My tattoo artist actually recommended Momotaro Sushi to me, saying it was the go-to spot if I wanted that classic “hole-in-the-wall” sushi experience and that’s exactly what it felt like. My friend and I were out shopping in Carytown and figured we’d check it out. We stopped in around 2 PM on a Thursday and were the only customers there, which made us wonder for a second if they were even open. But the one gentleman inside (possibly the owner?) quickly greeted us and assured us they were, in fact, open. He was incredibly sweet, and the service was genuinely great despite us being the only ones there. The atmosphere was definitely on the quieter, more low-key side—maybe even a little awkward at first with how empty it was—but once we settled in, it had a charming, humble vibe. As for the sushi: it was good, not mind-blowing, but definitely solid. A few of the rolls tasted slightly off—hard to explain, maybe something with the rice? It wasn’t anything that ruined the meal, just something we noticed. That said, for the price and portion size, it’s a great option, especially if you’re in the area looking for a quick and casual lunch. Overall, if you’re not expecting a pristine, high-end sushi bar and just want good sushi in a cozy, unpretentious setting, I’d recommend giving Momotaro a try.

Google
Hidden gem on the edge of Carytown! I was reluctant to try this place because of the lower rating when I initially saw it but I’m glad I dove into the reviews. Really cool vibe inside and the sushi was really good! My favorite roll was the pepper tuna roll. It had a nice kick to it. Also the ginger dressing on the salad was great!

Google
We got there right before closing and were the only ones there and yet felt welcomed and got great service and perfectly prepared edamame and fresh avocado roll , cucumber roll and delicious Danielle roll which has seaweed salad and something crunchy on the roll. When you leave the Byrd theater hungry and most of Carytown restaurants dark, we appreciated the 9:30pm close and no hesitation to have us eat in.

Google
Nice place to enjoy sushi and do a little people watching out the large picture window. We enjoyed a california roll and a couple classic rolls.

Google
I ordered a salmon roll and a spider roll. Both rolls were huge, but the spider roll could not be physically eaten in one bite unless I unhinged my jaw. Both rolls were also mediocre. The salmon roll looked like tuna and did not have any cucumber. I expected better from a restaurant. I would have been more satisfied with grocery store sushi, unfortunately.

Google
Great sushi! Fresh tasting and stimulating flavors! The plating presentation was very good as well. The eatery is a very charming place on West Cary Street. I loved the flying dragon artwork too!

Google
Daughter and I love to try new sushi restaurants. We wanted to go down to Cary Street on a Saturday night to be able to walk around and check out some of the other stores. We had never been to Momotaro, so we thought we would give it a try. We were a tad worried since it was like 7pm on a Saturday night and we were the only people in the place and only ones the whole time we were there. We did see quite a bit of to go orders to go though. We ordered a Eel Dragon roll, eel roll, spicy tuna and tempura shrimp roll. The gentleman that waited on us was super nice and quick to help us out. Our order didn't take overly long to get made why we're waiting though they have a pretty cool saltwater fish tank setup for my daughter and I watch the fish for a while which was kind of fun. The decor is pretty cool, not a very large place maybe 10 tables or so and they had 1 table set up out on the sidewalk. Both my daughter and I thought the sushi was really good. I thought the quality was pretty top-notch and the size of the rules we're pretty filling. Don't know if it was a fluke and just a time and when we went with no one there but this place should definitely be much busier. When we venture back down to Cary Street again for sushi, I'm sure we would be stopping in.

Google
Ordered the volcano roll last night which was missing both the shrimp tempura AND the eel, my roll was just crab stick + avocado + cream cheese for some reason (wasn’t listed on menu)? The whole roll was also fried when it shouldn’t have been, probably to distract me from the lack of shrimp tempura but there were no tails so it was pretty obvious! It tasted ok but I’m not a fan of cream cheese and it definitely wasn’t what I ordered, not worth the cost when it was missing the main items.

Yelp
First time in here, but it won't be the last. Was apprehensive about hitting the place because it could use a store front facelift and looks a tad shabby on the outside. Decide to take a chance and I'm glad I did. Had one of the special rolls, an eel and avocado and it was divine! Looking forward to coming back and work my way thru the menu! Service was friendly and quick.

