"Focusing primarily on Belgian and Japanese designers (Engineered Garments, Dries Van Noten, Comme des Garçons), the long-standing MAC is one of the city's primary destinations for edgier labels. It's enduring power probably has something to do with the owners, a brother-and-sister team with a seemingly bottomless well of design knowledge, which they pass onto their employees and customers. There's a second location in Dogpatch."

Simply the best store for designer menswear in SF. The most attentive sales associates I’ve ever had. He remembers every item I’ve ever purchased from them and understands my personal style. They’re truly the best!

Google
Not sure where the bad reviews come from. I make a point to stop here whenever I'm in town and always have a positive experience. I bought a shirt here and decided to have it hemmed using their in-store service. I received it in the mail back home and wasn't happy with the result. Chris (the owner) was very quick to find a solution and managed to find the scrap fabric and restore some of the length to the shirt. She accomplished this quickly and covered the shipping. Very impressive experience. Beyond that, the staff are always friendly and excited to talk about clothes, local restaurants, or life around San Francisco. It's like visiting your quirky, eccentric aunt's house. It's an off-beat, welcoming energy that makes it enjoyable to shop. Give this store a try if you are interested in fashion.

Great clothing store with men and women's item. Wonderful fabrics and hues. Plus a 70% off sale! What's not to like?

Google
Can’t say enough good about MAC- fantastic superior quality clothing, lovingly curated by Chris & Ben (owners) who have an encyclopedic knowledge of fashion, pop-culture and San Francisco (the world, really). You simply can’t find this anywhere else. I’ve been shopping here for many years and all my favorite pieces came from MAC.

David Hanna

Google
MAC is a fantastic store, which reminds you of the necessity of brick and mortar stores. Their curation brings together minimalist and more eccentric design that allows you to creat a balanced wardrobe. Both of the owners are incredibly kind, and were very helpful in finding the right cut of jeans I was looking for. I’ll definitely be back!

DO. NOT. ORDER. ONLINE. Two years ago I purchased a $75 bag from this company. I wait MONTHS and never received any information regarding my purchase. I still have yet to receive the item, a refund, or even an email back. This company is a scam, at least online it is. Overall this experience has been a waste of my time and my money.

Chris Merriweather

Google
Customer service was horrific! Embarrassing to say the least! I ordered a sweatshirt, money came out of my account the day I ordered. I was sent a confirmation email stating tracking information and time of deliver 7 to 10 business days. After 20 days I still had not got my item, I emailed customer service. They told me something went wrong with my payment, I rechecked my account and money was still gone the same day of purchased. Then they said I can either reorder or they can give me a refund. Why would I have to reorder when you have my money. haha Really?!!! Then I said sure I can reorder being that you have my money and i would have to send more money then I receive fund of my 24 day purchase can I get a discount. I still would not have mind doing business after being lied to and a debacle. I was sent a email saying I will be issued a refund, then I got a email saying my order had been cancelled. So you did receive my order and you took my money but yet you said something went wrong with my payment. I hate being lied to just like most people holding someone money for that long and not contacting them is just unprofessional. I had to contact them to even tell them i had not received the item yet. Just overall embarrassing, I deal with small clothing companies all the time first one that wasn't willing to work with a customer after they screwed up! horrible

Google
Best clothing store in SF, I always try to make it here when I visit. Fun and interesting curation friendly and attentive staff. Free in-house tailoring. A true gem.

Yelp
The first time I walked in the store, I was told it was closing and the tone suggested to never come again. But I'm so glad I did. I've found the staff to be creative and insightful and have found a couple just killer items I'll have in my wardrobe 10 years from now. They carry Dries and comme de garçons and a bunch of beautiful beautiful brands. A treasure of a store.

Yelp
Been shopping here for years. One of a kind. They make shopping fun! Tip: if you see something you really like. You're thinking I can probably find it elsewhere. When it's maybe little cheaper. Not gonna happen. Truly unique clothing that's functional

Yelp
Very happy with the tie I purchased from here for my wedding! A little pricey, but I had my eye on it for a couple weeks and never found one I liked more. The owners and employees were very helpful with comparing colors and fabrics. Thanks!

