I have been to Modern Love exactly once, many years ago, at their old location, so it was about time we checked out the (not so) new location! And what better opportunity than Omaha Restaurant Week!
They had a $20 three-course prix fixe menu that included an appetizer, a main, and a dessert. They also had their normal menu available if you wanted that additionally or instead of the prix fixe.
My husband and I made reservations about an hour before we came on a Friday evening and while there was a steady crowd the whole evening, we probably could have come without reservations and been seated quickly. I started with a Honee Cardamom gimlet and my husband got the pomegranate Moscow mule and despite both of us going with the prix fixe menu, we also decided to share an order of the poutine.
My gimlet was tasty with all of the promised flavors, but it was a little too sweet. A little tart or sour note would have helped to bring the drink together. My husband enjoyed his mule a lot!
The poutine was HUGE, but so so good. The fries and gravy were excellent. The only critiques I have is that it needed a bit more salt overall and the vegan feta, if they're going to call it that, needs to have a bit more of the salty, tangy, brine taste.
The prix fixe started with an Arancini Carbonara, which was my favorite part of the dinner! It was one big arancini that was incredibly crispy on the outside, very creamy on the inside, had a great rich flavor that was complemented very nicely with the overnight pesto. This needs to be added to the permanent menu ASAP!
Next came the spaghetti and meatballs. The pasta in pomodoro was very yummy! I would down this any day easy! But the meatballs were a little too smoky for my personal taste. Objectively they were good, but too meaty for me.
We ended with the cherry amaretti bread pudding for dessert and it was truly the perfect ending! The mascarpone that was served on top was a perfect pairing. I'm not a huge cherry fan, but I could eat multiple servings of this in one go and be very happy!
We also asked for hot sauce and were served a small dish of their house-made sauce. It was mildly spicy for me, but the flavor was very good and it went nicely with all of the savory foods, so I was happy. We probably still would have gotten it, but it would have been nice to know that the hot sauce is $1 for each little dish you get.
The staff were friendly throughout and the service was nicely paced. Overall, it was a very enjoyable meal and I'll definitely come back, but as someone who has never eaten meat before and does not crave that flavor, I do wish that Modern Love would focus on a few dishes that weren't "meat alternatives," but just good food that also happened to be vegan.