Yelp
I have been here 10+ times and they have never disappointed. The atmosphere is intimate and chill. Usually one or two other tabes due to sales being to-go mainly. The dinner for 1 is customizable and always hits the spot.

Yelp
Was walking around Cary and came across this place. Took a chance on them after their menu caught our eye. We had their hot mama roll and it was great! Came out quick, service was kind and attentive, and overall and very pleasant ambiance and experience. Definitely don't judge a place by its average stars!

Yelp
Went here on a Friday night, about half full and no wait for a seat. I got two vegetarian sushi rolls and one was pretty decent (dank veggie) but the other one which was sweet potato, had barely cooked sweet potato in it. It felt like biting down into an almost raw carrot, so that was disappointing. We also got edamame which was good, small portion, but just enough for what I wanted. The other dish I got was a ginger salad and it was nothing special. The house warm saki was actually pretty good, a nice slightly sweet finish to it. My husband got some of the fish based rolls and was about as pleased with it as I was with my food. Would probably come back to try something else but nothing to write home about.

Yelp
Amazing service every time we eat there!! Owner is super nice. The sushi is always amazing, and you really cant beat the happy hour specials!! Definitely worth stopping in any chance you get!

Yelp
I first tried to crazy dragon roll when I first moved to Richmond. It's the best. I loved the eel roll and avocado roll as well. It all tastes fresh and they are very quick with their services. I've only ordered delivery but I would love to visit the store one day.
google avatar

Yelp
A very pleasant and delicious experience. Try the Imma Hot Momma... it's absolutely brilliant. Sushi chef was kind and attentive. Very excellent at making sushi. Cozy little spot in a cute part of town. Love it.

Yelp
Was ordering sushi and I usually order from levels or Miyabi and they were closed on this Wednesday night so I decided to take a chance on this restaurant. I have heard nothing about it so I guess that was my fault as well. Food took about an hour and a half to get there and when I did it was warm and look like maybe the delivery person had dropped it or I don't know. Overall just felt that they really did not care about presentation whatsoever (rolls cut at weird angles). The roles were very small compared to the price and the cream cheese was melted in my Philly roll and overall it lacked no flavor. I will definitely not be ordering from here again.
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Terrible order experience. Yes, I used a delivery app. No, that was not the reason why. This is WHY EXACTLY you should read reviews, before hastily ordering on a delivery app. A "snapper ceviche" with no citrus juices, 3 small slithers of tilapia passed on as Red Snapper on a hastily put together salad is NOT a value for $15. The rolls were equally treading water in the dark abyss of mediocrity. How does this spot survive without making appropriate changes?

Sean D.

Yelp
Great food and drinks! Service was attentive and fast, also reasonably priced. Will be back soon!

Yelp
This place is super sketchy. Just know that ahead of time, I didn't. They were out of glasses so they gave us plastic solo cups, he handed them to us with his fingers inside them. The rolls are pretty small given the prices. And they were awkwardly warm. Dead bugs on the walls. The wait is very long considering how few people are in there. After finally getting the food it is good we didn't need anything else because he didn't come back around for like 30 minutes. My beer can came out with a bunch of dirt and debris on the top. The receipt just said "Momo" next to every item. So that stepped up the sketch, couldn't tell how much the things I ordered actually cost me. He constantly touched his mask while he talked, which he would then touch our things with those same hands. Before ending this, the rolls weren't amazing but they weren't awful, I did eat them. The guy waiting the table was nice in our limited interactions. Overall, i just left feeling uncomfortable. It seems to have some odd cult following with the random 5 star reviews but outside of those people, everyone else seems to share my bazaar experience.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
What I had hoped would be an "oooh" experience was more like an "ewww" experience. I ordered delivery: a Jessie roll, a spicy tuna roll, soup, salad and edamame. I hate to kick local businesses when they are down, but it was just not good. At all. The cuts were small and weird. Some of it I could not even chew. The spicy tuna tasted like it was prepared far before it was served. The edamame was fine. The salad was not exactly fresh and was swimming in dressing. With so many other local options, I don't see a reason to do business with this restaurant. I hope they can pull it together.
google avatar

Jillian W.