Yelp
I wanted to like the place. My wife and I recently moved to SF and everyone we spoke with raved about it. I went by myself first. I know my designers, stores, sites etc. I worked in fashion retail for years. They have some cool brands but nothing you can't get somewhere else if you travel or simply know how to surf the net. Now to the customer service. Ben is cool and there's one sales person who is cool. Ben and I chatted for a good 15-20 minutes. I ended up buying a piece just because of how cool he was. HE made me want to come back and bring my wife. You know, good customer service leads to customer creation. A good boutique isn't just about labels it's about the environment you create. Ben made me feel welcome and we ended up chatting about food and vinyl record collecting. He was delightful. My wife went to fashion school, lived in Paris for six years worked in fashion retail and is often stopped on the street and complimented for her sense of style. I brought her in and Chris could not have been any more rude and dismissive if you paid her to. My wife was admiring a coat and rather than say "That's a beautiful piece and you clearly have good taste but sadly that's spoken for. Let me show you something else." Chris walked past and said "That's taken. Sorry" and said it in a way that couldn't have been more rude and condescending. And the piece wasn't on a rack that would make it clear it was being held for anyone. She's just a tired, nasty person who's trying and failing to channel some Anna Wintour/Diana Vreeland energy. Not only is it passé, it's silly. People like her think being a great chef still requires being a boorish clod. It would have been very easy to assume she was being racist but I've been around enough "high fashion" types to know when someone is just pretentious and thinks being snooty and ill-mannered is part of the game. Their merchandising and curating skills are truly lackluster and uninspired. "The Eye Has To Travel". Here it does not! Their customer service is not befitting the vibe they think they're trying to create. Seriously, if you think this place is special you need to get out more. There are shops for discerning people who have taste and their style is a reflection of who they are and there are shops for label hunters who have money to burn and think pretentious silliness is part of the boutique experience. Won't be going back. Ever

Yelp
I wanted to love MAC but although the service was incredibly friendly, the taste level of the current selection appeared, for the most part, to be on the wrong side of the Brummagem blanket. The high quality that comes with this type of price tag seemed to be missing, and beyond one specific rack (very clever avant garde tops) I found most of the items to be uninspiring. I also wasn't pleased at the slightly Keffiyeh-esque appropriatio feel a lot of the shop gave off. It is possible that I came in on an off day as the Spring to Summer season can often be garish and older historical google pictures of the store show the fashion to be tighter and more on point. But of the current collection - if you love Fort Lauderdale coloring and you are far more 60's era Yoko than Susanne Bartsch this will probably be your jam. If not I'd recommend heading down to Ver Unica around the corner.
google avatar

Yelp
Hard to overstate how cool this shop is. Apart from being the best boutique importer of Japanese and European (Dutch, Danish) top designers I know in SF, they're also incredibly friendly and easy-going and suffice it to say they have their in the right place.

Yelp
MAC has been a standard of the best fashion in SF the past 20 years (longer for others - this is reflective of our experience). They have remained in the top as far as quality of clothes offered, service, and people that care more about their customer than making a sale. This business is family run and every person who works for them treats you as part of the family. Cheap prices? Nope - but that is not their strategy. They are the epitome of slow and beautiful fashion prioritizing quality and endurance over temporal "it ness" and bear in mind that many transient fashion moments died in 5 minutes. While they may not have an online presence to compete with big box international firms (Farfetch, NetaPorter) they are not in this business to squeeze designers and make high margins. They are real and have exquisite taste with no pressure sales.

Yelp
M A C is a gem. The items are wearable art. The staff is great at painting the story behind the designers. Chris shares why she picked the pieces of clothing.

