The 13 Best BECs In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"If you don't eat gluten, it can be hard to find a great BEC. It can also be tough to find a gluten-free bagel that's good enough to remind you why bagels are one of our staple food groups—but you can get both of those things at Modern Bread & Bagel. Stop by for a BEC packed with scrambled eggs and cheddar. The bacon is vegan, and it doesn't taste like much, but the big, chewy bagels make up for this. If you want, you can get your whole sandwich vegan." - team infatuation

The 19 Best Bagels In New York City, Ranked - New York - The Infatuation

"These bagels may not taste remarkable at first, but that’s kind of the point. They’re supposed to blend in. Modern Bread and Bagel is entirely gluten free, and their baked goods do a fantastic job of simulating a full-on gluten experience. In order to fully appreciate the dense, chewy bagels with big pockets of air, it helps to understand how truly not-great some gluten-free options can be. But even if you’ve never lived the alt-bagel lifestyle, you can still have a great time eating one of these things. The densely seasoned everything is the correct choice here." - bryan kim, will hartman, willa moore, neha talreja, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah

The Best Upper West Side Bars & Restaurants According To Bridget Everett - New York - The Infatuation

"“Modern Bread and Bagel is newer to the neighborhood. I think it's largely gluten-free, which is not like a thing for me, but they have these sick breakfast sandwiches. I have this one that’s goat cheese with pepper jelly and eggs and I get it on a parmesan roll. If you need a little hug from the inside after you've had a few too many the night before, that's the way to go. And sometimes if I'm really upset with what I've done to myself, I'll get their mushroom patty on an everything bagel. I don't even know what I'm eating but I know it's good. That's my vibe.”" - brennan carley

The Best Gluten-Free Restaurants In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"It can be tough to find gluten-free baked goods that aren't so dry they spin into a pile of dust like Michael Jackson in the Remember the Time video. We can assure you the bagels, breads, and pastries at Modern Bread & Bagel will not do this. This Upper West Side bakery has everything from GF naan and challah to funfetti cupcakes and chocolate babka, and they also serve some good sandwiches." - neha talreja, bryan kim, hannah albertine

Google
We walked down Lexington Ave recently and passed by this bakery/cafe. Right across from Citi Corp building. We noticed lots of traffic in and out so we went in to check it out. Rather small space with no seating. Only takeout service. Lots of great looking goodies to eat. We will come again when we have time to buy something and then find a place to go to sit down and eat. Nice decoration and nice vibe.

Google
Such an incredible location full of the kindest staff. They had so many different options for everyone in the group to have. Both savory and sweet. The best place to go for breakfest. Always make an effort to come back here when I visit.

Google
12/10 service from Jackie and the food is literally incredible! If you’re in the area it’s a MUST STOP! I’m voting for the next location to be in Tampa, FL so I can enjoy all the time!

Google
Do not sleep on this place. Saiya was the most pleasant barista! She remembered us every time and made us feel so welcome. But even more importantly the food and the treats here are fantastic. Been in 3 times and will be coming back tomorrow! The bagel of the month was a delight and they make their own vegan sausage patty and I’m not even vegan but it was perfection.

Google
The BEST gluten-free bagels you’ll find in New York. They also have incredible vegan cream cheese. The bakery itself is amazing, with plenty of gluten-free options. And it’s close enough to Central Park that you can grab one and enjoy it there 👏🏼

Google
So excited Modern Bread & Bagel is finally open! Just tried their Sticky Toffee Cake and it was absolutely delicious. They even gave me an Apple Pie Cinnamon Bun on the house, which was such a nice touch. Definitely will be back for more!

Google
SO good!!!!! Everything tastes amazing and the staff is so great! Nicole helped me today and was so nice, and honestly the entire staff is really great. I've been seeing the 'coming soon' signs on this place for almost a year, I'm so psyched they're finally open. The hype is so true, they make the best gf baked goods anywhere

Google
So, i had high hopes walking in because this place looks very nice. Prices are incredibly high but ok - we say ‘the neighborhood’ causes it. Fine. I got a bagel with scallion cream cheese for 7$ and the bagel was NOT FRESH at all. Huh? You can not be scamming customers with bagels from the day or two before when you charge high prices like that. Definitely NOT RECOMMENDED. Do not go there unless you want to smell like onions + get 2 day old bagels for a ridiculous price. Will try and dispute it from my CC. #nope

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place! Their bagels, donuts, and cookies are hands-down the best I've ever had -- and they're all gluten-free and dairy-free. Every bite tastes like the real deal (actually, better than the real deal). I was in New York for a short trip and ended up going back every single day -- that's how amazing everything was. The texture, flavor, and freshness were out of this world. The staff was warm and welcoming, and the vibe made me want to hang out with a coffee and a dozen bagels. If you're gluten-free, dairy-free, or just someone who loves incredible food, this place is a must-visit. Modern Bagel sets a new standard. Absolute perfection.

Yelp
The short chubby white man working Christmas morning was very VERY rude. Food was mediocre, probably because when he tossed it at me I lost my appetite. But the tots were delish!

