15 Sushi Happy Hours to Try Now | Eater DC

"Every weekday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. cocktails can be had for $5 and beer costs less than $4. Those drinks wash down the discounted specialty rolls ($9). There are some small plates on special, too." - Missy Frederick

Google
The fish quality was really poor. Tuna completely inedible, yellow tail not good, and salmon okay at best. Was expecting a nice sit down meal but got the opposite as it is not mentioned on their website that the place has been takeout only since Covid. Would recommend you go elsewhere and not waste your money.

Watashi no Musume "my daughter" knows how much of a foodie her mom is and knows how I love great sushi! She works nearby and asked if I'd like to try the sushi at Momiji.... Yes! Please! It was ❤️ at 1st bite!!! It was / IS So Good!!! So now, every now and then, she'll bring me home the Sushi & Sashimi Lunch w/a side of Sushi Rice. I haven't had the honor of dining in, but enjoy it nonetheless! #Meshiagare

Google
Absolutely love this place! The lunch 13 piece sashimi special is impressive nice big slices of fish my favourite take out spot on the Eaat Coast!

Google
Ordered take-out on the Fourth of July and the food was a not too long wait and good quality. I loved the sushi meal with miso soup

Google
It was so good I was licking the sauce off the box! Very sweet staff!

Google
I really enjoyed the food, but the place to order & pick up wasn't a pleasant atmosphere. While I ordered and waited by the door, I got tons of bites from unknown insects & there were a lot of people hanging around the area that made me uncomfortable. Food wise, I ordered the Happy Santa roll, Mackey, & peanut & avocado rolls. I enjoyed them all. I also got edamame & shrimp Udon soup noodles. Tasty! I'd likely order online or via a delivery service next time. Service was very polite, patient, & friendly.

Google
We order from Momiji almost every week. We love their rolls and after years of ordering from here, we can confidently say that they are so consistent. Week after week, we get same delicious sushi rolls that we love. This is a neighborhood gem.

Google
I came 2 years ago to DC and found this place. Now that I came back for 3 days, I had all my meals there. That is how much I liked it. Rolls are filled with fish rather than too much rice. Perfect ratio. The Capital roll was my favorite: filled with 4 types of fish and covered in avocado and eel. Delicious. Will be back when I'm in DC again and will definitely recommend to anyone that likes sushi. Service is very fast. The temperature is cold but I guess that is good for the fish, so bring a jacket if you need to.

Yelp
This is my go-to takeout sushi spot--the price and quality are truly unbeatable! I usually order the spicy tuna roll, and when I get it through Uber Eats, they often have a buy-one-get-one-free deal on dumplings, which are always delicious. They also offer a great lunch special (though I haven't tried it yet), which just goes to show how affordable the menu is overall. The fish is consistently fresh, and after trying many different sushi takeout places in DC, this one is the clear winner for me.

Yelp
I was looking for a place to eat near my hotel and came across this place. I wish I had read reviews, since this place only offers takeout now, but that didn't stop me after walking in the cold! The nice lady that was distributing orders allowed me to order in person, since I saw a sign that had a number to call for orders, or just order via a delivery app. I ordered the Special Roll Dinner and Vegetable Tempura and miso soups for both entrees. Special Roll Dinner It consisted of the specialty Dragon, Rainbow, & Dynamite rolls. They were quite good, tasted fresh and needed little to no soy sauce. I especially liked the roll in the middle row (I think it's the Dragon roll) Veggie Tempura I couldn't tell you the exact veggies, but it was broccoli, eggplant, zucchini, sweet potato, taro (?), and some half moon shaped veggie. With the exception of the zucchini and eggplant (they were mushy), they were good! Nice and light, not too oily. Miso soup (came with entrees) I was looking forward to the miso soup since it's cold and wanted something hot. It was pretty bland, I didn't taste much. I enjoyed the food that I ordered, I'd definitely swing by again, especially if they were to open for dine in!

Yelp
They are not open for dine in but our team at work loves their lunch take outs. I got a steak hibachi lunch bento and it was delicious. I had left overs given the large portion but it was also saltier than what I preferred.

