7 Great Bánh Mì In The East Bay - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Mom’s Bun Mi is a counter-service spot located in a strip mall off of International, and it’s a destination for bánh mì that’ll fill you up for less than $7. We’re big fans of the BBQ pork, which is slightly sweet and slathered with mayo. If you need a serious caffeine boost, grab an iced Vietnamese coffee—their version is surprisingly stronger than most, and will easily power you through an afternoon slump." - julia chen 1

The young man that works the counter is the sweetest and most cheerful employee. His service made our dine in experience even better. The sandwiches were good for the price really loved the banh mi bread, not sure if they make it in house but it was delicious soft yet chewy. And the Vietnamese coffee was on the sweet side for me I had to fill up the rest with water. Other than that it was good

Google
Best bahn MI in Oakland . B9 no mayo is the vegan tofu option .tofu is cooked unlike anywhere else I've ever had it .It's really really good ! This is Oaklands #1 bahn mi spot hands down . Staff are also the nicest people ever . We are so lucky to have moms near by !

Google
Gorgeous place smelt amazing and really awesome staff, the cooperative capabilities between the staff made me flabbergasted. I was so astonished that anyone could get the food out this fast and politely. The food on the other hand, I hope it was just my food today but that food reminded me of Indian street food. I wouldn’t even offer this to the homeless. Why is the meat juice taste like 5 day old bologna left in the kitchen cabinet I don’t know. But if you got fresher food this place would be top 5 places to eat.

Google
Super clean place, warm stuff and delicious food. I tried it for the first time today, I got the Pad Thai and 3 spring rolls (two shrimp, one veggie). My food was made in ten minutes, the Pad Thai had peanuts, scallions and tofu. I added some lime and it made it perfect! Very tasty! The spring rolls herbs and shrimp were super fresh and served with a side of delicious peanut sauce, perfect sweet-savory balance. $8 for the Pad Thai that is definitely 2 meals bulk, and $7.50 for the spring rolls, a great meal for $20 with tip. I will definitely come back!

Google
Lovely, inviting place with very reasonable prices. I ordered the grilled chicken “banh mi” sandwich and avocado smoothie (requested less sweet). Both were among the best I’ve had. This place seems family owned and they’re all very warm and friendly - especially the handsome young man at the register.

Google
The place was lovely, everything about it was everything I imagined. Great staff team, everyone was super kind and even offered us a small sample of a special drink. One of the ladies even talked highly of all the other shops around them. It was up until the food, everything went downhill from there. In all honesty, maybe it was a fluke, the meat was just horrendous, I couldn't even imagine how anyone could take another bite of the sandwich. Be alert, check your food, but great support team, very friendly!

Google
My wife and I were at the restaurant last Sunday. The food was very tasteful. The service was excellent. She was very courteous, friendly, and professional. We will come back for more for sure.

Google
The meat was not abundant in the sandwich and was lacking in flavor. I was not a fan of their non-traditional banh mi French bread. For the same price and better choices and quality, I’d suggest to give Banh Mi Ba Le down the street a try! Sooo good!

Yelp
So I convinced my parents to go here one Sunday after a few hours at the Oakland Coliseum flea market. Parking in front, always good. By the time we got there, which was about 3 in the afternoon, they were pretty much out of everything, except banh mi. That was fine with my mom and I cuz that's why we came here. But they did have the cold coffee! Which was heavy on the ice but strong dong! The B6, grilled Chicken Bahn mi is hella tasty, the bread was toasted, worth mentioning. My dad ate the jalapeños from my sandwich and said they were spicy AF. If you sit at a table and have a street view, you may see a free show. Make sure to lock your car. They open early which is my guess as to why they are out of many items. What get's them the 5th star is: 2 x Chicken banh mi 1 Viet Coffee 1 bottle water Twenty bucks -- Cash Discount!! In the City this is $35 easy. How can you not tip them at least $5?

