The Best Restaurants and Bars in The Woodlands

"With a sleek, clubby vibe, this Monterey-style restaurant offers an upscale menu that showcases dishes prepared on a Josper grill imported from Barcelona. Standouts include shrimp and snapper ceviche dripping in ghost pepper citrus broth, chicken enchiladas, grilled rib-eye served with charred shishito peppers, and esquites — Monarca’s Mexican-style street corn salad that’s crowned with crispy leeks and queso fresco. Tequila here is a given. Choose from a long list to concoct the perfect margarita. Then, continue the fun after dinner by slipping into the restaurant’s speakeasy, Gus, which is tucked behind a nondescript door at the back of the restaurant." - Laura L. 19 Excellent Places to Eat and Drink in the Woodlands

"Chef Sebastian Royo brings the bright, bold flavors from his days living in Monterrey to this new modern Mexican cocina. The menu is set up for family-style sharing, and many of the meats are charcoal grilled on a rare imported Josper grill — one of the very few in the States. An elegant, baja-style red snapper served with chamoy sauce, pickled veggies with chapulin aioli and a slow-cooked pork shank are amongst some of the highlights on the menu. The Josper-grilled meats are also noteworthy, and the drink menu features an extensive mezcal and tequila selection. While you may think of the traditional shrimp cocktail when seeing campechana on the menu, get ready for the restaurant’s sweeter interpretation of the Mexican dish, which includes ice cream, dulce de leche, pistachio, and a stunning pastry flake." - Megha McSwain, Sean Hekmat

15 Houston Speakeasies to Spice Up Your Night

"Monarca made its mark on Houston’s robust Mexican restaurant scene by elevating a key character: Monterrey. The Mexican hometown of three of the restaurant’s four owners is central to Monaraca’s framework and its interpretation of liquid revelry. A door next to the restaurant’s bar emblazoned with an illustrated eye leads guests to Gus, a posh speakeasy bar adorned in academia style. Indulge in tequila-laced creations on its spacious leather couch, or one of its many deep green chairs." - Brittany Britto Garley, Kayla Stewart

We spent Mother’s Day brunch at Monarca. We made the decision based on location and availability. We’re happy we did. We had a lovely time while enjoying delicious dishes. Everything was excellent and the dessert was to die for. We will definitely come back again.

We recently had a business dinner party of four at Monarca Modern Mexican Cocina and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. We started with the Ceviche Blanco and Aguachile Ribeye as appetizers both were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. All of our margaritas were perfectly made and balanced. For the main course, we tried the Arrachera, which was cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. The service was outstanding our waiter was very attentive and made great recommendations since it was our first visit. Even the small details stood out, like the restrooms being spotless clean. Overall, Monarca delivered on food, drinks, and service. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an elevated Mexican dining experience in The Woodlands.

Excellent! I ordered TACOS GOBERNADOR and they were absolutely DELICIOUS! I highly recommend. It comes with 3 but I’d already enjoyed one before I decided to photograph! I will definitely be back. I look forward to ordering them again soon!

The cocktails…. Some of the best margaritas I’ve ever had. HIGHLY recommend the steak tacos 🤤. The food was great wish the churros weren’t as doughy but the flavor was good. The speakeasy was a too loud for us. Maybe I’m just getting old but I want to be able to hear what my friends are saying right next to me. Music too loud but the decor was spot on. Fun night out all in all and very affordable

Monarch Modern Mexican Cocina – Stunning Atmosphere, Great Staff, but Underwhelming Food Monarch is an absolutely beautiful spot with a fantastic ambiance and incredibly kind staff. The restaurant has a gorgeous, modern aesthetic that makes it a great place to relax and enjoy a night out. That said, the food was disappointing. The only dishes I truly enjoyed were the Brussels sprouts and the salad—everything else just didn’t deliver. If you’re looking for a place with incredible Mexican flavors, this might not be it. However, if you’re in the mood for great cocktails (or mocktails), a stunning setting, and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s definitely worth a visit. I’d come back for the drinks and the vibe alone!

Great spot we found in spring area. Food was great we were seated right away, place is well kept & clean. Food was very good we got the Enchiladas, Steak Tacos, & The torta along with some good treats. However, couple of things: Firstly they didnt have a couple of things i requested on the menu, Examples: No Cappucinos, No churro deserts. Also their chips come in a veryy small bowl, had to ask for extras. Secondly although the place itself was clean i found little particles in my water glass so i didnt bother drinking. Also, the restrooms dont have a lock so be aware. Other than that everything else was good. It would be nice to have had everything they promote on the menu. 8/10.

I had a private party for 35 people at the speakeasy and it was outstanding. We had live music, a dedicated server and a bartender. Everyone had a great time and was quite impressed with the place. I am still getting raving reviews about the food. Overall we had a great time. Sebastian, the manager, was great to work with and was always on top of every single detail. I would definitely recommend this place for a special celebration.

I have hosted multiple private events in Gus’s Speakeasy attached to Monarca, and they have all been huge hits! The food and service has been top notch and Marcelo & Sabastian are so easy and accommodating to work with. I looked forward to many more events to come!