Yelp
Momiji is very solid for what they are. This is by no means high end sushi. For takeout/delivery the prices are fair, the portions are on the larger side, the packaging is good and they are fast. They are delivering on their mission. The menu is diverse beyond sushi (I can only speak to the sushi at this point) but it delivered on all my expectations.
google avatar

Yelp
(This review is for takeout only) Decently priced, convenient sushi. Momiji has most of your classics covered, and the portions / sizes are great for either a quick lunch or light dinner. I typically order takeout or delivery from UberEats, and it generally arrives to the Farragut / McPherson area within 15-30 minutes (unless we have an order for over 10 people, in which case it takes about 45). Their menu features all the classic combos, so it's a great pick if you just want a simple, standard meal of sushi and aren't looking for anything too fancy. It's a bit of an odd gripe, but I'm not a huge fan of their sashimi; I'm not sure if they're cutting the pieces a bit too thick / large (a wild complaint, I know) or if it's about the fish itself, but something about their sashimi, especially the fattier / richer pieces like toro, don't sit well with me. However, when the fish is paired with the rice and/or other ingredients, it always hits.

Yelp
Hands down I think Momiji has it when it comes to a delicious lunch in the Chinatown/City Center area for anyone who works in the area. Since the first time I had food from this restaurant, I have been obsessed! Just about everything I've had has been delicious. Their lunch specials are by far my favorite because for $15 you get a great portion size so that you can eat some now and some for later. Items I've tried that I would highly recommend, - Chicken Hibachi - Steak Hibachi - Shrimp Hibachi .... can you tell I love their hibachi lol. The steak is my fave. - 2 sushi roll lunch special (spicy tuna and shrimp tempura are solid options) - Valentine roll Unfortunately, the restaurant only take to go orders at this time. If you call they will have your order ready in 10-15 minutes typically. The process of picking up is easy and you pay right at the door. I would recommend taking the train or walking to Momiji, especially if you work in this area because parking can be kind of annoying in this area especially if there's a game at Capital One arena. I also noticed another Yelper mentioned that they are on Uber Eats which is amazing. Check it out, I'm sure Momiji will blow you away as well.

Yelp
Food: 5* Price: 5* Service: 5* Ordered via Uber Eats during a business trip. The food was fresh, well proportioned, and tasty. The chefs choice was a great size for the price. Ample, tasty and delicious. The spicy salmon sushi was also very tasty, a little spicy, but just enough. Really good taste. I would reorder.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot with good food and pricing. I'm the past, there was a great happy hour offered. They have since changed their business model and are take out only.
google avatar

Reeya A.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite take-out sushi spot in the city. The fish is always very fresh and the servings are consistently generous. I haven't tried anything here I don't like! The lunch specials are also wonderful.
google avatar

Yelp
Bummed this place is takeout only because their sushi and hibachi are awesome. I only had an issue with my order once when I bit into a sushi roll and there was something hard and black in it. I immediately spit it out, but honestly still went back because again their sushi is generally superb. Last time the yum yum sauce was a bit thin, but they make it from scratch so I'll give them a pass for the consistency. Overall love getting takeout here!
google avatar

Lily S.

Yelp
A solid option for well-priced sushi. It's not a standout, in my opinion, but if you want simple sushi delivered, Momiji is the right choice!
google avatar

Erin P.

Yelp
This is my go to take out sushi spot. I usually order through Uber Eats, but will do pick up if I'm in the neighborhood. The ingredients are always super solid quality, it's fast, and very consistent. It's also affordable for the quality. My usual order include the Alaska Roll, Valentine roll, and spicy salmon roll, alongside salmon nigiri (and a piece of salmon sashimi for my dog because of course). I've also eaten in at the restaurant and love their back patio in the warmer months. It's also a great spot for bigger parties, as there is room and the menu also includes hibachi favorites to suit even the pickiest of eaters.