Yelp
I put in a large order of beef, chicken, and tofu bahn mi for a party. The sandwiches were all ready for my pickup. They even put the sandwiches in trays for me. The sandwiches were all very tasty but I liked the chicken the best. Their pricing is pretty fair compared to other bahm mi places. I also ordered half a tray of popcorn chicken for my party. It went so quickly. I should've order more. I also got a fresh sugar cane juice which was perfect for the hot weather. All of their staff was very friendly and helpful. Their pricing went up recently so double check with them when doing an order.

Yelp
Placed an order over the phone, drove 6 minutes to pick up. Wasn't quite ready, but the guy at the counter was so so nice. There wasn't anyone else in the shop eating, but plenty of people picking up to go. Fairly quiet inside, considering the busy street. I wouldn't mind dining inside if I wasn't on a short lunch break. Ordered the following: B1, B2, B9, B10, and popcorn chicken and some shrimp and pork spring rolls. I think it all came out to around $45 or something. Everyone devoured their bahn mi. The popcorn chicken had a hint of lemon I think? And some spice in the back. It was nice. The spring rolls, delicious. That peanut sauce was so thick and delicious. Definitely will return. I didn't get any photos of the food since we had to eat so fast during lunch.

Yelp
Opened early with clean fresh fast service ! Good ole flavors. Huge variety to choose from With fair prices in today's economy . Ample parking right in front. Easy access to freeway

Yelp
Ordered a party tray of their pork and shrimp Spring rolls for my Holiday Party and it was a huge success! Everyone loved it! They put the perfect balance of shrimp, pork, vermicelli, lettuce, bean sprouts. They also wrapped each spring roll with Saran Wrap to prevent it from sticking to one another in the party tray. I love spring rolls and really enjoy the fact when it's made right. You'll know when you compare to other places that puts way too much lettuce, vermicelli or bean sprouts over shrimp and pork. You literally get pork and shrimp in every bite! A must try!!

Yelp
Stopped in here to grab a bahn mi, and then also saw the fried rice and figured I'd give that a try. The sandwich was solid! Nice flavors though I wish it had a bit more meat. The fried rice was so good, would absolutely return just for this!

Yelp
Can't beat the price of a Bahn mi and 3 fried egg rolls for under $10! Food is great. I order from my office and by the time I get here the order is ready. Small spot with 10 or so tables. Highly recommend. Closed on Wednesday!

Yelp
Excellent food at fair price, especially the bun mi. Easy parking. Clean and pleasant interior.

Yelp
Love the remodel and the friendly service here. Though I prefer the banh mi dac biet at Banh Mi Ba Le, the cooked foods and sandwiches with cooked meats are really well done here. I ordered large trays for catering and they were very well-presented and super delicious. $65 for each large tray and available with 2 days notice. I got mi xao mem chay (vegetarian stir fried noodles), mi xoa mem thap cam (combination stir fried noodles), popcorn chicken and tom rang muoi (salt and pepper shrimp). The shrimp were humungous. They are very generous with the amount of veggie and protein in the noodle dishes. And my party loooved the salt and pepper chicken - it was nice to have a boneless chicken option and this is a unique catering item I didn't see in my research of other Asian caterers in the area. Last highlight I'll share - they pulverize fresh sugar cane for their nuoc mia and add a squeeze of calamansi. So refreshing and delicious.

Yelp
Terrible food, looks like leftover from the side. Be careful, one of my friends has diarrhea 2 days

Yelp
I love their chicken Bahn mi. And I ordered their vietnamese soup to go usually to go soup isn't good but this was still good their Thai tea is also good service is good don't mind the working women outside of the business it's safe

Yelp
Was craving a banh mi for lunch, and Mom's answered the call to satisfy that craving. I usually opt for Ba Le while in the area, but since it's only open on weekends, I opted for Mom's, as a drive by it all the time. The viet coffee was standard, and the banh mi was excellent. Meatball and egg has become a top option for me when available, and it stayed fresh and hot for the whole 15 min bike ride back home. Service was quick and friendly, and not a lot of seating, so I assume this place is primarily for takeout. I'll be back for that curry chicken before long!

