Monsoon – Taipei - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"The room with bare concrete, exposed bricks and reclaimed furniture adjoins a terrace generously adorned by potted plants. Having spent 20 years with Western cuisine, the chef revisits his roots and tells captivating culinary stories with refined vegan neo-Hakkanese cooking. All ingredients are sourced from Miaoli County where he hails from. The dish ‘Rebirth’, for example, is smoked cabbage wrap with a mashed potato and salted mustard greens filling." - Michelin Inspector

This was our 2nd time as this branch. We had reserved a table about a week ago but there was no need. The main level set of tables were all occupied so they opened up the upstairs level for us. Equally well decorated with their toilet theming. Kids played with the ball pit in the bathtub and the poo Pillows. Food was decent but smal servings. The deserts were very cute but on the pricey side approx $150-$200 for the poo pudding and poo ice cream.

Our elementary school aged daughter insisted that we come here when we visited Taipei. I thought this was going to be super gimmicky and not that good. I was pleasantly surprised that the food was tasty, fresh, and fast. While I hope this is the last time I eat fried chicken out of a toilet and drink fruit tea out of a urinal, I couldn’t think of a better place to do it. Daughter was thrilled and re-energized after her smoothie and pasta, and I was happy that she was happy!

I really loved this place! The food was good, I really appreciate the great artwork and a friendly staff. Not to mention, the atmosphere is just hilarious! 😆 Definitely check this place out for the experience if you're ever in Taipei 👌

Visited the shilin branch on a Sunday at opening time. No wait. Wasn't crowded but saw some tables reserved. Kids love the ball pit. Many toilet themed decor and plushie for photo ops. Food wise, everyone is required to order one item from the menu. We ordered the chicken chop curry rice, the chicken pasta in cream sauce and 2 sides, the taiwanese fried chicken popcorn and the fries. Turns out the fries came with hash browns, wedges as well! Taste was actually good, exceeded my expectations for typical themed cafe food. Sauces and condiments were separate. Mains came with salad and appetizer on the side as well. All food is served in some toilet themed ware. You can also buy toilet themed souvenirs. Cash only for payment. Iced water free too. Visit if you have kids!

This outlet is slightly different concept compared to to the other outlet. It is cute and fun to experience. The food is reasonably sized and priced. Service is good since it was not crowded when we were there. Definitely a place to go with kids.

In case you’re wondering why the reviews are so good, it’s because they give you a free gift (pictured) if you leave a 5-star review. Although the decorations are cute and the theme is creative, the food and prices leave much to be desired. The curry was probably from a packet and not very tasty. And they have a minimum number of items which means they don’t even honor their own combo set deal as advertised on their menu if you have more than 1 person. And the poop ice cream was even sold out. Basically a scam, avoid at all costs.

Surprisingly the food is not bad! Haven't been to this outlet before and was very pleased with the decoration. Go around 3pm; no one at all. Can Instagram all you want!

Yelp
This restaurant popped up on the map when we were looking at something else. Intrigued we took a closer look and decided it would be a hoot to try it. And it was. The toilet/bathroom theme was seen in every aspect including the serving dishes. Urinals for some of the drinks and mini toilets for the hotpots. Food was decent - the tomato based hot pot had better flavor than the broth pots IMO. Service was reasonably fast. When we arrived we were only ones there but more folks came while we ate.

Yelp
Service was good. The squid was cooked to My preference. The serving size was ok. Jasmine tea's hot and for dessert, ice cream was ok

Yelp
My wife took my 2 boys, 7 and 12, who were excited to experience this crap. Arrived at 8:40 pm and were denied service even though restaurant closes at 9:30. No where in advertisement does this stipulate that seating stops at 8:30. To top it off when asked if we could take a picture in the lobby she was denied. Customer service is poop.

Yelp
Odd yet cute concept and interior decor. Ice cream tasted like poopoo no pun intended. Shaved ice was 85% ice with no flavor. Mangoes were not fresh. Thank god we didn't try any of the food.

