Meet the LA County Public Defender Who Doubles as a Dumpling Master | Eater LA

"Known as a pop-up celebrated for birria tacos, Moderno Cocina teamed with Lin for the Las Perlas event; owner Denice Mendez praised Lin’s dedication and precision—saying she “never knew it was that much work and how much precision to make just one little dumpling” and that Lin “pours her heart into it.”" - Andrew Watman

This was my first visit, and it definitely won't be my last. I contemplated a while about choosing to eat here. I loved my food! The chips were crisp, and the salsa piping hot; yummy! My plate choice was served prompt and tasted delightful. The service was superb; attentive waitress and manager or male lead on duty. When guests started to pour in, the manager(or owner?)on duty did not hesitate to assist. He made my experience that much more delightful. He displayed hospitality and friendly service!

What a cute place! I love their vibrant decor and use of sugar skulls on the cute menu and in the actual restaurant. The space itself has many seating options, including a patio in the back. They also have a semi-separate room with a long table to accommodate larger groups. I thought this was a walk-up and order type place, but to my surprise, it was a sit down, server brings chips, and takes your order type place. I was very happy with this. I'm not always fond of the walk-up and order type places. The service was great! We arrived around 5:15 PM, so it wasn't too crowded yet. The bar is right near the table seating, so it can get a little loud. There was a larger group in the bar area this night, so we had a little bit of a hard time hearing each other at our table. Our server brought us chips and salsa. The chips are a medium thin and the reddish-brown salsa is served warm. Love that! We had a couple cocktails and enjoyed a delicious quesadilla. Our server was very helpful in making our requests for a combination chicken and beef quesadilla. It was the perfect appetizer to split since we weren't terribly hungry. It was not only filling, but very tasty! I usually like beef better than chicken at Mexican restaurants, but their chicken was fantastic! I liked the beef too, but I was very surprised how much I liked the chicken too. Very tender and seasoned well. Drink prices are decent. They make a pretty good Ranch Water. Food prices are good too. Our bill was fairly small because we split our meal. We will definitely return! The flare is fun, the parking is convenient plus plentiful, the restrooms were spotless, the service is great, the food is terrific, and the energy is good. Really enjoyed our time!

My first time to eat there. Felt pressured to decide my order while waiting in line. My preference is to review menu while seated. When I saw everyone getting chips and salsa, I asked for some as well. I was lectured about placing the order prior to paying in the line to place the order. Claimed she would bring it to us anyway. Never arrived before finishing our meal. The fish tacos would have been super bland without the pico, salsa and lime. I think there may have been a bad winter in South America and that may have caused a lime shortage. I had to calculate and measure my lime usage between 2 fish tacos with only 1 thin wedge. Maybe I am not regimented enough or urban enough to understand. My apologies for being less urban than required ahead of time. Vote Red.

Google
Great spot! We had the chicken & poblano quesabirria taco special, a cheeseburger & the chicken tostadas. Everything was great! House margaritas are legit. Efficient service and nice decor! The jalapeno salsa has great flavor and packs a punch. We returned the next day for their breakfast tacos. They're the bomb! We will def be back.

Google
Food was Mild to Nothing seasoned. Yes big Tex mex. No flavor menu is decent but nothing to brag about. I say drive few miles more for better Food.

Diana L.

Google
Sorry folks, service wasn't up to standard. I try to stay as positive as I can. Do better. The table we wanted to sit at was poorly cleaned. We asked for It to be finished cleaning the lady sprayed the chair and left a dirty plate on the table and never picked It up. (Yes I said what I said) I got a simple burger that was bland. My daughter had to send back her food because she got RAW onions instead of grilled. She needed to add an order and was ignored for a moment. Just lazy service. Oh and the appetizer came After the meal. Boo not up to expectations.

Google
The best breakfast tacos ever and we love stopping in to grab some delicious Mexican food. The beef fajita tacos always amazing. Super nice people and great atmosphere

Google
A vendor brought this to us at the office and I had to try it out in person! The menu is awesome, and I've already planned my next three orders when I come back. Really good queso!

Laura B.

Yelp
Walked in in a Sunday mid morning, ordered 11 breakfast tacos. All freshly made! Delicious and the green sauce was spicy good and the red salsa was a mild cooldown after the green! Definitely will go back again!

