A Hong Kong Cafe Opens in Mira Mesa Bearing Milk Tea and Roast Meats | Eater San Diego

"I see it as Mira Mesa’s updated take on the Hong Kong cha chaan teng — a post–World War II cafe style heavily influenced by British culture and known for eclectic menus that fuse Cantonese staples with Western touches. Since touching down earlier this month, the small restaurant in the Mira Mesa Boulevard strip mall (the same plaza as SomiSomi and Pho Cow Cali) has already been drawing lines at peak meal times and is open daily for lunch and dinner. The menu features street snacks like curry fish balls; comfort plates including braised ribs in Coca-Cola sauce and stewed brisket with turnips; rice bowls topped with fried eggs and Cantonese roast meats such as duck and barbecue pork; and classic cha chaan teng drinks and sweets like Coke with lemon, yuenyeung (coffee with milk tea), pineapple (bolo) buns served with a slice of cold butter, and “Western toast” — a French toast–adjacent treat filled with condensed milk or peanut butter." - Candice Woo

My family went to this cozy place a lot, they serve really good food, especially the chicken , tender and tasty. My second favorite dish is fry rice noodles with shrimp, it’s absolutely delicious. The young waiter constantly provides warm , outstanding service and makes every visit even better.

This is our first time going to Mom Kitchen. We had the crispy roast duck, Hainanese chicken, beef chow fun, and sticky rice with sausage. All the dishes were tasty. However, the crispy roast duck was not as crispy as advertised—the skins were soft. The service was excellent, and our food came out promptly. At this restaurant, one can order food using the QR code on the table without waiting for the server to take the order.

I came on Friday night at 7pm, put my name on the waitlist that had 3 parties ahead and it took 35-40mins to get seated which is fine. There’s boba shop next door while waiting. I ordered the crispy roasted duck but after waiting 20 mins, the server came to tell me they’re out no more duck and asked to wait so that she need to check with the kitchen what they have before reorder anything else. She never came back or brought menu to order something else! Wasted 1 hour! The Hainanese rice chicken combo: the chicken and rice are so oily, LOTS OF OIL. It tasted bland no flavor at all, a ginger garlic sauce is also not anything special, the red sauce is sriracha. 1/10 Mom kitchen egg fried rice is decent, still oily. I like they have seaweed mix with it. The texture is good but the seasoning is bland. 5/10 Garlic water spinach is fresh and crunch, the garlic is mild. 7/10 The service is terrible, no customer service at all. The price is high in my opinion for the quality and service. Will I come back? Probably not during dinner time because it’s not worth the wait for just basic food. I might come back during off peak hour to try the roasted duck and sausage.

Came here for lunch and ordered the Mixed Roast Platter (BBQ Cha Siu and Hainan Chicken), Garlic Green Beans, and Beef Chow Fun for two people. Food was cooked very well, flavorful and not too salty or bland, and portions were large and generous! We were pretty full and still had a bit leftover to take home. Busy but no wait when we went during weekday lunch hours.

We came during the weekend and it was busy. We ordered the mix roast platter (with honey glazed bbq and Hainanese chicken), malay water spinach and the beef chow fun. The food was amazing. We will definitely be coming back to try more. Highly recommended!

4.25 stars ⭐️ Very willing to bump up my rating to a 5, but I wanted to address some inconsistencies with the food. On my first visit, I ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice and the Beef Noodle Soup. I was was a bit disappointed with the chicken rice because it came with plain white rice instead of the flavorful, garlicky rice I was expecting. However, on my second visit, our friends ordered the same dish, and theirs came with the proper chicken rice! There wasn't any mention of a substitution when I had ordered it, so I'm curious if it was an oversight the first time. If the rice issue is addressed, I'd be more than happy to up my rating. Food Ratings: Hainese Chicken Rice - 3.5/5 Again, totally down to up my rating if the rice is addressed. A huge part of what makes a good chicken rice is the RICE! Also wish the ginger sauce was a ginger scallion sauce. Beef Noodle Soup - 4/5 I thought it was decent, with a lot of radish in it (I love radish), but I thought the flavor of the broth was lacking a bit. BBQ Combination Rice - 4.5/5! Surprisingly VERY good! I really enjoyed both the BBQ cha siu and the roast duck. Thought the rice was a little hard (slightly undercooked?). But I would order this very thing next time I come back! The interior is absolutely gorgeous, the decor and dinnerware all match, and overall the service is really friendly!

Update review-It’s my second time eating Mom’s Kitchen, this time, I came with my girl friends. Since I had a newborn, so they come over my area to hangout. And they also wanna try this place out. We ordered something I really recommend from the last experience, including the Hainan Chicken and Roast duck, and the Chocolate milk bread. We also had one veggie dish. All of us really enjoyed the food. One of the girl’s husband is from Hong Kong, and she packed a Hainan chicken for him, he is really happy with it. I’ll come here in the future! I like here’s food! Previous review- We arrived at 5:30 and got one of the last tables. The place is small but popular. We tried the Hainan chicken, BBQ pork and roast duck rice, French toast, and a pineapple bun. The food was tasty—especially the French toast and roast duck—but prices are a bit high at $40 per person with tip. Service was quick, but some dishes could be more authentic. Would likely return with my husband!

Nice iced tea and pinapple bun. Feels like the bun is freshly baked - it is nice and warm. Very nice cozy atmosphere. Spicy wonton contains a lot of peanuts, FYI.

Yelp
Long wait, but didn't disappoint! First time having Hong Kong food, and gotta say, it was pretty good. Menu was simple but all the options looked solid. Got the beef chow fun. Delicious Food came quick and I will say that the combination platters my friends got looked really good. So many solid spots in Mira Mesa. Will definitely be taking my family here!

