Restaurant Moeders - Review - Jordaan - Amsterdam - The Infatuation

"If you’re in town with your mom, you’re going to want to get a reservation at Moeders. The place is a shrine to mothers (complete with all kinds of photos of them on the walls) and a necessary intro to traditional Dutch comfort food, like stampot, the Netherlands’ national dish. Theirs features a mound of potatoes mashed with other vegetables like sauerkraut or kale, then ringed by sausage, bacon, and a meatball, before a swimming pool of gravy is finally poured into the center. You’ll want to wait for a chilly day to eat this (you won’t be waiting long), and if your mom happens to be with you on her birthday or on Mother’s Day, you might even get something special for the table." - Paolo Española

The vibe of the place is the most memorable, with hundreds of photos of mothers adorning the walls. I was in awe the moment I entered the restaurant. Of course the food was very good as well, I was happy to try the authentic Dutch dishes - the stewed beef was tender and fragrant; soups were delicious too… a bit filling as serving is generous, so if you’re a small eater, you may want to share one soup between two to save appetite for the main course and dessert. We didn’t make a reservation, thinking that on a Tuesday 6pm, we should be able to get a table. Boy were we wrong as this place is popular! We were lucky to get a table for two but better to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

This is a VERY popular restaurant, so make reservations! We ate here on our first night in Amsterdam, and it was a very accessible intro to Dutch food. We had the hotchpotch/stampot, pea soup (didn't really taste like peas? more like lentils tbh), and duck leg. Everything was tasty and the service was excellent. Love the mismatched tableware! And the unique decor!

Wow, I just stumbled upon this place by accident looking for some traditional Danish cuisine and I don’t think it gets any better than Moeders. You need a reservation, but luckily, I was just by myself so they squeezed me into a table. I went with one of their house specialties. I believe it was called the hopscotch which was comprised of a wurst, a Danish style meatball and some bacon with the centerpiece of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut with a dollop of gravy in the center. I started off with the asparagus soup which was in season and both dishes were hearty and delectable and if I remember correctly, you could even have the mashed potatoes mixed with other things like spinach, etc.. Do not miss this stop in Amsterdam. If you’re visiting for the first time, I would’ve gone back probably a couple of more times but my other hotel was way across town.

Google
This place is amazing, the vibe is unmatched with the full “classic mother’s food” theme, very good decorated. The food per se is nice, there are options for you to try several of the classic dishes in a buffet-esque way, which I apprecciate a lot since I only had one chance to try the food here. Of course, the service is also top, very kind and helpful people, with waiters that speak all languages for ease of communication

Google
The best choice if you want to try the authentic Dutch cuisine. The Stamppot with smoked sausage, bacon and meatball is the best in Amsterdam, the suddervlees (slow cooked beef stew) is the most delicious dish, the duck leg with vegetables was perfectly cooked and the desserts are very good, above all the apple cake and the caramelized pear. They also have a good choice of special beers.

Google
We got the traditional Dutch food which reminded me of my own country's food. We had great service overall. The space is small so it's a little tight to get around. The thing I disliked the most was their chairs. They were the most uncomfortable chairs and my back was hurting that I couldn't wait to leave for that reason. Please consider new chairs!

Google
Come with a reservation if you want to be seated indoors. Food portion was huge for Asians like us so it was worth the price. You will definitely leave the place full. We had the soup of the day, mushroom soup which was served piping hot and delicious. Spare rib portion was enormous, it could probably feed 2 pax. The beef Stew was equally look and well seasoned. Only down side is that it's a small space so do be prepared to seat closely with other patrons.

Google
Traditional Dutch food in a very cozy place! Service was nice but they forgot my order so I waited for more than 1.5h… they were apologetic about it. Regardless, food was great.

Yelp
We were told this place has some great food so we gave it a try. Jonas, our server, sat us outside which worked as the temperature started to get cooler. The ambiance is very cosy with a feel of being at mother's home. Such a cute place

Yelp
A cozy and comfortable place for dinner where the walls are covered with photos of mothers and grandmothers and the food is served on mismatched grandma china. It was a little bit tricky to get there as there was a LOT of sidewalk and street construction going on outside all over the place. Once in, we ordered a couple of German beers and then shared a pork shnitzel dinner with red cabbage and potatoes and a rib dinner with cole slaw and potatoes and there was WAY more food than we could eat!! It's all around filling and super satisfying, food our Dutch mother would have made us had we been Dutch and grown up in the Netherlands.