Yelp
I ordered chicken fajitas for $19 while having lunch there recently. The meal came with grilled chicken strips, rice, guac, pico, charro beans and sour cream served on a non sizzling plate with some corn tortillas on the side. Taste wise this meal was ok but it did not stand out to me. Kind of ho hum. The restaurant interior is attractive and perhaps this restaurant is better than a 3 star visit but that was my experience here. Our table service was good. I would consider returning.

Yelp
Ordered online to go. Beware, they charge a $1.00 fee for online ordering. Huh? Ordered breakfast tacos, they were pretty good. Nothing spectacular but got the job done. The salsa was good. Can't comment on ambiance but seems fun enough during lunch. They have full breakfast and am intrigued by the waffle. Will be back, but won't be ordering online.
google avatar

Catherine L.

Yelp
I'll start off by saying that I am intrigued enough to come back even if I give my first time rating 3 stars. You walk in and order straight at the counter where they have the menus printed out and there's a huge chalkboard of their most popular items on it. The cashiers were attentive enough but not exactly enthusiastic or attentive when I mentioned it was my first time. The food came out after 8-10 minutes? Not bad. My husband's Enhilada plate came out VERY HOT and super fresh but mine...just looked and tasted like it did not. I had the fajita steak added to my Migas and it was very tough to cut through but also a steak knife would've been nice (I only had a regular dinner/butter knife). It also came out Medium (and Rare in some parts) temperature which I enjoy but it was a little concerning since they didn't ask for my meat temp and I didn't notice if it was written anywhere.. The shredded cheese on my eggs were unnecessary and the eggs were a little bland. All in all I felt like my food was very underwhelming and I had to rush to eat before it got too cold. Although my Migas weren't great, I would still come back to try other things for lunch time.

Yelp
We stopped in here on a Saturday morning for breakfast tacos. I had been here years ago and forgot why I didn't return sooner. Good looking restaurant. Beautiful bar area. Friendly staff. It's the food! It was all very bland. It's like they don't have any peppers or spices in the kitchen. This is supposed to be Tex-Mex! Burn our mouths!!!! Even the salsa was ridiculously mild. Maybe it's the clientele's tastes in this area that they're trying to cater to? I don't know. But, I have noticed some of my favorite Houston restaurants have become bland in recent years. I figured it's the new people moving in. Most of the wild people are moving out, really old, or dead. Gone are the giant jars of vodka filled with peppers and people drinking shots. Much less, jackass shots (where bravery is proved by pouring a shot in the eyeball). Anyways, I digress. My point is that people have changed over the years. Mediocrity seems to be pulse of today's society. Maybe the good days are gone just like the old Merle Haggard song, Are the Good Times Really Over (I Wish a Buck Was Still Silver)? If you're a boring, bland individual, you will love this place. I'll probably go back and try the margarita with sangria swirl. Make it a double!

Yelp
I don't know why my total came out to be $20.97. The breakfast taco plate was $9.99 plus upgrade of fajita meat additional .50 each. Plus tax is less than $13.somebody explain to me. There was a language barrier so I didn't ask. I also thought she said $12 something till I looked at my receipt after and saw $20. What the heck Anyway, tacos were bland. The eggs needed seasoning. Potato and beans were good Edit: I called back hoping I get somebody that could help. The lady said she changed it to $11.

Yelp
My husband and I went there and ordered their Houston Restaurant Weeks menu. It is a great price for 2 people, but you get what you pay for. The tortilla soup was very good and our waiter was great! However, the rice is bland, the boracho beans are smoky, and the cheese enchiladas have a beef gravy sauce instead of a traditional red chili sauce. The place looks nice but it is evident from the restrooms that this place never gets any deep cleaning! We might have returned just for the tortilla soup but after seeing the restroom, it made me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen. I'm sorry to say that we will not return here and I would not recommend it.

Yelp
A little salt would go a long way. I've enjoyed Moderno Tacos +Tex-Mex since it opened but have not eaten there in a long while. Dropped in to grab a couple breakfast tacos on the way to work this morning. Friendly counter service and a reasonable wait time for food. Unfortunately, both the chorizo/egg and potato/egg breakfast tacos were surprisingly BLAND. The red salsa? Meh. The green salsa? Will blow out your taste buds. Not inspired to return to try the delicious-looking chicken-poblano quesabirria featured as a new menu item.
google avatar

Yelp
Ahí Tuna Salad was delicious and the dressing was light and clean. I'll be sure to come back and get my taco fix - they looked amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
Moderno is very good & not badly priced. The Customer service was great. The tacos were delicious & the avocados were fresh. My only gripe is the rice and beans were bland. Add more seasoning to the recipe. Other than that, a taco spot everyone should try. Add more seasoning to the recipe. Other than that, a taco spot everyone should try.

