Best South Asian Restaurants in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Nepalese dumpling stand Momo Cha is one of a limited number of spots in metro Detroit that serves Nepalese fare, and it’s available at the Detroit Shipping Company food hall in Midtown. The small dumplings here are called momos and are filled with choice of chicken, pork, or veggies with tofu and can be pan-fried, steamed, or deep-fried, and come with a choice of chutneys. Other traditional dishes here include sekuwa (skewered and grilled meat) and dhal bhat, a dish comprised of lentils, rice, curry, and pickles." - Serena Maria Daniels

What's that about with JASON

Google
This place rocks, and I mean from the food to the service. First off the buzzer they give us very accurate but they move like 2 mins ahead of time usually. The food was really good the buns man lol those things were soft and the chicken inside was awesome. I had the sticky rice with chicken and wonton. Highly recommended 10/10 this say allot seeing how i haven't been on here but had to give MY OPINION ABOUT THIS PLACE.

SillyBilly

Google
I think this location is more hyped-up for food than it actually is. We went there on a Saturday afternoon. DSC was packed but we were able to order and get our food in 20 mins. You have to order online and wait. Momo's were OK and not as flavorful as you would expect. We also got fries chat which was simply fries with some bland green chutney. They were out of most of the ingredients. Feels like waste of money. You can go there by ambiance and liveliness of the place but food is not worth the trip.

Google
absolutely worst customer service. the guy at the front counter had an attitude for no reason. if you're a miserable doing what you do, please go find something else that better suits you. also the dumplings we ordered were so bland. how can you be bad at literally the ONE thing that you sell? save your money and dont go here

Google
I was not familiar with this cuisine at all and this was a good experience. We ordered some pan fried dumplings and French fry chast. The dumplings were perfect and the sauces were delicious. The fries were definitely interesting. I enjoyed them but you have to like what's on top of them. It was like nothing I had ever had on fries before and I really liked it.

Google
We tried the pan fried veggie momo and the boiled momo which were really nice. Veggie noodles was very okay. PS: Ask for the chutneys with momo otherwise you might not get it 😅

Google
Very fun place to grab a quick bite to go or hang out in the common area. The food is very good, the staff is a group of friendly locals who make you feel at home.

Google
This is the first Nepalese restaurant in Detroit. For a Nepali living in Detroit, i am very happy about their opening. I met with the humble owners, Chef Lama who is Nepali and Louisa. The momo tastes like the ones in Nepal. I am so happy that they open and for anyone who have not been there, GO! You will be hooked.

Google
The momos are okay at best. Tasted like trader joes gyoza 🥟 The chutney is also not authentic. Sadly not impressed by the flavors
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious momo (Nepalese dumplings) with an amazing savory green sauce. Their mango lassi ($5) is also very good. Service additionally very prompt and convenient, you take a buzzer that buzzes when your food is ready. Finally, it is located in the Detroit Shipping Company with many other food stalls and seating both upstairs and downstairs. Recommended and check it out in the DSC!
google avatar

Yelp
The service was impolite, the food was very average. You can mix the kind of preparation for the momos, even when you order the large portion. We got ours pan fried, they were ok, not the most flavorful momos I've had. The samosas were ok too. A little pricey for the amount you get.

Yelp
Everything was pretty tasty! My friend and I came here before a game at LCA. This is located in a warehouse food court with various options, but this was calling our name that day. We started with some momo dumplings. How are you gonna go to a place called Momo Cha and not get dumplings? These were nice and tasty. For our entrees we got the fried rice and one of the curries. Each of these entrees was very solid. The staff was quite friendly. The atmosphere is pretty lively since it's like a food court. Seats may be tough to find! Overall, great place, would recommend.

Yelp
Steer clear of the tikka. We ordered the Chicken Momos and the Paneer Tikka Masala. The momos were decent. The tikka masala, however was terrible. The sauce had no evidence of spices and tasted exactly like thick, lukewarm Campbell's Tomato Soup. I hate wasting food, but it was inedible. We threw it away without finishing it. Frustrating and a waste of money.

Yelp
Ordered the large pork momos, pan fried with mint dipping sauce. Also ordered the chicken Kebabs (2 pcs). Momos were excellent, went perfectly with the mint dipping sauce. I would definitely recommend ordering it pan fried (or deep fried). Skip the chicken Kebabs, the meat was bit over cooked.

