Coronavirus in NYC: Crowds Form Outside Mexican Restaurants on Cinco de Mayo - Eater NY

"A large group formed outside Mole, with half delivery workers and the other half waiting for takeout with margaritas, turning nearby Abingdon Square Park into a de facto open-air bar." - Gary He

I found the staff very friendly. It was way overpriced for mediocre mole enchiladas ($32). A good selection of foods, margaritas.

Google
If you're down in the Village, you have to stop my Mole! The atmosphere is incredible cozy exposed brick, great energy, amazing drinks! A huge thank you to my good friends Nick, Lupe, and their cousin Hector for the incredible hospitality.

Google
Amazing quality Mexican food here on a quiet street in a very hipster part of town. Definitely try and get a seat outside to enjoy the sun and calm ambiance around you. I ordered the hard taco on the lunch menu, which was significantly cheaper than the ones on the regular menu and a great size for anyone with a big appetite after walking about 15,000 steps. The guacamole wasn’t too spicy, so I recommend mixing it with the salsa and asking for more chilli sauce.

Google
The tall guy server not friendly. He got our orders. Took a while to come. After that Didn't bother to check on us. We had to call him every time we need something. While 2 persons each got two servings of sangrias and 2 margarits for the 3rd person, we asked for the 2nd serving of chips. He gave us a quiet look. Ill go Fonda. Just a few blocks from it. Good food, service and fun friendly atmosphere.

Google
I really enjoyed eating at Mole. The food was tasty and the service was terrific. Our waiter Hector treated us well and made excellent recommendations. We decided to eat outside which was perfect, however the inside was very nice as well. The Margheritas were good, not great. But it didn't stop me from ordering two. My civeche was full of flavor and very satisfying. The chicken, fish and steak tacos were also delicious. I really enjoyed their guacamole as well. I would definitely return!

Google
I tend to judge a Mexican restaurant on the salsa and a classic margarita. Can you do the basics? Móle knocked it out of the park! Absolutely phenomenal. The carne asada tacos were also top notch.

Nicolas Manassi

Google
Food is really good and abundant. I feel that they have to improve on the service side. Food and drinks takes a while to arrive and staff is not that careful. They didn’t bring water and we had to ask 3 times for it..

Google
Great food, drinks and service! We had the house margaritas, guacamole and two types of tacos- grilled salmon and beef brisket. Everything was delicious but the beef brisket taco was outstanding. Highly recommend a visit!

Yelp
We've done it, folks. We've hit $30 for 3 tacos in Manhattan. As soon as I scanned the menu at Móle, I was pretty sure it would be mediocre, but wanting to give the place a fair shake, I ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, a $56 meat platter. It was disappointing, with the pork and chicken being cut bizarrely and also being overcooked. No idea how this dish was supposed to be eaten or be presented but it was a travesty with, as other reviews state, the cheapest-possible cuts of meat. Prices are outrageous and the food, at best, is basic Mexican.

Yelp
Absolutely Delicious. Friendly. Variety. Fresh delicious guacamole. Hand made tortilla's Everything you could want plus more

Yelp
We had dinner reservations at Móle before heading uptown for a Knicks game. This spot came highly recommended as having great food and being a local favorite. The restaurant itself is pretty small but what they lack in space, they make up with the food. We were very satisfied with our food. We had the carne asada tacos, puerco enchilada tacos, enchilada Rojas and verde. The drinks were also very good. I would highly recommend Móle and will come back next time im in the area!

Yelp
Superb and authentic. We started out with chips and Guacamole which I highly recommend . There were five of us , four ordered the special of chile verde (pork shank) and it was exceptional. The other in our group ordered the tacos plate and it was also fantastic. The place is a bit tight but it's NYC and the service made up for that. I also had the spicy pineapple margarita which I'd rate a 3.5

Yelp
A very welcoming bar that we just stumbled upon and decided to have a drink. The service was very friendly and the margaritas were excellent. We loved the atmosphere of this cozy restaurant and will definitely be back for dinner soon.

Yelp
Came here on a beautiful day out and wanted to grab some food and drinks. Sat outside, but the street was a bit narrow. Not a long wait to get seated but place was pretty full when we came. Probably because there aren't a lot of other options. Location is also a bit obscure and we stumbled upon it. Ordered some margaritas and they were definitely tasty and strong. Also ordered some chips and salsa and guac and it was definitely all fresh and well made but it was pretty sparse that we needed to order another set of chips to use up our guac. Service was good. Overall, an ok place. I used to live in California, so my bar is pretty high for Mexican food and NYC doesn't do it well. One of the very few downsides to the amazing food options here.

