Yelp
I wish I checked out Monahan's during the six years I lived in Ann Arbor. They sell fresh seafood here, which I knew about, but I didn't know they also had cooked foods available to purchase. After hearing about the delicious soups here from a couple friends, I grabbed lunch with a friend here yesterday late morning.
BERNIE'S FABULOUS CHOWDER OF THE DAY (PINT)
Today, the chowder of the day was the classic New England Clam Chowder, one of my favorites. It was creamy without being overly fatty. It was rich and hearty, with a good amount of clam and potatoes. Overall, it was one of the better New England Clam Chowders I've had, and I can understand the hype. Each order comes with two small slices of baguette, lightly spread with butter, perfect for enjoying with the soup.
FRIED CALAMARI
The order comes with a generous portion of fried calamari, mostly "tube" shaped, with a few tentacles mixed in. We enjoyed the tentacles more because they were crispier and packed with more seasoning and flavor. Some of the tube-shaped calamari, however, was on the soggier side and a bit bland. Overall, it's a good dish for sharing.
SALMON TERIYAKI
Each order comes with a big piece of salmon marinated in teriyaki sauce, swerved with a side of rice topped with black sesame seeds. The salmon was grilled well, but the teriyaki sauce didn't contribute much flavor. Overall, the dish was quite bland, and I wouldn't order this again.
I definitely recommend giving the soups a try at Monahan's. There are some tables to enjoy the food indoors.