Manvendra Singh R.

Yelp
Loved the samosas, steamed & pan fried momos. Authentic taste and great service. Fun ambiance.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
I tried their chicken momos with all 3 sauces. I thought they were pretty tasty. However, I'm not sure if it's just because my mom cooked dumplings the other day, but I didn't find these momos particularly super flavorful or super special compared to other dumplings I've had like the other reviews suggest. I will say though that this stand is probably the best one at the Detroit Shipping Company! The soy based sauce and the tomato based sauce had very little flavor and it was hard to differentiate the two between looks and taste to the point where I asked the worker if she did give me two different sauces. The green sauce had a lot more flavor so I would go for that. I would definitely come back again though since the food looked fresh and tasted good. The workers were very nice too.

Yelp
We ordered the Chicken kebab, chicken dumpling, pan fried with all 3 sauces. Bill total was $15.83. Watching the guy make our dumplings as well as others, he's so quick and does it as if it was his second nature. The dumpling was so yummy! The chicken kebab was heavily curried, it had good kick, was interesting.

Yelp
Upon my first visit to Detroit Shipping Co. I was expecting your typical variety from a food hall based on places I have been to in other cities. I was pleasantly surprised to see Nepalese food. Having never had Nepalese food before, I figured I'd give Momo Cha a try. A variety of fillings, combined with a variety of preparation styles makes it easy to try more than one. I went with steamed and pan fried dumplings of chicken and port. For dipping sauces, I went with a spicy sauce (which I believe has since been taken off the menu). It was HOT, but awesome. It was a slow ramp-up from moderate heat to lava (which for me is something like Bdubs Wild Sauce). Excellent and I will definitely get them again the next time I'm there.

Yelp
Came here to eat on 07/14. Shows open but when we reached they seemed to be closed due to a private event. Came all the way from Canton. Never again

Yelp
The food was amazing, came out so quick! lots of seating and love the liveliness of the place

Yelp
To all who dont know. Momo's are nepalese dumpling. They're very good and super yummy. Plus the dipping sauce that come with these bad boys are super yummy. My go to here would be the Pork and the Vegetable momos. Have them deep fried and served with tamarind and mint chutney. Only proper because these dumpling are more himalayan style, than their chinese/japanese counterparts. I can totally eat 10 of these easy. Plus the vegetable momos taste similar to samosas. I always have a good time here. Plus everytime we come here, it's always a must for me to grab something from this spot. Thank you so much for reading my review. I hope this helps with your decision making experience. Enjoy your awesome yelptastic day!!

Yelp
The momos - dumplings are amazing. We got the steamed and pan fried veggie momos and while the dumpling wrappers were awesome, the filling starred. Amazing flavors!

Yelp
Had a wonderful meal at Detroit Shipping a few weeks ago with a friend and Momo Cha was definitely on our "to try" list now that they're open. We split two snack sized orders of dumplings--the chicken and the pork, both pan fried. The chicken is a ground mixture with cilantro, green onion and masala spices and the pork is mixed with ginger-garlic, onion and masala spices. For dipping chutney we tried the tomato cilantro and the roasted soybean sesame and I liked both but the tomato cilantro was my favorite, which did surprise me since I'm not generally much of a cilantro fan. As far as the dumplings, the pork was definitely my favorite of the two because I love the ginger-garlic combo. They were definitely pretty busy when we were there so there was a bit of a wait for our order but it wasn't crazy long. And they have pagers so you can have a seat, sip a beverage, and relax until your order is ready. Love it and can't wait for my next visit!

Yelp
We ate at Detroit Shipping Co last night. Personally, I was looking forward to Momo Cha as I really wanted some of their momos! I ordered the chicken ones. The website said it was about a 30 minute wait but they were delivered to my table in 15. They were so delicious! Even the sauce, which was spicy, was amazing. The ground chicken and other stuffings were perfectly incorporated and bursting with flavor. I had steamed momos but would be curious to try pan fried and deep fried now! The one big drawback was on my second to last momo, there was a staple. I kept chewing thinking there was a very hard ramen noodle or something but I pulled out a staple. I'm glad I found it before swallowing!