Yelp
I was craving some Chinese food and stumbled across Mom Kitchen. I didn't have time so I ordered takeout and here's my honest option of each dish I got. 1) Roasted Duck & Hainanese Chicken platter: The duck wasn't too crispy and was more on the fattier side. The chicken was cooked well but for both, flavor wise was slightly bland. 6.5/10 2) Black Pepper Sirlion: Out of everything I got, this was probably the best dish for me! Different textures from the veggies, flavors were exceptional and the beef itself was extremely tender that melts in your mouth. My only critique to the dish is, there's too much oil... 9/10 3) Fried Milk: Honestly not bad of a dessert. Crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. Pretty much milk curd that has been fried and they also give condense milk as a dipping sauce. 7/10 4) Salted Lemon Sever Up Drink: A pickled salted lemon that is squeezed into a cup and topped off with seven up soda. If you want something slightly sweet and salty then give this drink a try! 7/10 Overall, I don't think this place was bad nor was it super good. Some satisfaction and some little critiques. Overall experience: Food quality: 7.37/10 Service: N/A Ambiance: N/A

Yelp
The food here is absolutely outstanding and truly authentic. Every dish we tried was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Portions are generous, and everything has that homemade taste that shows real care in the cooking. What really stands out is the consistency--every visit has been just as excellent as the last. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food you get. This is hands down one of the best spots for authentic Chinese food, and it has quickly become one of my favorites.

Yelp
This restaurant is in my neighbor and I've been wanting to come here for a while. They seem to always have a long line out the door. I figured it must be really good for there to always be a line. My daughter and I finally made it here and the wait wasn't too bad, only 20 minutes on a Thursday evening. We ordered the following to share: spicy wonton, beef noodle soup, and beef stir fried noodles. Neither of us were particularly impressed with the food. The spicy wontons weren't remotely spicy, maybe a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10. It had a bit too much vinegar and not nearly enough chili. I was surprised to see peanuts in this dish, definitely not for those who have a peanut allergy! The beef noodle soup was just ok. I liked how the broth wasn't greasy, but it wasn't very flavorful either. What turned me off with this dish was the daikon were very bitter. Daikon is typically not bitter, unless they're old. These were extremely bitter, which tells me they were not fresh at all. They tasted a bit wilted. I did like the beef, which were very tender. The noodles were overcooked, a bit too soggy for my taste. I was looking for the bouncy chewy texture. The beef stir fry was ok. Again, the noodles were too soft, overcooked. It was a flavorful dish that would've been really good with different noodles. Service was average. We ordered with our phone using the QR code and a server came by to verify our order. The food came out pretty quickly. The restaurant was clean. I've had worse Chinese food, but then again, I've had better as well, so I wouldn't go out of my way to come back anytime soon. I was expecting higher quality, something that would make me feel as if I ate at in my own mom's kitchen. Maybe because the name Mom Kitchen, I was looking for something along the line of what my mom made...I didn't get that here....

Yelp
Decided to try this place out since the menu looked enticing!! I love how the menu online has photos of each item. My friend and I tried the bbq combination plate, sticky rice and sausage, and garlic green beans. The bbq combination plate was my favorite! I loved the runny egg in the middle and the bok choy. The sticky rice was a bit underwhelming and didn't have the sticky rice texture. I am glad I tried this place, but I probably wouldn't go back. It was a bit pricy for the quality. It was very clean inside and the food came out pretty quickly. It is still worth a try!

Yelp
Yum! We ordered the haianese chicken plate.. the chicken oil rice was yummy! Don't downplay haianese chicken, it looks simple and maybe odd -- but it's top notch (if you're into ginger)! Garlic green beans were a hit and so crunchy. Spicy wontons had a perfect hit of spice combined with sweetness. Clean, cute decor. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Gotta say - the service was fast, and the whole place was super clean. It was open on July 4th so I'm giving it 5 stars for it being open. The food was delicious, and the whole place got pretty full around lunch time. The duck is delicious!

Yelp
I'm disappointed to downgrade my rating. I had a good experience there the first time, but this second time it was such a struggle to get served. We ordered off the QR code, but when they brought our food they never removed the menus. They also didn't bring us the rice we ordered, so we had to ask for it and it was difficult to get someone's attention. Worst of all, I'm a pescatarian and ordered two items with shrimp and there wasn't any other mention of meat, but one of the dishes came with meat (probably bacon) in it. I confirmed with the server that it was meat but there was a bit of a language barrier to get to that point, so I'm not certain if it was bacon but my friend thought it definitely was and it looks like it. They never came by to check on us or refill our water. In fact, it was hard to even get someone to bring us the check so we could pay. We did get it eventually, and we put a card down but gave up and just went and paid at the counter (even though the table next to us had earlier paid at their table so I don't think paying at the counter was the expectation).

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, I really do... My family is from Hong Kong and we love the cuisine and food so much, but the experience and food we got from here was less than sub-par. I got the char-siu platter and the Hainanese chicken combo. I ordered takeout and noticed they didn't offer the char-siu and duck combo. No biggie, I'll just order the char-siu, and eat it with rice. But the char-siu we got was real, real dry. Like it's been dry for days old. It's a shame cause the flavor seemed kinda good, but just really old. Hainanese chicken was okay, but wasn't good enough that I'll come back for it again. Since it was a take-out order, I feel like their take-out orders are of abysmal quality vs dining in. Such a shame cause for the price point, it was really expensive for what it's worth. The only thing I really enjoyed was the Iced HK milk tea. I was really disappointed. I recommend heading down to Convoy for the more authentic HK cuisine instead.

