The 20 Best Bagels In New York City, Ranked

"These bagels may not taste remarkable at first, but that’s kind of the point. They’re supposed to blend in. Modern Bread and Bagel is entirely gluten free, and their baked goods do a fantastic job of simulating a full-on gluten experience. In order to fully appreciate the dense, chewy bagels with big pockets of air, it helps to understand how truly not-great some gluten-free options can be. But even if you’ve never lived the alt-bagel lifestyle, you can still have a great time eating one of these things. The densely seasoned everything is the correct choice here." - bryan kim, will hartman, willa moore, neha talreja, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah

Modern Bread and Bagel Review - Upper West Side - New York - The Infatuation

"It can be tough to find gluten-free baked goods that aren't so dry they spin into a pile of dust like Michael Jackson in the Remember the Time video. We can assure you the bagels, breads, and pastries at Modern Bread & Bagel will not do this. This Upper West Side bakery has everything from GF naan to chocolate babka, and they lend their specialty baking skills to the excellent brunch menu at the full-service gluten-free restaurant next door, Thyme & Tonic. I had no idea this spot was gluten-free until after I read the reviews online. That being said, I have a different view of bagel now but I would 100% prefer a regular bagel over this. The bagel was thoroughly seasoned on both sides but the cream cheese was really gooey and melted off. Inside of bagel was dry and I threw out 1/4 of the bagel just because it wasn’t tasty. I was a fan of the chocolate babka though as it was not too sweet and soft. All of their desserts looked super appealing.

This place is divine. Delicious gluten free bagels, cakes, and breaded things that I thought I’d never taste again after being diagnosed. It’s hard to choose a favorite.

**UPDATE REVIEW** because I didn't actually realize the bagels were gluten free (my fault). I tried ordering my classic bacon, egg, and cheese with hash browns but they didn't have most of those ingredients. I personally didn't love the bagel itself, but again I didn't realize it was gluten free. No seating or tables at this location. The bagels were also among the priciest bagels I've ordered in the city.

Google
This is a MUST for coeliacs. The bread they have is incomparable to anything I have ever had! They don’t advertise it everywhere but the four bakeries they have are 100% gluten free. Try the open bagel burrata or the avocado with egg or the farmer bagel is also surprisingly amazing!! Honestly all their bagels were great and my non gf friends said they are as good as normal good bagels. They also have a bahn mi type gluten free sandwich (I didn’t have time to try) and olenty if cakes and doughnuts. So if you are in new york you MUST go. There is always a bit of a wait - and the most north east location also serves pizza which is great (detroit style type I think). So yeah coeliac heaven!! There are some seats in some locations but not much to sit.

Google
Limited options on Bagels, but the ones they have are standard and good enough. Lines move slow-ish on Sunday's, but still effective. Cream cheese selections are amazing. Very high quality bagels. Is our local favorite when we are craving bagels!

Google
I have celiac loved ones and have eaten a lot of GF. I’m not currently abstaining from it but ate here with my Gf. The breads, bagels and desserts taste better than 90% of non GF items I have had. Very impressed. I didn’t try the pizza but it looks good. Will be trying next time. If your loved one has celiac, this is an amazing option.

Google
Went here for the first time today and have to say the experience was disappointing. We ended up waiting 20 minutes for our bagel sandwiches. It seems like the workers forgot about our order because people who ordered after us all got their orders before us. There was no apology for the wait either. Quite disappointed by the customer service. With that said, I can see this being a great place for those who are gluten free but for someone who eats regular bagels all the time, I wouldn’t buy bagels from here again. So maybe not the spot for those who are able to eat gluten. However, their strawberry donut was very good so maybe their pastries are worth while. I still left frustrated due to the poor service and lack of apology for the long wait so I probably will not return back here again.

Google
I love bagels. I love cream cheese. But I rarely (like ever) get a vegan gluten free carrot lox sandwich that aligns with my dietary restrictions. The arugula and tomatoes were great touches. The tofu cream cheese was delicious, and the carrot lox had a surprisingly smoky flavor. I opted for the vegan super seed bagel and will definitely order again. The loaded bagel situation isn’t an every day order for me, BUT I will be getting that bagel simplified in the near future. Love supporting businesses like this!

Yelp
A celiacs dream Cute shop with quick service and order ahead of you so choose. The baked goods are a bonus on top of phenomenal breakfast sandwiches

Yelp
After a nice hot stroll in the area with my little brother and his wife we saw quite a few people inside and thought we should try it. The service wasn't the best, the cashier and the person gathering our items both seem to have a chip on their shoulder. The reason they might have been irked is because I asked what "Babka" was and where did it originate from? Had no idea it was originally from Poland & Ukraine and very popular amongst the Jewish community. All 5 items were really good, not too sweet or heavy. The line inside was unorganized people people ordering pizza, bagels, and pastries (like us). Next time I in NYC I will try a different location of theirs.

Yelp
Yeah I guess not everything needs to be "reinvented" I shouldn't wait 15 minutes for a bagel, it's meant to be convenience food. They don't serve black hot coffee?! They don't have whole grain anything but white flour is somehow healthy?

Yelp
So nice to have a location on the UES now. Everything is gluten free. They have the best everything bagels. I often pick up 1/2 dozen to take to friends and family when traveling. They don't have a vacuum sealer like the UWS location, but they will put your bagels in a brown paper bag to keep fresh. Other notable faves here are the breakfast burrito. This location also has pizza after 11am. I found it tasty. It takes time to get your order here. Ordering ahead online is recently, but I order in person because online didn't have all the options for everything. A solid place. The UWS location is still my fave, but a few modifications and this location will be 5 stars.

