Mokomandy, Northern Virginia’s Celebrated Korean-Cajun Restaurant, Closes for Good - Eater DC

"Mokomandy, the Korean-Cajun restaurant in Sterling that holds the No. 1 spot on the latest edition of Northern Virginia Magazine’s 50 Best Restaurants list, is permanently closed. Owner Thaddeus Kim tells the local magazine that the strip mall spot in Loudoun County would not be able to make a viable return to business while the service industry cautiously emerges from the novel coronavirus crisis." - Gabe Hiatt

D.C.'s Essential Cajun Restaurants - Eater DC

"This self-styled experiment in wedding Korean food with Cajun cooking doesn’t mix-and-match the cuisines, presenting each style individually. So wild boar-filled, kimchi-spiked rice bowls live alongside — but do not intrude upon — buttery shrimp etouffee, grilled oysters punched up by horseradish, and tasso ham-studded jambalaya topped with addictive pork cracklins." - Eater Staff

Every Restaurant Featured on Season 1 of ‘Check, Please! DC’ - Eater DC

"This Sterling gem has been offering its modern take on American, Cajun and Korean cuisine ever since it opened in 2010. That confluence of flavors prompted the guest critic to praise the casual restaurant for its “unique combination” after eating its foie gras dumplings, octopus, and pork-belly skewers." - Lenore Adkins

This establishment is truly a hidden gem in Sterling, VA. Nice decor, comfortable seating, and the food is nothing short of amazing. A friend and I ordered 3 sides, 3 small plates, along with 1 medium plate and were extremely happy with every single dish. The food was hot and full of flavor. Very nice combination of familiar Korean and Cajun dishes and some of the best pork belly i have ever had. The gumbo, bulgogi, and bison dumplings were fantastic as well. Don't forget to pick some sides as they are a perfect addition to an already intriguing menu. The restaurant is busy and lively. I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. They seemed a little short staffed on our visit, but the customer service was impeccable and everyone we encountered was very friendly. I will most certainly be returning and recommending Mokomandy to friends. Awesome dining experience.

Food was great. Very different but entertaining on its own. Small dishes so easy to try many different tastes. We sat at the bar and that made for more entertainment. The drinks are creative and fun to see them getting made.

Really unique and delicious food in an upscale location within a strip mall. They serve up a mix of Cajun and Korean foods but not fusion just some from each cuisine. They have iconic dishes of both like shrimp and grits or Korean Ssam and soup. But they have some others which are absolutely a must try. The octopus and pork belly skewers are to die for. They are absolutely the best I've had anywhere in the world. Everything was well cooked although be prepared for it to take 1 or 2 hours to finish a meal for a large party (we had 7) due to the tapas presentation and the intricate cooking. The Korean Karnivore Ssam was also fantastic with the short ribs cooked to perfection. The fish of the day which was a flounder was cooked just right and the sauce and vegetable sides paired really well. Finally the creme brulee was amazing with nice ginger notes but not overwhelmingly sweet. Servers were friendly and quick although slightly understaffed for the large dining area. They did the best they could with such a large party and the staff was fantastic. We also had a small problem with one dish which was quickly corrected and the overall service recovery was great. Highly recommend checking this place out. Definitely one of the best and most unique eateries in the area.

Different, contemporary, and delicious! Mokomandy has a really interesting menu! They feature a blend of new American and Korean fusion recipes that are different and really tasty. They definitely are trying to impress in the flavor department with their food. Most of the dishes are small plates, so order several dishes to share among friends and family. Prices on plates are moderate to slightly pricey, but it's certainly worth a try. They have a very friendly staff, but the restaurant is fairly small, so it can fill up fast at busy times! Definitely would come here again.

If you think you've had it, guess again! This restaurant has great creativity and amazing flavor. Not to mention the staff is not only helpful, but so knowledgeable and friendly that you feel like a long time friend. I moved from California and have found my favorite eating spot already. No matter what taste palate you may have, mokomandy has something that will make your knees weak and arms spaghetti. If the staff reads this: Thank you for your knowledge and friendliness, I'll do my best to get you some Pliney the Elder.

We hadn't been to Mokomandy in years, but we will definitely be back more often! It is delicious and exciting with all of the dishes that are constantly changing. Pictured below are the bison dumplings which had an amazing broth. The fried catfish balls which were very tasty with the sauce and mustard. The bulgogi beef dish was probably our favorite which came with purple rice and some vegetable sides. The shrimp tempura was delicious as well as were the fingerling potatoes. We ended with a chocolate pudding dessert with a side of beignets. Overall a must if you're in the area!

Eaten here every few months. Food is consistently Great! Tapas dishes are wonderful to share and try something new like Bone Marrow (pictured). Other photos of kale chips, hush puppies and venison tacos. We also got deviled eggs, bison dumplings and oysters but they were gone before I could snap any pics!

I've had this place on my Google maps places I want to try and finally got to try it. It's a cross between Korean a d Cajun but not quite either kind if a mash up of both cuisines with it's own twist. Started off with their bloody mary which they had their own mix and used Tito's vodka. I asked for spicy so the bartender added extra spice, and he was great enough to check if it was spicy enough and I asked for a bit more spicy and he accommodated me. Ordered the Korean cucumbers, bulgogi and jambalaya. All we're excellent. I really loved the Jambalaya, a bit rich but super tasty, the cracklin on top was just the perfect garnish! Excellent food and service, make sure you visit?