Yelp
Cute restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Food came out timely and drinks were really good. We ordered the white sangria and pineapple margarita. Both entrees were good too! One note: my flautas were supposed to come with rice and beans and they did not. Perhaps that was a miscommunication but it doesn't change my review. Still good food and great service!

Yelp
This place offers delicious Mexican food and superb drinks with an excellent bartender Isabel BUT their need to fix the drafty doors! In the dead of winter, can't enjoy eating there as the front door keep opening up and the freezing wind making it impossible to enjoy eating there. I'm shocked the owners just let This happen. Also the little curtain inside the second door needs to be replaced with something more effective.

Camille C.

Yelp
Ridiculous. Rude. Inconsiderate. I wanted to give this place a try will not be coming back. Service was terrible from start to finish. Not only did they forget to give us menus, forget our appetizer, never come to check on us throughout the duration or our meal, make us wait 1/2 hour for the check (after we asked several times), they tried to charge us for the food we never received. The fish tacos were good but not worth the price or the hassle.

Yelp
Decent but not stunning Mexican food option we tried this weekend! Ambiance was casual close quarters but festive inside, with lots of people standing at the small bar. Quite a few outdoor tables as well. The guacamole was certainly super pricey for a small portion but tasty. I really didn't like the salsa which was mostly sweet without much spice. My husband loved his tacos and while my veggie quesadilla was yummy I found it a little off putting the huge chunks of nearly raw peppers. Corn tortillas on the tacos were especially delish and fresh. Service was lovely and prompt! No major complaints but not incredibly memorable for NYC Mexican options.

Yelp
Mole offers some great Mexican dishes, along with some not-so-great ones - luckily I'm here to tell you which is which. The Quesadilla with chorizo was great. It was super flavorful and cheesy with a slight spicy kick, though it was a bit too oily. It was also a rather large portion size, but I suppose that justified the $18 price tag. The Flautas Doradas (crispy tacos), on the other hand, were not so great. We ordered them with shredded chicken, but the chicken wasn't actually shredded and was too dry and hard without much flavor. The tortillas were also a bit too crispy. $22 for this was not a great deal. To drink, I got a Piña Colada, which was quite strong but pretty good. The service speed was super fast, and our waitress was friendly and attentive. The inside of the restaurant has dim lighting with a lively atmosphere, though it was a bit too loud for my liking. There is plenty of seating inside with some tables outside as well. We were able to be seated on a Saturday night for dinner without any wait. I would give Mole 3.5 stars overall, but if you follow my advice and get the Quesadillas rather than the Flautas Doradas and are interested in a large drinks menu, then I think you can have at least a 4 star experience.

Mia C.

Yelp
Super friendly staff! Margaritas are delicious best of all happy hour is everyday 12 to 7 chicken enchiladas were so flavorful along with the fully stuffed steak burrito! Don't forget to order their homemade chips with guacamole! Yummmm A go to spot for sure

Yelp
Good Mexican staples. The service has been good the last couple of times I have ate here. I prefer to dine outside as they have a beautiful street view. The pollo en mole is my go to. The other food items I have had have been good as well. The only problem I have is the drinks are too strong. Mainly in the sense that they are not properly balanced. They should take note from restaurants like Ofrenda. Drinks should be strong but the flavor should not be overtaken by the liquor.

Yelp
We went for lunch, and the place was surprisingly empty. Despite that, the food and service were great. I had the flautas. As it wasn't busy they let me try all 3 fillings. Delicious!

Yelp
Date of visit: 4/26/24, Time: 12:10pm My husband and I popped in for lunch at the Jane St location. We were seated immediately. Dining room was empty except for a family of 5 who entered just before us. Decor was pleasant and appropriately Mexican in theme, but the music that was playing in the dining room was in conflict with the Mexican theme. We each ordered a glass of wine (wines are not listed on the menu and there is no wine list - you just have to ask your server what they have). We later learned that a glass is $16. I had the Cheese Quesadilla with grilled chicken, and my husband had the Burrito Bowl with additional avocado. We received our food within 15 min of ordering, and everything was going well UNTIL we started smelling a STRONG odor of gasoline. My husband got up from the table to see if he could locate where it was coming from. He said the back door of the kitchen was open and he confirmed the strong odor of gasoline which he thought was car exhaust. Then he walked out the front door of the restaurant and he saw these guys pouring gasoline into a power washer (which they were using on the exterior of the restaurant building). He went back to use the restroom and saw there were water hoses extending outside from a door. The entire area was consumed in petroleum fumes and loud noise. By this time the entire dining room was filled with fumes and I was feeling ill. We asked our server (Pavoo N) to help us move to a table outdoors in front of the restaurant so we could finish our meal because it was such a toxic environment inside. Apparently this must be a regular activity that goes on there because our server didn't make any apology or attempt to stop the power washing. There was also no evidence of a senior manager to take charge of the situation.