Yelp
From the looks of it, I'm in good company. And I have so much to learn. So to date I've kind of been a Nordstrom's fellow. For clothes and cocktails in the cafe before clothes It's convenient and the salespeople and bartenders know my name and it's shopping in a Cheers kind of way. Which is all good. Then one day not long ago I had a little time to kill before meeting a friend for supper and adventured into a little boutique and good grief I must have walked all the way through the store and into the wardrobe and out the other side because ... There's a whole different world out there! I'm not canceling my Nordstrom's card just yet, but I can say with certainty that I'll be peeling the onion that is the smaller stores every chance I get. MAC is one such store. Sadly, I arrived night before last just before closing time but they let me stay and poke around for awhile and I bought some socks with robots on them as a modest show of appreciation. See the other reviews for the designers they feature. I don't know from designers, but the other reviewers are raving so they must be cool. This I can tell you (and I'll update after I have a chance to dig a bit deeper) - quality hangs on these racks. Selections that have clearly been made by somebody who will have to live with the decisions made. A relation of one of the pleasant ladies accommodating my visit makes apparel with the Creative Growth art. You know I love CG. So I'm almost automatically partial to MAC. Loveys, seriously - if you like nice things to wear and you enjoy an environment that's not rush or pressure or too corporate, come here. You can't go upstairs for a tasty libation by Edgar, but you can go around the corner to Absinthe or up the block to Smuggler's Cove and really in a way these are almost better anyway. Right?

Yelp
The moment you walk in the door you know you are in for a different shopping experience. Each piece is a work of art and has exquisite attention to detail. Beautiful material, perfect stitching and amazing colors. My fiancee purchasing a dress shirt and a pair of pants. Both I know will last a lifetime. In addition to the incredible clothing, we were assisted by the nicest sales person, Ben. I am eager to check out their other location in the Dogpatch. By the way they provide complimentary tailoring.

Yelp
Clothes are beautiful but frankly was treated very rudely by Chris who acts as though she doesn't care about the clients at all.I was in the middle of asking her about an item and she walked away.Another time she walked away to take a call and never came back.I have dealt with many retailers and she is truly one of the rudest.Business must be great so her to be so indifferent.Better off going to one of the more reputable stores that carry some of the same brands and want their customers to be happy.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good service and decent selection. You will not find any Celine, Balenciaga, Prada here. It primarily stocks Dries Van Noten, Walter van Beirendonck, Your Legacy, and some other Japanese designers as well as local brands. I felt the store does carry a lot of Dries Van Noten clothes so if you love his products do come check it out. The price is fair for the work put into the pieces.

Yelp
I love Belgian designers. M A C loves Belgian designers. Ergo I love M A C. M A C has a great selection of the usual suspects: Margiela (1, 6, 10, 11, 14, 22), Dries, Elbaz and Ossendrijver for Lanvin, van Beirendonck, Vandevorst. They'll also be carrying Raf Simons for Jil Sander this F/W. It is an absolutely superior boutique. Scott is a model salesperson in every way. He was professional, knowledgeable, friendly (without being too solicitous), and honest in his assessment of what worked and what didn't work. He also dutifully brought items in my size that he felt would suit my tastes, and spent a lot of time explaining the aesthetics of those designers unbeknownst to me. He could talk trailer trash into buying that beaded Dries scarf. Of course, you will need to open your wallet -- wide -- and drop some major coin in order to shop here. But it's oh-so-worth-it for these designs. And with the level of service M A C devotes to each client, you will not mind it one bit. "Mortgage? What's that? Foreclosure is so NOW." In all seriousness, small boutiques like M A C are great places to 'raise the taste level'.

Yelp
Nobody could be bothered to greet us -- seriously, one of the salespeople walked around the corner to see who came in when the little door buzzer rang, saw us, and turned around and walked off... You'd think that we'd just pushed our shopping cart in off the street to load up on $1,000 sweaters. Oh, and if you are looking for Paul Smith, head to Neiman Marcus -- the selection is much better. UPDATE: The store owner sent me a personal message regarding my negative review of M A C and invited me to come back to the store -- I thought that was a nice gesture, and makes up somewhat for the fact that I was ignored when I visited the place a while back.

Yelp
I had a big wad of cash to spend and thought this would the place to do it. I approached the elderly woman who works there, and asked where the Ann Demeulemeester was. She babbled something about Dries . . .and then babbled something I could not make out. Again, I asked which rack or racks had the latest Demeulemeester and she seemed confused. Glancing around the store there was a younger perkier man working there truly helping his customers. I thought about waiting, but they looked like they'd be awhile. I took a cab to Barney's. Score!