Yelp
delicious sushi and kind waiter! Everything came out perfect. Also really good prices! Thank you!
google avatar

Zach C.

Yelp
I probably should give it 1 star, but the sashimi was reasonably fresh (although cut oddly). I don't think the fish was bad it's just in the city for some late night rolls the rice was literally garbage. I mean if I want mush I'll go to Kroger or 7-11. Rice is hard to make right, but this just was not good and your consumers at least deserve some effort when they spend money on your food.
google avatar

Arial A.

Yelp
Felt like a carry out trying to be a restaurant , spider webs and bad service. Food was worse than my college cafeteria
google avatar

Cori B.

Yelp
I've picked up food from Momotaro two times, and both were disappointing experiences. First, my boyfriend ordered the veggie tempura for his meal and the portion was much smaller than expected. I would describe the tempura we received as a small appetizer, not an entree. The second time we ate there, I arrived home and realized that the avocado salad I had ordered was missing from the bag. When I called to request a refund for the salad I was told that the restaurant was too busy to refund me just then, but that a manager would call me back. Nobody ever contacted me to correct the mistake or refund the salad. The sushi rolls themselves were fine, but not great. Certainly not tasty enough to justify the other issues.

Yelp
Average sushi with average service. Wednesday evenings (until 7pm) they have a happy hour special that is 1/2 off certain rolls which is a great deal. I had to ask for the happy hour menu which they provided upon request. I got the spicy tuna roll (on happy hour) and the crazy dragon roll. The fish seemed fresh and overall good for the price.
google avatar

Maya M.

Yelp
Do NOT eat here, it's a zero star. Very bad sushi. No flavor (vinegar or anything) in the rice. very mushy overcooked rice. Very little fish in the rolls or sushi. I would not recommend. Server was nice.
google avatar

Keegan Z.

Yelp
Perhaps I'm not a connoisseur of sushi, though I still think you can do better than Momotaro. Came here with a few friends to try it out. While there was a "happy hour" special running, it was severely limited in terms of which items were offered, and after ordering I was notified that half of my items ordered were out of stock. An unfortunate start. When I did receive my order, I found the taste lacking compared to other sushi establishments in the area. Also, their "crab" is really just imitation crab, and it definitely tastes nothing like actual crab. Perhaps Carytown Sushi and Sushi King spoiled me, though the fare here isn't even close to either of them. Service was lacking as well. Our server seemed less than interested in serving, and her sole offer to refill my drink took place long after I had finished my meal. Overall, while Momotaro is an economical choice, you get what you pay for. I would recommend you go elsewhere for your sushi fix. Overall: 2.0 stars -------------- Pros: - Affordable. This earns it the two stars, as most sushi places in this area can run up quite a tab with very little to show for it. Cons: - Sushi just isn't very good. Very bland with an odd consistency to it. Also, who wants imitation crab? - Parking for this location is difficult, and the Carytown lots are often full and still a walk to get to. - Service was lackluster. Often times I'm willing to work with a place if they at least have good food or good service, though this place has neither.

Yelp
Walked in feeling hungry and came out satisfied and full! Service was fast and friendly. Clean and peaceful environment, which was perfect for lunch. Ordered the Rams roll and Eel Dragon roll. The Eel Dragon melted right into my mouth and I finished that within 3 minutes! Rams had an interesting mixture but also pretty good overall.

Yelp
Read a few reviews and decided to give them a try anyways. We had food delivered- so I can't comment on the restaurant itself- but overall everything was meh. As someone else said- we typically never leave excess sushi on the table, with this place, we did. (Also we ordered 30+ rolls and only got one set of chopsticks?) Sushi was very bland and room temperature. Also didn't strike me as the freshest looking- will not be going back. We prefer lucky AF sushi
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
Hadn't been here before and was really excited to try a new (to us) sushi place for date night takeout. Should have just gone to Kroger. One roll was left entirely out of our order, the rice was mushy and flavorless, the avocado was NOT fresh, and the fish was suspiciously chewy and lukewarm.
google avatar

Soul King H.