Yelp
Make your reservation early for this popular restaurant that celebrates all things "Mother". Excellent locally sourced food with generous portions (just like you would hope from Mom).

Yelp
Such a unique and cosy spot that you must visit. A reservation is the best way to go, the place gets packed and walk-ins aren't guaranteed a table. I came here for the traditional Dutch food and that's what I got. One thing about the Nederlanders, they love carbs. For starters I had the pea soup that is served with a side of bread. My main course was the stamppot which was one of my favorite dishes in Amsterdam. Portions are huge as I couldn't finish my dish, great to share. The staff is friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Ambiance: vintage Dutch, Oma's house Service: Friendly home style Food: Homestyle cooking Mama's ribs were true to Mama. Seemed like we had her leftovers from earlier in the week. At least they were tender off the bone. Cole slaw and potatoes were delicious Oma style. Meatball and wieners were tasty. Just enjoyably simple. Apple Pie and ice cream were the best part of the meal. Overall, I recommend Moeders to try some traditional Dutch dishes.

Yelp
Super good! As a first time in Amsterdam I had ok food the first day, but wised up the second. Taking a recommendation Moeder's was superb!!! The service is amazing everyone so attentive even though it was packed. The interior is decorated with pictures of mothers from all over! I had to have the stammpot traditional Dutch cuisine- delicious And of course stroopwaffel ice cream . So so good Highly recommend

Yelp
We came here while visiting Amsterdam and loved it!! Not only is the decor amazing, the food was also excellent. There are thousands of pictures of mothers hanging on the wall which was very cool to see. The service was very quick. We tried a lot of things on the menu and everything was really delicious. I highly recommend for people visiting as they serve many traditional dutch foods!

Yelp
Walking home today I see a queue of tourists waiting outside for a table inside. They are all staring at their phones probably wondering why they are spending their precious time in Amsterdam at this place. The food here is average, at best. Ambience is unique with all the mother photos on the walls but please spend your time visiting other real authentic Dutch restaurants. It would be different if Moeders made good food, but it's one of the few places we actually put down our forks and didn't finish eating.

Yelp
Very popular restaurant for traditional Dutch food. They are very busy and booked for weeks but you might be able to get a table depending on the time you go. Super friendly and efficient staff. They restaurant is full of photos all over the walls of peoples mothers from many decades. Very unique decor. I tried the traditional Stam pot. They have other things too including daily specials.

Yelp
Reservations strongly recommended. They book up early however some lucky walk-ins are lucky if there is a cancellation. Follow the link on the Yelp profile page. Service and hospitality = A Food = B+ Location = A (one block from tram stop) Ambience = A Dutch food.

Yelp
Are you looking for traditional Dutch food?! Then you're in luck! This place is called "Mothers" and the whole place has pictures on the walls of mothers. There is literally no space uncovered. The people working are very chill so if you're looking for a quick service place this may not be for you but it's still a really good experience. The prices are definitely not bad especially for what you get! We tried the meal for 2 which was perfect since we wanted a bite of it all. The beef stew dishes were my favorite. It also came with a couple different potatoes, cabbage, and apple sauce. For dessert, we got the apple pie and I could've ordered a second one... it was THAT good.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to have come early in the night and they fit me in before their next reservation (which was super nice as other places in Amsterdam wouldn't sit a party of one). My waitress was kind and the owner was extremely sweet. It's super cramped and also had a lot of tourists. The food was pretty good. I had the beef carpaccio (not pictured) but should have gotten the vegetable soup. The stamp it was extremely hot (temperature wise) and on the saltier side. I recommend stopping by to try authentic Dutch food and try to make a reservation ahead! Tons of people got turned away but some were told to come back later/try their luck again in 20 ish minutes.