Yelp
I usually walk into boutiques, peruse the pretty clothes, find something I like, see the price tag, put my eyeballs back into my head and then wander around trying to figure out if it's worth it. But, I've been surprised time and time again here. There is a great selection of reasonably priced items that usually cause me to question how many things I want instead of which one. Do you want a dress that doesn't walk past you eight times on the street because you all bought it at H&M? Check out M A C.
google avatar

Paulo A.

Yelp
Although I did not find anything to buy, this place impressed me more than some boutiques in this area I've been to. While many clothing retailers in town resemble factory outlet shops where you feel like you're in a cage in the zoo, MAC does their best efforts at producing perfectly elegant and adventurous atomosphere without displaying parvenu taste. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks here than buy at on-line shops just to save 15%.

Yelp
Modern Appealing Clothing is a shop that offers a variety of very high quality garments for men and women. The collection they've assembled is impressive and unique and not to be found elsewhere in the Bay. Being a non suit owning individual who's wedding is fast approaching, the need to find something suitable became an incredibly pressing issue (ooooh, bad puns abound). Being almost completely ignorant about suits made it a stressful pressing issue. We shopped around for a day and a half in San Francisco, asking questions and trying to figure out what's what. After a few fairly pushy salespeople and a pretty wretched experience at Nordstrom, Modern Appealing Clothing came through in a way that can only be described as incredible. Ben, who worked with us during our visit, was extraordinarily helpful and informative above and beyond the call of duty. He was able to give me more information about suits, how they should be made and how they should fit than I was able to find after several weeks of internet research. He was never pushy and seemed almost unconcerned about making a sale, which was welcome and refreshing. Ben listened very carefully to what I was looking for then lead me through a comfortable and productive round of trying on various suits. When we mentioned we weren't ready to pull the trigger and had more places to look, he had no problem whatsoever and proceeded to give me more tips on what to look for and what to avoid. He was fun to work with and made the experience truly enjoyable. I hate shopping for clothes so, for me, this is really saying something. After more failed attempts the next day, we went back to MAC and Ben's friendly, affable, excellent customer service and purchased a fantastic suit. It's been a long time since I felt this good about a purchase and so much of that was the confidence and new found knowledge I was able to put into that purchase. I can't thank Ben and enough for his service and knowledge and opinions. MAC is a wonderful place to buy clothes. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Every article of clothing in M A C is unique and warrants a first and even second look. I think Modern Appealing Clothing has the most avant garde approach to dressing in San Francisco; and that is a seriously good thing! I love that they carry a selection of local designers among some of the kookiest international clothing labels. Everything is interesting in this shop. The store is owned by a brother and sister dynamic duo. Their mother is absolutely a joy to talk with and she will tell you how things look on you in the way that your loving grandmother would. The fact that it is a family run boutique makes it that much more endearing. Prices tend to be on the high side, but that is just the nature of the game when it comes to the plethora of underground labels. The store artwork is super cool to look at. They have told me that the collection of portraits strewn throughout come from every part of the world...people think of them and bring them art; which shows how loyal their clientele is! M A C's selection of men's clothing is also really good...go get 'em guys!
google avatar

Libby T.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about how great this place is! Chris and Ben are consummate clothes aficionados with a customer service style that is familiar and helpful without being overbearing or sales-oriented. My lady and I were in search of a wedding suit, and MAC hooked us up! We spent 2.5 hours in this store, got INCREDIBLE customer service and were awed by their unique sense of quirky, sophisticated style. If you consider yourself a person who has any interest in style at all, run, don't walk to MAC.

Yelp
(Updated 2008 Apr 17) Men's Designers they carry: - Armand Basi (Spain) - Dries Van Noten (Belgium) - Engineered Garments (NYC, and MAC is one of the largest stockists in the US) - Final Home (Japan) - Jil Sander (Germany) - Josh Podoll (SF) - Margiela (Belgium) - Robert Geller (NYC) - Seize Sur Vingt (NYC) - Troglodyte Homunculus (NYC) - John Bartlett - Cubane de Zucca (Japan) They'll tailor your purchases for free and the owners' and staff are really nice and well dressed. Store has wooden floors and smells like Hermes (that's a good thing).
google avatar

Syd V.