Yelp
Great food. located in this food court sorounded by other great options. Live music, art and many other things at the shipping container company place

Yelp
The highlight of my trip to Detroit Shipping Company! I ordered the 4 pc of each type of momo/dumpling: vegetarian, pork, and chicken. I picked a different prep style for each, and got the mint cilantro, tamarind, and tomato dipping sauces. Easy ordering interface online, you get a text when your order is fulfilled and ready for pickup. Of the three styles, I wasn't in love with the deep fried. It was just too much crunch and competed with the flavor of the filling. The pan fried and steamed iterations were the best- excellent texture, highlighted the dough and the filling. Ranked, chicken was the best, then pork, then the veggie a close third. Of the sauces, the mint cilantro was supreme. I want to drink it and bathe in it. 12 large dumplings total for under $20 with tax and tip, definitely a decent deal. I'll definitely come back to try the rest of the menu!

Yelp
My first experience with nepalese food, so I could be a little off-base, but... Veggie dumpling stuffing is mediocre. The green chutney tastes storebought or a little worse. ‍
google avatar

Tess S.

Yelp
Their dumplings were the highlight of my smorgasbord lunch at Detroit Shipping Company. I also had the samosas, which were very good. I liked 2 out of 3 sauces (the green and the brown). Worth a visit, the line was short and I could see staff prepping dumplings in the open kitchen! Very cool.

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and there was plenty of outdoor seating and parking. The outdoor seating had heat lamps to keep it warm and a large tent to keep us in the shade. We ordered online and added our table number and they brought the food out to us. This spot has the best dumplings I have ever eaten. I ordered 4pc pan fried pork dumpling and 4pc pan fried chicken dumpling with all the different chutneys. I prefer pan fried dumpling because they aren't as oily as the deep fried but still have a crispy texture. My favorite was the pork dumplings because they have so much flavor and are very juicy. The chicken dumpling was also delicious but a little more subtle with the flavor. I would highly recommend pairing with the tomato cilantro chutney and the hot sauce. I will definitely be coming back to try more items on the menu next time!
google avatar

Yelp
A fun Nepali spot located in Detroit shipping company! Pros: good variety, lots of filling in the samosas Cons: they didn't have the pakoras available which I was looking forward to!, not much flavor in the samosas but the crisp was very good I definitely would like to come back to try some of their dumplings next time!
google avatar

Artrell W.

Yelp
My first experience with Nepalese cuisine did not disappoint. We had dumplings; full of flavor, with unique and flavorful sauces to complement them. They have an adequate selection of menu items for the type of venue and the service was quick. The location is trendy, in a food court style setup. They had live music and a couple of bars that make this a great hangout joint. It's worth a try.
google avatar

Yelp
Momo Cha might be my favorite "station" at Detroit Shipping Co. The momos took a while to make, but they were incredibly fresh and delicious! The pan-fried veggie momos were great, the steamed ones were even better, BUT the curried seasonal veggies were the best! If I would have know how good they were going to be, I definitely would have ordered more! VERY vegan and vegetarian friendly, too.
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Dissapointed ..Personally I feel the flavor needs to b kicked up a few notches..esp in the veg momo..more ginger maybe. The wrapper was on point..and what is a momo place without an amazing momo chutney..sauces r a lil weak..wanted to really love this place. Taipei frozen potstickers r more flavorful..have had the opportunity to have momos in Tibet, Nepal n India..its the chutney n filling that makes the momo lipsmacking..maybe for our western palate its subdued..not happy posting this review. PS..did not try the hot sauce...maybe that's what I was missing!
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
Okay, but not really what I was expecting. I ordered a snack size (4 dumplings) of pork dumplings. You get to choose if you want them to be steamed, pan-fried, or deep-fried; I chose steamed to be a little healthier. You also get to choose if you want chicken, pork, or tofu, as well as your dipping sauce (I chose tomato chutney, although the mint chutney sounded intriguing as well). The dumplings were fine but nothing really special. I'm still giving them four stars because I think if I had gotten them pan-fried or maybe try a different meat it would have been better. It had some sort of curry in it which I was not expecting. That being said, I would still come back here and try a different combination of dumplings.

Yelp
This place was a great find recently while pub crawling. Located in the Detroit Shipping Company complex, it's one of several little tasty eateries that coexist with a full bar for your drinking needs. The main dish on their quite compact menu is dumplings. There are several proteins, sauces, and cooking styles. Pick your combination, pay, get your buzzer, and they page you when it's ready. I selected pork pan fried with roasted soybean and sesame chutney. The sauce was a bit like an aioli, and the dumplings themselves were simply divine. Perfectly crisp on the outside of the dumpling, but soft underneath, the wonderful wontons concealed a very tasty and perfectly spicy and seasoned pork filling that went great with the sauce. I also sampled the mint cilantro chutney from a fellow diner's plate, and found it to be delicious as well. Although we only ordered the 4 piece snack on tbis trip, I could have easily made a full meal from this place. It was great food, and a quite decent price, and made to order! Definitely check this place out if you make your way to Detroit Shipping Company.