Yelp
Moeders is a mother-themed restaurant that serves authentic Dutch cuisine in Amsterdam. It's famous for its homely atmosphere and a wall filled with photos of mothers. The staff makes you feel like family, and it's a great place to experience the taste of Dutch comfort food in a friendly setting What we had: Stamppot // Hotchpotch (€17): mashed potatoes with vegetables served with a sausage of butcher Louman, a meatball & bacon. Fish from the Market (€21.5): Salmon with Hollandaise Sauce. Hollandse Rijsttafel // Dutch Ricedish (€21): a combo of all the Dutch specialties, including granny's stewed beef, Dolly's hachée (beef stew with onions), hotchpotch, boiled potatoes, red cabbage, apple sauce, bacon, sausage & gravy. Appeltaart Van Moeke // Mommy's Apple Pie (€7.5): Homemade & with vanilla ice-cream. It was our first time having Dutch food and WE LOVED EVERYTHING! They all tasted so good. The Rijsttafel, especially, gave us a unique experience because we got to do a lot of mix and match with those little dishes. The sweet and fruity taste of the apple sauce impressed me the most. It went well with everything. I just couldn't have enough of it. Bonus: You can give them a photo of your mother and they will hang it on the wall! They also collect all kinds of plates from customers who give them as gifts so feel free to contribute.

Yelp
Moeders "mothers" is an eclectic family ran authentic Dutch restaurants that gives honor to mothers. They are an amazing tribute and memorial to mothers, thousands of pictures honoring Moms it was beautiful. All the dishes are mismatched and it's beautiful we were told when they opened people brought in items from their collection. The food is delicious and hand made, so prepare for a long wait. This is very common when traveling to Europe, so enjoy not having to rush around shouting out orders or waiting for the bill as we often do in the states. Thank you for a delightful dinner.

Yelp
Excellent food, friendly wait staff. Neighborhood cafe. The street was under construction, and outdoor seating was a bit rough and cramped, but absolutely worth it for the hachee stew we enjoyed there.

Yelp
My friends and I came here to try authentic Dutch food. We weren't sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised by how savory and yummy it was. We got the meal that allowed you to try many different dishes, which was perfect since we'd never had Dutch food and were not sure where to start. We also got Mom's ribs and the croquettes. You could taste the Indonesian influence, including the beef stew which strongly resembled Rendang, an Indonesian staple--minus the coconut milk and other spices. In addition, the croquettes seemed to have a curry-flavored filling. The two stews we had were pretty similar, but both were very tender. It also came with a variety of different potatoes--all similar to each other. The cabbage was made with apple and very yummy. You could also tell the applesauce was freshly made and it went really well with the rest of the savory elements. The ribs were super tender and very flavorful. Overall, it was a satisfying and hearty meal. You can't go wrong with meat and potatoes

Yelp
Amazing experience when in NL. Authentic Dutch food with friendly and efficient service. All the dishes looked amazing and we were both blown away by quality of food. Reasonable pricing as well in a nice area near the Jordaan. Five stars!!

Becky G.

Yelp
We went specifically for the sampler of Dutch foods and were quite disappointed. Based on this sampling, Dutch eat nothing but potatoes; bland, stringy beef in watery sauce; and cabbage. I'm glad we had Dutch food in other settings so we know they actually do use spices.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful time. Food was great and the owner and staff treated us like family. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
This place is one of the most beloved place by the locals. They specialize in traditional Dutch cuisine. Which is a mixture of Thai, Indonesia food and potatoes. To be honest, service is not the Dutch's strong suite. Then can do better. They are always polite and with a friendly face. That would suffice anywhere, but coming from a place in where the service is all, I founded them wanting a little bit in this department. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was very casual and cozy. The place is very warm and has certain friendliness that screams to you, like a restaurant that has been around since your childhood. But if you arrive without a reservation they will send you away. The place is very small so they cannot accommodate large parties with ease (maximum 9). The food is very tasty and unpretentious. Like if you were eating at a friends house. They do not offer table services like bread or sauces, but they do give you wet towels to clean your hands. The Rijsttafel is their own interpretation of the famous dish. Very well executed and tasty. However to much potatoes for my taste. The deserts were just ok, certainly there are better places for Dutch apple pie. In summary, this place is a must whenever you visit Amsterdam. Just be sure to make a reservation beforehand.

Yelp
A Mamá themed restaurant with excellent Dutch cuisine! We went based on the reviews and it didn't disappoint!

Yelp
This place was recommended by the canal cruise guide. He said to make sure to get reservations or you won't be able to get in. And he was right! We were lucky because we met a couple who had placed 2 reservations for table of 2 and table of 4 but their friends couldn't make it so gave us their 2 months ahead reservation! So my husband had to be called George for that night lol. I am not familiar with Dutch food and really wanted to try authentic Dutch food. And this one was bang on. We did the sampler and did not know what to expect. There were 5 ( very hungry) of us, so asked for 5 of the sampler meal but the lady said order 4 of those and should be good to feed 5 hungry humans lol. We got our order fast, the meal was yummy and would definitely recommend it to someone who haven't had authentic Dutch food like myself. It's a small mom and pop diner and the space is limited. It's like eating at someone home.