Yelp
Hands down, the greatest store in San Francisco. Everything is beautifully laid out with original artwork and displays. The clothing is top notch and incredible. I love that they have lines from all over the world (Dries, Maria Cornejo, and Margiela), as well as lines from SF (Dema and Turk+Taylor). The owners are really sweet and helpful. Always willing to give you info on any of their lines and recommend new restaurants. I always have a great experience here and find some of the most beautiful garments I have EVER seen.
google avatar

Yelp
For those interested in cutting edge Japanese and European fashion, M A C can't be beat. They carry a select few renowned brands, such as Commes des Garcons (main line, Homme Plus, Junya, and SHIRT), Our Legacy, Dries van Noten, and Engineered Garments. Of these, their stock is quite comprehensive each season. They also rotate several other lesser known brands, sourced all over the world. The staff are cool and are impeccably dressed with a deep knowledge of the clothing they sell. The space is open with kitschy and eclectic decor. Overall, this is a place I would recommend anyone with an interest in clothing or style to check out. While the apparel isn't cheap, you can easily find a piece you'll wear for years to come.

Yelp
Modern Appeal Clothing (affectionately referred to as MAC) is the best place to find unique, upscale, and cutting-edge clothing in San Francisco. A wide selection of contemporary Belgian designers--Dries Van Noten, Martin Margiela, and Walter van Beirendonck, among others--accompanies a number of (generally less pricey) local and other American designs. The owners, siblings Ben and Chris Ospital, are completely charming and it is obvious that their store is a labor of love. We San Franciscans are indeed lucky to benefit from their passion.

Yelp
Wow ! MAC just opened another store in Dogpatch in the newly renovated building which is now the new home to Piccino and a great new wine store called DIG. Absolutely beautiful clothing in a beautiful space. It is so nice to see the gracious and friendly owners, Chris & Ben, offering their eye for fashion in such an up and coming neighborhood.
google avatar

Deniz U.

Yelp
MAC has been around for a very long time. With their incredibly curated selection and impeccable / knowledgeable service, it's easy to understand why. The owners have followed their passion and have delivered like no one else. MAC is truly the best of the best!
google avatar

Real S.

Yelp
You would think the wife was the shopper in the family, but every time I walk into this place my wallet lightens by a ton. They have the greatest European designers. When the Mrs. and I dress up and step out, you know I am wearing something I got in this store. Ben and Chris are the best!
google avatar

Dennise d.

Yelp
I think I was there on a good day, or it's just one of the final sale period while MAC still has plenty good stuffs on their rack with huge discount. Their collection, of course, is way better than average selected brand stores. A place packed with Jil Sander, Dries Van Noten, Tsumori Chisato, Raf Simon, AF Vandevorst, Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester, Liberty, Paul Smith AND nice sales reps, how could I resist.? No waaaay. I have to call them to check out what they get for the ss collection as well! P.S. To Fred Segal/Ron Hermen in L.A., would you please send some of your ppl here to learn the accurate manners of customer service?

Mario L.

Yelp
How can you not love this store! And you get what you pay for...Ben and Chris are outstanding and keeping it real in San Francisco. Patrons of fashion and art! "I pray for the day for people who have style get money and for the people who have money get style"
google avatar

Teddy d.

Yelp
Found the most unique t-shirt here.... Great service, excellent collection and all these years I didn't know they carried men's clothing... this is now my new favorite store... That's all folks

Yelp
We had just moved back here in the past year after living in Europe and traveling extensively, including Japan. What pleases me most about M.A.C. is that they carry timeless clothing with good design, and is downright reasonable when you compare them to ANY department of Barney's (including more "reasonably priced casual wear" at CO-OP.) The later has really annoyed me, since they seem fixated on this "little girl," "baby doll" look that is a just a half step up from what you always see Paris Hilton wearing. Or they go very pedestrian and have the most conservative items from Diane von Furstenburg or James Perse. For a long time when I lived in San Francisco, I shopped at Workshop on Union, which carried Zucca (but discontinued it), Incotex (which no one seems to want to carry for women anymore), Guy Rover (ditto on never finding this as a woman anymore.) At last there seems like some hope for the intellectual, working woman, who wants fun styling clothing. The big drawback about M.A.C. is that their selection seems less interesting and more limited in styles for women. I found tons of dress shirts, suits, cool slacks, and tops for my husband, however either you go somewhat pedestrian for the casual wear for women, or you can afford Martin Margiela (for which you can find a larger selection at other stores.)
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
Walking into M A C is like entering a gallery of the most incredibly curated selection of art. Each article of clothing is thoughtfully selected for their eclectic array of clients. I can remember finding pieces by Todd Oldham and Anna Sui next to local favorites HRM and Hank Ford. I am still haunted by my collection of Hush Puppies by John Bartlett that I just had to have. Thank you M A C for your fantastic offerings.
google avatar

Jonathan B.