Yelp
Mom Kitchen is busy in the evenings for a reason. Their portions are worth the price, service is quick and consistent, and bear ice molds are so cute. The interior is cozy but elegant, with one ADA table by the entrance and various 2-4 top tables. Food is cooked to order and brought out one at a time, so it may take a few extra minutes if they are busy. Their menu has variety - we enjoy their dim sum and stir fry items, as well as beef and duck options.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised with my experience here at Mom Kitchen! Very limited seating area so expect a wait if you come on the weekend. They mainly have 2 seaters so anything more will be long. I tried the BBQ combination with had duck, bbq pork, rice, fried egg, and bokchoy and it was insanely good!!! That big portion all for $19! Definitely recommend. Service was quick but the servers also do that so you can leave quicker for the next guests to be seated.

Yelp
3-star review is based on the most recent visit: Service was terrible today. It seems like they probably hired a summer intern? He (wearing black mask) really didn't know what he was doing. In the background, you can also hear both of the other employees scolding him. Why not give him proper training first or have him shadow before putting him out in the field. Or maybe they did do that and he is just not good. We didn't have a good time while dining in and we were waiting on a to-go order at the end. Upon checkout, that employee immediately selected the 18% tip option. My mom was a little surprised that he was the one that selected the tip. Since usually, the customer selects the tip or if we had a bigger party a tip would be added in automatically. This was the first time I see an employee select the tip himself. Keep in mind, we had takeout as one of our items and that is usually tipped at a lower rate. Typically, we don't mind and usually tip 18 to 25% (for good service), but the service was terrible that my mom selected the 15%. This is still standard since the total included the price of the takeout as well. But talk about tipflation! What made me even more speechless was, while were waiting for take out, that employee came up to us and was wondering why we were still sitting there, even though we paid already (kind of asking us to leave).... We said that we are waiting on the salt and pepper chicken takeout order that should be out soon. He said he didn't see it on our receipt. We were then very confused because we clearly saw it on our receipt when we paid earlier. Then the nicer employee came out with that to-go order and apologized about his behavior. When we first arrived, he also gave us water. One of the cups had gunk on it, so we kindly asked for a different cup. We also got fried rice, and there was a bug on top of it. We didn't make a big deal out of it and removed it ourselves. This server also wasn't very skilled at placing dishes on the tables without touching other things with his (not so clean) gloves. I literally saw him touch the trash with his gloves then use the same gloves to serve us our food. I lost my appetite. We got the beef and radish stew for the first time. Very different than what was pictured. It was extremely salty and the quality of the beef was terrible. I'm most shocked by the price because of the quality. The price does not justify the quality at all. It was mostly fat and surprisingly very difficult to chew. It was so bad that we had to ask for it togo since we feel bad throwing away meat. Will do something about it at home. Would I come here again? Not in the near future. I'm writing this review also to remind myself. I would also not recommend this place to other people anymore. 3-stars is already very generous. They only show exceptional service based off of the reviews you give them. I'm not asking for exceptional. I'll settle for average, but this is just below average. ------------------------ This was 5-star visit: My favorite dish here is still the malay water spinach. From my last review, they adjusted quickly and really took in the feedback. Water is filled ~80% now. The service was really sincere and chef Mao even came out a few times to check in on us and to explain what happened on our previous visit about the buns. Bathroom was clean. I would come here again. Service is nice. Food is good. Made fresh they said.

Yelp
Came on a random week day around 6 pm, there was a short wait of about 10 minutes. Here's what we got: Hainanese chicken plate: the full plate doesn't come with the rice. The meat itself was well cooked, they took out most of the bones so that was a nice touch. Ginger sauce was delicious but not proportionate to the platter, wish they included more. Malay water spinach: not a fan of this dish. It tasted a bit slimy and fishy. Unfortunately we couldn't eat much of it due to the texture/taste. Bbq platter: comes with roast duck, bbq chicken, one sunny side up egg and rice. I loved how the rice was semi covered in duck sauce (but again not enough, it only seeped through the top layer of the rice). The duck and bbq pork were so tender and perfectly flavored as well. Cons: it takes a while for each dish to come out. The water spinach came out first but it took maybe 20 minutes for each new dish to come out so we couldn't enjoy them together. Overall most of the food is fresh and flavorful, the waitress was attentive and nice, would come back to try the others!

Yelp
Wanted to eat here specifically for the peanut butter toast and damn that was sooooo good!!! I do order this to go occasionally- 5 stars for this dish alone The Hainanese chicken was bleh, I wouldn't order that again. The mixed bbq pork and duck rice bowl was good. I want to try other dishes but not sure I would want to sit down to eat. For one, sooo close to the other table and 2, when they clean anything they spray on the table next to you to clean , will also be sprayed on you, or your food. So that is why the 3 stars but do give them a try for yourself, esp the toast

Yelp
Wow, this is apparently the place to be. Arrived right when they opened on a Saturday and it didn't take long for the whole place to be packed. We had a bit of a large group so took up a corner of the restaurant. Because the restaurant filled up so quickly, it took them a little while to get around to take our order. The food also trickled in but they did end up forgetting one of our items. We got the curry fish balls as an appetizer. The flavor was good and it came with some chili oil which made it even better. I also ordered the curry pork chop rice but what came out wasn't quite what I expected. I didn't expect the pork chop to be fried / this seemed more like a katsu. Overall, the dish was pretty plain. We also ordered the Chinese sausage with sticky rice. Unfortunately, the sticky rice wasn't quite sticky. It wasn't cooked like how you would normally cook sticky rice. Overall, the dish lacked seasoning and the amount of shiitake was overpowering. For our drink the ying yeung was really good. Half hong kong milk tea and half coffee. To my delight, it even had a coffee/tea ice cube which is awesome and prevents a diluted drink. Our friends got the string beans which was fried perfectly and had excellent flavor. Unfortunately, they forgot the kids peanut butter toast and it took awhile for them to make it. The prices felt high for the food. The food was a mix of good and just ok. Nice to have a canto place in Mira Mesa though.