Yelp
I had to order on line because the dining room is currently closed. A little inconvenient but we live in a different time. I ordered three rolls. A Dragon, Santa and Sweetie rolls. Every roll was deliciously prepared. Generous with the ingredients and carefully crafted. I personally like the layers of texture and flavor. 3 rolls were prepared in about 10 minutes. Truly a treat.
google avatar

Yelp
So glad Momiji survived the pandemic! They've been delivery only for some time, but still the best, freshest, and most generous sashimi in DC. Just look at this beautiful sashimi platter!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
Did delivery. Fast, hot and fresh. They use real crab and it's amazing. Order of hibachi rice had great flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
Great value for a quick lunch. Any 3 rolls for $18. I ordered 3 dynamite rolls that are normally $10 each. I called ahead and it was ready within 15 minutes. It's currently take out only (Oct 2023). I'd go back again t k try some of their other rolls too.

Yelp
This review is based on an order via UberEats. We ordered 3 different rolls (Spider roll, Alaskan roll, and Christmas roll), based on Yelp reviews. All 3 rolls were delicious and the seafood smelled/looked/tasted fresh. My favorite of these choices was the Spider roll. Everything was packed well, I had all of the utensils & sides that I needed, and the delivery was quick. I will definitely order from here again. Next time, I hope to try the Valentine roll since the reviews are great.

Hailee Lovina B.

Yelp
I just ordered here from UberEats and accidentally gave 3 stars when I meant to give 5 stars. I'm so sorry !!! Food tasted great and was packaged so carefully. I loved the garnished and extra cardboard support inside the bag so my food wouldn't fall over or get squished. Thank you. Unfortunately ubereats won't let me change my rating, but this place deserves a 5!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered from Momiji for the first time via Uber eats. The Valentine roll is absolutely delicious and very filling! The order came with yummy spicy Mayo, ginger and wasabi. The spicy tuna and Philadelphia rolls were fine, but probably wouldn't reorder them compared to the speciality roll. Great option for takeout sushi!

J M.

Yelp
The food is really good. Ordered all hibachi style meals and portion size was plenty. I would highly recommend for take out.

Becca L.

Yelp
Delicious, good quality sushi in DC. The gyozas are amazing as well. Love the yum yum sauce and will definitely be ordering here again.
google avatar

Christi S.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber eats - tried a couple sushi rolls and dumplings. Dumplings were ok, standard fare. Sushi was delicious. I would have liked more sauce drizzled, but not knowing how they come it was still good and on me for not asking for more on the side just in case.
google avatar

Obai K.

Yelp
One of my favorite sushi spots in dc. They are currently only doing takeout but the food is prepared fairly quickly. Also their lunch specials are great!

Yelp
OMG! Where has this place been all my life????? This review is for a to-go order. I decided to order lunch after seeing this spot appear on my Ubereats account. After quickly jumping to Yelp, thanks Yelpers, I decided to place an place my first order. Selection: I purchased the Valentine and Alaskan roll and honey, let me tell you this...FRESH AND DELICIOUSLY prepared! This is how I can best describe both items. The fresh quality helped me to know that this restaurant takes pleasure in providing their customers with quality care, this is rare at sushi places as I have indeed encountered a lot of bad spots. Not this place! The fish was fresh, well prepared, and beyond delicious. The Valentine roll contains a delicious balance of sweetness with the sauce provided and the quantity was enough to share with someone or overindulge like I did lol either option works! But, you absolutely need to ORDER THIS DISH! The Alaskan roll...ahhhhhh perfection! A delicious balance of fresh salmon and avocado with just the right quantity of both in each bite. Everyone, I seriously cannot stress this, if a restaurant can deliver quality food to-go, they have potential to deliver stellar performance in person. Looks like I'll be taking a trip to check out the bar, ambiance, and more selections and then give another review! Excellent sushi!!!!!!
google avatar

Yvette C.