Yelp
After reading a the reviews here on Yelp, I sought out MAC yesterday just to look at a few of the designers they carry there (Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten...) and found that most of the reviews here were spot on. The people working there were amazingly nice and helpful. Letting me browse, and showing me a few items that were of their own interest without being pushy. And extremely knowledgeable about all the labels they carry. I found the full collection of Engineered Garments there, and was able to find a jacket I was two months ago unable to afford at American Rag. The people there told me about the history of the company, where it is made, and is helping tailor the jacket which is included with the price. They seem to know their stuff very well, and make the shopping experience great. I found my new favorite store, but unfortunately I am not going to be able to afford a large portion of their clothing for a long long time.
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
Great shop and very client-centered staff! Great selection of designers and a much better shopping experience than say Barney's. I really love that they carry a comprehensive selection of Engineered Garments. Kudos to this shop and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
My secret life involves dressing up in fabulous clothes and shoes while my reality is sweats and tennies. I indulge my fantasies by shopping here for fantastical pieces that won't be appreciated by my husband, but by someone with an amazing eye like my imaginary gay best friend who takes me out to show off these masterpieces. Scott is my favorite sales person here. He is so honest it hurts! Owners Chris and Ben have created a cool, non threatening environment to spend money that you don't have in. It makes it so much easier to go into debt when you feel you have some of the best eyes in town complimenting you. I also love they have greeters in the form of two dogs they rescued. Also very important in a great store is good mirrors. The mirrors here are happy mirrors - i.e. you will be happy your cellulite isn't illuminated and your body isn't gigantified (if that is a word).
google avatar

Angel S.

Yelp
MAC is a store for people that love apparel, not merely fashion. There is a lot of care given to the selection and curation of the garments, which range from extremely wearable to avant-garde and from moderately priced to collectors items. I have seen runway items that you simply cannot find in stores, even in New York. This seems to be because the owners have good relationships with the designers, in some cases even collaborating with local designers. This is a place where you can find high-quality, unique pieces that you'll treasure for years. The menswear selection is terrific! And women will find things appropriate for every age. The owners and employees evidently care about apparel and take their job seriously, but not stuffily. You will have the same treatment whether you're looking like a million bucks or ten. And as far as the prices go, if you look at the labels they carry, you'll find the prices very competitive.
google avatar

Rachael D.

Yelp
I've been browsing here for years, sometimes buying little items here and there. They're always nice, they always greet the customers. They never give that "you probably don't have enough money to shop here" vibe. Ever. I am a size 18 (on a good day) and needed a dress. I shopped the regular stores and didn't find anything. I came here thinking that maybe I could find something but not having realistic expectations since my budget was limited and also because of my size. I left with a beautiful Mina Perhonen dress that was a dream!!!! It did have to be altered, but who cares? They suggested a fantastic tailor and now I have a great seamstress and tailor to boot. Couldn't be happier and will save my pennies to shop there. I try to shop local, small, family owned shops and will gladly return. Yay!

Tim B.

Yelp
M A C I have been shopping here since they had a store on Post street! Those two have always been a front runner in bringing new and amazing brands to San Francisco! You can always find a fun piece here! So happy they carry Margiela Heart!!!!

Yelp
MAC has lovely and unique high end Euro and Japanese fashion that is not available anywhere else in San Francisco. The quality and carefully curated collection is what you go for. They have great customer service too. Scott just did a great job for me helping me pick out some new items. Also they have great sales yearly where they clear out their warehouse at huge discounts.

Denise S.

Yelp
The clothing I bought had poor stitching and the fabric pilled. I was not impressed with the experience.

