Yelp
Moes is a solid place to get BBQ, so far it is one of my favs in cville. I would recommend it over red hub, ace bbq, and devils backbone (known for beer but also do bbq), but mission bbq up 29 still is my fav. If you're really into BBQ it may just feel average to you but overall the food is solid and I would be back.
We ordered takeout for dinner, so it may be best to come in person for lunch when their food is fresher. I think they make it fresh daily but the earlier you can get there the better since they can run out.
Our friends decided on a 1lb pulled pork platter to share with Mac and cheese baked beans buns cornbread and bbq sauce. This was abt $45 tax and tip and can feed 3-4 hungry adults. I would HIGHLY recommend the family packs - the regular plates run about $20 each, so you'll probably save money ordering this way.
Food was kinda a mixed bag. The bbq sauce is the only one they have available it sounds like but this is not a problem - their sauce is AMAZING! Really delicious smoky slightly sweet and tangy flavor. Very good.
The buns were also really really good, nice and large and cooked. Glad it wasn't a raw bun out of a package.
I was kind of disappointed in their pork - the pull is great, same with the portion and the smokiness, but it seems like their temp was either too high or they cooked a bit long. Either way, the pork was pretty dry and since this was the main event I knocked them back a star.
The cornbread had mixed reviews, I may have been the only one who liked it. It is a breadier cornbread so not cake-like and it comes without corn pieces but with pieces of either jalapeño or green pepper. I like a more savory cornbread and it was moist and subtle so I thought it was good. My boyfriend prefers a sweeter more dessert tasting CB, so just heads up that it leans more savory. It is also pretty tame in terms of the seasoning.
The mac and cheese also received mixed reviews. Again I liked it but some other in our party did not. It is actually really well seasoned and very moist, which is a bit hard to do with a baked mac. This is a BBQ joint, so it's a southern baked Mac and cheese which is what it should be from a place like this. Unfortunately the cheese gets a little lost which just happens with baked macs sometimes, but I was impressed with the seasoning and the moisture level. Overall it's good but don't expect sauciness or a lot of cheesiness. It's a well seasoned baked pasta with some cheese bits.
The baked beans are out of this world - best I've ever had. Highly recommend you pick this. They have peppers and pork and maybe some other stuff in there. In any case the flavor is really complex and really well seasoned. Very very good.
Overall I was impressed with the seasoning in multiple dishes here, and if they could nail down the temp/time on the pulled pork this would be a knockout. I would definitely go in earlier in the day to try to get it fresh made and I'd love to try some of their other sides and meats! I'd be back.
