Mokdong Gimbap

I was trying to go to Tomo Ramen next door, but they were slammed. I saw the sign for Mokdong and decided to give it a try. I ordered the gyoza, bacon kimbap, pork katsu, and mango hard tea. The food was so delicious that I only got a pic of my drink, and the portions were so generous that I had plenty of leftovers. All the dishes came with pickled veggies and dressed salads/ garnish. It might be the best pork katsu I’ve had in the city, and the employees were kind and attentive. Absolutely recommend, you may miss it by just walking by!

Best Gimbap in portland! The tteokbokki was sooo delicious as well! Preferable for a couple people or smaller groups. Definitely come and visit if you’re near Hawthorne :)

Great little hole in the wall venue with outstanding food. The kiosk at the entrance makes ordering food simple and easy. It's a small venue, so many of the orders were take out. Good value for the portion sizes. Flavors were amazing. It's definitely a repeat.

I've been here once before and it was delicious. Was craving kimbap so I decided to stop by again for lunch today only to find them closed. Says on Google they are open, says on the door they should be open. But, they aren't open. Super disappointing. Stuff happens, but you could at least post something on the door or update your hours online....

Excellent bibimbap I ordered through DoorDash after finding this place is close to Matcha Premium Maiko. Good ratings and I now know why! Two bibimbaps to go: one was tofu and the other was spicy pork. Spicy pork is not spicy but looks like it is. Good taste, so it’s marinated well and the meat isn’t tough to chew, like some other places. I loved the spicy pork bibimbap though. All fresh ingredients! They give a lot of vegetables, which is so nice, because other places are very sparing with their ingredients. I’m usually left with so much rice at the end. However, this place did a good job giving the right amount of ingredients. They also gave a small cup of miso soup - thank you! Would get this again! My husband enjoyed his tofu version. If you’re someone who wants spice, add some of the red sauce they give you in a cup. I was very happy the spicy pork wasn’t spicy, but I liked being able to control any spice with the red sauce.

I’m so happy to have found this place, I was craving comfort food and this hit the spot. I ordered takeout in-store (they have the option to order at the register or from a screen by the door, which I appreciate as an indecisive person) and got my food in 5 minutes. I requested tofu instead of fish cakes in the tteokbokki and they swapped it no problem. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The veggie gyoza were still crispy by the time I got home, and the tofu kimbap was absolute perfection. And check out the cheese pull, 10/10. I’m already dreaming about what I’ll order next time!

A great casual Korean spot with good prices, portions, and flavors. Even though the restaurant name is Mokdong Gimbap, we tried two main dishes: pork cutlet and seafood soon-tofu. I’ve been craving the style of pork cutlet I used to have in Korea, and it was exactly what we were hoping for—so good! While we were enjoying that, the seafood soon-tofu came out, and it was perfectly seasoned, not bland or off at all. We got the medium spice level, which had a nice kick—perfect if you like real Korean spiciness. The seafood in the soon-tofu was fresh and plenty, and the side dishes were authentic and tasted homemade. The owner was super friendly, which made the whole experience even better. Next time, I’ll definitely try their Gimbap!

RECOMMEND! Not looking at that the space is small inside, but food and service were amazing. We ordered 2 김밥들 (Gimbaps), 떡볶이 (Tteokbokki), and Kimchi Jeon (pancake). Everything was yum yum. Also, peach guava tea was amazing with small pieces of canned fruits inside . My favorite green tea was also a great addition to food (tea pod was quite big for one person, so better ask additional tea cup).

Fun stop while strolling Hawthorne! Korean casual ~ a couple fresh Gimbap rolls, spicy tteokbokki, vegan gyozas and wash down with some Asian beer! Prices are great! Service ~ order at counter, food brought to your number given. Friendly and smiley. Small 2 seat table perfect off the sidewalk on a sunny day. *Back of the restaurant ~ rainbow umbrella ceiling with comfortable chairs for a relaxed mood.

Very easy to order with the kiosk! I really love the environment of the restaurant. If you go into the back, it's super quirky and chill. The kimbaps are delicious and perfect to snack on. Affordable too. Similar to the cost of kimbap at Hmart. I didn't try anything else on the menu but I liked how there were vegan options.