Yelp
Excellent service, fantastic coffee. How special it was delicious. Fresh products with an excellent ambience.

Hannah S.

Yelp
Terrible service!!!!! They fully ignored my friends and I while taking orders from everyone else. They didn't give us menus for 20 minutes after we got there, forgot to give us the guacamole we ordered, and then proceeded to not give me a plate for my fajitas and ignore us for an hour during our meal while we tried to get their attention. I had to eat my fajitas from the paper they came in, with no water as they wouldn't come over to fill it. After all of that, we had to wait an hour for the check AND they charged us for the guacamole that never came. When we asked why our service was so poor in comparison to the rest of the customers, they ignored our complaints and didn't apologize. I've never once had an issue with poor service at a restaurant and this was a first, the food was good but I will not be coming back.

Yelp
I sent back my Carna Asada. The steak was half bloody, the other half was well done. The chef decided to put chopped raw onion on top instead of the charred baby onions as described. Second time - the steak was cooked better but still not flavorful. Everything else on the plate wasn't very hot, even the charred baby onions. The table behind me - 6 people - 2 sent back their dishes. Now I find out, a new chef not so long ago, and the waiter said "he's new and doesn't always make the dishes right". Not a good hire.

Yelp
I've never posted a restaurant review before, but after seeing so many negative reviews for this restaurant, and agreeing with the recent review posted by Nicolas D, I felt I should finally write one. I've been ordering delivery from Molé consistently for ~ the last year and a half, and they've never disappointed me. Food: My favorite on the menu is the Burrito Enchilado with sour cream and guac. The burrito is great and portions so huge I can eat it the one burrito for at least 3 meals comfortably. The enchilado sauce they smother it in is heavenly and the flavor perfectly balanced. The guacamole is everything a homemade guac should be. Tangy, fresh, and with nice chunks of fresh avocado. Drink: I've ordered their Aguas Frescas (hibiscus) multiple times and it's great. Very light and refreshing. Packaging: I've never had any issues with any of my items spilling. Everything is packaged with care. I can't speak on service, because I've never dined in person, but my orders have never been delayed due to the restaurant. *I grew up on the Western Slope which is known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, and this is the only place I've found that even comes close to the places from my hometown.

Danny C.

Yelp
Food was good, we had taquitos, ceviche, mexi corn, shrimp fajitas, steak fajitas and margaritas. Service was attentive and polite. Small inside but had a good vibe.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this restaurant while walking in the west village and so glad we stopped in for brunch. The food was seriously delicious -- we will definitely come back. The restaurant was fairly empty in the early afternoon but you likely need reservations for dinner. The guacamole was delicious. We also loved the steak and eggs and burrito bowl -- the meat on was well seasoned!

Yelp
It is on a corner and has sidewalk, covered patio and inside dining with a bar. There was a bit of a wait but once seated everything went smoothly and efficiently and pleasantly. I had the mole enchiladas with shredded chicken, very good! And my hubby had the 2 shredded beef tacos, also very good! We each had a beer to go along with it. Excellent mole sauce! Worthy the name!

Caryn M.

Yelp
Used to love this place. Terrible service from tall curly haired young guy who couldn't be bothered and made us feel like he was doing us a favor. Never came by unless we called him over. Then tells me he has no change and neither does the bar so I can leave a cash tip. Never again. Caliente Cab Co. is far better all around.

Yelp
Just wandering around nyc and found this restaurant, which offers a nice amount of outdoor seating. They have a large tent with open sides and luckily it was a not too cold night for eating outside during Covid. I love mexican food so was excited to try this place out. They have a variety of entrees to choose from, like tacos and enchiladas. The guacamole starter is delicious! I definitely recommend this if you are sharing with 1 or 2 people. The portions are very large here! I went with the tacos adobo but had no idea they would be so big. 3 large tacos come on the plate along with some beans and guacamole. I could barely finish 2 of the tacos! They were quite good though, especially the combination of savory meat with the sweet pineapple. If you come here I would suggest sharing a plate and getting an appetizer or two.
google avatar

Bilge E.

