Google
I asked a vendor at the Saturday market where she would send first time Ann Arbor visitors for lunch & she recommended Monahan's. I am so grateful to her! What a delicious meal & fun counter experience. We had the shrimp gazpacho, vegetable of the day (local asparagus) & the salmon burger. Amazing! I wish we lived closer but will 100% return here again next visit! What a gem Ann Arbor has. Jealous! LC (Cincinnati, OH)

Google
I enjoyed a flavorful Caribbean seafood chowder with a rich tomato base, paired with a fresh and zesty Cajun shrimp salad. Both dishes were delicious and well-prepared. The staff was warm, attentive, and eager to help, making the entire dining experience exceptional.

Google
Their seafood quality is top notch! I go here with friends regularly. Can't go wrong with fish n chips or salmon burger (if you're strapped on $). Their fried calamari is amazing. Clam chowder is also amazing. Their blackened salmon burger tastes great, but it's a bit pricey for how small the piece of salmon is, so I usually just go for the salmon burger. Tartar sauce is really good!! Recommendation: If you're with friends, get a large side of cajun fries plus extra side of tartar sauce for the fries and split with them.

Google
I grabbed fried calamari with Thai peanut sauce. I mean, the picture does it justice. It’s tender, crunchy, well prepared squid. Great service. Definitely worth finding parking!

hailey

Google
got their fried shrimp and scallops! they were both really juicy! very fresh too!

Michelle Lo

Google
Crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside. These fried seafood bites are pure satisfaction!

Google
Everytime we are in the area we go here! My favorite is the skate fish, absolutely delicious! Think my husband got the fish and chips. All fresh cooked for you!

Google
Consistently excellent. Particularly enjoy the daily chowders. The staff clearly takes pride in their work. We are lucky to have such a great seafood market in Ann Arbor.

Yelp
Their oysters are so fresh and delicious! I love coming back now and then for a treat. Their fish and chips is also crispy and I love the dip that goes with it. Their calamari also tastes fresh, though not as crunchy. The Thai peanut sauce that comes with it is okay, I think the calamari tastes better by itself. A must-visit for fresh seafood!

Yelp
Monahan's is inside Kerrytown Market. The fish and chips aren't crispy. They probably need to be twice-fried. The portion sizes are small. I purchased the salmon teriyaki plate ($16.95) and it only comes with rice that does not even fill up the entire plate. No vegetables. The seafood here tastes fresh but the execution, presentation, and lack of extra sides are disappointing.

Yelp
I wish I checked out Monahan's during the six years I lived in Ann Arbor. They sell fresh seafood here, which I knew about, but I didn't know they also had cooked foods available to purchase. After hearing about the delicious soups here from a couple friends, I grabbed lunch with a friend here yesterday late morning. BERNIE'S FABULOUS CHOWDER OF THE DAY (PINT) Today, the chowder of the day was the classic New England Clam Chowder, one of my favorites. It was creamy without being overly fatty. It was rich and hearty, with a good amount of clam and potatoes. Overall, it was one of the better New England Clam Chowders I've had, and I can understand the hype. Each order comes with two small slices of baguette, lightly spread with butter, perfect for enjoying with the soup. FRIED CALAMARI The order comes with a generous portion of fried calamari, mostly "tube" shaped, with a few tentacles mixed in. We enjoyed the tentacles more because they were crispier and packed with more seasoning and flavor. Some of the tube-shaped calamari, however, was on the soggier side and a bit bland. Overall, it's a good dish for sharing. SALMON TERIYAKI Each order comes with a big piece of salmon marinated in teriyaki sauce, swerved with a side of rice topped with black sesame seeds. The salmon was grilled well, but the teriyaki sauce didn't contribute much flavor. Overall, the dish was quite bland, and I wouldn't order this again. I definitely recommend giving the soups a try at Monahan's. There are some tables to enjoy the food indoors.

Yelp
ALWAYS 5 stars for Ann Arbor Kerrytown's Monahan's, from the salmon sandwich to the shrimp to the smelts to the scallops, to the salmon teriyaki, etc., (and even the veggies as a side are delish)...superlative fresh fish plus fast and friendly service. The ambiance is casual, which, for me, is just perfect. It's the best lunch in town, and that's why I eat here whenever I can, which is almost every day!
google avatar

Zanita W.

Yelp
Daily seafood specials and very affordable . Food is made to order and the fries are hand cut, delicious food. I will be going back to try their soft shell crab sandwiches when they have them in season.
google avatar

Raagini Y.