Yelp
I have mixed reviews about this place so the first time I went there I got like a lunch plate with veggies and shrimp with dry noodles versus the sandwich that most of my coworkers; since then I've had like a spring roll tofu situation that I don't care for because the tofu is like seasoned with some type of sandy texture Mixture not for me; another time I had a crispy veggie eggroll and it was good hot grease always good so last week we went in for the tofu sandwich and didn't realize it was gonna be the same tofu from the spring roll because it said fried tofu Thinking it's gonna be something different ordered it and I honestly will not do it again. I don't know what it is about that tofu mixture it's stringy, looking barbecue-ish, but the sandiness and the texture "I can't" so from now on if I'm feeling froggish, I will do the sandwich veggies only with extra veggies maybe a slice of avocado if they can give it to me.

Yelp
Came here mid day on a Friday to pick up some banh mi sandos. Had to get a few sandos to bring to the A's game. We usually go to Banh mi ba le but they have limited hours. Mom's has a dedicated parking spot for pick up orders as the small parking lot for the shopping center looked really busy so that was helpful. The owner was really nice and friendly. Sandwiches were good bread was toasted well and soft on the inside. The veggies tasted fresh and had a great crisp. I got the grilled pork and it was flavorful. Just wish there's a little bit more meat. Overall 4.5 stars.

Yelp
Delicious ban mi, super friendly staff and cute location. All the ingredients were delicious and the bread was absolutely perfect!

Yelp
I was shocked when it said grand opening. I came in I was greeted by a kind young man. Before there was an older man that was mad just because you came in to order food. He was no where in site, thank God. They must've change ownership but not sure. I ordered grilled chicken banh mi. The bread had a crispy exterior and the inside was soft. The chicken wasn't overly seasoned which I like. In the past you couldn't enter the store, now there's tables and nice large menu and warm feeling when you enter. I definitely will be back! I love the friendly service.

Yelp
WHAT HAPPENS to this place ? Today, it broke my heart. I hope the new owner read this review and make some positive changes. First time was ammmmazing ! I ordered 2 banh mi, spring rolls and egg rolls. Everything was on point. The egg roll was expensive, but it was worth every bites. My friends and I dream about their banh mi. On the second visit. The egg rolls were in edible. I took one bite and throw away the rest. It was a typical Chinese egg rolls with soggy white cabbages, loose rolls that allow oils to leak into so the first bite was very oily. I thought the eggs roll was a flute... but i was left to be more disappointed and heart broken. I ordered the most expensive sandwich -- roasted pork. And was outrageous that the sandwich was stale with dry meat AND NO pate!! What kind of vietnamese sandwich has NO pate! To make it even worst, the bread was soggy and salty due to the over loaded soy sauce. I couldn't continue eating rat. TRASH along with the egg rolls. Also ordered sugar cane hence the 2 stars. That was fresh, but for 7 dollars.... it was half ice. I really wanted to like this new business and I was hoping to be a regular from the first impression... but this 2nd visit was a waste of money and just overall... sad.

Yelp
Came here and tried the cold cut banh mi. Flavors were good but the amount of meat they gave inside the sandwich was little compared to other shops. My sister got the grilled lemongrass beef and her portion size was better than mine and she really likes the flavor. Will be back to try other banh mis. Friendly service and fair prices.

Yelp
This place recently renovated and it looks great! I've always been a fan of their banh mi but awesome that they've been able to make a nice space to go along with their great sandwiches. This is a family run spot and they consistently make excellent banh mi. I just recently ordered a tofu sandwich. The bread is fresh and crunchy. The pickled veggies are tasty. The tofu has a bbq flavor to it. I'll definitely order again! There's a parking lot there and I suggest looking for a spot in the lot. People are always in and out of the lot.

Yelp
Great classic pork bahn mi's sold here!! And yummy Viet coffee as well Great customer service
google avatar

Theresa S.

Yelp
The sandwich was good: toasty bread, crunchy vegetables, savory meat. However, the place only accepted cash on the day I was there so many customers walked away hungry. The location is pretty sketchy, with several sex workers milling about. And you have to order at the door and hang sound outside or in your car while they prepare the food.
google avatar

Nam V.