Yelp
Modern Bread and Bagel is settling in to their new location on the Upper East Side. The employees are very nice and I definitely loved the Everything Flagel and Jalapeño Cheddar Cream Cheese. I'm thinking it's a 3 and 1/2 Star overall rating but I'm being kind because I really enjoyed the meal. My issue is there's no seating! It looked like a lot of wasted space inside that could have had a counter and stools. The other issue is the June special was an Everything Flagel for $4.03. My receipt looks like I paid more. Very confusing how they tally the bagel and then add more for cream cheese. I will admit the total price is only about 60 cents more than my favorite bagel cafe near home. Due to the total inconvenience of eating a breakfast here I doubt I'll return very soon. I was very lucky that Eli's on 79th and Third Avenue let me sit at their table but it cost $4.36 for my coffee! If I find a park or public space to sit I'll be back. Today I wasn't prepared and I was HANGRY!! Oh Yeah, the pastries look delicious!!

Yelp
Everything is gluten-free, what a haven for me! My only regret is that I'd taken more stuff with me. Their lox sandwiches were savory and their bagels tasted excellent and as chewy and soft as I remember gluten-filled ones tasting. Their selection is honestly so wide, I only wish they'd open a location closer to my home. Here's to gluten-free chains expanding!

Yelp
Quick drive from the Bronx to and from. I was able to buy my delicious gluten free dairy free sesame seed bagels from the nice workers! The bagels taste like regular bagels and I wish they had a Bronx location so I could buy from them every other day lol. I'm happy to be able to enjoy bagels/bread again as someone who's allergic to dairy and has bad reactions to wheat. Thank you and I'll be back every week.

Yelp
I had previously written about how disorganized this location was and how difficult it was to pick up orders, but they've recently created a pickup area so you don't have to stand in line to get your online orders. I think things are improving. If you need to be gluten free like I do, check out these bagels, they're the best gf option by far.

Katherine B.

Yelp
I got a few baked goods today and those with celiac this is an amazing spot to try out! I didn't have a bagel due to the reviews but their crumb cake and pop tarts are fantastic. I definitely will be coming back.

Yelp
This place was horrible : I am going inside the store around 4:40 in the afternoon to buy muffin and bagel the store staff tell us they were close but eventually they were not and they close at 8pm according to googles . When the store staff sitting in the chair chit chatting and playing on their cellphone while denied to make our food. I am going to plan to sue this bakery for racial discrimination; feel free to recommend any lawyer

Yelp
This review is about service only: Be prepared to wait and not be attended to by inattentive staff on their phones and chatting with each other about their social plans.

Yelp
So I've been three times now and it's a bit hit and miss. I think they're going to improve and get better but I'm a bit taken aback by a company that has a decent amount of locations and still getting their bearings. So the first time I went I got the mushroom breakfast sandwich. They cut the bagel so awfully that there was a tiny sliver for the top and massive piece for the bottom. It was so messy and with no top piece the paper they wrapped it in was completely stuck to the breakfast sandwich and I had to spend about ten minutes picking by paper off before I could try and eat it with a for and knife. To eat a breakfast bagel with a fork and knife is insane. They also originally gave me the wrong order and it took a super long time for a breakfast bagel. The flavor was great and the woman working was lovely, she came from the Santa Monica location and knew a lot about the company and super friendly and attentive. Second time I got like a vegan chocolate dessert thing and it was super hard and not great. Third time I got the mushroom truffle pizza and it was amazing. I'll keep trying and hoping they iron out their issues. Overall the whole staff is amazing, just looking for a bit more consistency and speed in their food.

Yelp
Just opened on the UES which is a blessing for the dietary needs for gluten free eaters. Sometimes you can't even tell the difference and it's so rewarding to finally not feel sick when eating something with regular flour anymore. Love their bagels and also wide array of desserts.

Cheryl A.

Yelp
Terrible pizza. Awful Bundt cake. Was extremely dry & hard. You can tell the food has been sitting there all day... also, employees are no help until they feel like it. They were pretty much on their phones paying no mind to customers until they were good & ready.

Katrina P.

Yelp
The staff was super nice. I got a sesame bagel with strawberry cream cheese. The bagel it self was not good , pretty tasteless and also weirdly tasted doughy. Also it was over $7...so probably wouldn't really recommend.

Yelp
Modern bagels have very helpful employees, but their food is awful. My everything bagel was fresh but burnt, flaky, and tasteless. There was barely enough cream cheese on it and just a few slices of salmon. In an area with plenty of other great choices, they won't get another cent from me.

Ellen S.

Yelp
Great GF bagel sandwiches, a large variety. Next time I would ask for a double toasting. Other yummy pastries available.

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Honestly this might have been the worst bagel I've ever had. It tasted so bad, was weirdly caked on the inside and burnt a bit in the outside (everything bagel). They don't have whole wheat bagels. I got scallion cream cheese and it tasted almost mayonnaise like. Ew. Even my Bundt cake pastry was dry and tasted processed. I would not recommend this place at all. I've had better at grocery stores. Especially with the price they charge for nasty food.

Debra B.

Yelp
The same great gluten free bagels, salads, varieties of cream cheese as well as the fantastic cookies and pastries as the UWS, only now there's no bus ride across town. And there's pizza too!

Keegan L.

Yelp
Fantastic bagels! Friendly service. Excited to have Modern in the neighborhood! Can't believe they have gluten free pizza by the slice.