Yelp
Nice place to have lunch during the workday Order at the counter, and no chips and salsa I ordered the cheese enchiladas, they really emphasize the cheese, not as much enchilada sauce Service was average

Bill G.

Yelp
Love their breakfast tacos! Super tasty and super filling. If I could eat theme every day I would. Always fast service / short lines in the mornings.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
I stopped for the first time for breakfast tacos at Moderno. The place is bright and festive in ambiance. I was warmly greeted by staff and handed a breakfast menu. As I read aloud the lady gave a recommendation on the carne guisada. I ordered a bean & cheese taco and a carne guisada (no egg) taco. The food came out pretty quick. The tortillas had a nice, light crisp. There was no skimping on the beans & cheese as seen when it squeezed out the back end. This taco was very filling! For lunch I had the CG taco and was equally as pleased. The taco was very flavorful. To my surprise my first bite was a thick but soft slice of carrot which I loved! It didn't taste like carrot; the rich spice is what stood out. I passed on using the salsa as it was meh and would not have added anything. I did use the HOT green sauce sparingly with the guisada. I'll definitely return for breakfast as well as dinner to test out more of the menu and the Rita's!
google avatar

Sebastian C.

Yelp
The food is good asked for medium rare for well done, not to much flavor and my fork and spoon had water stains. Other than that it's good. Service is friendly. Place seems a bit crowded tables to close.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Perfectly done egg breakfast tacos... super yummy refried beans and skillet potatoes. fresh pico and salsas. I'm so glad I found this place. The menu has some great items. Chilaquiles! I can't wait to try! And tortilla soup, etc. Very generous portions.
google avatar

Kei V.

Yelp
Excellent tacos and service! Eat here weekly and came in for happy hour, can't remember the prices but we all enjoyed beer, shots, frozen and on the rocks and margaritas.

Juliet S.

Yelp
Pretty girls, great food, smiles abound! Best breakfast tacos in town! Great start to a great weekend!

Yelp
Oddly enough I have never heard of this place. My cousin lives four minutes down the road and he is barely telling me about this place. Not sure why this is never been on our radar. I really like the decoration on the inside. It kind of reminds me of the restaurant ambriza in louetta. They did a good job decorating the store. Management and the wait staff needs to pay attention to the clients. My cousin and I were waving our hands to try to get their attention because we had a question about the brisket taco we ordered and they simply would not even make contact. They were so busy talking among some cells that they were not watching the floor. That was very frustrating a disheartening to see. The food was pretty decent. It wasn't the best it was the greatest very middle of the road but impact a lot of flavor. I got two ground beef tacos and one brisket taco. The brisket taco was pretty decent. If I ever go back there again I will have to try the Fajita Al Carbon.

Ashu T.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch - Counter service Extremely clean and well lit Service was excellent throughout the meal Ordered the burger and fries ($14 before tip) - fresh veggies, toasted and buttered bun and extremely flavorful and thick patty that was cooked just right. Will definitely be a regular for lunch when working in the area.
google avatar

Kayla L.

Yelp
Great service. Went for the breakfast tacos. Only complaint is there is maybe two whole eggs for one taco - one taco is more than enough for this gal!

Grant H.

Yelp
I want to commend Roberto and Gloria(morning crew) for their incredible service, attention to detail and the order always being ready on time and of incredible quality. I call on Physician clinics and have very picky offices regarding Mexican. There is not one physician clinic worker that did not rave about their breakfast. Simply one of the top 5 bkfst taco places in all of Houston. Roberto and Gloria make my life easy with their talents and hard work. Grant Hixson

Yelp
Great happy hour! I had their quesadilla and guacamole along with a margarita. Everything was top-notch.
google avatar

Yelp
Tucked into an unassuming strip center right off the Beltway, this place has absolutely fantastic cuisine. Deep, yet supple, flavors that are complex and comfortable at the same time. The best Huevos Rancheros I have ever tried, going back 40+ years. Found it on Yelp, couldn't be more impressed. Thank You!
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
I was working across the street when hunger striked. The place looked appealing from across the street. You order at the counter. Colorful skulls adorn the whole place. The limeade is not too sweet. The staff was pleasant. I noticed a semi private room where you can gather friends. They have happy hour until 6:30 p.m. I took a star off because the tortillas for my quesadilla were tough and greasy. They were abundant and I will definitely return. I hope to have better luck with the tortillas next time.