Yelp
This place wasn't like before. The pork belly doesn't taste the same, the sauce they use on their sandwiches aren't the same. The spring rolls is the same, but dipping sauce tastes different. Service is great, great folks, very nice, just wish food was better.
google avatar

Enrique C.

Yelp
I used to come here when you had to order at the door and a tired looking dad would yell out to someone in the back what your order was. At the time it wasn't the best experience but the food was always good. I've noticed signs saying "Grand Opening" when driving by which was confusing to me since it's been open as long as I've lived near here. But as soon as I stepped inside it was clear this was not the same old Mom's Bun Mi. Another review says they're under new ownership. I worried that might affect the quality of the sandwich, but nope. Got the BBQ Pork and the meat portion was plenty and as delicious as always. The seating is brand new. I had to take it to go, but would definitely sit inside despite the rough exterior landscape. Most importantly, I was treated with so much respect that it wasn't until I left that I realized just how friendly they were to me. In the prior iteration you'd kind of get a grunt like "what do you want?" but I liked the sandwiches enough that I didn't let that bother me. Today I was greeted with a smile and the cashier went out of her way to step out from behind the counter, bring me a spoon, and bag my drink and yogurt. When my sandwich was ready she came out and placed that in the bag as well, again thanking me for coming with a big smile. The food is just as good and the experience has gotten tenfold better. Oh, and I prefer this spot to Ba Le. Could be that each place has some sandwiches that they do better than the other.

Yelp
First time here and we ordered 2 trays of spring rolls for our party. Their portion size is really big and food is delicious. We also ordered banh mi and Viet coffee. Both really gooThe bread is so good!!!
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
Yummm :')) Although this spot isn't my favorite banh mi spot, their baguettes (just the bread) are the best I've had (at least from the last few times I've had it). The baguettes are nice and thick yet soft and fluffy, and really crunchy on the outside :') It's different from some other banh mi spots because at other places, the baguette is lighter and tends to deflate(?) when you bite it I would say; but here, they're thick if that makes sense LOL. I like to order #1 and #10! #1 is great but there could be more slices of meat, and the meatballs in #10 are really juicy and flavorful ! On the pricier side but definitely worth a try !

Yelp
My son had another appointment in the area, and I immediately drove to Banh Mi Bale. To my disappointment, they were closed so I was perusing Yelp whether to stay in the area to look for another Banh Mi place or drive back home. This place popped up and it was just a few blocks away, so why not? Customers are placing their orders online for pick-up or ordering at the door. Literally at the door due to Covid, similar to other places. I was waiting in line and by the time I got to the door, the guy taking my order was rude. He changed his tune a bit after I ordered 4 different sammiches, but dude really needs to take a chill pill. I got the following: Banh mi dac biet (combination pork belly $6.00) Banh mi thit nu'ong (roast pork $5.00) Banh mi thit ba chi khia (pork belly $5.50) Banh mi thit bo xao sa (lemongrass beef $5.50) When I got home, I was excited to try them and one thing I immediately noticed after cutting them in half was that the filling was miniscule compared to Banh Mi Bale. Looking at the old pictures from other Yelpers, it appears they have skimped on ingredients and now it's mostly bread. After biting into it, I was tasting mostly bread and it was doughy. I popped them in the air-fryer and it crisped up the exterior, but it couldn't save the sandwiches. The flavors were lackluster, and nothing stood out...just chewing on too much bread in every bite. Even the jalapenos weren't spicy. Maybe one time they were good and decent, as other Yelpers had written and mentioned on their reviews. Any "mom" wouldn't be proud of serving these to their kids.

Yelp
Ordered the grilled chicken, lemon grass beef & lychee ice tea drink - all delicious! Bread was Krispie on the outside & soft & fluffy inside.