Yelp
Such a great family spot in Amsterdam for some very traditional Dutch food! This place is definitely a must if you're visiting Amsterdam. Moeders = Mothers. Walking in, you'll notice that there's a lot of picture of families and specially a mother in it! That was awesome to see them celebrate mothers in that way and their recipes. You'd usually want some reservations if you're planning to dine during rush hour, otherwise, they should be able to accommodate if you're with a small party. Everyone working there is super sweet, just like you're at home. To start my meal, I ordered the pea soup. I've had pea soup before and it's usually a hit or miss, but this place is great! There's smoked sausages in the soup and that makes all the difference. We followed with one of their sampler dishes so we can try out different traditional dishes which included stewed beef, sausage, potatoes, mashed carrots, and apple sauce. We shared this among two guys and it was plenty for a third person. We didn't have room for dessert, but we heard their pies were amazing! Giving this place 5 stars because I couldn't find anything wrong.

Yelp
Delicious "home cooked meal". I definitely suggest the hoLLanDse rijsttafeL / DutCh riCeDish. It comes with 3 meats (2 beef and a sausage), 3 potato dishes, red cabbage, and applesauce. From food to service everything feels like home and makes you feel warm inside. We did see quite a few people turned away because they didn't have a reservation. We lucked out and just walked in.

Yelp
This was the best meal of my life. I think about it almost everyday & bring it up in every conversation I can. The food was outstanding but I attribute a good chunk of it to the cozy ambiance. It felt like an intimate dinner party with your besties. If I could live here I would. We got the hotchpotch & the seasonal special of lamb & cous cous. It was stunning I hope I get to go again in this life!!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Extremely slow service (dinner took over 2 hours for 3 people). Took a long time to follow up on everything. Food was pretty good but not really worth waiting that long for everything. Portions were kinda small. Left not super full and kind of disappointed.

Yelp
Really delicious Dutch food in a super cute tiny restaurant decorated by lots of pictures of mothers. Service was great. Food was super hot. I had the veggie curry and my husband had the hotch potch.

Yelp
Pure traditional Dutch food. Great atmosphere and wonderful service. Get there early if you do not have a reservation

Barbara B.

Yelp
The service is impeccable. The menu varied but many traditional Dutch dishes. There were 3 in our party and each of us loved the food we were served. As it was my birthday, I was treated to a surprise ice cream with a firework candle. The atmosphere is lovely with pictures of mothers lining the walls. These were provided by clientele who have dined in the past.

Yelp
My favorite place we ate in Amsterdam! This place has a very comfortable and locally inspired environment and the food tasted amazing and home cooked. I also had the beer Brewed By Women and it was fabulous! The service was friendly and fast and the prices were reasonable as well. I would definitely reccomend to anyone visiting the area!

Estela R.

Yelp
First time trying Dutch food. The food and the whole experience was amazing m. We ordered the Dutch sampler. It was a great way to try different dishes. The food was comfort food at it's best. The sausage was outstanding! Best sausage i have ever had anywhere. The server was welcoming. The restaurant back story was charming. Moeders is a must try if traveling to Amsterdam. I also recommend you make reservations in advance.
google avatar

Morris D.

Yelp
THE BEST SAUSAGE I've EVER HAD! Very juicy sausage and perfectly cooked! The ribs were also very good. The service was great and the servers were very friendly and was making jokes. It is definitely a homey restaurant. All the images are customer's pictures of their mothers and it is in every single wall.
google avatar

Yelp
Saw this on Yelp and decided to walk 20 mins from our hotel to give it a try (without reservation!). My daughter and I really like the interior decor, very homey and the food was amazing! We ordered the sampler for two after ready all the reviews. Wanting to try local dish but don't know what to order. This is highly recommended if you are visiting Amsterdam! But reservation recommended as we saw many people being turned away...else go early like 5pm. Best service too!

Yelp
Fun spot for some authentic Dutch food. Small dining area with pictures everywhere. We had the catfish special and vegi curry, both were unique and delicious!