Yelp
I unfortunately have to update my previous review to reflect my current opinion and experience with this restaurant. The reasoning for the single star is as follows, (i) I found a fishbone in my sushi, which is not only bad but dangerous; (ii ) The food quality continues to deteriorate, (iii) zero consistency (likely due to high staff rotation), (iv) no option to eat indoor (only pick up). I have supported this business all through the start of the pandemic and until now. I continued to pick up sushi even though they changed their business model and decided not to open for public. However, the quality has significantly deteriorated and despite given them many other opportunities, I see no improvements. I used to love Momiji and I hope they find a way to rescue what they had, in terms of freshness, consistency, value and ambiance. But until then, I can't recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
STILL TAKEOUT ONLY! Stopped by for Momiji's lunch specials and it didn't disappoint. Fish was fresh and portions were good for roll sizes! SERVICE: 3.5/5 - Super easy to order takeout, but can be annoying to wait for food. The door is blocked off so you can't go into the restaurant, so you have to wait outside. Food took about 10 minutes to prepare, but I didn't feel the safest waiting outside the store. Even though it was during the day, I was approached by loiterers on the street asking to take pictures of me or trying to talk to me. FOOD: - Salmon Roll: 5/5 - So much fish in this roll and it was all fresh. - Alaskan Roll: 4.5/5 - I love a good salmon avocado roll. This one had cucumber in it too. Only compliant I have is that the roll was falling apart a little. But that'll happen when it's packed with so much food!
google avatar

Janet K.

Yelp
Currently they only do take out! I ordered over the phone and by the time I had gotten to the place, my order was ready for pick-up! Very quick! The rolls may look small but they are indeed so filling! The fish tasted very fresh and they were sooo plump and delicious! Would recommend and will be coming back again!

Yelp
During a late-last-year stay in DC to see our daughter, we decided to get takeout from this spot, to share on a beautiful outdoor rooftop dinner gathering. We got a mix of hot and cold dishes, and everything had stayed temperature appropriate when it arrived. We ordered a smattering of dishes for all to share...seaweed salad, hibachi rice, gyoza, shumai, happy Santa roll, mickey roll, crazy roll and a hibachi chicken dinner. Everyone seemed very happy with their choices and the amount of food was more than enough for five people. Given our kid's affection for this place, I'm hoping we get the chance to visit in-person in the restaurant someday soon.

Yelp
Love!! Our top spot for to go sushi in Chinatown. Large menu with classic favorites and then some original rolls and options. Affordable price for sushi and such nice staff. You can't eat in, take out only. Not sure if that was from Covid and they decided to stay that way
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
I love this place! Never dined in as I came across it during Covid, and according to other reviews they're only take out, which I can appreciate as Covid never went away. I always order delivery and the quality is consistent and fresh! The price is good and is somewhere I can trust the fish will be fresh

Yelp
I placed an order on Sunday 4.2.23 through Uber Eats. It took over 90 minutes to arrive, but I am not taking any stars off for Momiji because they had the order completed in less than 20 minutes. After checking through their reviews, I ordered 1) Miso soup (which I haven't tried yet) 2) Alaska roll 3) Seafood roll and 4) Jumbo Sumo roll. Here are my thoughts: Well packaged and perfect execution of my order. Alaska roll and seafood roll - SUPER fresh and a nice large portion in each bite. 6/5 stars for each of them Jumbo sumo roll - just ok for me. Fish was fresh and it was well made, but it was a little dense and the wasabi mayo wasn't doing it for me. 3.5/5. It's probably a great roll for folks with different taste buds than mine. I will definitely order from them again and maybe try sit down when they are reopen for dine-in.
google avatar

Ron C.

Yelp
I've never understood the draw with this place other than the fact it's in a somewhat touristy area of DC. The atmosphere both upstairs and downstairs is bland, the sushi is basic at best, and the bartenders aren't good. An old friend of mine swears by this place and I've tried it several times and I think the whole experience is shit. Just my ten cents.
google avatar

Bobby F.

Yelp
Sadly, we went to this location today after our trip to the National Mall today and realized they only do take-out orders. But all was not lost, take-out it is. Baltimore, Spicy Salmon and Tuna plus Sweety Rolls we brought home to Annapolis!! Rolls were massive and filled with tons of flavor. I highly recommend and hope they re-open the restaurant in the near future!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered from Momiji for the first time recently and really enjoyed it. Actually, I'm wondering how I've overlooked it before! Anyone that knows me well knows that my most consistent food craving is sushi. But recently, I've really be craving a Bento Box, a nice little assortment of warm, cold, fresh and cooked. Since I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of sushi quality, I also ordered a specialty cooked roll (The Santa Roll) just in case the nigiri in the Bento wasn't hitting right. What I ended up was a ton of food, that was able to satisfy my hunger for both dinner and lunch the next day. Some Bento's can be a little scarce in terms of potions, but not Momji's. Aside from the four pieces of Nigiri, there was an ample amount of tempura veggies and shrimp, teriyaki chicken, seaweed salad, a sliced orange, a side of rice and miso soup! The Santa Roll was also very filling - filling enough that most of the Bento I had to set aside to enjoy for the next day. All of the sushi was great, as well as the tempura veggies and shrimp. The chicken wasn't the most flavorful (more on the bland side) but overall, the experience of the whole Bento was great. Also, everything was packed up very nicely with little spillover or leaking. That's not the easiest feat with all of these different items in transit via delivery. Overall, hearty portions and delicious menu items so I will definitely be ordering from here again in the future!
google avatar