Yelp
Our group of 5 came for lunch on a Sunday afternoon around 1pm. We lucked out since there was no wait for a table. Parking is easy and a shared lot with other popular businesses (same shopping center as Best Pizza). We were greeting by the lovely staff where most wore masks. It was hard to understand what they were saying with the mask and it was somewhat loud in this small restaurant. The tables are close together so literally you are sitting next to your neighbors. Note: For parties 5 or more, there is an automatic 18% gratuity included on your bill. We ordered the following: -2 XLB (6pcs) $12ea -Crispy Roast Duck (half order) $25 -Beef Chow Fun $17 -Honey Glazed Pork BBQ $16 -Garlic Water Spinach $16 -Beef Fried Noodles $16 -Black Pepper Sirloin $17 -Black Gold Lava Bun (3pcs) $8 Everything we had was amazing! The portions are small but we ordered enough to be full. Our favorites were the duck, pork bbq, and the beef chow fun. A couple of us ordered the fruit teas and they enjoyed the drinks. The ice shaped as a bear was really cute. It was $200 well spent for us and we would come back or order take out next time! Keep in mind their business hours as they close in between lunch and dinner for the staff to break and have their linner.

Yelp
Bomb bomb bomb! Mom's is so so good. We came in on a Sunday around 1pm, and our party of five slipped in without having to wait. Much better than trying to go to some of the other hotspots on this shopping center! We ordered it all. Meats, noodles, dim sum, bear teas... nothing let us down. All excellent. The standouts are the Duck and pork. So flavorful and perfectly cooked. Really impressed with the food all around & look forward to returning. Service was fast & efficient too. Heads up they close between lunch and dinner, so budget time accordingly!

Yelp
This place really exceeded my expectations! For Chinese food in San Diego this place is not bad at all. It's very clean inside and the service is quick and to the point. The roast duck is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. The beef noodle soup broth is well balanced and not greasy at all. Can't wait to try more things on the menu next time :)

Yelp
This used to be where Valerio's used to be. Service is not as great. Had to ask for water refill. Foodwise, it's pretty decent. The chicken wings were the star of the dinner. It was very good. The mix roast platter was delicious. The duck was cooked perfectly. The curry pork chop rice was not bad. Would I go here again? Yes. I would love to try other dishes

Yelp
Our friends invited us to this place for lunch and we came for the first time. According to the staff the restaurant was opened last September. That explained the furnishings looked pretty new and clean. Food was authentic and fresh. The service staff were very friendly and efficient. We would definitely visit again!

Yelp
I've been meaning to leave a review since we tried this spot a few months ago. We were so impressed by the food. Everything tasted homemade (lives up to the name), not overly seasoned at all, the portions were great and the ingredients were fresh. Our order included: - crispy cucumber salad - good but not a must-order - Hainanese chicken - my favorite dish; so tender and perfectly salted. The best I've ever had. - brisket and radish - chefs kiss, this dish was made to perfection - egg fried rice - DELICIOUS - Malay water spinach - can't go wrong with these I'd come back to try the other items on the menu. Service was solid. The wait to be seated was long, but we came on a Friday evening and they recently had opened, so that was expected.

Yelp
Highlight: Hainanese Chicken Rice, Salt & Pepper Wings, Black Gold Lava Bun, Ovaltine-Milk Lava Toast Hainanese chicken was super tender. The rice and cucumbers were a bit dry but overall the taste is good. Salt & pepper wings were nice, crispy, and flavorful. The lava bun had a uniquely savory flavor from the egg yolk that I liked and the bun itself is soft and fluffy. Wasn't the biggest fan of the lava toast and it wasn't too sweet. It had a crunchy crumbly outside texture and a more hardened yogurt texture on the inside. Hospitality: Fast and attentive service. Honorable Mention: The restaurant is a bit small but gave an overall intimate feeling.

Yelp
I loved this spot a ton! My friend suggested it to me, said it was a really good home cooked feel, and I agree!! It really hit the spot on a cold night and I definitely recommend this to anyone craving a good Chinese meal. Located in Mira Mesa, it has a decent parking lot, but there's a couple of other popular spots in that center so you may fight for parking depending on what time you go. You check in outside and wait until they call you. Seating is there, but it's not the biggest spot, so you most likely will be waiting for a bit, but I thought the wait went by fast! The place itself is really clean! Service was pretty good. The way they have their system set up, it's pretty minimal contact with the staff but that's okay. You order off the QR code on the table from your phone. The staff will bring the food to you. There's constantly staff on the floor refilling water and making sure you're okay, so that's good! Food was really, homey. I had the pork curry rice, and it was so good! I like that the curry was light. What I really liked that the pork wasn't thick, oily and the breading was just right. The chow fun was really good too! Not too oily and the flavors were really good! I will definitely be back! There's so much more on the menu that I wanted to try. I highly highly suggest this spot! Their prices are really good too! I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Really enjoyed our dinner at Mom Kitchen. Although we had to wait around 20-30 minutes, it was worth the wait. I didn't mind waiting if the food is good. Based on some Yelp reviews, the duck is worth a try. I don't really like duck since it has a little fishy taste to me when eating by itself. I've had duck before at another restaurant but with a ban bao and plum sauce which I didn't mind. We tried to order duck at this restaurant but they were out so the waitress recommended the combo barbecue pork and duck with rice. So yummy ....and didn't know duck could be this good by itself and no fishy taste at all!!! I will definitely order it again when we return....then I asked for another recommendation and she said black pepper sirloin which we enjoyed as well. Also had crispy cucumber salad and pork and shrimp siomai. Hubby had to try the lemon coke. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you want good HongKong inspired food!

