I stayed at the Mondrian for 1 week (10/21-28/2023) and thought it was okay. I booked through Booking.com back in June and paid ~$2k for a room with a balcony.
About a month ahead of my stay, I emailed requesting the highest possible type of room and was told they would make a note. Upon check in, I was given room 1604, with the 16th floor being the lowest floor with balcony rooms. Of course anything higher was already booked, hmm.
The biggest pro of this hotel is the location. It feels really safe, honestly, and I say that as a single female traveler.
The segment of Park Avenue South the hotel is located on is moderately trafficked during the day and until about 11 PM on any given night, but the crowd moves with purpose, not a lot of loitering. I felt comfortable going a block over at night to Walgreens and even grabbing pizza around 1 AM.
Aside from safety of location, there is proximity. You are 7 minutes walking from the Empire State Building as well as about 10 minutes from the Flat Iron Building. There's also lots of eateries, grocery stores, and lots of other conveniences.
The room itself was fine. The decor was okay but could use a refresh--the white heavy curtains and sheers were both stained on the bottom as if an animal had peed on them. The carpeting will turn your soles black if you spend too much time on it, too. But I thought the king bed and pillows were comfortable.
I was impressed with the size of the bathroom! You don't usually get such a large bathroom in any major city--modern double sinks with a surface for all your makeup and hot tools. I really appreciated that. My shower was missing the shampoo/conditioner/body wash for 3 days before suddenly it appeared installed--I went to go buy all of this in the meantime, which was annoying. The shower door didn't have a seal and the hotel's way of compensating for this was to place a rolled towel to insinuate you use it as a stopper? It just resulted in a soppy towel. Speaking of doors, the bathroom door is a slider without a lock and with a gap, so either travel solo or be in that relationship stage where you are comfortable hearing everything LOL
The balcony view was of the neighboring buildings, but you do see sky. On the 16th floor, you're immediately above the terrace, so you don't get a sense that you're high up and it's also distracting and not very private if you want to sit out.
I found the front desk pretty helpful. Anytime I needed more towels or water, they were pleasant and responsive.
Continental breakfast is offered daily--pastries, toast, fruit, yogurt. The end time is 10 AM but they were pretty forgiving and really generous if you came a bit after that.
Heads up, if you want late checkout, you need to ask the day of AND pay $50 an hour!
Overall, it was an okay stay, but I think I would stay elsewhere in the future.