Yelp
t!! Don't come to this restaurant!!! Even if you still have a drink, they bring you the check right after you finish your food. The server wants you to leave!

Steve D.

Yelp
Outstanding drinks and menu, friendly efficient staff, terrific outdoor seating. 5 star experience
google avatar

Maliza H.

Yelp
I came into the restaurant today and I had 2 drinks and nachos, how is it that the nachos is $25 I feel like this restaurant is overpriced, I've been going to this restaurant for a while, Bill was $34 and the bartender tried to keep my money, until I had to ask him to give me my money, I should not have tipped him, I will not be back !!!!
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
This was our go to Mexican spot when we lived in the UES and we love this location as well (and let's just say I'm picky when it comes to Mexican). Takeout holds up well and arrives as delicious as emerging in restaurant! You must try their horchata, and I'm a huge fan of their enchiladas and, of course, chips and guac!
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
Got the mole enchiladas and the mole itself was excellent! I think the chicken was a bit dry and I ended up being glad that I asked for one of the enchiladas to be a cheese enchilada because that was the best combination in the end. Slow service even though they weren't busy (was a thursday night earlier on in the evening). Passionfruit marg was a hit, and pretty strong! I would go back for sure and still get the mole enchilada- but with cheese not chicken!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
For me, it's all about the fish tacos are Mole. Definitely get the flounder fried --- they come out golden brown and piping hot. It's so good. The plate is huge and big enough to share. It's represented as 3 tacos but there are 6 blue corn tortillas served with a ton of fish and overloaded with toppings of lettuce, pico de gallo and sliced avocado. The chipotle sauce is out of this world. Get the tres leches dessert if you want something sweet and still have room.
google avatar

Lucia F.

Yelp
I have had a lot of great Mexican food in my life (being Mexican myself) and this place was amazing: large portion sizes, lots of flavor, and kind, patient staff. They let us sit at the table we asked for and provided quick, efficient service, even speaking Spanish with me rather than English at my request. I got the Bistec a la Mexicana and it was heavenly; there is truly nothing I can say that will do justice to my love for this dish. My father got the Carne Asada and he loved it as well. It came with a cheese enchilada, which we absolutely devoured, and the look of bliss on his face when he ate my onions and jalapeños was almost comical. I truly cannot emphasize enough how delicious Móle's food is. 11/10 recommend!!
google avatar

Jon B.

Yelp
Came here with some friends for dinner in the Village. Cosy Mexican place ideal for sitting outside located in the corner. We started off with chips and guac which was quite good . After, I ordered quesadillas while they opted for more traditional meals as pictured. Drinks were old as well as the service as a whole . There are many options for Mexican around town and this one is pretty good !
google avatar

Eugene A.

Yelp
Nice little Mexican joint with a good selection of food and drinks. My wife and I ordered the chicken fajitas and a side corn on the cob. The corn was fantastic! The fajitas orders were huge. We both tapped out at half and order. We easily could have shared. On the positive side, we shared the left overs for lunch the next day in our own wraps. The chicken was seasoned perfectly and grilled to perfection. The peppers and onions were great as well. Lots of outside seating and really friendly service. Would happily return.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this spot walking around the village. Good drinks and food. We got there early and the manager gave us a 4 seater for two of us. Nice gesture. One of the better fajitas I've had. Guacamole is very good as well. The place filled up quickly after 7 or so on a Monday night.
google avatar

Nicholas D.

Yelp
Not sure why Mole has so much hate so I'm leaving this review to give some love to one of my favorite spots. I came here with a good friend for Sunday brunch last week and as always, Mole delivered an exceptional experience. I had the huevos rancheros which were excellent and my friend had the mole enchiladas which is the best item on the menu--I highly recommend the mole, it will change you. We both washed it down with delicious margaritas (with homemade tajin!!!) and it was even happy hour! The service is always on point and the staff is very friendly. In a city full of mediocre Mexican food, Mole stands out. I live in the area and it's one of my favorite spots, I have obligatory enchiladas at least every fortnight. Make haste and reserve your table today, you won't regret it!!
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Chile rellenos were good, but the rice and beans were cold, which kind of spoiled things. The last time I was here was about a year ago, and I remember having a better version of the same dish then.
google avatar

Carol V.

Yelp
We had the Ceviche and Guacamole to share and they were delicious. I ordered the mole enchiladas and that mole was one of the best I have had outside of Mexico.

Jason M.