Yelp
Located in a medium size complex with several other restaurants, there are plenty of parking. It is a small restaurant but very clean and pretty busy for a Friday lunch around 1pm. We were promptly seated and given water and a physical menu. The online QR menu has photos and you will order directly using the phone so the physical menu was not really necessary. Also, I noticed that the price for the sirloin & radish (listed as beef and radish on the physical menu) were priced differently. On the physical menu it was $18 while online it was $16. They did charge it as $16 so there wasn't a problem but just in case, go with the price listed on the online menu. Food came out really fast; within 5 minutes of ordering. The sirloin and radish dish does not come with rice so be sure to order rice ($1.50) if you are not ordering another rice or noodles dish. The beef was super tender and the sauce (which was no overly salty) went amazingly well with the Jasmine rice we ordered on the side. The radish felt a little undercooked (slightly hard and has not soaked in the sauce yet) but was still delicious. Their pork from the BBQ combination dish was good but their roast duck was amazing. The skin was super crunchy and the meat was juicy! The kumquat iced tea was really refreshing and had the perfect sweetness. The bear was an added fun. It does give you that extra amount of tea you could take home so I think the $1 was worth it. There were two staff working the hall and about 4 working in the kitchen which is why the food probably came out so quickly. The hall staff were super attentive and noticed when we needed help (one of our cup was leaking). They will bring the bill to the table and you could take it up to the counter when you are ready to pay.

Yelp
Wow this place was packed for dinner on a Friday night. But service was still awesome & all the food came out very quickly once you submit your order online with the QR code. The tables are very close together, but thankfully we got a spot in the corner so we didn't have to sit too close next to anyone. We ordered a bunch of things & thought everything was delicious. My favorites to least was: Mix roast platter: both the crispy duck & honey glaze bbq was delicious. The duck skin crispy, and the glaze on the pork addicting. Mom special fried rice: loved the flavors in this. Simple, but flavorful & delicious. I enjoyed the sesame & seaweed flavors. Peanut butter toast: my hubby & I loved the light buttered toast with condensed milk & peanut butter. So good. Mango pomelo sago: I've seen many reviews complaining it barely had fruit and sago, but thankfully ours had a lot. Not too sweet. Sweet dumplings: I was expecting this to be sweeter. But it really wasn't that sweet at all. But I still enjoyed it a ton. Salt & pepper wings: it was very crispy & yummy. But the seasonings were very light & they only give you 6 extremely tiny wings. Hainanese chicken: very moist & perfectly cooked boneless chicken We loved the ginger sauce, & the spicy sauce has a nice mild kick. Not the best I've tried. The best Hainanese chicken I tried was in downtown China town in Boston, Massachusetts. The one in Boston had a yummy soy brown sauce that complimented the ginger dipping oil. Overall a great experience & we'll be back to crave the mix platter, mom fried rice, & peanut butter toast.

Yelp
LOVE Mom Kitchen. The only "Hong Kong" Milk Tea outside of Hong Kong. This is one of our go to Chinese restaurants. My favorite is their Hainan Chicken Rice, Egg Custard Bao, Of course their Milk Tea. Hubby's favorite is the BBQ Pork and Roast Duck Rice w/egg! It's a small clean atmosphere and servers are attentive. You won't be disappointment!!

Yelp
I've been twice in one week specifically for their boneless Hainan chicken. The location feels new, clean, and well staffed. It's not a huge place so tables are close together and gets busy during peak hours. You order from a QR code but they also have a laminated menu (no food pics). I actually ran into my sis and cousin who sat down at the table next to me! So we shared a huge lunch which made for more pics to post for this review :) We tried: Hainan half chicken: - this was the a la carte and a good portion with no bones. The skin and meat of the chicken are divine. The ginger scallion sauce is flavorful, oily, and heaven. Crispy roast duck: - my sis is obsessed with this dish. The duck is juicy and not dried out. Crispy Cucumber salad: - soggy Garlic green beans: - SO good. Dare I say Din Tai Fung quality-good. The beans tasted fresh and not stringy. Beef Chow Fun $18: - we hoped for a bigger portion for the price. Noodles were woked well . BBQ Rice combo $18: - we got the roast pork and roast duck. Rice was topped with a beautiful fried egg and some steamed bok choy. I didn't like the roast pork but just preferred the duck and Hainan chicken Sticky rice & sausage $18: - pass as this dish didn't taste like sticky rice at all. There wasn't very much sausage. It was mostly packed fried rice. Pan fried pork dumplings $14: - pork filling wasn't very good. The dumpling skins were pan fried nicely but we wouldn't order this again Xiao long bao $12 - bad. Pork filling was mediocre and the soup wasn't savory or plentiful. The XLB dough was too thick. Black gold lava bun $8: - freshly steamed and delicious! The buns were fluffy with a nice pull . The wonderfully runny yolk filling was scrumptious and addicting. Service has always been amazing on each visit. They are glad to help you order and give you their opinions about certain dishes. Waters and hot tea are constantly refilled and no one rushes your meal.