Yelp
Moeders is an absolute must when in Amsterdam for its traditional Dutch food and photos of all the moms on the walls. No, really. You can even bring a pic of your mom to post on the wall, including the bathroom walls...(kindddaaa creepy). While researching for where to eat during our Amsterdam trip, Moeders was on nearly every list for a traditional Dutch meal. Therefore, we made reservations, which I highly recommend doing so because the place was packed when we visited on a Monday. In fact, when we walked in, one of the employees asked us if we made reservations. Lots of tourists come here to try Dutch food for the first time; and when we visited - I even saw a couple who was on my flight from Seattle here! Small world. To really get the best of everything my friends and I ordered the Dutch Ricedish, which is recommended for a group. The Dutch Ricedish comes with Granny's Beef Stew, Dolly's Hachee (beef stew with onions), hotchpotch (mashed potatoes with sauerkraut), boiled potatoes, red cabbage, applesauce, bacon, and sausage links. It's 20 euros per person and is worth trying at least once. The meal was a good portion for the three of us and we all left feeling full, since much of the food was hearty. Of the two stews, I liked Dolly's Hachee better than Granny's. The hachee had a really nice onion flavor and the stew had a gravy-like sauce to it, which went very well with the hotchpotch. I do wish there had been more veggies versus so many potato options, but if this is what a traditional Dutch meal calls for then I can't hate. Everything was very tasty! Friendly service, Dutch beers available and an experience to be had for when you're in Amsterdam. Moeders is a definite dinner spot if you're a tourist. Just remember to make reservations online and have your confirmation e-mailed to you. I'm glad my friends and I were able to check it out and go Dutch!

Yelp
While planning my holiday to Amsterdam for my birthday it was suggested by my brother to visit this restaurant. He visited previously and stated that the food was good but he was disappointed he didn't get a chance to get our mom's photo up on the wall. He had stumbled upon the place and didn't know that they posted your mother's picture on the wall if you brought it to them. Hence the name "Moeders" which means "Mothers" in Dutch. I printed out and framed our mother's photo and brought it all the way from the United States to get her up on that wall because that's the least you can do for the woman who gave birth to you, and for a restaurant to acknowledge that is such a sweet gesture. The place was packed but we went for lunch so we were luckily able to snag a spot. I read a bunch of reviews prior and planned accordingly because we could not get a dinner reservation since I booked my flights so late. Everything in there is mismatched and kind of makes me feel like I'm at grandma's house or a thrift shop (but not in a bad way). Space is really tight. Service is lackluster but not terrible. It was nice to try traditional Dutch home comfort food while in the Netherlands and it recommended for a visit. Spare ribs were very good! We went out of our way to go there and didn't regret it. If we ever return I would go back to try and find my mom's photo.

Yelp
It truly feels like you're dining inside someone's home. It's cozy and you'll find yourself gazing at the walls covered in photos of real mothers. Of our mini feast, I mostly ate simple white potatoes and stewed beef. There was plenty of bacon in each spoonful of green pea soup. Good though I probably wouldn't come out of my way to dine here again. It was more a must on my list to have a homestyle Dutch dinner while in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Moeders offers up classic, hearty Dutch cuisine in a space not much larger than your average living room. The menu covers some tried and true classics (pea soup, a herring salad, beef stew), with some creative touches (a pumpkin soup of the day) Word of advice: get here early! There are fewer than a dozen tables and long waits are inevitable. I came by at 630 on a Sunday evening and had a 30m wait ahead of me. Others weren't so lucky, with a wait of an hour or longer. The food, though, is worth the effort. I went with that pumpkin soup and a plate of stamppot (a mix of mashed potatoes and either spinach or sauerkraut, surrounded by bacon, a meatball, and a piece of smoked seasoned sausage called rookwurst). A basket of fresh bread with a tangy mayo sauce came out, which paired well with the soup. Rich and velvety, it was like a bisque. The stamppot was delicious: a huge mound of it had a well of gravy in the center. The meats were tasty, in particular the well seasoned rookwurst. For as big a plate of food as this was, it paled in comparison to the Dutch rijstafel ordered at a neighboring table: a little bit of everything on the menu with sides of fries, cabbage, and more. If you don't mind the wait, Moeders makes for a great meal, especially on a grey, rainy evening. The decor is eye catching as well: just about every square foot of the walls are covered with photos of random mother's, collected by staff and donated by diners

Yelp
Lots of locals - which is always a good sign. Menu is short but has enough choices. We had pretty much everything on the menu between the 6 of us and everything was delicious! The best service we had while in Amsterdam. A super friendly and fun team took care of us and at the end of the night they even offered everyone in the place a free drink.