Yelp
classic viet food to go spot with a modern taste. I ordered #1 banh mi dac biet (special sandwich) and ca phe sua da. comfort and inexpensive meal for breakfast. Service was fast and friendly highly recommend

Yelp
This spot recently renovated a month or so ago and it looks nothing like it used to. Bright and cheery, with a much expanded menu. I think they used to only do Bahn Mi, but now they have all sorts of Vietnamese food options, along with tea and boba drinks. Huge plus is that they now take credit and Apple Pay. Parking is still a bit of a shitshow in this plaza though. Mom's has always been my Ba Le alternative when they're closed. I got the grilled pork and it totally hit the spot. Is it better than Ba Le? Probably not, but it's close, and the staff are super friendly, give them a try!

Yelp
Skimp. Barely any meat in this sando! Spend your money else where. No flavor on the pork
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
My parents have bought me their Banh Mis from here multiple times and the food has been great. Service is quick when we order and the location is in a plaza. There is a lot of parking and they are on the bottom right of the plaza. We get the combination Banh mi with everything and it is so fresh and delicious. Their baguettes are so warm and moist. The meat inside is very generous and there is a good amount of pate and Mayo spread inside. Highly recommend this location for a delicious Banh mi!

Yelp
Called in for takeout during COVID and a heat wave weekend. Called in a takeout order and and went to pick up 20-30 mins later and the food was ready. The entrance is blocked by a stand for picking up food and paying. It was a quick an easy process to pickup the food. The store is located in a small plaza with 20 min parking limit spots. The lot didn't seem to be busy at 4pm when I picked up the food. About the food: BBQ pork Banh mi: Each bite had a little bit of meat, veggies and baguette. The ingredients tasted fresh. There was a satisfying crunch when biting into the baguette. There are jalapenos that five the sandwich a little kick (very mild spicy level). Dac biet (special) Banh mi: had more meat than the new pork Banh mi which is reflected in the cost. I think the only thing I would have liked better is if the taste of the pickled veggies came out more but overall a great banh mi spot.
google avatar

Richa N.

Yelp
This place provides a quick and affordable lunch. There are a couple of vegetarian options too, which I like. There isn't really a place to sit down- it's just take out, so be prepared for that.
google avatar

Zoe T.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped into this unassuming spot for a quick lunch and was greeted by friendly smiles, great service, and a clean atmosphere. I ordered a grilled pork bahn mi sandwich and a drink for under $12 . The flavors were vibrant and fresh, everything you want in a bahn mi. The role was still warm, perfectly toasted, the traditional style of bread for the sandwich, but better as it wasn't dropping pieces of the crust like many of the others, that I've tried. Without a doubt it was freshly baked.
google avatar

E K.

Yelp
I got a $7 combination banh mi and it was very lacking. It had a single slice of each deli cut and minimal pate.
google avatar

Jem M.

Yelp
Slow, but pretty good! I would definitely order wayyyyyy ahead before even approaching the place bc the order took way longer than it should have taken.
google avatar

Yelp
No frills Bun Mi spot located in East Oakland. Quick service with decent seating and two large tv's. My go-to spot for a bun mi fix on the cheap !
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Solid banh mis at an affordable price. It was a bit empty during lunch time which was a bit concerning, but the spring rolls and banh mis I had were absolutely delicious and fresh. I tried the meatball, Chinese pork and combo sandwiches and each one was great. I'd have this again if I was in the area.

Yelp
I don't get the reviews here. I drive by this place all the time and finally stoped by. I'm always looking for a good Bánh Mì and Viet Coffee. The sandwich was pretty good. Pricey, but times have changed. The # 11 is solid (cold cut). Sandwich, drink and bag of chips ($14). It's mom and pop shop. The service was cool. Roll up and check it out. It's worth it. You can't sit inside. You can only walk up and take out. Parking lot is small.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best banhmi around the bay! Fresh bread, nice staff and good prices you cant beat that, the ingredients they used here are legit.