Yelp
Well.... It very pretty inside. The chairs were toliet seats, pretty one though haha. This place is more for photos and is a tourist trap. Nothing really special other than that. The food is not as good as other themed resturant in Taipei. Each meal comes with a drink and ice cream. I don't know if it was me but........ Everything tasted so watered down. The bill came out to be 60.00 USD for 3 people. That pretty pricey a meal in Taipei, Taiwan. If you need photos to post for Instagram or any other social media this is the place for you. If you're a foodie... Skip it.

Yelp
Came here with a party of six at 4pm day after Chinese New Year as we wanted to check it out and share some food after a huge lunch we had. There were no other customers (not even one!) but they made everyone order at least one thing, but they were missing so many things from the menu (only allowing combo orders and the bigger orders). We wanted to share food but they made three people leave even though there was no other people in the restaurant as three people didn't want to order their own food (we wanted to share)! Horrible service with very very mediocre food. My curry chicken wasn't that great and it's definitely more for the decoration and cuteness of it.

Yelp
Came here with my cousin, and her bf earlier this year, the food here was good. I got the fried chicken stuffed with cheese, and ham. Pretty good, would have tried the curry but I was already pretty full from eating a lot of street food. This place is pretty random, but the fact that it's in ximending is pretty convenient. My cousin and her boyfriend have lived in Taiwan all their lives, and they don't often go to these types of restaurants, because these are considered tourist attractions. But I still liked the dish I ordered, my cousin got a side of their mozzarella sticks, and in the end we got some chocolate ice cream that was in a toilet bowl. For a rainy day I would suggest you check this place out if you want something warm to eat. I'm not sure how much the total of my dish was, since my cousin's boyfriend paid, and since I didn't know that they had english menus, all I did was point at what I wanted, and then I got it. This place has free wifi! Which was good for me since I hadn't had a chance to get my sim card installed until after the first 7 days in Taiwan.

Yelp
Maybe the hype is what is all there is and I am late to the party but honestly it is good for photo op for the weird things you may encounter in Taiwan but not worth a sit down for desserts, snacks, or a quick meal. I would avoid at all costs. Save yourself the entertainment. You may as well save your money for food in the dingiest night market. Do pay a visit for a photo op though.

Yelp
Naturally, the concept drew us in. Was funny and quirky, but wow the food was absolutely horrible. Was so bad we were confused and thought maybe there was a mistake. But no mistake, the food is as advertised, deserving to be in the toilet.

Yelp
You have to be really open minded to be able to accept what you see in this place. Everything from the design, utensils and furniture is related to the bathroom. You will be sitting on a toilet with the lid down of course !! Eating out of mini toilet bowls and drinking out out a hospital urine flask. For some orders the food comes in the shape of poop!! The food isn't all that great but the point is to experience this insane concept. It's something new for sure, great fun to go to with a bunch of friends and snap lots of silly photos. Don't go there for the food, go for the excitement!

Richard B.

Yelp
The food was really not bad. And the prices are reasonable too. Why only 3 stars? The waiter was as lame as could be. I mean come on! You go to this restaurant for FUN. Not the food, albeit not bad at all. But the first reason to go is for fun. And the waiter, whose also the greeter didn't smile, spoke softly and didn't set a fun tone. You need someone to be fun and quirky. This restaurant will soon go out of business because they have the wrong people working there. This guy should be behind a computer silently working on programming. Not being the greeter at a fun establishment. I guess this is the fault of the manager and owner. Shame! You have a great concept. Get the right people now.

Yelp
Better than I was expecting, most the staff speaks English, and they have english menus as well. The food is great the theme is entertaining and priced reasonably. Great experience and food!

Adrienne L.

Yelp
Mediocre food honestly; though bathroom theme is good for kicks. The Shilin location was very empty. Employees are not super welcoming but they do stay out of your business. The seafood pasta was a bit undercooked and the entire experience was a bit underwhelming. Definitely go check it out, but there's no reason for a second time back.