Yelp
I ordered sake don (salmon sashimi rice bowl). Very simple dish so there was nothing to hide the poor prep. Salmon had been frozen or defrosted wrong, so it was dull and mushy and flavorless. The rice was worse, way overcooked, which is a mystery to me. Just buy a $20 rice cooker and any Japanese brand of short grain rice, follow the standard instructions about rinsing and soaking the rice, and use the water ratio printed on the package. Waitress was friendly and prompt, salad and miso soup were fine. Prices are reasonable, especially for happy hour drinks. But if they can't make good rice I won't be back.
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
Really disappointed. We received our delivery order late (by 30 min). The portions for what they charge are questionable. The ingredients didn't taste fresh Maybe it's better in person but I won't try.

Yelp
Visited 11/26/16 (Thanksgiving weekend) Richmond has many places for sushi but because many were closed I decided to try Momotaro. The lack of customers and the empty fishtank made the place seem super dull. I opted to sit at the sushi bar like I usually do so I could see my food being prepared. I was initially most startled by the lack of items in the sushi case (not sure what the official name is- where the fish is usually stored) and I decided to ask our waiter if there was more fish than the ones in the case and he said there were which made me feel better about ordering something of the chef's choice. Starter: The miso soup was nice after walking in the cold to the restaurant but it was extremely salty. I think I ended up drinking half of my glass of water with the soup alone. The salad was your standard iceberg lettuce salad with carrots and ginger dressing but there was a puddle of water on the bottom that watered down the dressing. Tokyo Platter: The Tokyo Platter was supposed to consist of 8 pieces of nigiri, 8 pieces of sashimi and 3 standard rolls all chef's choice. I think maybe they were out of fish or didn't want to pull out things they couldn't use up that day because there was salmon, spicy salmon, shrimp, imitation crab, red snapper and two slices of tuna. That's all that was in my platter with the addition of salted mackerel and some white tuna. The most dissapointing things were: 1) the imitation crab nigiri 2) getting the last two pieces of tuna that were end cuts and not even "slices" of fish 3) one of the rolls was just cream cheese and cucumber 4) the orange slice touching my fish which made the tuna taste like orange 5) the sushi rice was completely unseasoned (usually sushi rice has sushi vinegar and maybe salt or sugar) I was mainly disappointed, because I saw a picture of what other people have gotten and this was a huge let-down. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because it is Thanksgiving weekend and it was a low-peak time, but I feel like there were so many mistakes made that you can't just blame the timing. I walked past Carytown Sushi on my way to Momotaro and after this meal, I kind of wish I had saved myself a block of walking and just gone there. Akida and Carytown sushi are definitely still my go-to sushi spots.

Yelp
I'll start off by saying this was for ordered food so that was definitely taken into consideration. Having said that, this was flat out bad. Salad was warm and wilted. Hot sushi stored with cold which caused mayo to have bad smell. Pretty much tasteless, small portions with over all horrible quality. Entire order was thrown away.
google avatar

Hanna H.

Yelp
The sushi is great quality here and definitely tastes great. The service was alright, there were super long intervals between when the server checked on us. Upon entering the restaurant I immediately loved the interior but I will say it smelt a bit odd. I encourage you guys to try it out for yourself.
google avatar

L V.

Yelp
That was a huge waste of money. Most poorly prepared flavorless sushi I have ever had. Gross.
google avatar

Yelp
Really enjoyed coming here! Great atmosphere and service. Fresh sushi that tasted amazing and was well priced! We will definitely be coming back

Yelp
This place has seriously gone downhill. We went in around 9pm last night for a late dinner, but ended up walking out because 1. We (the waitress and I) killed a stinkbug on the wall next to our table. 2. There was no ice available (which is a bad sign- doesn't sushi have to be kept cold? How can you be keeping the sushi cold but not be able to make ice?) 3. My nigeria had a giant hair wrapped into the rice. DISGUSTING. The waitress was super nice and friendly and incredibly apologetic though. The one saving grace of this place last night...
google avatar

Gabby B.