Susie W.

Yelp
I cannot get enough of the valentine roll from Momiji! Perfectly fresh avocado and soft soybean paper with crispy shrimp tempura and spicy tuna! The chefs special sauce is a delectable combination of creamy Mayo, tangy teriyaki, and a little bit of spice. This spot is great for takeout, your food is ready quickly, and they're still following strict COVID protocol. Definitely give it a try!
google avatar

Clare O.

Yelp
There's a possibility I'm unhealthily addicted to this restaurant. The Alaska roll is on point as per usual; and this was my first time being a spicy salmon roll (ever), and it was amazing!! I'm usually a spicy tuna person but I think this is my new go-to. It was SO GOOD. I can't say enough good things about Momiji. Also not pictured (which was my first time trying here) was salmon nigiri and the house salad with ginger dressing. The piece of salmon was HUGE (completely worth the $3.95) and the ginger dressing on the salad is to die for. They're also super quick, so if you want fast, good quality sushi, this place is the way to go.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited during covid- take out/delivery only It was a Friday night so they were extremely busy... had to call multiple time to finally get through But beside that, easy to order. Picking up was a little confusing... it was so busy that there were a cluster of people waiting outside... no one seems to know where the line start etc Their sushi was fresh and reasonably priced. Their Thai milk tea was also not too sweet! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
I order uber eats. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. I really would like to go in person. My food was still extremely hot and tasted wonderful. I started to eat the hibachi before I took the picture but the portions size is well worth the price.
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Valentine roll was amazing! It was perfectly crispy yet soft, lightly spicy, and flavorful, especially with the special chef's sauce (creamy and a bit spicy). Definitely a must-get here!! Crazy roll (eel and avocado), on the other hand, while good, just tasted like a very standard roll. Sushi & Sashimi Lunch was a good deal and quite filling. The salmon sashimi in that dish was absolutelyyyyyy amazing. The other sashimi types included yellowtail and tuna, both of which were pretty good but not a standout like the salmon. The accompanying miso soup was disappointing, being too salty. Overall though, good sushi! Plus, my friend is pretty picky about sushi, but he really likes this place. Came back for a second time and tried sushi sandwich and the sashimi appetizer. Sushi sandwich was good, but the meat were all ground up and mixed together; honestly, I'd rather have real rolls with "pure" (non-ground) meat. After all, the point of sushi is to enjoy the fine, delicate flavors and textures of fish, yes?? If I wanted ground meat, I'd order a burger :P The sashimi appetizer was great; I got salmon, ahi tuna, and escolar (which was new to me but tasted delicious too!).
google avatar

Randy H.

Yelp
Good and quick sushi. Good price for take out. Not the safest area. Cheap and easy though.

Yelp
Maybe this was just an off day and there was some catastrophic mixup in the kitchen, but this was the worst Nabeyaki Udon I've ever had in my life. ORDERING: We called ahead to order three orders of the Nabeyaki Udon, which according to the website comes with "Shrimp Tempura, fish cake, chicken, vegetables & egg." The service was friendly and prompt. PICKUP: Grabbing our takeout order was a bit tricky. It was around 7 PM in the evening on a Friday, and there was mess of cars double parked with the hazards on outside the restaurant. However, we fortunately were able to find a spot a block over. NABEYAKI UDON: So where to start... We had ordered three orders of the Nabeyaki Udon and were ready to dig in to a hot and hearty bowl of thick noodles. What we got instead was three containers of chilled *ramen*. The broth it came with was pretty disappointing, little more than a watery diluted stock of something vaguely reminiscent of a miso soup. After a lot of fishing we were able to find a slice of fish cake. The shrimp tempura it came with was also dripping in grease and shockingly salty, maybe only to accentuate the fact that literally everything else in the dish was so lacking in any dimension of flavor or heft.