Yelp
Go for lunch. Trust me. It's in that building with all of the various shops so it's just a deli side counter. But wow the food is good. The sauce is amazing. The ambiance is casual but you can eat in everyday wines which I liked with a glass of Prosecco. Service was great. I didn't know what to get and got helped Must visit

Yelp
My absolute fave!! Cheap, fast, and always fresh. Service is super accommodating and there's plenty of alternate seating if their usual area is full. Love Monahan's!!

Yelp
According to William Shakespeare, "A man may fish with the worm that hath eat of a king, and eat of the fish that hath fed of that worm." So, fish is part of the great chain of being and Monahan's needs to be in your chain. Monahan's is part of Kerrytown Market. Quality of fish and caliber of service are the hallmarks here. In particular, the fish wrapped in paper is superb. The fish is fresh and the ingredients they add to the paper are outrageously good. I also bought cod cheeks which were stupendous. According to P.J. O'Rourke, "Fish is the only food that is considered spoiled once it smells like what it is." While contemplating your purchase, please ruminate on this quote.

Yelp
Truly an Ann Arbor foodie treasure. Great fresh fish to take home and cook as well as great dine in/to go options. The fish and chips are fast, delicious and a great price to boot.
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
Consistently incredible and top-quality fish. Love their daily specials. I'd eat here daily if budget allowed.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Steamed mussels and fries were super yummy and a good value for lunch. Casual outdoor seating is available first come first serve to enjoy your cooked order or just hang out in the courtyard. Great fresh seafood at a reasonable price which is hard to find! This is a gem for fresh seafood to go!
google avatar

Yelp
Located inside Kerrytown Merchants in the fabulous Ann Arbor! I had the fish and chips and it was great! You can eat inside but it is in a small confined area. It is more so a place to get a carry-out! Service was quick from placing order to actually getting it! You have to pay for parking but it is reasonable! The food prices are pretty reasonable too! I definitely recommend checking it out sometime and it is fun to browse Sparrow Market!

Douglas M.

Yelp
***** Fresh food. Prepared well. Excellent service. Grab a friend and enjoy the experience. Make sure to take something home with you to prepare a meal too...

Yelp
I stumbled across this shop while exploring Kerrytown Market and was pleasantly surprised! I ordered the special for the day which was a Thai Shrimp lunch. It was just the perfect balance of spicy and tasty. It was a bit crowded inside as it is just a counter with very minimal seating inside the market. I wouldn't go there if I wasn't getting something to go, or a party of 2. If it isn't peak time you could probably get some seating for 4. Would recommend! Good price, great seafood.

Yelp
Fresh Fresh FRESH seafood and ingredients. What more could you ask for?!? The quality matched the atmosphere - amazing! We came in for lunch and boy did we leave full and satisfied. Especially love getting Fried shrimp and not feeling greasy or heavy afterwards. Everything came out perfect. I got the seafood chowder with bread/butter - so filling and creamy. Also the bread was super soft and buttered to perfection. Side of fries - yum. Jump Shrimp that came fried with cocktail sauce. Shrimp were big and juicy and perfectly fried.

Yelp
This place was really fun! A friend and I had lunch. At first it was very overwhelming, loud and confusing as to where we should eat, but we figured it out. There are lots of communal areas to eat in Kerrytown. I got fish and chips and it was pretty good. My friend got the special (oyster po-boy) and I tried a bite and it pretty interesting! I can't wait to go back and try the tilapia to go. Looks delicious. Thanks for this local gem downtown. The vibe is fun.

Yelp
A small menu, but if they specialize in seafood, that's ideal. They have fresh whole fish on ice you can pick and have them cook for you, like the fishing vessel just dropped them off. This place is always absolutely jammed on the weekends. The staff are all really casual and personable. Fun hole-in-the-wall atmosphere.

Yelp
This is a great place for some fresh fish to eat (or take home). We were passing through Ann Arbor and this was a cool place to stop. There are several other vendors/shops here too. The fish and chips were crispy without being oily. The shrimp gazpacho hit the spot on a hot day. There is seating outside right by by the pickup counter. There are some tables inside by the sewing store (Spun).

Jessica K.

Yelp
The only fish & chips in A2 that I've gone back to get multiple times. Super fresh, great price, and everyone working is super nice and helpful. Typically beer-battered, but they also have a regular (beer-free) batter, just have to ask!