Yelp
While a tad pricey, we loved everything we ordered!! Finally, the perfect, homey, Chinese place has opened up in Mira Mesa. The food came out quickly, hot and fresh. The space is quaint and might be hard to host large parties/ gatherings. We brought our baby with us and they had a high chair which was great!! Tip: ask for extra hainan chicken sauce. The ginger sauce is excellent!!'

Yelp
So happy that a HK style restaurant opened, funny that the employees all speak Mandarin instead of Cantonese tho. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ As far as the food goes, it was tasty/flavorful. Portions are small especially for the price. Disappointed in the mango pomelo sago dessert. There was not nearly enough sago in it. And barely any mango or pomelo. For $9, I def expected more inside. Staff was friendly, space is definitely cramped. This restaurant is best for seating tables of 4 or less. If you come with a bigger party during peak dinner hours, you'll probably have to wait. We got here right before 530 and got seated right away. However, after 530, there was a line. Please note that they're closed on Mondays!

Yelp
It's my second time eating Mom's Kitchen, this time, I came with my girl friends. Since I had a newborn, so they come over my area to hangout. And they also wanna try this place out. We ordered something I really recommend from the last experience, including the Hainan Chicken and Roast duck, and the Chocolate milk bread. We also had one veggie dish. All of us really enjoyed the food. One of the girl's husband is from Hong Kong, and she packed a Hainan chicken for him, he is really happy with it. I'll come here in the future! I like here's food!

Yelp
Delicious and authentic! I came back twice in one month because it's so hard to find genuine Hong Kong style Chinese food in San Diego. Many try, but fall short especially when it comes to the cha siu pork BBQ or roast duck. I love that they feature both cha siu and roast duck in one fabulous rice bowl complete with a fried egg and a couple of bok choy. I highly recommend getting this if it's your first time. The roast duck is mouthwateringly fat, the cha siu seems to be on the leaner side so it's a nice balance. I always get the hoi lam gai fan (Hainanese cold ginger chicken). They do an amazing job - the flavor is perfect, the chicken always tender and smooth, with an incredible homemade ginger scallion sauce. What to skip: - curry fish balls: slightly soggy and overboiled. The curry also lacks that rich in your face flavor you'd expect from the typical street food vendors it originates from. - ovaltine milk lava toast: it's definitely an Insta-trap; once you cut it open, milk pours out for an impressive visual feature but the toast itself could be better. It gets soggy fast too. Both of the above dishes are made of very cheap ingredients, and at $10 each, I feel you could be spending it on something better. Definitely get: - iced lemon tea: very strong and sweet, as it should be. - xiao long bao: they use a different wrapping here that's chewier and thicker than the typical fragile thin wrap, and I'm into it. I also feel that the dumpling runs a little sweeter here, which is quite nice! - beef chow fun: incredible smoky flavor, perfect amount of vegetables and ingredients - very authentic. For "street" or "cafe" food, definitely expect to spend 30% more than what you'd pay in Hong Kong for this type of casual dining food. But it truly is the real deal.

Yelp
Wow this place is really good. One of the best places I've been lately. The restaurant is small so there might be a wait but worth the wait. The food was fresh, quick & flavorful. Lots of food to choose from. Definitely looking forward to coming back and trying something different on their menu.

Yelp
First time here and we waited 30 minutes Friday night. Was worth the wait, the food was very flavorful and tasty. The food was fresh, hot and came out quick. There is a lot of choice to choose from. I also like that it is a Hong Kong style food. The service was good. The restaurant was small but very clean and bright. Will definitely be coming back to try other things on the menu.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday around 6pm and we were seated quickly. The 2 of us shared an order of the beef chow fun and xiao long bao. Both were flavorful and the XLB was hot and juicy, filled with soup. Overall solid Cantonese food spot. I would come back to try their other dishes!

Yelp
Overall would defs come back! The little restaurant has a good vibe to it with cute plates & decor. The service is pretty fast and it's easy to get their attention if needed. The food was also really good! Hong Kong milk tea: 10/10 (good strong tea that wasn't too sweet) Hainan chicken: 7.5/10 (it was kind of lacking flavor and felt like the sauce was okay) Beef chow fun: 10/10 (the best I've had) Spicy dumplings 10/10 (really juicy! Has a peanut & vinegar sauce to it with hot sauce on the side) Lava buns: 10/10 my bf loved them a lot! But personally I wasn't a huge fan of the egg taste, 6/10. But it wasn't too sweet & the buns were reallly soft

Yelp
I am happy that a Hong Kong cafe opened up in Mira Mesa! The interior of the restaurant is cute and cozy with a minimal menu. My overall experience was good but I can't say it's the best hong kong cafe style food I've had. I was hoping the restaurant would be comparable to the ones in SGV with the baked pasta dishes and more soup options but Mom Kitchen has more dim sum like dishes and delicious teas. We ordered the pineapple bun that comes with a slice of butter, hong kong milk tea, hainanese chicken combo, black pepper sirloin, and spicy wontons. My favorite item was the pineapple bun and black pepper sirloin. The pineapple bun comes fresh&warm so it pairs well with the slice of butter. That was served first with my milk tea. I can tell they use quality tea because of how rich in color the milk tea is and how fragrant it tastes. It's perfect if you don't like your drinks too sweet because you can sweeten it yourself with the side of condensed milk. The black pepper sirloin had a well-balanced flavor (not too salty) and the meat was cooked well but I wish it had more of the black pepper kick. Regarding the Hainanese Chicken combo, the chicken and ginger sauce is were good but the rice and cucumber garnish were just ok. The cucumbers were a bit dry and the rice isn't like the traditional Hainan chicken rice where it's flavored. It's more of a stickier white rice texture. If you're looking for the traditional Taiwanese spicy wontons, these are different! There is a lot of peanut sauce so it makes the dish sweeter and creamier. The wonton wrappers are very thick and broke apart easily--I wouldn't get them again. Restaurant was clean and staff were nice. The plaza does get busy during dinner hours but parking is manageable! I would recommend getting their teas and dim sum dishes over their other items!