Yelp
Not bad sushi for takeout! My friend ordered online for a Thursday pick-up and it was ready in15 minutes! We ordered two different rolls and takoyaki. The takoyaki was pretty good - a classic. Wish there were a bit more octopus pieces because it felt like it was almost all batter. For the rolls we got the Rock n' Roll (Spicy Tuna, Green Tobiko, on a yellowtail & Avocado roll) and Volcano Roll (Smoked eel w. cream cheese wrapped by avocado, spicy octopus & spicy tuna) Rock n Roll - I enjoyed the blend of flavors of all the ingredients. However I felt that the spicy tuna was puréed (if I can describe it this way) so much that it weakened the flavor of the spicy tuna. Also was not spicy. Volcano Roll - I am not a big fan of the cream cheese in sushi but if you do, this is the specialty roll to go for. The blend of the different ingredients were extremely tasty, otherwise, and made it quite filling. Our order was provided with chopsticks, a good amount of sauces, plenty of ginger and wasabi to make our own dipping sauce, and napkins.

Yelp
On a late night in the office, delicious food and thoughtful delivery can be extremely comforting. Lots of sushi places and chirashi options available in the vicinity, but not all are executed the same. The composition of ingredients was well thought out, and packaging was very thoughtful and careful. Thank you Momiji.

Kristen E.

Yelp
Fast delivery, thoughtful packaging, food was still warm, it was delicious! The hibachi meal was large portion size and included the clear onion soup which was perfect for a winter evening and a salad. I will definitely be ordering from here regularly.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
I thought the vegetarian sushi was pretty good. I hate the flavor of seaweed, so I substituted the regular wrapper for soy. I wish there had been a different flavor sauce than just soy sauce to choose from. My friends also tried the hibachi grill and seemed to enjoy it. They served very large portion sizes. We went on a Saturday night, and it was a pretty popular place. We had a party of nine and there was enough room for all of us I definitely think I would come back for sushi. They had a ton of veggie options which is not the easiest find.
google avatar

Mischa J.

Yelp
As far as sushi goes, the prices are fairly good, and the quality and taste is also good...I just wish they would have Japanese "craft" beers here, that would make it even better! This place is nice, though, so try it if you like sushi and or sake!
google avatar

Brynt L.

Yelp
Randomly came across this place a few weeks ago while looking for hibachi. Decided to pick up the chicken and shrimp entree. It came with a salad and soup. The pros: great portion sizes, fresh veggies and proteins, good packaging. The cons: long wait time and high price point. Overall, solid choice. I've also had their sushi and it's also very tasty.
google avatar

Jess W.

Yelp
Ordered take out from here and loved it! There's a bunch of good sushi spots in this area with Nama around the corner and Kura Revolving Sushi Bar down the street, but this is great for take out! It's a good price and quality sushi! I got the salmon skin, salmon, and the eel and avocado. It looks like my boyfriend got tuna and salmon and avocado, tempura, and yellowtail and scallion? but I can't say for sure! They do a good job keeping COVID-19 in mind, so they ask customers to wait outside until their food is ready. Also, there's a bubble tea shop right down the street so it's a nice combo.

Yelp
It was my first time visiting Momiji. We stopped by before my movie time which was at 7:30. We got there around 6:20 and they gave us the happy hour menu which was ending in 10 min (6:30). They told us if we ordered by 6:30 we'd be able to get them with the happy hour price. We sat downstairs, and there were I believe 2 waitstaffs 3 sushi chefs, and a manager? Anyways, they have an open sushi bar, so I could watch the chefs make our sushi, and they were really fast too. Our sushi came out within a couple minutes and their quality was ok. I'm used to having the higher quality sushi so I can't speak for everybody though. However, one of the servers accidentally kicked my chair (which I'd be fine with if they apologized) but he just walked away as if nothing happened, and they all hover over you to take your plates out of the way even before you're completely done. Which was a bit annoying to me. So not the best service, but food wise, it wasn't a bad experience.