Yelp
Do not order from this website it's a scam and you will not receive your order. It's a SCAM! I ordered on 11/23 and still have not received anything and the email on website will not respond to me. Buyer BEWARE!

Yelp
There I was out on a ramble through Hayes Valley, when what did I see? A most fabulous local. In I went and the selection was "to die". The Comme de Garcons was glorious - head-to-toe floral suits! I applaud the buyer for his or risk taking. There were a few names that you could find at Neimans or Barneys, but overall the take on fashion was quite original. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. There were a few customers in there that were meeting each other for the first time, but giving opinions as though they were old friends. Some might not like this, but I thought it kind of homey. Definitely go if you haven't already.

Yelp
MAC is by far the best place to shop for upscale clothing in SF. I wish I could give them 6 stars. Their selection is great, and the service is like no other. I went in my first time 2 years ago and Scott hooked me up with an amazing Armand Basi suit, which they sent out for tailoring and I was able to pick it up the next day. Since then I've been back plenty of times and am starting to fill my closet with quality clothes that will last for years. If something doesn't fit right, they will tell you, whereas most salespeople will tell you everything looks good just to get a commission. Not at MAC, they want you to look the best you can. Simply the best!

Yelp
M A C is an art gallery in the form of a boutique. A plethora of gorgeous plants greet you upon entering and the space is well displayed and rather casual given the upscale goods on sale here. As a Dries Van Noten acolyte and devotee, they meet my needs with good buys from his collection every season. They also have a good selection of Engineered Garments, another favorite not easy to find in S.F. This store, of course, is really expensive given the brands on the racks, so be careful about just wandering in. But Ben, Scott, and Chris are all really nice and enthusiastic about the clothes and are happy to talk about the Belgians and all the other artists on the racks with you. The Warehouse sale is not to be missed: $30.00 dollar pieces and 70% mark-downs. One downside; a place this special deserves fitting rooms a little more glamorous.

Yelp
I wish I had a chance to even like this place. I was strolling Sunday afternoon with Beau, I needed to pick up a birthday gift for my little bro. I heard this place carried Turk +Taylor which is so perfect for him. I didn't even get a chance to walk in the door. The two shop dogs charged their way to the front door and the owner? is yelling at me NO, NO!!! Don't open the door! He herds them to the back, I make my way in and ask the sales lady if I should tie Beau up outside or if he is OK inside. Not really a biggie. She said he's fine and I ask about T+T. The owner? comes back out and is all in a huff, You really need to ask before bringing your dog! UHHHH, Excuse me! I didn't even get a chance to stick my head in the door and ask. Fine, let me show you the T+T. You know what, No thanks! I said and left. Villains carries it too. *****Side note, Beau was raised as a shop dog and he would never bolt for the door like that.

Yelp
You've heard of "slow food?" MAC is the epicenter of the "slow clothes" movement. The owners, Chris and Ben, are unbelievably knowledgeable about style and design, and will never sell you anything that doesn't suit you. They carry brands that are, for the most part, hard or impossible to find in San Francisco (and in some cases the US), primarily Belgian and Japanese designers. No corporate fashion or flashy labels here; just great people, gorgeous, unique clothes and a warm and welcoming place to experiment with your personal style.

Yelp
This place is way out of my price range, but I stopped in to browse anyway since the reviews were so good. Even though I was dressed like a schmuck, the Ospitals were really friendly. They welcomed me in and took the time to talk about the artist who made the necklace I was looking at. And the guy in the kilt really made my night. It takes guts to dress like that, even in SF. If I was a slightly older, slightly more stylish person with a huge budget, I would love this place. For now I'll just have to keep ogling the merchandise with wishful eyes.

Yelp
I've been to MAC about seven times, each time I end up buying something. The store design is one of the best I've seen since I moved to San Francisco. They sell dries van noten, martin margiela and walter van beirendonck (one of only two stores in the US that stock his line) to name a few. The Sales staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. Simply put, the post progressive fashion boutique in San Francisco.

Yelp
Fabulous range of unique one off pieces for men and women. I thought the mens wear was awesome, some really high quality different pieces with attention to detail and finished beautifully (hence the price!).
