We went to Momo Ghar on Parliament after watching a YouTube video that showcased their food being made fresh to order. In the video, Luke Martin featured the restaurant in his 24 Hours of Toronto episode. It showed the chef, Sonam Pontsang, preparing everything by hand right there in the kitchen. Luke and his foodie buddy Clement were sitting down, raving about how flavorful, fresh, and delicious the food was.
We tried several different types of momo. The first set arrived within 10 minutes of ordering, which set the tone for a subpar experience. The wrappers were chewy and a bit tough, even though they were steamed. The fillings were disappointing. The tandoori momo with chicken didn’t taste like tandoori or chicken at all. After sitting for a few minutes, the wrapper separated, revealing a beige-colored, pressed-together mash that was supposed to be chicken meat. It was impossible to tell if it was meat because it had no identifiable texture or flavor.
The “butter chicken momo” was also very strange. Again, we couldn’t tell we were eating chicken. The taste was flat and artificial, almost like a microwaved version of something you’d expect to taste rich and savory.
The beef blood appetizer sounded interesting, but there was no way to tell it had anything to do with beef or blood. The flavor was flat, chewy, and forgettable. Same story with the ribs. They were soft in texture but dry and flavorless. It felt like they had been warmed up from earlier packaging.
The only item that was remotely palatable was the “Tibetan Laping,” with crunchy bits of what looked like raw ramen noodles on top, cilantro, and other unidentifiable stuff in the middle. Even that was a 3 out of 10, mostly because it didn’t try to distract us with chili flakes and mystery meat textures.
When I asked the server about freshness, he first said the momos were made the day before at their Bloor Street location and delivered to Parliament Street. The chef wasn’t there. Then he changed his story and said they were made that morning. Either way, they weren’t made to order. And they definitely weren’t fresh.
We left most of the food behind. There was nothing worth savoring. It’s disappointing to be misled by what looked like genuine food prep by the chef (who is also the owner) in the YouTube video.
What we got instead felt like reheated bulk food with cheap filling and minimal effort.
Only go here if you’re okay with mystery fillings and food that tastes like it was made yesterday.