Yelp
Delivery took an hour through Uber zests. The sushi was mediocre, salad was sitting in a POOL of dressing, soup tasted like pure sodium. Gave them a try but won't be coming back. Happy to support small business during this time but this just was not it.
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
I have gotten to-go sushi twice now from Momotaro and it has been delicious both times. The ingredients all taste super fresh and the staff couldn't be more accommodating or friendly. I would highly recommend trying this place out if you're on the hunt for some decent sushi in Carytown, and definitely order the dank veggie roll!
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
Ok so after a visit to Momotaro on Sunday, it's definitely time for an update. First off, they serve water with ice now! Hallelujah! If you've never been to Momotaro, you might be thinking "umm isn't that just standard?" Well, it didn't used to be at this sushi joint. But now they have a new chef and it's clear they've spiffed up the place. Along with ice in the water, they also have new menus that are even laminated. Some of the old favorites are still on the menu, but they've added some new rolls, too. At least I think some of them are new... Either way, they were new to me this past weekend. First up, the RVA roll. My dining companion chose this option, but we swapped pieces so I was lucky enough to try it. Holy goodness. I'll definitely be ordering this next time. So what is this drool-worthy roll? Shrimp tempura and spicy crab topped with fresh salmon and tuna and drizzled with spicy wasabi ginger and eel sauce. It's only 5 pieces, but they're big and totally filling. As for me, I was thrilled to find a rice-free roll on the menu! I chose the Naruto roll, which is fresh tuna, white tuna, salmon, and crab, wrapped in cucumber rather than rice, topped with scallions and tobiko, and served with ponzu sauce. I'm a salmon freak, so I asked to just do salmon instead of the tunas. It was fresh and refreshing, just how I like it. Okay, now I want sushi...

Charlie D.

Yelp
Absolutely Horrible! Ordered take out tonight and had it delivered door dash. Salads had brown edged lettuce and ginger dressing was like water. My rolls that contained cream cheese were no good as the cream cheese was spoiled. The entire meal was thrown away in fear of getting sick. I would like my money refunded as this was the worst experience I have had locally with a Sushi restaurant.
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
I am a fan! I loved my tornado sushi. Very nice and fresh, good pickled ginger, friendly waitress and good music. My plate was fairly large too and this place reminds me of the San Francisco sushi places I used to go to!
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
Ordered a take out on the phone. Arrived in 15 min. Restaurant was empty. No customer but they didn't even start preparing. My meal was $22.24. Picture attached for a reference.

Sarah J.

Yelp
I would give zero stars. Maybe negative depending on how sick I get from trying out the items that arrived. Ordered through an app and the sashimi order was missing entirely. Only part of a platter arrived. They sent cooked pieces of fish, and stinky raw fish. Don't eat here. But if you do, pick up your own order because the "chef" says the restaurant can't do anything after the order is picked up. This same chef readily acknowledged that half my order was missing. And then tried to claim that I should have just specified what I wanted (I thought I did, by ordering sashimi and nigiri--apparently I was supposed to say I wanted fresh raw fish, some of it with rice). Gross. Yuck. Just don't. And if you're still thinking about it, please know that my spouse who will eat pretty much EVERYTHING took the tray from our daughter and threw it away because he was afraid of food poisoning. No. No. No. Unless you want overpriced chum.
google avatar

Russell C.

Yelp
Perfect little spot for your typical sushi crave. Prices were lower than average and affordable. Quality was great stuff, just a little heavy on the rice in each roll (that's my only complaint), fills ya up quick. With this said, I will be back!
google avatar

Elle F.

Yelp
I try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt because I know these are tough times for the food service industry and so many others. With that said, it seems like the issues we had with our food last night are rather common with this establishment. (I wish we had checked Yelp before we ordered!) This was a takeout order, so I cannot comment on the ambiance or general look and feel of the location. We ordered several sushi rolls, the sashimi appetizer, and seaweed salad. (All of that came with a single set of chopsticks, which was strange, but okay.) The seaweed salad itself was good, but half the container was filled with lettuce and shredded cucumber, so the serving size was very deceiving. The rice on the sushi rolls was mushy and had no flavor whatsoever. It was layered on pretty thick, so that dominated the taste of the rolls. The contents of the roll, even when eaten separately from the mountains of rice, were bland; I've never had a sushi experience where there was a bunch leftover until last night. The sashimi was decent, but considering the quality of everything else, made us rather nervous. I didn't feel particularly well after dinner. I'm sad to say, I'd steer clear of this spot.