Brenda H.

Yelp
Worst service, breakfast was horrible my food came nothing was done as I order. Won't be going back.

Alexandria K.

Yelp
there Cajan fries were so undercook i found hair in all of my food with a part of a fingernail or at-least i think it was a fingernail in one of the fries.

Yelp
A hidden gem within the Kerrytown Market. I am a big fan of their Entrèes en Papillote, which often make for a great meal. On Sundays, they also offer a Lox & Bagel that has become a part of my weekly routine. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive to needs (re: cleaning eating spaces reserved for dining in).
google avatar

Yelp
The seafood here is the most fresh and amazing thing I've ever had. The ambience is fantastic in the staff are always very friendly great service!

Yelp
I stopped in late on Friday (1:45 pm) after getting off the train. Hungry, I stopped by the area knowing I could find options. Even though it's past the lunch hour rush, it's a good crowd. Unfortunately, the line was a bit disorganized and confusing. It's a jump upfront to the glass to get called on next type of situation. There is not distinction between raw seafood grocery order and dine in/takeout order. After about 10 minutes of no traction and others jumping to the front, I utilized that strategy to place my lunch order. It would be 10 minutes for my order (panko crispy fish sandwich for $10.95) I'm told. I head to the end and see four stools. I wait there and watch them prep. There is great care for the French fries and fried shrimp. When I get my sandwich the lettuce, tomato, and onion is fresh. The fish was a disappointment. Battered, it was still dripping of oil. I held it up the entire time so that excess oil would come off. The fish was bland, no salt, no taste of fish. Maybe I ordered the wrong item. I might give them another shot, but wouldn't go out of my way.

Yelp
Are you a seafood fanatic? Then get yourself to Monahan's. Are you a HARDCORE seafood fanatic? Then head to their website and sign up for the "Friday Fish Report" email which has up to the minute updates to let you know what specials they have that week so you can get the freshest, most delicious fish they have available. Their website is also a fount of knowledge. Just this week I learned that one of the most hideous fish I've ever seen, the monkfish, is apparently delicious in soups, bouillabaisse, gumbos and stews. And they also have recipes to test it out! Not into cooking for yourself? Lunch hours are from 11am-3pm on M-Saturdays (Sundays are for bagels and lox during the same hours) and feature everything from a chowder of the day to shrimp gazpacho in the summertime, to salmon burgers and the most delicious fish and chips. Fresh oysters, too! You can even pick a fish from the case and they'll prepare it for you. Every fish I've ever purchased, as well as shrimp and calamari, has been delicious and unbelievably fresh. I'm not sure I'm ready for the monkfish but I'm glad they're educating people on other kinds of sustainable seafood. We're lucky to have them here in Ann Arbor!

Yelp
I've only ever had lunch here, but every meal has been great! The staff are extremely friendly and this place always crosses my mind whenever I'm craving seafood for lunch. While I have yet to buy ingredients from here, the presentation of their iced seafood is impressive.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of trying Monahan's Seafood Market a few times when my boss has treated our office to lunch! One word to sum it up... wow! We recently had the thai shrimp special and it was fantastic. The shrimp was super flavorful, but I loved the umami bomb that was the slaw on the side. We've also had the fried fish tacos on Tuesday's... delightful! The portions are plentiful and I can't wait to go in person to check out their over-the-counter and other takeout options.

Yelp
I have been a Monahan's a handful of times to buy smoked salmon, fresh fish, shrimp, etc but this review is for their cooked foods! Monahan posts their lunch specials every day on their social media. One fateful Wednesday, I was browsing near lunch time and their baja fish tacos caught my eye. I was born and raised in SoCal and I love me some baja fish tacos. It was super easy to call and place a pick up order. I was really impressed by the value -- for ~$10, it was big pieces of fried fish! As you can see in the photo, it's on a decent sized flour tortilla. It's not a full 12" tortilla BUT the fact that the fish filled that up speaks to the size. The fish was PERFECTLY fried. Not a soggy bit in sight. It was served with a cabbage slaw with some light mayo. Appreciated the little container of tapatio as well. I felt like I was transported back to the sunny shores of San Diego, CA! All of Monahan's lunch specials look fantastic, so I'll be back for pick up!
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
I'm not a big fish eater, but I want to be. So, it was great to have very knowledgeable staff help me choose the best fish and give me some direction. It was so fresh and delicious! I'm a new regular.
google avatar

Crazy D.