Yelp
I had one of the best and heartiest meals of my life at this place. It's a beautiful fast little restaurant whose walls are covered in framed pictures of moeders aka mother's to us Americans. We had a server who came over and Immediately gave us attitude in a very apparent joking manner. She was sweet enough to bring out gluten free bread for my sister's husband who has Celiac disease. She then left and another young short-haired blonde girl came over and took our order. We did the sample meal thing which is $20 a person and it was a ridiculous amount of food. The gal joked with us non stop and another server came by too who was just as friendly. She looked of African decent and was super sweet as well. They both said we were a fun table and clearly gave us a lot of attention as we had a nice bottle of wine with our meal. The food was alllllll good, both beefs, the potatoes, everything was just fantastic. I don't even like pea soup and it was really good. After the meal they brought another bottle of something similar to jaegermister which they said was better than that but from a few islands away. Anyway, they poured shots for all of us and took them along as well! Our bill came and for $20 a person, 3 pea soup, plus wine and shots it was $98 eueos clearly we we're not charged for everything and they told us not to worry about it so we tipped them pretty darn well. They provided excellent service, conversation, food, and a memorable meal!

Yelp
Sat outside but the view was just too wonderful. The meal was a lot for 2 persons but fed 3 with leftovers. We wanted German food and it didn't disappoint- I am still dreaming of the sauerkraut potato mash. Sigh.

Yelp
THEY ARE NOW BACK OPEN and they are no longer doing their takeout menu. Everyone we spoke to was fluent in English, and there was no communication issues for us. When things start picking up, would recommend making reservations, even if it's only on the way there. If you're taking your mom there for a birthday, tell them when you make that reservation because they have a surprise for moms' birthdays. One of their big selling points is that the place is covered literally wall to wall with contributed photos of moms and they're still accepting pictures. So heads up if you want to print a photo ahead of time to bring in. It's very cozy inside and part of that is due to it just not being a very large establishment. A comfortable sized but it gets a lot of traffic. There's not really a space for people to wait in inside, so you might have to wait outside. Maybe on the outside table overlooking the canal like we did. The terrace wasn't open anymore at that point, but at least we had that one place to wait at until we were called in. If you're looking for a place that serves traditional Dutch fare like we were, this is a place that serves what could be considered "traditional", homemade, local dishes. It actually reflects WHY it's so hard to find a place serving this particular kind of food. As explained to us when we asked around (mostly Amsterdam shops' employees and various tour guides), what's considered "traditional" is basically what people still cook at home. Classic case of it's just not something people usually need to go out to eat. Moeders is one of the exceptions we found, specifically focusing on the family and home-cooked aspect. Specifically, they're all about the celebration of moeders (Dutch for mothers). They have a really sweet story about how they're opening in the first place was due to the support of the locals. Apparently, the dishes, flatware, and cutlery were donated by locals who came in, brought them along to use, and donated them. Hence, why everything is mismatched. All the food we got was heavy, hearty, and came in large portions. I think all of us really liked the Voder's/Father's Spare-Ribs as well as the three kinds of sauces that came with them. I also liked my sirloin, as the combination of the bearnaise sauce, sirloin, greens, and fried veggie was enjoyable. Overall, I would recommend it. We all enjoyed ourselves. It was cluttered in a clean, cozy, intimate way and a fun experience. Kudos to Moeders and their staff, you guys are just lovely.

Yelp
We found this restaurant on a list recommended for Dutch cuisine. For Americans looking for an intro to Dutch food we felt it did not disappoint. The food tasted like hearty home cooking (my boyfriend described it as a Dutch thanksgiving experience) and the restaurant had a lovely vibe and concept (dedicated to all mothers). We ordered the tasting sampler for 2, which allowed us to try the stamppot (sauerkraut mixed into mashed potatoes, served with thick bacon and sausage) and two different beef stews. It came with applesauce, red lettuce, and 2 other variations on potatoes. We liked that this gave us an introduction into what Dutch home cooking might be like. The only issue for us was that there were too many potato dishes (did not finish), the applesauce and lettuce seemed more like filler items, and we felt that just one beef stew would have been enough. We did enjoy the stamppot and beef stew so we probably would opt against the sampler next time. It was $20 per person with too much of the other food we didn't particularly want to eat. The apple pie here is a must! It tasted like heaven!

