Phoenix’s 17 Iconic Dishes

"Mole is relatively easy to come by in Phoenix, but it’s a hard dish to do well. Often dry or overpowering, few restaurants capture the true essence of the sauce. Where better to be blessed by proper mole than a restaurant dedicated to traditional Oaxacan cuisine? A blend of over twenty ingredients, mole includes dried chilies, nuts, and spices with just a hint of chocolate, resulting in a dark, velvety sauce that balances sweetness with subtle heat. The dish is served over a tender quarter chicken and a dollop of rice." - Mcconnell Quinn

One of the best chef in the city runs this place. Creative cuisine mixing new and old. Always great flavours and smells coming from their open kitchen. Friendly staff too. Was primarily a breakfast/lunch place but now has started limited options dinners on weekend and they do homemade pasta. Had their Fettuccini carbonara with shrimps and friend had their lasagna. Both were amazing!!! It is more expensive than most popular places with locals but worth it. Only minus is the location as they are on the canal street so you may be seated at an outdoor table with cars/motorcycles going by and sometimes not the best smell. But the food and service makes up for these issues...

We’ve enjoyed their breakfasts . The mole chiliquiles and French toast are delicious . It’s a don’t miss in Zihua . We recently tried their dinner service . The beet salad and the evening special of lasagne were wonderful . We’ve spent a lot of time in Italy . The pasta and sauce was spot on . Well done. Don’t miss this gem of Zihuatanejo . We will be back often .

This is a great little restaurant away from the main tourist area. The French toast is amazing! Vegetarians will want to ask them to hold the bacon that isn't listed on the menu for the French toast. I also had the Huitlacoche omelette that was yummy but a little bland. My partner had the Enmolados which were good. I loved the service and the food will bring me back here for sure.

Mole Negro isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a love letter to great food and genuine hospitality. What began as a humble corner with two or three tables has blossomed into, in my humble opinion, one of the most unforgettable dining experiences you can have in Zihuatanejo. From fluffy breakfast omelets to perfectly al dente pasta, each item on the menu surprises and delights. This is culinary versatility at its best!!! But what truly sets Mole Negro apart is the warmth that surrounds you the moment you walk in. Chef Rodrigo Isaac Serna García backed by his brother & staff treat you like part of their familia. In a world where good customer service is the exception rather than the rule, here it’s nothing short of extraordinary. They remember your name, anticipate your needs, and take genuine joy in sharing their passion for food. Dining at Mole Negro feels like being wrapped in a hug: you’re not just eating, you’re part of a story that began with humble beginnings and has grown—table by table, smile by smile—into something truly special. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I wish this beautiful establishment every success for as long as they desire it, and I guarantee that your visit to Zihuatanejo will be richer, more flavorful, and infinitely more memorable with a meal at Mole Negro.

So glad we were told about this little gem. Edgar was so welcoming to his bistro cafe tucked in along the canal. The area is shaded and he offers umbrellas as well. The food was very tasty and there is a lot of options. They also have a good selection of drinks including smoothies cafe de olla and more. We will definitely be back.

A must-stop when in Zihua. The brûlée French toast was out-of-this world. Even the house drip coffee with cinnamon notes was fantastic. Friendly staff, English and Spanish speaking. Absolutely great spot. Go there.