Yelp
Pretty disappointed with this place. Firstly, I think $5.95 for a bagel with butter is a ridiculous price point -- that's high for a bagel with cream cheese, which is the same cost -- categorizing butter the same is a mistake. That bagel plus an iced coffee was like $13 ... good lord. Second, the bagel really was really quite bad. It could be the time that I went (11am or so), but the bagel was quite bland, had poor texture and didn't feel fresh despite a toast. I'd compare it to a 2-3 day old bagel texture wise from another bagel shop but way less flavorful - debated throwing it out a few bites in. It could be the lack of gluten in their bagels that threw me off, but if you want a good NY bagel at a normal price point I'd go anywhere else (Ess-a or popup or liberty all close by) On the positive side, staff was nice - hope it's just a bad experience, but won't be trying again.

Yelp
After all the social media hype, I was expecting to love everything, but unfortunately was pretty disappointed with my experience here. I was really looking forward to trying these bagels, but didn't get there until around 4pm, so there wasn't a ton to choose from, which is understandable. My go-to at any bagel establishment is an everything, but they were out so I opted for cinnamon raisin, toasted with strawberry cream cheese. I also grabbed a chocolate zucchini bread. The zucchini bread was dry and had a spongey consistency. The outer edges were hard and the loaf lacked flavor and sweetness. I know it's GF, but I was just expecting more, because I've had many GF baked goods that were moist and delicious, and that you wouldn't know were gluten free. This was not one of them. Onto the bagel. It was decent, but again, not the greatest. I asked for it to be toasted but it was barely. The strawberry cream cheese was excellent, but the way it was put on the bagel was messy. Not evenly distributed and it clumped in the bagel hole and was spilling out everywhere, meanwhile the rest of the bagel hardly had any cream cheese. It was not suitable for walking and eating, although I tried! Ended up tossing the majority of it. Service was meh. Maybe things would have been better early in the morning when items are fresh, but I won't go out of my way to return here. If you are celiac, then it's probably awesome for you because it's a dedicated gluten free facility and everything in the shop is GF. So from a safety standpoint, probably awesome for those who absolutely cannot have wheat. Still, I wasn't a fan.

Yelp
I was so happy I remembered that Modern Bread and Bagel opened their Midtown East location! I was in the office for our holiday party that was happening later on that night so I didn't want to eat anything too heavy, but I knew I wanted to try one of their bagels. (Sweet treat would have to be for another time). I decided to order a toasted everything bagel with tofu cream cheese. I am so glad I ordered because it was literal perfection. I can't wait to go back and try a pastry!

Yelp
We are visiting NYC for the holidays, my wife is gluten-free and she was so excited about Modern Bread and Bagel. They did not disappoint. My wife and I both got breakfast sandwiches on everything bagels and they were delicious. My wife loved all the bakery items she ordered. The staff was very helpful. It is small and nowhere to eat, it is definitely a more of a grab and go place.

Yelp
Really good! Enjoyed the pumpkin bread. Would come again and try more options! Yummy.

Lyndsey A.

Yelp
The best gluten free babka! Their other pastries are delicious as well but the babka will always be my favorite!

Yelp
I love modern bread and bagel. While we sadly got to this one after the kitchen had closed, I snagged a seasonal pumpkin pop tart with chocolate chips that gave me LIFE!! Real pumpkin inside, a fresh, flaky pastry...it's been decades since I've had a pop tart b/c of gluten so to have a gluten free one that was beyond delicious gave me a childlike sense of joy. I also grabbed to of the chocolate rugelach which I get every time. The staff greeted us with a smile and we'll Absolutely back to try some of the kitchen food. It's such a treat to be able to eat from the whole menu because everything's gluten free!

Yelp
Modern bread and bagel must mean served with no customer service and no toast option. Arrived at 3:15pm and bagels would not be sold hot and toasted. For nyc prices that is a joke. Will not return. It's unfortunate because it's a nice location.

Griffin T.

Yelp
Comically underwhelming food and coffee. Their bagel is the worst I've had in recent memory and coffee takes forever as there is one overworked barista making drinks. This is peak corporate slop. Go somewhere else.

Katie K.

Yelp
The fact that this place only has 2.5 stars is insane to me... I went today and was THRILLED. Everything in the store is gluten free. We tried the everything bagel, cinnamon raisin bagel, glazed donut, and cinnamon bun. All delicious!!!!!! No it's not a normal New York bagel... it's gluten free. But for gluten free? DANG it's good. This place deserves more hype.

Yelp
The bagels and service were sensational! The breakfast burrito another big hit! But I loved my wife's BEC the best! Generous portions and great coffee! Can't wait to order delivery to my office!

Austin F.

Yelp
Absolute trash bagels. Hard as a rock and got my bagel type wrong. Don't go here for bagels

Maia K.

Yelp
The bagels are small and dry. They are not doughy - not a New York bagel. They have a generous amount of butter on the bagel but it couldn't fix the bagel itself. The service was fine, but very slow. Only one cashier was working even though there were many behind the desk? The coffee machine seems to be down a lot and the drinks are very small for high prices. The store itself is nice, small and very hot, but nice enough!