Karina R.

Yelp
I love their street tacos and the enchiladas. My family and I visit often. I enjoy the ambience and Mexican decor. Service is always great! Music in Spanish will fit better with the whole restaurant theme.

Brenan Y.

Yelp
Way overpriced, the food wasn't even good and it was cold. The interior is nice, but what is the point if the food isn't good. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Ed S.

Yelp
Friends suggested we try Modernos for a change of pace from our usual stops. We were seated promptly, and drinks were served right away. One of our group ordered a margarita. On the small side and just "ok". Nothing special. The chips were in the thicker side, almost baked-like. Not as heavy as they looked. The salsa was excellent. Perfect consistency, warm with just the right amount of spice. Our dinner was served promptly and very warm to Hot. Around the table were enchiladas that looked very good. My fajitas nortena were packed with cubed beef and chicken and some grilled onion. The seasoning is what threw me. Cilantro in fajitas? I was expecting strips of chicken & beef with traditional seasoning. Not bad. Just not what I expected. The tortillas were soft with just a bit of firmness to hold their shape. Is Modena my new favorite? Nope. But for a change of pace it's pretty good. And it just may make you love your favorite Tex-Mex joint a little more.
google avatar

Audrey T.

Yelp
I work nearby so it's really convenient. Breakfast tacos are full and delicious. Chicken quesadilla is so good and bigger than the average. Service is always great and food comes out quick and fresh.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Great Food Joint, super clean great music playing and the Street Tacos were stupid GOOD.... Service was excellent friendly staff as well. They serve alcohol, beer, wine and fresh made margaritas. Kid friendly place and I can imagine at peak hours this place could be hopping !! Tacos were fresh and Mexican rice on point... Ordered the guacamole which was fresh and tasty and they brought a warm ( temp) salsa which was terrific. Make time to come by and pick something off menu you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Adrienne C.

Yelp
This is my first time coming here, and of course I discover this place as I'm moving away. It was a little empty but I was okay with that, as I was dining alone. I like how they give you water in a togo cup. The margarita was okay. The chips and salsa were good. The birria tacos are new to their menu, and I love birria so I was torn. I end up getting that. It was so rich, crispy, cheesy and delicious. The green sauce was spicy but I love it.
google avatar

Elle M.

Yelp
Horrible..the only thing worth getting here is their margaritas, they're hood and strong. You'll need it though to choke down their god awful rubber chicken breast. We live within walking distance and would come here for couple years, have drinks and food, walk home. The food got so bad we quit coming, it's just awful in every aspect. Would maaaaaybe still order breakfast tacos.
google avatar

Vanesa V.

Yelp
Came in for a quick bite and ordered the chicken fajita tacos. For the price I was expecting to get something better. The food was meh. Would have gotten better and cheaper tacos from a taco truck. Only good thing was that the salsa comes out super hot.

Tatiyana B.

Yelp
The service was awful!!! i was completely disappointed and dissatisfied. The waiter seated us and never really came back to check on us like he did other customers. We were completely ignored while trying to get their attention. Even while placing the order we were treated like we were slow or broke. This was the first time I ever really felt discriminated against. The food looks good but is absolutely tasteless. The atmosphere seemed like a good place to eat until we realized we weren't really welcome. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!

Vanessa G.

Yelp
Absolutely loveeee the breakfast tacos here!!! Staff is so friendly and remember their regulars :) Have nothing but good things to say about their breakfast, hands down the best
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
I come here once in awhile since is quite proximal to where I work. I usually stick with the taco dishes and across the board, the food here is meh, ok at best, compared to many of the other Tex Mex locatioins in Houston.
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
Been at least three times so far and all were great experiences. Breakfast tacos are yummy. Servers are friendly.
google avatar

Hal S.

Yelp
We tried this place for the first time today, based on good things we've heard. The food was excellent. My wife had the basic crispy tacos, and couldn't stop raving about how fresh everything was. The lettuce and tomatoes were obviously just prepared this morning. Recommended.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
The first time I visited this supposed family friendly restaurant, the management was cursing loud in the dining area. That was a few years ago. I gave this place another chance and another. Today, they served up raw chicken in the quesadillas and raw chicken in my 13 year old daughter's chicken tortilla soup (which had no tortillas). My burger? I spit it out. We requested that it not be chatted because they had Eva bad habit of burning their burgers. Medium, please. Not charred please. Instead it was burnt like it came right out of the depths of hell, dried up beyond belief. What sin did this meat patty commit? From hell, to my mouth, to the trash. How can I trust these guys anymore? If you like going to Vegas and playing craps, this might be the place for you.
google avatar

Kristina W.