Yelp
Worst dining experience I've ever had. My girlfriend and I ordered beer from a menu that only stocked half of what's listed. But all this is moot since the beer we ordered was never served to us. They had one guy serving and cooking. Yep, just one guy on a Saturday afternoon. And it honestly seemed like it was his first day on the job. We ordered a special Ram roll which had shrimp tempura, crab, avocado and asparagus but only came with two fried shrimps on both ends of the roll (no shrimp in the middle rolls) and cucumber instead of asparagus. We also ordered some generic eel roll that had more spicy mayo in it than anything else and a shrimp tempura app, which the server told us they were out of when he dropped off our two rolls. Yet they conveniently had just enough shrimp to make the awful special Ram roll we ordered. The rolls were rolled atrociously. They would fall apart as soon as you picked them up. This is what we received after waiting 30+ minutes for 2 rolls with only a lady at the bar and another couple in the restaurant. My girlfriend's water glass had dirt around the rim of it so that mixed with water served with zero ice makes even the water in this dump unappetizing. She was brought a new water which was barely a step up in cleanliness. They were pumping the world's worst pop music, which is something I'm used to nowadays, however, it was on a terrestrial radio station so the 10 minutes of commercials loudly playing in our ears was insanely unpleasant. I can't stress this enough, never eat at this place. Literally the worst restaurant in Richmond BY FAR. And even that is overselling it.

Annie J.

Yelp
I ordered a couple of things and a tuna roll for delivery and when I opened the container for the sushi a dime-sized roach peaked out from the sushi, I shut it and moved it to my kitchen table. I then opened the container again, the small roach crawled onto my table and I had to kill it. I hope this is an isolated incident.
google avatar

Katie J.

Yelp
Showed up excited to have some sushi and the waitress comes to the table and says "we are out of rice." YOUR ONE JOB AT A SUSHI RESTAURANT IS TO HAVE FISH AND RICE. I guess that explains why there were no customers in there. Left immidiately...very disappointing.
google avatar

Yelp
We made the mistake of *attempting* to dine here one night last month. We walked in and it wasn't busy, and they sat up pretty soon after greeting us and wiping down a table. We ordered drinks. One of us ordered wine and it was the smallest pour we've ever seen! It wasn't because that's how they pour it. No, we saw another table with a full glass, filled to the brim. The waitress said they were almost out. Not sure why they couldn't finish off the bottle. We ordered a Love Boat, which came with soup and salad. Both the soup and salad came out reasonably quickly and were fine. We waited over an hour for our meal and never got it. The waitress came by and served us another round of beers without updating us on the meal. We ended up leaving and canceling our order. It was way late to out somewhere out at this point. Their excuse was that they had to fulfill online orders first. Oh, and we went to the bathroom and there was no paper towels. Instead of replacing the empty roll, the waitress gave us one napkin to dry our hands. It's also very dirty. Don't go here!!

Yelp
Momotaro Sushi is my go-to place for affordable, quality sushi. Is it the absolute best sushi in town? Maybe not. But it is solid, tasty and the prices are reasonable. The place is tiny, but so far I've lucked out and haven't had trouble getting a table. Service is friendly most of the time. The menu has all the sushi standards (California Roll, Philadelphia Roll, etc.), along with some creative specials. I frequently get the Hot Mama Roll, which has chunks of peppered tuna topped with spicy salmon, spicy mayo and Sriracha. I also really like the Katrina Roll: scallops, avocado, tempura cruch and tobiko topped with yellowtail and salmon and eel sauce. The Kani Salad is very good and full of tangy, umami flavor. I've also ordered lots of pieces and all have tasted fresh and good. The unagi is very flavorful. If you're into sushi, become a fan on Sushi Momotaro's Facebook page. They often advertise specials like $1 a la carte sushi. To the poster who wrote about the cockroach, I know it's gross when this happens to you, but I just have to throw out that it happens at some point at every food establishment, even the five-star restaurants. It sucks, but it's true. If it happened to me, I probably wouldn't go back either, especially if I were still charged for half my meal, but to others, this really shouldn't deter you from coming. Every time I've gone, the food has been fresh and delicious. Plus, there's a chocolate-chip starfish in the aquarium!