Yelp
Moeders isn't exactly a hidden gem, but a beloved establishment and the epitome of strong women empowerment that is very much embraced today. Open its front door and you'll catch a small preview of the inside: the walls and ceiling filled to the brim with photos in pretty frames as a tribute to mothers and hard-working Dutch women, and not an inch of space left to spare for an extra 4x6. Remove the novelty photos, the neon pink lights will probably have me mistaken it for a retro American diner. "Moeders" is exactly what it sounds like: Dutch for "mothers". The food is made with love from the force behind the restaurant: Annie, Betty, and Corrie, each with their own respective speciality menu of traditional Dutch food. I came here to try Annie's Stamppot, which is mashed potatoes mixed with sauerkraut, topped with bacon, meatball, a smoked sausage link from one of Amsterdam's best butchers, Butcher Louman, and a side of gravy to shower your Stamppot in. I admit that I hadn't had a proper breakfast and lunch that day and had a light meal only 20 minutes prior to arriving here but I made sure I finished everything on my plate. It was also my first time trying Stamppot and I LOVED it. It felt as if I was sitting in someone's home and indulging in all the love and care they put in. I love mashed potatoes, so this was great for me. Not sure if the gravy pairing actually did much, other than make it more moist, but the meat toppings were fresh and delicious. If you're not a fan of sauerkraut, you may be disappointed, which is a shame since Stamppot is a hearty meal itself. I suggest coming here before peak hours for an early dinner since it seems like they're jam-packed with reservations, but totally accommodating if you eat before the rush sweeps in.

Yelp
Moeders is a fantastic restaurant in Amsterdam, but I'm giving it 3 stars because of the service. My friend and I came in one snowy night hoping to be seated. We didn't have a reservation but wouldn't have minded waiting a little bit. We came in at around 7, but the staff turned us away saying there was no seats available. The next day, my friend and I decided that it was still worth it to give it a shot and come here to eat, so we came early to ensure we'd get a seat, and we did. We were ready to order within 5 minutes, but we had to wait around 10 minutes before a waitress came to take our order. People who were seated after us had already ordered and they still did not come to us for a while. We both ordered the stamppot (or hotchpotch). I got the vegetarian one and my friend got the original one. Read below for review on the food. After we were done eating, we wanted to leave to go explore other parts of Amsterdam, but we were stuck there. The waitresses did not come to us and we kept trying to stop them so we could pay. While that may seem rude of us, we sat there for at least 10 minutes before doing so. Paying was a breeze and we left shortly after. As for the food, both of us really enjoyed it. I thought that there could have been a little more stuff in it as towards the end, all I was eating were potatoes, but it still had good flavor and good portions. Overall 3 stars for service, 4 for food

Yelp
When in the place, always give the traditional food a try. In Amsterdam, Moeders has made their name as one of the city's top places to go for traditional Dutch home cooked style cuisine. Stepping into the small restaurant, where tables are set cozily together (but not so close as to making it hard to have a good conversation), the place is laid out like a cozy old school mothers dining room. The walls are covered with photos of "moms" from all over the world it seems. They offer a la carte or 3 course special sets where prices change depending on your choice of entree. They start you off with a lovely basket of fresh crusty bread, I literally could hear the crunch of the crust as they cut it! For the appetizers we went for the appetizer sampler and the island egg dish. The sampler offers a lovely variety, while the egg dish was amazing with a sweet potato "shell" and filled with spinach, onion and cheese and topped with an egg. For the entree, we both went with hotchpotch, me the meat one with sauerkraut stampot and him the vegetable one. They were both delicious and very filling with all that potato. I thought I did a good job but felt like I barely made much of a dent - doggie bag it is! Last but most definitely not least, apple pie for dessert was absolutely amazing. The apples were coated lightly in cinnamon and not too sweet, making each bite with the accompanying whipped cream and ice cream truly delicious. A great finale to a delish dinner. And to digest all this, we made sure to walk all the way back home!

Yelp
This place was amazing! We had the beef stew with onions, green pea soup and the stampot. They were ALL 5-stars with great flavor and love put into each one. The meatball was soft and flavorful and the sausage was also a bit airy, not so dense like others. This place books up fast! (right now they have reservations a month out). If you're a couple of people with no reservations, pop in to see if they had a cancellation. That's how we got it and well worth it!