Yelp
I will never turn down the opportunity to try a Vietnamese sandwich. There's such a huge discrepancy between a good and bad Banh Mi. The biggest things I personally look for are sweetness/crispness of the pickled vegetables, the fatness from the pate, and the creaminess from the aioli. It also helps if the portion of cold cuts is generous. That being said, I can't say Mom's Bun Mi hit all of those things. However, it's nice to see and support a family own restaurant. I pulled up right before they were about to close and saw the owners/family enjoying a huge feast. It was funny to me to see them using the space to celebrate whatever occasion it was. I ordered Combination Sandwich which is my go to and paid in cash. I waited a few minutes and it came out in little bag. I ran to my car, opened it up, took a picture, and dove in. What the sandwich makes me think of is how this is probably what a Banh Mi would taste like in Vietnam or if your mom/aunt made it. Which is obviously not lost in the name of the restaurant. The size was not super large, but maybe I'm spoiled by Duc Huong in San Jose. It was decent, but not spectacular. I don't believe they use a lot of aioli and I distinctly recall tasting Maggi (I hope I didn't imagine that). The amount of meat was light and they put pickled onions in their garnish which I'm not a huge fan of. I typically prefer just radish and carrots. I slammed it and it decently filling. It scratched my Vietnamese sandwich itch a little bit, but I was super satisfied. I don't know if I'd be returning to this place, but it's nice to know that I can expect a decent/safe product in the area if I ever am craving a Banh Mi.

Yelp
Located in a tight parking lot in a busy intersection, Mom's only offers window service now. I tried the BBQ pork sandwich. It was a little dry and bland for me. The bread was fresh and tasty. I was hoping for something more flavorful. Parking is tight in the parking lot. Try nearby sidewalks.

Yelp
Food yummy ! and great customer service. Been here a few time .. I also love that fried rice with chicken leg..they do good party tray .. order ahead
google avatar

Vinkin Ken T.

Yelp
Their menu prices posted on their window is outdated but their menu on their board inside, is more accurate. They actually have another location in the Tenderloin in San Francisco but have not offered banh mi's since the pandemic. I've only tried their pork belly and though this time it was a bit salty from the maggie sauce it's still very yummy. They make their pork belly in house and their bread is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cash only or preferred. $5.50 is a steal.

Yelp
First time trying the banh mi here, Stopped by because I usually shop at Mithepheap market on the opposite corner. Its a family ran place, due to COVID, they don't do sit ins, the dad and the daughter was eating their dinner when I ordered by the entrance, watching an Asian show. I think they have strange hours because I usually don't see them open and happened to just be in luck at this time. I got a number 3 banh mi thit nuong and 16 banh mi cha lua paté. The banh mi was a bit dry for me. Like they didn't put Vietnamese mayo at all. And the cha lua wasn't evenly distributed, it was against one side while the pickled veggies was on the other. I wanted to like this place since ba le only opens 3 days and cam huong was mediocre as well. Lee's is overpriced. Maybe I'll give it another shot, next time I'll just ask them for mayo. But this place is limiting on its menu selection so... idk, I like options and picking up a bunch of things while I'm out.

Yelp
Sandwiches tried: - Combination Sandwich - Roasted Chicken Sandwich - Meatball Sandwich The combination sandwich was also good! It's a classic sandwich that is fairly hard to mess up. I would've preferred more pickled carrots/daikon to cut through all the mayo/pate/cold cuts (more pickled carrots/daikon would've been preferred for all the sandwiches). The roasted chicken sandwich was good! It wasn't anything special and was similar to any chicken banh mi you could get at other banh mi places. The chicken was well-seasoned and not dry at all. I thought the meatball sandwich was a tad on the salty side (although I generally prefer meatball banh mi to be slightly sweet). The amount of meatball in each sandwich was pretty solid though. The bread was ok, not very crispy on the outside but it was nice and soft on the inside. It was also quite thick compared to some of the other banh mi places I've been to.

Yelp
Hit or miss. Sometimes fresh bread, sometimes stale. Service is at the counter. Good prices for the bay, but poor consistency

Yelp
Noodles were bursting with flavor and reminded me of home cooking! So saucy so delicious. However, the thai tea was definitely the star of the show. You wouldn't think that a bun mi shop would have boba shop quality tea but this place is it. If you're looking for a strong, real tea flavor with good quality boba-- this is the place.
