google avatar

Pat A.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Norwalk!! Very friendly service staff, food is always delicious fast, ask for Isabel!
google avatar

Shannon C.

Yelp
I will never go anywhere else for Lomo or Pollo Saltado. This place makes the best version. The chicken is so tender and the flavors are SO good. And don't forget extra Aji sauce. I can drink that stuff! Come here for their Saltado!!!!

Camilo A.

Yelp
Great food great customer service but the owner communicate with the employees unprofessional make them feel really bad I went to pick up my food and I felt bad the way she was talking with the waiters. Other than nothing. I wish I can give 1 for the owner
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Solid 4 stars. I was here for takeout, but the bar in the rear of the restaurant looks very inviting and would be a nice place to have a couple drinks over good food. They claim they have the best lomo saltado. And, man am I a fiend for some dang on lomo saltado and Peruvian food in general ever since having it for the 1st time last year. But this is not the best I've ever had. I had a slight variation, the pollo saltado and it was pretty good. I especially liked how for takeout, they separated the stir fried chicken, veggies and fries into their own container separate from the white rice. That let the flavors keep mingling together without making the rice soggy. There were good flavors throughout but when you cook chicken with high heat in a stir fry you have to be careful to not overcook it, as was the case here. The chicken also could've used a few hours sitting in a marinade because it was pretty plain tasting. But the garlic sauce served on the side is tasty and had a little kick which enhanced the overall flavor of the dish. I'll keep this spot in the rotation and probably would return if in the area.
google avatar

Jesus R.

Yelp
Good place to sit, they cook fast they on top of it, food is good Peruvian food, i would go back if am hungry. There is better Peruvian food around but far so is convenient. Thats why i go. And is not bad is cool taste good.
google avatar

Bernardo D.

Yelp
Every time I go to a new restaurant I always order something I've had before elsewhere for comparison. I ordered Aji de gallina and it was made horribly. The taste was too spicy for the dish and they added too many potatoes. They need to focus on the right proportions and the taste for all customers, not just a select few who enjoy it like this. The rice was at least done right. I'll give them a second chance since I've had friends tell me they like it. Just not any time soon. Who knows, maybe they were having an off day.
google avatar

Carol S.

Yelp
I came here because I wanted peruvian food close to work and not only is their food SO affordable, they make your food fast, comes out hot and fresh, and is SO good. The service is wonderful and my waiter was so so sweet. 100% am coming again and again to this place.
google avatar

Jasmina B.

Yelp
I just ordered lomo saltado and omg it was so good!! I'm so impressed. I ordered through grub hub and it came super fast and the delivery driver was so nice. I will definitely order from here again. Delicious food

Rodrigo P.

Yelp
Called in and order and asked to have my order brought to my car since my toddler was sleeping and did not want to leave him alone in the car. I payed over the phone and when I arrived and called they told me that they could not bring it outside. I walked in the restaurant and there was no one inside. These people don't want to help. They have zero compassion. Won't be eating there again.
google avatar

Lynn D.

Yelp
Loved the food and would order again on the takeout side. Hwever They have an attitude towards Black People, second time there and I had to say "No Ola or Hello". They should be more open and friendly to the people that patronize their establishment

Catherine G.

Yelp
Excellent Peruvian. The spices on the medio pollo are yummy and the lomo is delicious! We will be back!
google avatar

Gene K.

Yelp
Great food choices. Love the classic lomo saltado. Happy that they do UberEATS delivery.
google avatar

Veronica W.

Yelp
I had a takeout, ceviche mixto and pescado a lo macho. Both are incredible delicious! Too bad I did not take photos. Don't be fooled by the fast food restaurant like decor, the food is 5 star!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
Food is okay which is why I'm giving them 3 stars. I can honestly say they serve a good Peruvian brunch in terms of food. Service is by far the worst I've had so far. My family and I usually like to come here but we've gotten attitude from the owner because of coffee refills. We asked our waiter if the refills were free, she said yes and then later when they charged us they went back on their word and said we had to pay. It's a few extra bucks that's fine, but the owner is cheap and the coffee wasn't worth the back and forth confusion. And we always have to stay on top of the waiters when it comes to getting us our checks or taking our orders.
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
Everything Ive ordered has been deliciously appealing. Great food great service so happy to have authentic Peruvian food down the street. The Lomo hmmmmm the pescado ah lo macho yummmmm I can go on nut you have to try for yourself i promise you won't be disappointed!!!!
