MONA Gourmet – Munich - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"In the gourmet restaurant of the Hilton Munich City hotel, the orientation of the menu is already hinted at in the name: "MO" stands for Monaco, "NA" for Napoli. An ambitious team prepares, for instance, yellowtail mackerel, tonda di Chioggia, pea and salted lemon in the open kitchen. The service is highly attentive and competent." - Michelin Inspector

We really wanted to like this restaurant. But, we did not. We had one dish where the gnocchi (in the Gnocchi Ragout) was completely uncooked. It tasted terrible. The service was mediocre, the plating needed work, and none of the other dishes were stand outs. For this price, we expected (and hoped for) so much more.

The beef fillet tasted fine, but it wasn't worth the €39 price tag, especially since nothing came with the dish, requiring an additional charge for vegetables. Presentation was underwhelming.

Beware if you have dietary requirements. I expect more from a high end restaurant. I visited with my family of 7 on a Thursday evening. We were admitted to the restaurant despite our casual attire and were given the table that we requested (a lovely oval table at the front of the restaurant). One of us suffers from coeliac disease. Allergens are not listed on the menu. Our waiter had poor understanding of dietary allergens in the menu. They were, however, able to produce some gluten free bread for our coeliac sufferer upon request. The childrens colouring pencils were blunt. They were "unable" to make a lemon presse with  sparkling or soda water for our 6 year old who doesnt drink Sprite which I found very surprising that an upmarket establishment such as this could not squeeze a whole lemon on request. When her mother's limoncello spritz drink arrived with pieces of lemon in it the child was most perturbed. Our waiter offered us different opened (wines by the glass) to try to see which we liked best. It was sometimes difficult to get waiter's attention. They didnt often look up to see if one needed something. The food was good. All dishes were well seasoned and beautifully presented. We had pork belly with potato puree and vegetables; poussin was tender and succulent; grouper was tender and tasty with a complementary white sauce and some artistically displayed vegetables and cod roe. They dont give free tap water with the coffee. The restaurant itself does not have free wifi. We tried going to the Hilton reception but the codes given to us didnt work. We were presented with the wrong bill but this was rectified

The price value ratio at this restaurant is inconsistent. A 0,75 liter bottle of Bordeaux Supérieur Château Le Gardera 2020, which retails online for around €8,90, is listed at €70. This represents a markup far beyond the industry standard. At the same time, higher tier wines on the list are priced almost at cost, which makes the overall pricing strategy feel unbalanced. Lamb chops are priced at €35 without any side, which is above the usual range for Munich and not justified by the quality delivered. Even the Taste Twelve offer was not handled according to the rules. Instead of a second main course being complimentary, only a €9 discount per dish was applied. The restaurant was almost empty during both of my visits. Considering the number of excellent Italian restaurants in Munich, the overall experience here is unfortunately not competitive.

They served us cold puree. When we asked why the puree is cold the answer was: " shouldn't be. Should be warm." No excuse. No new warm puree. When they served is the other plates theymake a joke with the cold puree if the rest was warm enough. Another thing is that when we order a wine first they served us half bootle without inform us and when we asked for the wine list they did not tell us that from the list some wines are missing. I wouldn't suggest it. I am curious how it get the michelin star. The price was 100euro per person with a bottle of wine.

I would have given everything 5 stars but after ordering a medium rare ribeye steak it came back well done. I personally do not like steak well done. Everything else was perfect 😊

It was all in all a nice visit. Food was good, service friendly just a bit too hectic and the smell from the open kitchen was quite overwhelming, clothes all smell a lot like food now. But otherwise not overpriced and a nice atmosphere

We went to Mona to enjoy the "Essklasse" menu. It was very disappointing. 1. Soup tasteless, tasted like a tomato can from the supermarket. 2 was ok. Main course (3) was pork meat that was 90% fat, we gave it back after esting one small piece. Same happened to our eating neighbours. The waiter appologized for the low quality of the main course, but no discount and no alternative offered ... only an espresso on the house. Very dissapointing. Even though we live in Munich, we will not visit Mona again.