Yelp
Interesting food, and very tasty dumplings! I went for the steamed pork option, with the soybean and sesame chutney. I will say I've had dumplings with more of a tender wrap on them, but the pork was very tasty and the chutney was delicious. We also had the loaded Nepali fries, and they were interesting, but just ok. Would go back and maybe try the pan fried or deep fried, well maybe all of them! I love dumplings :)
google avatar

Yelp
Let me start by saying that this is the first Nepali restaurant in Detroit. Being a Nepali living in Detroit, this is a life changing experience for me. I met with the humble owners Chef Lama, who is Nepali and Louisa. The Momos are great, i mean just like in Nepal. I read a comment someone complaining that they were not round. In Nepal they come in all shape and sizes. Its a preference. The chicken curry also had a unique Nepali taste. You have to try it.
google avatar

Allyson M.

Yelp
Excellent service with a smile, and holy smokes, BEST dumplings I have ever had! WOW. We ordered the chicken, pan-fried, with the cilantro mint sauce. I kid you not, I could bathe in that sauce. It was incredible. The Shipping Company is such a unique, fun spot to have a meal. Make sure you grab an order of dumplings while you're there. You do not want to miss out. YUM!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Delicious dumplings in Detroit! I haven't tried or had many dumplings living in the Metro Detroit area. I feel there aren't many options for dumplings. REAL DUMPLINGS. When I saw this place on Instagram, I had to go try it and it HIT THE SPOT! The dumplings were so delicious. I loved getting all the varieties of what they had available. I order the deep fried, pan fried and the steamed. I let my boyfriend select the fillings to go in each because he is a dumpling fiend. They were all awesome. Also, the french fry chaat was SUPER delicious. It was something I have never had before and it was something I couldn't stop eating. They were surprising refreshing loaded fries. I would definitely order everything again! Enjoy!
google avatar

Timothy C.

Yelp
I love this place! Very flavorful and delicious food. The pan fried pork momo were off the chain! I had a side of hot sauce and boy, they were extremely hot. Not many people would like that but I love extreme level of heat. Might even ask if they sell a bottle of it? We devoured all 10 in seconds, next time I will order 20 instead! I also order Makhani aka butter chicken. I've eaten tons of butter chicken and this is one of the best Makhani I ever tasted. Very unique, perfect amount of spice and sweetness. I love the cashew flavor. Big chunky chicken too, a bit on the dry side but very delicious nonetheless. Will definitely be going here again for more pork momos!
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Desi food so I was really happy to find one of a few spots that served Nepalese food. The restaurant is located inside Detroit Shipping Co. I ordered the Pan Seared Chicken Momos with Cilantro Mint sauce, Chicken Kabob, and Chaat Fries. I have a good spice tolerance but their hot sauce definitely made me take a few sips of water so beware!
google avatar

Kanita A.

Yelp
I ordered the French Fry Chaat and Steamed Pork Momos . French Fry Chaat was a very different take on loaded fries than I'm used to. I'm used to deep, rich, fatty flavors on top of the fries and this is the total opposite. Its a burst of freshness. It has a bright acidity to it and then the cilantro with the onions. It's very different. I didn't care for it too much but my fiancé loved it. He ate the entire thing. I'm a chili cheese fry kind of girl what can I say. The true winner are the dumplings aka Momos. I could eat a dozen easily. They're crimped so beautifully and they taste just as good. Can't wait to go back for those dumplings.
google avatar

Tommy T.

Yelp
Honestly, I wanted to like this place a lot. I've been waiting for it for months and the anticipation was killing me. The dumplings did taste fresh, however it wasn't one of the best dumplings I've had or tasted. I ordered both the chicken and veggies dumplings with the red sauce which was okay. I also ordered the veggie platter meal which tasted better then the dumplings IMO. Will I come back? For sure, but I'm not sure if this would be my first stop if I did come back to DSC. I had a group of 6 with me and we all ordered something different and the consensus was the same....I would have given this place a 4 star but I think the anticipation and hype killed it for me. Still the best place for any type of dumplings is Jeff's Kitchen (I know I know, not the same dumplings but still....).
google avatar

Soar I.