Yelp
Really, really yummy! Great service- mega win finding this place before we went to the escape game!
google avatar

Rebecca K.

Yelp
We're back at Moderno tonight because my husband was craving the Terlingua enchiladas . He's says they never disappoint. My usual, the cheese enchiladas, are also delish. We tried the beef fajita nachos also this time and highly recommend. This cute little restaurant is a hidden gem!
google avatar

Luna Q.

Yelp
Disappointed. I ordered the Migas plate and had no Migas, only egg. Flavor is ok. Just wish I got what I was craving. They also gave me a Migas taco at first. So must be that they don't know what they have on the menu. Second order and didn't get it right. Update: what I mean there's no Migas I mean there is no tortilla on my eggs. Migas has tortillas in the eggs with all the other vegetables. If you zoom in my photo you will not see any tortillas. I waited an hour for my breakfast, because I had a taco delivered instead of plate.
google avatar

Nicholas L.

Yelp
I thought the decor and food and service were all pretty top-notch here. I got DF tacos which were pretty great--I did think the rice was kinda bland but overall I was happy with my order. Parking is plentiful since it's in a pretty long shopping center. The salsa that you get for free with the tortilla chips was excellent!
google avatar

Glasson R.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome Tex-Mex. Across the board everything it should be and everything you would expect. Terlingua enchiladas, brisket tacos, too much to list. I could order almost everything on the menu. And just maybe the best tortilla soup in the State of Texas.

Mark A.

Yelp
We decided to have our family get together here and it was fantastic. Carlos, the manager, helped plan the party and everything was perfect. We had appetizers on the patio and dinner in the party room. Loved the ceviche and fresh guacamole and the margaritas were off the chain. Special thanks to Eduardo and Jo for their excellent service. They were on top of everything! Everyone ordered off the menu and everyone agreed that the food was top notch. Really fresh flavors and an excellent menu. We will definitely make this place a regular stop!

Patrick M.

Yelp
be aware of shady business practices regarding this establishment. got to go order wherein hidden fee layered in. does not mention on menu or anywhere that such a fee exists.

Rob J.

Yelp
We have tried to like this restaurant for several years. First-off, the food is good. Perhaps even "really good", but the poor service and customer experience does not make-up for it. Food orders are regularly incorrect, and when you bring it to the attention of the wait staff and even management; they are openly hostile and confrontational. My wife got a chicken salad last year and the chicken was raw. Not undercooked . . . raw. When we returned to have the order corrected, we were told that it was cooked fine. The outside of the meat was pink. Why argue when you can see it? From reading other reviews, it seems as if undercooked chicken is common theme. Never, ever, trust that a to-go order is correct. Unpack everything and verify. On several occasions, we have found that we are missing items after getting home, resulting in a return trip to the restaurant. This is only 15 minutes each way, but that means 1 hour of drive time to get a single correct food order. Not good. We are going to have to stop recommending this restaurant to friends and family. It's a shame, since the food was darn good. Perhaps the owners should take a closer look at who they hire to run their pride and joy for them.

Dillon L.

Yelp
Great place for our family Christmas party! Their back room and outside area was very accommodating. The waitstaff was very attentive and kept up with the hectics of moving around. Carlos, the manager, made sure we were all satisfied. The food was amazing and very affordable for our large group!

Yelp
This place opened up in the old space that Prince's Hamburgers used to occupy. Really clever interior with reclaimed wood on the walls, spanish tiles, metal chairs, booths, chalkboard wall by the order counter & a nice bar displaying a nice selection of tequila. I usually go to Moderno for breakfast so I can say their spinach & egg tacos are delicious without the sogginess associated with sauteed spinach. I've also had the migas & the huevos rancheros. Both outstanding but I think I like the huevos rancheros a wee bit better. I had mine with sunny side up eggs smothered in their rancheros sauce which is chock full of poblano pepper strips, onions & tomatoes. Hmmm, hm! Both plates come with a side of refried beans (which are very yummy) and potatoes (nicely browned & crispy). Their garlicky salsa compliments their breakfast tacos & ceviche which I had on a recent visit during the lunch hour. Nice serving of shrimp, fish, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos & cilantro. Basic but good & tangy, nice consistency to the fish. Convenient to the office & home (H & I have been frequenting this place on the weekend for breakfast), this place is definitely on our rotation of places to go.
