BOIL, DIP, EAT... REPEAT
- FOOD: qualify
- PRICE: expensive but fair because of quality
- SERVICE: always exceptional
- AMBIANCE: specious and clean shabu joint
For a better deal and for a new-comber, went for the "SPECIALS FOR 2". There were a few sets to choose from but the one that allowed both of us to sample all their meats was the BEEF SAMPLER, it was the way to go. And I do believe is the best deal of all the sets.
BEEF SAMPLER ($111) - choice of drink - 2 Sapporo beers, hot/cold sake, or soft drinks (went for soft drinks) + 6 slices of every cut in lowest to highest price order: Flat Iron, Brisket, Toto, New York, Prime Rib, Kataroshin (Wagyu), and Zabuton (Wagyu) + 6 fried garlic fried shrimps + 2 desserts. Everything else comes standard - each select your choice of broth, get a bowl of brown rice, and a bowl of vegetable for the broth. Past experience one type of meat is always orders and although I do switch up my meets here and there I never got to really sit there and compare in details. Doing the beef sampler gave me that opportunity. HIGY RECOMMEND
Favorite to least favorite
- Zabuton (wagyu) and Karaoshin (Wagyu): equally loved and liked the most. Wagyu is the choice of meat for top shabu protein quality. Both flavorful and so tender.
- Prime Rib: savory and tender
- New York: savory and tender but not as tender as the Prime Rib
- Flat Iron: this would be your average meat for shabu. Its texture would be in the middle not the most tenderest and not the most chewiest
- Toro: fattiest of the meats and it didn't leave a lasting impression except for it being average in memory.
- Brisket: usually the favorite for kbbq but I've come to learn for shabu it is much chewier than the rest of the meats
6 FRIED GARLIC SHRIMPS - the beef sampler included this dish. I never think to stray away from anything besides Shabu meats at a Shabu restaurant but this was served with our Set. It was treated like an appetizer as our broths boiled up. If you Asian, your peeling finger skills will be needed. Although very seasoned the flavor is on the shell. The shrimp meat was good but less flavored. It came with a slice of lemon and a black squid ink dipping sauce which was light but good. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
YAKITORI MENU - this is new. Although the food above was plentiful, I went with one of the Yakitori to try and went for the Chicken Skins. Hmm thought it was okay. texture was suppose to be a little more crispy but it was chewy with a little fruity edges. I questioned if I was eating skin or intestine (blah). The Swiss flavor was sweeter than I liked. Will pass on this next time.
DESSERTS - the beef sampler included 2 desserts which was a choice of macarons or taiyaki. Both selected Taiyaki. They were ok, bug in size and ice cream filling portion is light. Perfect to end the meal.
Been to Mokkoji many times in OC, but this is my 3rd time at the San Diego location and will most certainly NOT be my last.
Until the next review...