FANTASTIC Tonkatsu! I mean... just look at the photo! And, that's not just one cutlet, that 2, that's right 2, TWO cutlets! BWAHAHAHAHA! I've loved tonkatsu forever and a day, but what makes this place such a joy is that their take on it is not just the Korean version (I wonder which came first... hmmm...) which is pounded thin and coated extra crisp compared to the Japanese counterpart, but it comes with a housemate tonkatsu sauce! That's right, not just the typical bottled Bull Dog sauce, but their own, which is still clearly from the same heritage, but has slight overtones that differ and make this such a fun experience! And..., look at that plate! The part that is not covered by the tonkatsu's massive self has a salad that was really tasty, some good short-grain rice that had good flavor and stickiness to it and plenty of shredded cabbage, a must. And... To top it all off, and this is kind of a Pro Tip, I got to sit outside on the sidewalk on a weekend, watching (and being watched... or at least my food was) all the folks go by in front of me and in front of the Baghdad across the street. How fun is that? They do have extensive indoor seating, a deli case, a variety of gimbap (Korean sushi roll) that I am SURE will not disappoint and all that, when I was there, run by the sweetest young lady who was busy but didn't mind chatting just a bit and adding to the generous nature of the whole experience. I"LL BE BACK!!!

Cute small clean spot! I like how there's a self order kiosk. The gimbap gets brought to your table once you sit down. The rolls are large but I would say I was missing that extra sesame oil and pickled veggies I look for in gimbap. We got the calamari, pork cutlet, and crab salad. There was a bunch of crab salad in our roll, but very tiny fine pieces of calamari. Where I was wondering what roll we had bought. The pork cutlet was crispy, though. Nothing too oily at all. Overall I would've liked a more consistent pickle, some rolls I bit into I could taste the daikon and others not so much. I liked the salad as a nice palate cleanser and the spicy Mayo was a nice touch. Otherwise still good cute find!

Plus points -- love the variety of kimbap to suite most dietary restrictions. Downside price/quality/taste variation. I swung by this place for a quick dinner with a friend on weekday; we knew how petite it was but were able to get a seat pretty quickly! The set up is pretty chill -- order at the kiosk on entry, food gets delivered to your table. We went with a couple kimbaps each and also grabbed some tteokbokki or spicy rice cakes. The kimbap was good; filling and flavorful and seemed worth the price tbh. The tteokbokki on the other hand was watery, broken, and not too flavorful --seemed rather frozen/instantly made with the tell tale sign of cracks or breaks in the rice cakes themselves. I'm usually a huge fan but was left rathe underwhelmed. Prices seem a bit steep for a kiosk type set up but service was kind when they brought food out. Overall, not a bad spot to grab kimbap or snacks; would be rather handy for a trip or picnic.

Small quaint place. With Korean comfort food. The gimbap avg around $6, my favorite had to be the tuna. All the protein was made to order which I can appreciate. No soggy food! Can't wait to come back and try the Katsu!

I was excited to see a new Korean restaurant in PDX since there is a lack of good Korean food here. I grew up in a Korean/American household and have been eating Kim bap my whole life. Having said that, the Kim bap here is kinda "mid" as my kids would put it. There was not much taste to it at all. The salad that came with it had an odd tasting dressing that I didn't like. My other half ordered the pork katsu and he couldn't finish it. I've rarely ever seen him not finish his food. The pork katsu sauce had a weird salty flavor and the steamed rice was salty too. The store is small but the tables are small too so we were able to find a table. The server was too busy to bus tables so we had to settle for a dirty one. We tried to find someone to give us something to wipe the table down but there is minimal staff here that are busy. If you are looking for some good Kim bap I recommend going to the Hmart on Belmont, theirs has a lot of umami like my mom and grandma used to make. Not coming back here

Korean restaurant that specializes in Korean sushi (Gimbap). They have the other staples as well like tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and bim bim bap, katsu etc Their name implies they specialize in Gimbaps. They have a selection of over 15? different ones. Plenty of options for vegetarians. Priced in the $6/7 range per roll. You get 6 pieces. 2 rolls should be enough for most people to have a meal. They also come with 2 small salads to accompany them which is a nice surprise. Quality of ingredients is top notch. The rolls will mostly taste the same though as they only substitute one ingredient as the others ones are included in all the options.

Walking in it's a cute, light n bright bistro setting. You order at the kiosk (if you get a soft drink just grab from the coolers, alcohol is separate) and then they bring you the yums. The kimbop was so good! Not a ton of food but inexpensive enough that you can double up no problem. We loved all the flavors and presentation. We also got the kimchi pancake--I could eat those all dang day. Looking forward to coming back and snagging some of the amazing looking katsu!