Yelp
I want to give this review at least 3.5 stars because the cash register person was really nice, but I tried the pork dumplings and it as a little disappointed. It was recommended to me pan-fried but the crisp wasn't there, and the pork tasted old like it was left in the freezer for a while. The tomato chutney and mint cilantro sauces were recommended to me, which were the best part of the meal. The cilantro mint was refreshing, the tomato chutney was light. Together they taste better. Apparently the pork dumplings has more flavor than the chicken. Price was kind of pricey, imo: 8 for $9 I'll have to try the other items and update this post
google avatar

Shweta S.

Yelp
Don't even think twice about trying this place. Awesome and Authentic food... chutneys are absolutely perfect and mouthwatering.. Momos are very very authentic. Do try this place.
google avatar

Kai C.

Yelp
I haven't had dumplings but this was a pleasant treat! We ordered the pork pan fried dumplings with the tomato cilantro sauce. YUM! I wouldn't hesitate to come back to this place. They were so good, I forgot to take a picture.
google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
We got the Chaat fries and veggie dumplings with 4 dipping sauces. It was some of the best food I've had in Michigan. Don't miss out on this place!
google avatar

Lawrence S.

Yelp
We have had this place multiple times and every time is was amazing. Located in the Detroit shipping company, the atmosphere is great and the food is even better. Highly recommend trying this place out
google avatar

Seyad C.

Yelp
My perfect definition of comfort food. Whether it's a quick snack washed down with a beer in the summer or a whole steaming meal in Michigan's cold winter, Momo Cha will hit the spot Everytime. Each dumpling is always moist on the inside and Chef Lama makes sure to put quality in his ingredients no matter the cost. Even if dumplings aren't your thing, the other dishes on the menu are sure to please with the same level of quality (Try the dhal Bhaat with a side of chicken curry!). If you take the time to converse with the owners when they're not slammed, they'll treat you like family and even give you a full rundown of Nepali traditions with these little dumplings. Love this place and it's people, nestled away inside the shipping company and can't wait to be back!
google avatar

Doris K.

Yelp
Place is great. Fun setting for a date. I wouldn't dress up too much ladies keep it cool. Momo Cha has great prices, a lot of food, the dumplings were the best thing we ordered.
google avatar

Krupali A.

Yelp
In short- must come place!!! Will never forget how delicious were the momos and dal bhaat!!! Took a picture of a fresh making of momos, Check it out.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
As with every establishment at the Detroit shipping company, presentation is absolutely beautiful. I ordered the pan-fried pork dumplings, samosas, and selected a mint cilantro sauce. The dumplings and the samosas both tasted great, and the flavors were on point. That mint cilantro sauces flavor was explosive and was a excellent addition so the dumplings. This is a great addition to the collection at the Detroit shipping company. Four star review.

Steve L.

Yelp
Some of the best food ever, but take out ordering is a Pita. They frequently turn off the online ordering feature when they get a little busy, so you're left to trek to the restaurant and then wait 30 minutes for your order.
google avatar

Faith C.

Yelp
I had to compile a list of Detroit restaurants to try for work, and Momo kept coming up in my search. I love dumplings, so I had to try theirs out. I got the chicken dumplings and I had them deep fried. I have to say, I wasn't impressed sorry. The service was nice though and the dumplings did taste fresh.
google avatar

Mia -.

Yelp
so so so good. my uncultured ass had no idea what to expect from nepali food, but the dumplings here were incredible . I ended up buying a snack size of every flavor with every sauce and i have no regrets. The staff was also super nice. So fresh. so tasty. So good!!!

S D.

Yelp
Amazing veggie momos. The paneer makhani was also very good . My kid loved it . We will be back to try rest of the menu

Gemma A.

Yelp
Came to the Detroit shipping company on a Wednesday at about 4:15, and got a table. I ordered 4 of the steamed veggie dumplings with mint cilantro sauce and they were delicious! The flavor was great and they were warm and comforting (I bet the pan fried are even better). Definitely worth it, I would also recommend getting the pad Thai roll from Bangkok 96 next door.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic ! Easily #1 place to come and eat in Detroit... so many choices at the warehouse.