Yelp
Ryan C. & I just moved to the area a few weeks ago and are slowly trying all the local fare - decided to come here for his birthday dinner since we both adore sushi. the place isn't much to look at; definitely has quaint charm, but its small & simple in decoration. we both ordered water, which they serve as regular tap water in glasses with no ice. maybe i'm spoiled, but i was a little turned off by that. i'm also sick though, so maybe i just wanted some nice cold water. but none of that matters when it comes to the sushi. we ordered 4 rolls, which was brought to us in a boat. :) the 'king of sushi' had a delicious flavor, and we got another special roll with eel & avocado that was my favorite - with the eel sauce, the combination of flavors was excellent. we also ordered our standards, the philly roll & shrimp tempura roll, which didn't disappoint. every roll we got was a reasonable price too. i was surprised to see they were charging $5 for edamame (many places i have been to serve it for free!), but maybe bc its a small place, they need the money? overall, the food was freakin scrumptious and affordable, so what more can you ask for?? i just have to say, i am starting to love carytown. :)

Yelp
One of my top 5 places for sushi in RVA! Atmosphere is quiet and quaint, never busy, perfect for a nice date night. Service is wonderful and the sushi is so delicious! I call it my "secret sushi" place! I definitely recommend!

Yelp
I was commenting to a friend that my expectations of sushi were set at a much higher bar after eating it on the west coast, some of the freshest sushi i've ever had. I tried eating at a few places near my house in Midlothian (Chopstix and Sushi-O) but was disappointed, I almost sent the food back at Chopstix because I gagged on spicy salmon. That's a pretty safe bet, a maki roll with some spicy filling. Not so much... but I digress. My friend just got back from living in Japan and said this place reminded him of being back there, so I of course had to try. Am I glad I did, I ordered nigri yellowtail and salmon, as well as a spicy salmon roll for grins and giggles. Everything was extremely fresh, tasted just like the ocean. The service was fantastic and very friendly. I didn't give it 5 stars because the menu wasn't very creative, and their choices of sake were limited to 3 (1 cold, 1 unfiltered, and 1 warm). However I will say that if you just want great sushi, this is definitely the place to go.

Yelp
We live literally right around the corner from here and love sushi. Normally we take our business to Akida but that night we decided to give Momotaro a shot. Boy am I glad we did. The fish was so fresh, the service was impeccable, and the sushi was creative. We tried 5 different rolls and couldn't be happier. The tuna was the most beautiful red and the salmon had a delicate smokiness to it. We tried the Boston roll which i believe had tuna, lettuce and a spicy mayo, it was like an asian/southern fusion coleslaw wrapped in seaweed. Delicious. If this tells you anything, my boyfriend cant eat sushi without fully submerging it in soy sauce. there was none used at our table that night.

Yelp
While scouring the web for some lunch specials, I stumbled upon Momotaro's FB page: "1/2 off sushi rolls til 7"... sweet! So off I went. The restaurant itself is nice enough... standard for a small sushi bar. I was the only one in the restaurant and was told I can take a seat anywhere. Cool. Waitress comes by with a glass of water (no ice, but cold, so whatever) and menu. I say 'there's a special going on now for 1/2 off certain rolls right?'. Looking a little puzzled, she reluctantly says 'yeah'. I ask which rolls are on special as I'm looking around the restaurant for any signage. I point to what I think are the specials and she says "ohh yeahh" and just walks away. Weird. Anyway, I get up to grab the special menu. I notice it says happy hour specials 5-7. Waitress comes back and I place my order from the special menu. Sushi comes out... pretty tasty, nothing too special. Rolls were a nice size, and fish tasted fresh enough. Was a little miffed that I had to get up to get my own soy sauce (not that I'm lazy, but, c'mon...) from the bar. Anyway, I finish my meal & get the check. I knew it. Full price. I flag down the waitress and ask "I thought these were half off?"... you know, because facebook said so and the waitress confirmed... Sushi chef tells me it's from 5-7. Up your customer service and try to be a little more clear with specials. There seemed to be confusion on multiple levels.