I was sooo looking forward to trying out this new fast casual Korean eatery as a kimbap lover. Upon entering, there's a kiosk for ordering: dine in or to go but photos are lacking and you can't order alcohol (makes sense but confusing.) price is okay but hate to say this I won't return because they really.. didn't taste great. I ordered the original one and the bulgogi one. Original was okay but bland. Bulgogi was also bland and the beef was like.. steak-y/deli roast beef-y and def not bulgogi.. side salad was terrible... service is friendly and gets two stars.

overall: 3/5 food: 3/5 service: 3/5 ambiance: 3/5 mokdong gimbap recently had their grand opening, and we were excited to try! the exterior and interior doesn't really match the vibe of the food that they sell, but i do believe that they are undergoing remodeling soon. on the self kiosk, we ordered the tteokbokki, the spicy pork kimbap, and the bulgolgi kimbap! first impressions of the food while ordering were the prices- relatively affordable compared to other places! while waiting at one of the open tables, we were served water, which was nice :). when we got our food, they were given in takeout containers- but we still ate it at the restaurant. the portions were a lot smaller than i expected- only 6 pieces in the rolls (compared to 8 larger sized pieces from other restaurants), and the $10 rice cakes were also quite small too. presentation wise, i appreciated the effort they put into making the dishes look nice! taste wise, the rolls we had unfortunately lacked in the flavor aspect for us- the ratio of ingredients to rice were great though! as for the tteokbokki, it was just spicy and hot (temperature wise) when we first had it. but a few hours later when i had it again as leftovers, i could taste the flavor of the soup! it was well seasoned and i can tell that the foods are made with love. this establishment just opened, but i do believe that mokdong has the potential to improve in their ambiance and food. i am looking forward to how they will grow!

First time visiting this restaurant. We ordered two reg kimbop, one bulgogi kimbop, tteukboki and miso soup. This was a take out order. Instead of bulgogi kimbop, they gave us three reg kimbop which had no flavor. Rice was not seasoned nor were the veggies. Tteuboki (spicy rice cake) dish had dry seasoning from instant ramen. Shame on you guys for lack of effort in making sauce from scratch. Can't recommend and can't go back. For all non Korean customers, this is not a true representation of these dishes.

Gimbap galore! Mokdong has 20+ different types of gimbap to choose from. We got the spicy pork and pork cutlet, along with the tteokbokki. The gimbap came with a side salad and several sauces (the spicy mayo-ish one was our favorite). The tteokbokki tasted fresh. I want to come back and try their pork cutlet. Service was nice and polite and they brought us water and free miso soup. Stop by if you're in the area!

This is a great Gimbap place with a few entrees and sides. I went with a couple friends and we tried 6 different Gimbap. The spicy pork and the fried tofu were the highlights. The beef blanket and egg blanket were tasty but the outer wrapping didn't want to stay on and was a little messy. The tteokbokki is my favorite in town so far! Spicy but not so much it hurts, and has a beautiful savory flavor that I loved. I need to go again to try more things!

Food was amazing! I ordered the bulgogi, shrimp and calamari gimBap. The service was great too. Would highly recommend and will be coming back.