Yelp
I wasn't expecting the food to be perfect. The scallops were EXACTLY how scallops are supposed to be cooked. Crispy on the edges and melting in your mouth. Buttery and delicious. Fried shrimp was delicious, as well can't wait to come back and try more food.
google avatar

Winter W.

Yelp
Tried their fried pollock and chips. Although I prefer cod, the pollock was pretty good. I think they toss the fries in butter which made them tasty. I wanted the Thai shrimp again but it's only available on Wednesdays.
google avatar

Timothy S.

Yelp
Great place for seafood, multiple types of oysters and whole fish to choose from. Hard to find fish like skate love this place.
google avatar

Hannah F.

Yelp
Monahan's is truly a hidden gem on campus! Tucked away in nearby peaceful Kerrytown, it offers fresh, artisanal seafood at an unbeatable price. Their fish and chips are a classic and incomparably fresh at only $12, paired with a fresh and addictive tartar sauce. I had the salmon burger, which was juicy, light, and filling. The market slaw was also good, although I wish the cabbage shreds were a bit thinner. Service was friendly and fast, and there's a wonderful outdoor courtyard adjacent to the market. I will definitely be back to try some of their other menu items in the future!
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow! This market is fantastic. I've passed it a few times shopping around in kerrytown and had heard it was a great lunch spot so I decided to check it out. In addition to the wide selection of raw seafood to buy/cook at home, they also have a menu for ordering cooked meals. I tried their fish and chips and they were incredible. The fish tasted fresh and hot, right out of the fryer! Great flavor and batter. The teriyaki salmon also looked very tasty.. will be back!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Stopped in today for my first time to pick up some filets I can't find elsewhere and was pleasantly surprised with the selection. We wanted to get some prepared food to try, but we had our pup and it made it a tad challenging. Reminded me of seafood markets I visited growing up and living in California for 46 years. Very personable and knowledgeable employees as well. Can't wait to get back on date day without the pup and try some of their offerings!!
google avatar

Jazzi K.

Yelp
Their fish and chips is incredible. The fish is mild and moist, and the breading stays crisp even through the fifteen minute drive home. The tartar sauce is also good - I think they add dill and possibly some lemon or hot sauce in addition to the traditional mayo and relish. When you open the box, it looks like the ratio of fish to fries may be off, but it always fills me up and then some. The fried shrimp is not a good a deal, since it doesn't come with fries, and in my opinion, there ratio of batter to (huge!!!) shrimp is too high. I still order it when I want something different.
google avatar

Rose S.

Yelp
If you're in Ann Arbor for the farmer's market, stop by Monahan's Seafood Market. I happened to stumble upon this gem when I was scrolling through the shops after visiting the Wednesday farmer's market. I have gone pescatarian for health reasons so sometimes finding something to eat is a little hard. I was SO excited to find this place and the selection is great. I tried the teriyaki salmon with rice. I want to go back and try the shrimp next time. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the teriyaki sauce was perfect. For the price and portion it was perfect. Definitely a great place to eat!
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Spectacular fish to cook at home, plus short-order lunches, chowder, and oysters for eating in Kerrytown. Most of the time I stop by, it's for a fish-dish-of-the day and a few oysters. Their po'boy sandwiches are excellent, and I dig their fish and chips (but usually split that one). We've also gotten some great salmon and shellfish to cook at home, and some fun boquerones (Spanish vinegared anchovies). They also do ready-to-cook dishes like fish in parchment paper; haven't tried those yet. Easily my favorite lunch stop in Kerrytown.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp after getting sick of going to the same few restaurants in Ann Arbor over and over (sorry, Frita Batidos...I still love you). I had a hard time deciding what to order because everything looked so good. I decided on the Fish & Chips while my dad ordered the Salmon Burger. It took a little less than 15 minutes for our order to be prepared at 1:30pm on a Monday, which gave us enough time to grab a loaf of bread at the shop next door and look around. The fish & chips were great. It came with two smaller pieces and one larger piece as well as plenty of chips. My dad enjoyed his salmon burger. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu!
google avatar

Shinya K.

Yelp
Tried fish and chip which was awesome last time so I am back here. This time I tried fried calamari. Great again. Server is very kind. Noimally packed inside of the building so enjoy outside is also a good idea. P.S. I checked the recipt, he didn't take tip. So I gave him tip by cash which he definitely deservs. Very troustable server.