Yelp
What can I say my parents coworker had recommended Mom kitchen as his favorite restaurant in all of San Diego. I had also followed awaiting their opening on Instagram after viewing the ovaltine toast. Finally got the chance to visit, and it exceeded my expectations! It was absolutely delicious!! Our group of 3 got there right after their break and they got us a table and orders in right away. The staff are very sweet and attentive, checking waters and friendly service. It's a smaller space, but really warm and pleasant. Not fancy but not super casual. I liked the atmosphere. Their food/drink presentation is really fantastic! We ordered - BBQ mix Rice Bowl - BBQ pork platter - Malay Water Spinach - Xiao Long Bao - Honk King Milk Tea This was just the right amount with a small leftover container. All of it was superb. Keep in mind it's more of a "share" plate style in my opinion and portions were pretty good for the price. The duck was fantastic, and crispy skin. The BBQ pork surprised me as my favorite, and the water spinach was really tasty. Xiao long bao were hot and fresh and really good. A little different flavor than others I've had before. The Hong Kong tea was - VERY good, probably the best and closest to authentic I've found. Overall great experience and will definitely be back!

Yelp
Dishes we loved: 1) hainanese chicken- legit! Flavorful chicken with cool bouncy skin. Comes with minced ginger oil like it should. Also comes with a spicy sauce... a bit unusual. Most of it is boneless, except for wing and leg 2) hong kong milk tea- not sure why it came bubbly at first. Maybe they mixed it with a machine? But the flavor is rich in tea and very creamy like it should be. Dishes that need improvement 3) beef chow fun- Not particularly stand out. Lacks wok hei. Portion size smaller than other places too. 4) garlic green beans- also lack wok hei. Almost tastes like they blanched it first and then stir fried it, rather than quickly frying it in oil first. There are other places that make a better one. Other dishes we ordered that were just ok: 5) pickle cucumbers (called crisp cucumber salad on menu) - very refreshing and slightly spicy 6) beef pan fried dumplings-very juicy with crispy bottoms. Again there are other places who make a better equivalent 7) spicy wontons- they are ok, as expected. This is not really a hong kong style cafe (cha chaan teng), more like a mixed chinese casual diner with a pretty limited menu. While they have many categories of foods, options in each are pretty limited. Not too many options on vegetable dishes either. Service: fast ordering and serves dishes quickly, but very slow to present the bill. There's a line waiting outside, so it would only help themselves to allow us to pay and get out sooner. The bill came out $110 for 7 dishes, serving 4 people I would come back if I crave the hainanese chicken, but there are not too many other stand out dishes.

Yelp
Was in the area with the bf. Came to Mom's Kitchen for lunch, and the food really hit the spot. Everything we ordered was solid: Noodles - Super flavorful and well-cooked with just the right amount of sauce. Definitely a must-get. Pineapple bun - Fresh and buttery, but that big slab of cold butter was just so good Hainan chicken - So tender and juicy, paired perfectly with the ginger sauce. BBQ platter - The char siu and roast duck were so good, especially over rice with that egg. However the service was a total letdown. The staff seemed disorganized, and everything came out so painfully slow. At one point, I was wondering if they forgot about us. If you can overlook the wait, the food makes it worth it. Just don't come starving, and maybe bring a little patience.

Yelp
3.5/5 New HK style cafe in Mira mesa! It's always super packed when I go, even around opening time. I am excited that we finally have this type of food in SD. Can't say I'm overly impressed in comparison to the ones in LA, but a good start! Food is decent, some things are better than others. - Shrimp & pork wontons: I would get this again! Very umami & better than other places I've tried with this dish in North SD - BBQ rice- cha siu and roast duck were delicious! Definitely more in the pricier side though considering half of the bowl is just rice. A good thing to order if it's your first time here though. - Beef Chow fun: this was just ok. Not very flavorful and beef didn't taste fresh. Skip this - fried Chicken wings: yummy light batter! I prefer a thicker batter, but if you like thin - this is for you - Hainan chicken: Chicken was tasty, there were a few sauces included to dip. I was disappointed that the rice wasn't hainan style rice.. was just plain rice. I keep trying to come back to try their Hong Kong milk tea but they never seem to have this available ): Located next to Gong Cha in the Somi somi/Pho cow cali plaza, plenty of parking!