Stopped in for the soft opening after seeing an ad on social media . . . I was excited to try the place out, especially as I was craving Korean food, and gimbap (rice and fillings in a seaweed roll, similar to a sushi roll, subbing Korean flavors and fillings for the raw fish) sounded great. The space is cute, with a black and white theme going, kind of a a mix between a fancy dining room and a bistro. There's a large chandelier which dominates the space, over two display cases and the counter in the back, while there's a half-dozen or so small two-tops in the front, with some fake windows on the wall to give it a street cafe kind of vibe. There were two cold display cases up front that mainly had different types of gimbap on display, though the display wasn't super helpful - hard to tell what the fillings are in gimbap, even if you see a cross section and they're layed out artistically, but these were still in rolled up form in take out containers, so they all pretty much looked alike, and I ended up relying upon the menu descriptions instead. The variety of gimbaps they had was impressive, with probably close to 20 different items, ranging from a traditional gimbap to things like asparagus, tofu, bulgogi wrapped, etc. The menu also included some various katsu items, as well as bibimbap, and some appetizers. I almost got the bibimbap but I wanted to try out a few different things. I was stoked to see kimchi jeon (pancake) on the menu, but then a little disappointed when they didn't have it (which I totally get is part of a soft opening). I ended up ordering a spam gimbap, a kimchi gimbap, and a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake). The menu definitely encourages a bit of mix and match with the gimbap roll prices from $4 to $7 or so, and the appetizers being in the same range. (The katsu items and the bibimbap were in the $15 to $20 range). There was also complimentary soup station next to where you ordered, so I made myself a little bowl of miso, adding in some seaweed, tofu, and green onions, which was a nice little touch. Was a little surprised when the food came out as the presentation was way fancier than I expected - the two gimbap were on a big plate with a small salad on the side, as well as ramekin of some kind of spicy aioli, while the tteokbokki was in an oversized bowl. I really liked the spam gimbap (hard to go wrong with that salty goodness). The kimchi one was fine, though I would have liked a bit more kimchi flavor - felt like there wasn't much kimchi, and it was pretty fresh, so you didn't get the strong fermented punch you might expect (though might be more popular for Western palettes with the fresher kimchi). I could have used some chojang (a spicy dipping sauce that's mainly Korean gochujang) instead of the aioli. That being said, the tteokbokki filled that gap. It had that blend of sweet and spicy I was looking for, and plenty of sauce for dipping in the gimbap pieces. The other surprise with the tteokbokki was the egg - I thought it'd be a hard boiled egg, and was a little surprised it hadn't been cut in half. I split it with my chopsticks, and was pleasantly surprised to find a perfectly soft-boiled egg with a brilliantly runny yolk. Overall, I liked the spot and definitely want to try stopping in again. The price point is pretty wallet friendly and encourages trying several items, which is great when the menu has so many options. Protip: make sure to order the tteokbokki and to dip your gimbap pieces in the sauce if you want a little spicy kick.

I smiled when I saw the prices. I felt it was reasonable enough I could try 2 different Kimbap's since they have around 20 varieties! It was hard to tell them apart except for the one wrapped in bacon! Yum! What made them super delicious was the 3 dipping sauces they brought when requesting soy sauce. The decor was a bit odd for a Korean restaurant, but I enjoyed the lovely chopsticks and water jars at each table. I will definitely be back and bring another friend with me.

Great new addition to the neighborhood! Kimbap's were fresh and tasty, their Tteokbokki was delicious! They just opened 2 weeks ago so I would be patient with their staff while they work out all the kinks. Definitely coming back to check out the rest of their menu.

Gave this place a try after seeing it on TikTok - was excited to try a new kimbap spot in Portland! Parking in this area can be tough but you'll eventually find a spot if you circle around. There's a kiosk to order on when you first step in - it's really close to the door, so a line might start outside if it's busy. I ordered for to-go but there wasn't really a spot to stand while waiting. The tables inside are small and it can take a bit for the staff to clear the them after guests are done eating. I ordered the Spam Kimbap, Pork Cutlet Kimbap, and Fried Calamari Kimbap. It was a bit pricey for the portion, but the presentation was nice. 4 stars for decent food, though the ambiance/layout could be more inviting.

Had lunch here with a friend. This is a great lunch spot. There are a ton of Kebap flavors and the prices are all really good each rolls about five or six pieces. I would definitely come again!

Tiny but mighty! This new "Korean Deli" was such a treat! My boyfriend and I wanted to try it but it hasn't opened yet so we waited and there was a line for the opening! I ordered the original kimbap and my boyfriend got the bulgogi one. SO GOOD! I wish I had got the kimchi. It was so tasty I'm definitely coming back!

Had lunch here with a few friends. We shared the beef bibimbap, fried pancake, and kimbap (crab cake, shrimp tempura, bulgogi, and chicken katsu). You order/pay at a kiosk by the front door and choose your own seats. Hot tip: there is more seating in the backroom for larger groups and was super cute (go the through the hallway). It was cold but they had a heater lamp on for us. We enjoyed everything and ordered more to take home.

I think the Gimbap from the Korean grocery markets are better tasting and cheaper.....

I would say it's an authentic gimbap from korea. The calamari and shrimp gimbap were great!

What a great addition to the neighborhood! The food is delicious, cheap, and fast. There are lots of options for vegetarians and vegans. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Came here today and ordered the bibimbap with tofu. Was so delicious! The tofu is incredible. I can't wait to go back and try everything else! So happy to have them in the neighborhood!