Yelp
I thought it was the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten. Was rushed from the start. Cheap cuts of meat; mine was tough roadkill. So was my friend's food. Sloppy presentation. Was shocked that this was a Manhattan restaurant. Total disappointment. Don't go. Waste of money.
google avatar

Woody W.

Yelp
It's baffling why good or even decent Mexican is so difficult to find the city (Tacombi falls into this category too) and this place is no exception. Probably one of the worst margaritas I've ever had. Clueless staff who visibly have zero idea what they are doing. The food was pretty bad too. Over heard each table on either side of me say exactly the same complaints. Literally, go to Chipotle, it's honestly better than this dusty dump.
google avatar

Lindsey G.

Yelp
Quesadillas are quite delicious but don't eat it too fast you'll regret it! I do indeed Recommend
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Came on a Friday night with a large group of people. The staff were very accommodating but I think they were a little overwhelmed, as service was a little slow. Really enjoyed the guacamole, chips, and chicken quesadillas.

El R.

Yelp
Delicious food, generous portions, tasty margaritas--reasonably priced & made better by friendly, attentive service & a pleasant, neighborhood environment. Wjat more could you ask for? Enjoyed it so much we went back the following evening!

Ellen C.

Yelp
I've never posted a restaurant review before because I am in the business. And I understand how complicated the service industry can be. I just had a meal at Mole with friends. We ordered three Casamigos margaritas and were charged $5 extra for making the margarita using Casamigos. I understand an upcharge for using Casamigos. That was $2. That is totally fair. But I have never had an upcharge of $3 for physically making the margarita. That is a huge disservice to the customer. As well as as being unethical. Mole is a quaint Mexican restaurant. But I will never go back because of the upcharging policy. By the way, I have been a bartender for thirty years and have never upcharged my customers for making a specific drink. That is what is required of you as a bartender. Shame on you, Mole....
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Tonight it was beyond awful. my friend ordered two cheese enchiladas. They brought him 3 meat enchiladas in mole sauce. He told them he can't eat the meat and asked to get what he originally asked for. The waiter said it was his mistake. However, the kitchen said they would not remake the order. I asked the waiter "so I now have to find another place, in the village, on Halloween, so my friend can have dinner?". His response was "Yes. I'm sorry." No managers are ever on duty in the evenings, according to the waiter, so I wasn't able to properly ask for the correct order. The waiter said " I Know you come here all the time with multiple people. I'm sorry it worked out this way." Be careful what you order. If it's wrong, they will not fix it. Mole is now on my "not a chance in hell" list. I really can't believe they can stay in business with service like that. Awful!

Yelp
Waited almost 2hrs to be seated (by choice because we wanted a specific table) and man, what a waste of time. Not only is this the first restaurant I feel it is not following any of the social distancing guidelines but it is also not following cleaning guidelines at all. They're not sanitizing their menus or tables in any way that would make it safe for their customers. I was very disappointed because I thought this location was gonna be as good as the one in the UES, but not, drinks were not as good, food was ok and service was horrible. After waiting for almost two hours to get seated (again, by choice) the waiter took forever to come see us, and we had to go find someone to take our order. Even after he took the order, he took almost 20mins to bring us water, something that usually takes no more than 2mins if anything. It is a very disorganized location, not sure if it's because of what's going on, but I still don't think any of what I experienced is acceptable, specially the cleaning part. If you want to visit this place, I'd suggest you request sitting on the tables by the right side of the restaurant, unless, of course, you don't mind being right next to another party.

Cindy P.

Yelp
my family LOVED this restaurant. went last night and it was just so disappointing. we ordered nachos and honestly they were embarrassing. it looked like a 5 yr old made them. the quesadilla was just ok....very disappointing to lose a restaurant we loved

Yelp
Came in on a Sunday with a friend who lives in Chelsea. Mole takes up the corner spot on the street and is hard to miss. We were indecisive about where to eat, but the selection looked good so we popped in for a few bites. It was super hot out so we sat at the bar which was a sweet relief from the heat. The service was quick and friendly, and they didn't mess up our orders at all (I requested no dairy, and dairy-free is what they delivered. We ordered 3 dishes to split and left STUFFED - the sopes with spicy pork which was my favorite, the tamal Oaxaqueno with pork (super salty, would skip this), and the beef tacos. We also ordered 2 beers to wash it down, and the total bull was about $50 which wasn't bad at all. Would come back here again to try the Nopales and some other tacos.

Yelp
Awesome - just wanted a snack - ordered the queso fundido with poblano peppers - too much for one person but great choice - excellent location in the west village - not too noisy, quiet street. Sat outside.