Yelp
Customer service-wise, it was excellent. I wanted a sea bass, but they didn't have any. It was Sunday and the fresh would be delivered on Monday. After describing what I liked, it was decided I would be trying something TOTALLY DIFFERENT. A Skate fillet. I was given suggestions on how to prepare it and told that it was a mild tasting fish that would better be served sauteed in olive oil and topped with a caper butter sauce (I got that from there as well). I'm preparing it tonight with brown rice and sauteed vegetables. I will post the outcome later. Later has come and gone. The fish was delicious! My dinner was delicious! I prepared the fish in grapeseed oil and seasoned it with salt and pepper. Topped it with the buttered capers and dined like I knew what I was doing lol! Great choice!
google avatar

Conner B.

Yelp
The best oysters in Ann Arbor. We had three different styles, and my favorite was served with a spicy salsa of sorts. I could have had a dozen for myself! We each got a different seafood dinner and passed them around the table. Delicious! It was a treat to have seafood in Ann Arbor - we definitely will be back. The cocktails were nice - the special was a honey-sweetened old fashioned. 5/5.

Yelp
I can assure you that Monahan's is the only store in town that I trust on a daily basis for the freshest product available. Sincerely, The Mustang Chef

Yelp
Surprisingly enough, this fish market located in the Kerrytown market is my #1 go to for lunch in downtown Ann Arbor. In addition to selling fresh fish and oysters, they run a lunch special every day. They will have a entree and a soup option. My favorite choice is their crispy fish sandwich. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I went to Monahan's on the weekend while I was in town, which is located in Kerrytown. It's a bit hidden. You need to walk through a market on the bottom floor and then you'll see it. I ordered their oyster po'boy and waited about 50 minutes for my order even though I was told it would only be a 15-20 minute wait. Five people who ordered the exact same thing after me received their orders before I did. I inquired with the employee that took my order about the status of my meal when I saw people who were behind me in line eating their food and even leaving. He apologized and said the cook must have misplaced my order or something. Luckily I got a refund for the po'boy, but in al honesty, it was not worth the wait. Food (3 out of five stars): I ordered the oyster po'boy. The oysters were perfectly fried but the rest of the sandwich was mediocre. The bread was dry, the spread was just okay, and the lettuce was a bit wilted. If you need a po'boy fix, this would do, but it's not something that I would order again. Service (1 out of five stars): This place needs to find a better organization system. When it gets busy, no one knows who's in line, where the line starts, etc. When I was there, there were maybe two or three random lines and customers had no clue who was in line or not. Have people take a number or something to make this an equitable process instead of a chaotic one. Also, make sure that you don't loose someone's order. The people that work here seem friendly, but the system seems flawed. Pros: -They make tasty fried oysters -Friendly servers---they check to see if you've been helped Cons: -Unorganized ordering system -Limited seating options -They lost my order and had me wait half an hour longer than what they told me

Yelp
This place was so packed and we could tell why. The food was so fresh and tasty! Everything was very flavorful. You can also order fresh, uncooked seafood to cook yourself at home. The staff was very polite and helpful. We will definitely be back to try more items. This is a must try place!

Yelp
Came in for before my daughter's freshman college move in, great seafood lunch, had fresh and tasty world class scallops and lobster bisque soup of the day, service was super as well. Will be coming back for sure again and again
google avatar

Wilson C.

Yelp
I came to this restaurant after checking out the farmers market. I had heard from friends that this place had really good seafood so I wanted to check it out. I got calamari, raw oysters, and mussels and various fish. This place is pretty good but it's also fairly pricey and at the time that I came, this place is packed. The oysters were really good and I recommend trying their muscles since they use this wine sauce that is really good. I highly recommend to try this place but make sure to come early because this place does get really packed.

Yelp
I was recently visiting Ann Arbor for Thanksgiving week and I happened upon this establishment while visiting the Kerrytown market. The service was fast and friendly (from two Monahan's employees). The food...was just ok. I ordered and tried the Fish and Chips, the Cajun Shrimp sandwich, and a side of cole slaw. The fish and chips were fried nicely but was a bit bland. The cole slaw was fine. But I was actually a bit disappointed with the Cajun Shrimp sandwich. I hate when people say things like I'm about to say, but...I used to live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, so I know what cajun foods should be...and this was NOT cajun anything. It too, was bland. It tasted like the Costco shrimp salad on a bun... Nothing spectacular about the food, but the service saved this place.