Yelp
I was so excited to hear a Hong Kong restaurant was opening up, and after seeing a few photos and media posts surrounding their offerings, I knew I had to come give Mom Kitchen a try! - PARKING - Located in a busy plaza in Mira Mesa, right next to Pho Cow Cali. There are many parking spaces, but you might end up parking further away during peak meal hours. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Paper waitlist at the front of the door! The restaurant is not big at all, so I would be wary coming with more than 4 people. They did have one big party of 8 eating inside when we arrived, but they must've come earlier on to be able to grab that large of a space. I would highly recommend looking at the menu beforehand if you can, so you know exactly what to order once you sit down. They have QR codes on the tables where you can directly order off your phone - however, some tables still opted to order with the waiter. Once we ordered, it took only around 5-10 minutes for our first dish to come out. The other dishes came out in 5 minute increments. - FOOD - Beef Chow Fun ($17.00): A classic dish, and a favorite amongst our friend group. The flavors were there, but I did wish there was more wok-hei to the noodles. The beef was nicely cooked, not tough at all! I also think the price is a bit much for the portion we were given. XO Shrimp Silver Noodle ($17.00): Super fun to eat these noodles! You don't see them often, but they give an interesting mouth feel. Flavor was good again, but wish there was more XO sauce. The shrimps were bouncy! Price was again a bit high for the portion. Pork Soup Dumplings (6pc - $12.00): From a first hand look, the dumplings didn't seem like they had much soup inside. We were definitely proven wrong after we bit into them and poured out a good amount of soup! The wrapper was a bit thick at the top though. I'm happy to see red vinegar was offered here as that's not a common thing either! Pan Fried Dumpling Combo (9pcs - $15.00): Love this option to get 3 different kinds of dumplings - veggie, beef and pork. We all liked the pork the most, but all of the options were delicious. The beef and pork dumplings also had juice inside of them! Peanut Butter Toast ($10.00): Condensed milk and butter slathered over toast!! One of my favorite dishes, but this version here at Mom Kitchen had cheese inside of it?? I didn't like the addition, but one of my friends did. - OVERALL - A solid spot for Hong Kong classic dishes, but just at a higher price point than I'd like. If their prices were lower, or their portion sizes were larger, I might come back more often. Otherwise I just hope more Hong Kong restaurants open up in San Diego!

Yelp
MomKitchen is a clean, family-friendly Hong Kong-style restaurant with a simple setting and soft pop music in the background. It's a straightforward spot for casual Asian food. We ordered the garlic water spinach, Hainanese chicken, beef egg noodles, and xiaolongbao. The spinach came out quickly, while the other dishes took a bit longer. The Hainanese chicken was the standout--boneless, tender, and nicely presented. White rice is extra, which adds up. The xiaolongbao had a decent filling but a slightly dry bottom, and the noodles were just average. Portions were a bit on the small side, and overall, the pricing felt a little high for the type and size of the dishes. MomKitchen isn't a must-visit, but it's a fine option if you're nearby and craving something simple--just be prepared to pay a bit more than expected.

Yelp
I don't get the hype of this place. Bland food. Dumplings and green beans were the best. Good portion of the pork bbq. Duck was small and not too much meat. Prices were in line with what's expected..... $132 for 4, plus tip.... No beer or wine allowed on premise.

Yelp
My friend and I came to Check out Mom Kitchen in hopes to find good chicken rice. We got there just before the rush and didn't have to wait. We ordered Chicken rice, beef chow fun, and the Teddy bear fruit tea and lemon tea. The tea drinks were good and the teddy bear ice cube was made in a process so that it hardly melts. It took a while to get the drinks. The chicken rice is just ok but the beef chow fun was good. The place is small but seats a lot of people. Overall it's a good addition to Mira Mesa.

Yelp
Pretty and clean restaurant. Food is good. Service is so so! Xiao long bao 8/10. Some pieces were dry inside, some were juicy! Roasted duck and bbq pork: 6/10. Duck was dry, Bbq was good Hainanese chicken: 8/10. Chick still had some hair on it but was tender and juicy. Pickle Cucumber: 10/10 well seasoned. They never checked on us, hard to grab anyone attention, we had to ask multiple times for our water to be filled. Probably gonna ord takeout nxt time so we can skip the service n the tip.

Yelp
3.5 stars but I'm rounding up because Hong Kong style food is non-existent in San Diego and I want them to stay. They seem to brand themselves as a Hong Kong cha chan teng 茶餐廳 (cafe) but their menu is a little mix of everything. I would love to see them offer items in the future like baked pork chop rice 焗豬扒飯 spaghetti bolognese 肉醬意粉 spam and egg sandwich 餐蛋治 etc. Came here on a Friday night and waited for around 15 mins for a table for 2. Would not recommend for groups larger than 4 because the space is small and you will wait a while. Ambiance is clean and bright. Service was pretty much what you expect - fast and no bs. Order via QR code on the table and our food came out super quick. FOOD: - BBQ Pork and Duck Rice: 3.5/5 Larger portion than I expected. Flavor of the chasiu is good but the meat was too lean, not half lean half fat like good chasiu. Duck is decent (ask for the sauce!) and had good flavor. - Beef Chow Fun: 4/5 Solid dish and it can't go wrong. Flavor was great and beef was tender. They give you a good amount of beef as well, which was nice. Only complaint is that the portion was relatively small and seems pricey for $18. - Pineapple Bun with Butter: 2/5 I knew this wasn't authentic looking at the photos but I still had to try. The bun looks more like what you will see at 85C (Taiwanese style bolo bao) and not authentic Hong Kong bakery style. The texture was not soft and fluffy enough but the taste is okay. - Iced Milk Tea: 4/5 It's super difficult to find Hong Kong milk tea around here so I love that they have this. Flavor was pretty close, the strength of the tea was slightly lacking. They use condensed milk instead of evaporated milk, which technically is 茶走 (a variation of HK milk tea) but it's still pretty good. Only complaint is you need to add $1 for the iced version so it comes out to $7, which is a little steep. - Iced Lemon Tea (not teddy bear version): 2/5 Tea flavor is lacking and the whole cup was just ice and lots of lemon, not sweet enough (maybe they can offer a side of syrup next time). Great to see Hong Kong food being represented in San Diego. Hopefully they can continue to improve and expand their menu!
