Best Holiday Christmas Bars and Pop-Ups in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"For those who feel like spooky season doesn’t last nearly long enough, this holiday mashup is better than a Monster Mash. The meadery hosts a Dark Yule event, Corsets and Caviar party, Wicked Holiday artist market, and more embrace the darker elements of winter. Expect to find drinks like the Ghosted Scrooge and herb-infused cocktails like the Plague Doctor." - Su-Jit Lin

We’d never tried mead before, and this was the perfect spot to try it! We tried all 12 by getting two taster flights. Some gems in there, with some very creative flavors. The service & atmosphere was welcoming and friendly , made it enjoy to enjoy a few drinks there. We also tried the pickles and charcuterie board, both were good. It’s definitely a place you need to experience. I would recommend it to visit at least once for everyone.

Recommended by Ben from Project Lean Nation as he mentioned he knew the owner back when he was selling Mead from his car! As someone who’s worked with and sold craft beer for years in northwest Florida, mead seems to be elusive and a rare sight at any craft beer spot so I was ecstatic to visit my first Meadery. Quaint, tucked away and with a unique vibe, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here from the overall aesthetic to the plentiful options to choose from to drink and to buy as souvenirs! We got some snacks; the Frankfurt, pretzel and got a flight of 6 different flavored meads with an additional two “shots” of mead aged in whiskey & tequila barrels respectively. Overall, enjoyed my time here and highly recommend if you are a lover of mead and for those that never had it.

Nice little place! Wanted to go crazy and try all of their mead! My favorite ones might be the Savannah heat and the plague doctor. But each one is great in their own way!

Awesome atmosphere, super friendly staff, plenty of tables and games on hand, great spot to spend a few hours. Highly recommend getting a flight to try as many meads as possible, a steal for $15. Plague Doctor and Red Wedding were our favorites.

We loved this little place! We came here for our first time to check it out! The flight of mead was an excellent starter! The atmosphere was warm and fun! We can’t wait to come back for some of their events! Highly recommend checking out!

Wow! What a hidden gem in Atlanta! Love Oliver the super chill tortie kittie, the incredibly gracious and sweet people who helped us with our selections, the vibe, the amazing mead, the curated snacks, and the board games ! (They have Settlers- so lovely). We had a short amount of time to be there before catching a show, but would have stayed for hours if we could have!

What an incredible time! The mead, the food, the staff…and I happened to visit in December when it was decorated like an elf on acid got ahold of the holiday decorations so it couldn’t have looked any more charming!! The mead here is awesome! If you love mead you will not be disappointed and if you haven’t had mead before, don’t be scared. There are many different flavors - some are sweeter like a hard cider, some dryer. I think you’ll find something here that suits you no matter what your taste. You can get a flight of six small glasses and sample a bunch of things. The meadtenders are so sweet, they will help you find something you’ll love. I’ve tried Monk’s Mead in a can at the Renaissance Festival but it was wonderful to get it freshly poured here. There are special flavors you can only get here at the meadery that aren’t sold anywhere else - small batch treats and seasonal flavors. There was even a nonalcoholic mead that tasted like tropical punch that was delicious!! Broadway took great care of me. I stopped in alone because I had a few hours to kill while my kids were seeing a concert downtown. She recommended meads to me, sold me on the delicious pretzel and hand pies (the meat pie was so great with a buttery crust and deliciously seasoned beef, but the mushroom was even better and I’m completely a carnivore!) We talked music, movies and gastronomy - like how their olives appetizer really brings out the sweetness of the honey in the mead (it really does!) - and I felt like this was a place I’d been hanging out nightly, instead of just walking in as a stranger. I had the best, most unexpected evening hanging out at Monk’s Mead. It stinks that I live so far away - they host so many fun events, I wish I could go back weekly! See y’all soon!

Google
Great place overall----the ambiance, the atmosphere, the service, the MEAD itself...wonderful! I loved their decorations on the walls describing the history of Mead and its place in our culture (did you know, for example, that the word "honeymoon" comes from gifts of mead given during a wedding?). They have such variety of Mead; I tried a "flight" of six selections and liked them all. There was even a group in one corner playing Dungeons & Dragons (I hadn't played in years, and it was good to talk with fellow gamers for a few minutes). It was a long drive for me (well over an hour from Cartersville to the Atlanta spot where it was located), but well-worth the drive, I assure you! The only downside to this place is twofold----first of all, parking is cramped; better get there early. Also at every major intersection on the way there once I'd gotten inside Atlanta, there were *beggars* assertively/aggressively pestering motorists for handouts; really aggravating. But these two blemishes only took one star away from this Review, and overall it's a GREAT place to visit...highly recommend!!

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday afternoon right after they opened. The waiter was great and super helpful in explaining the menu and taking orders. Halloween decorations were all throughout and pretty fun. My partner and I got two flights and tried all the meads on the menu. My favorites were dragon's nectar, red wedding, and pink (bacchus blushed). I will definitely be back! The only thing I didn't like about this place was the drive down into the parking lot because it's at the bottom of a very steep hill so be careful driving in.

Yelp
Has decent parking adjacent to the building. Food/Drink: Absolutely fantastic mead with a wide selection. Can get a sample of meads for $30. Bartender was warm and talkative. Gave us good recommendations based on our preferences.

Yelp
Good vibes, excellent mead, great place to come for a drink and a game with friends! (My personal suggestion is the Savannah heat, fruity with a kick of heat)

Yelp
Don't let Monk's eccentric menu and out -of-the-way location fool you- this spot has some of the most interesting and tasty brews near Poncey Highland. We stopped in for a quick drink on a Saturday night and ended up sampling their full menu in the form a mead flight, which came in a dazzling array of colors and made for a perfect taste-and-study kind of night. The mead, which is less like beer and more like a sweet fizzy wine or kombucha, was a delicious surprise, with the spicy Savannah Heat and the tropical Sriki Tiki being the standouts. The atmosphere- relaxed and quiet with obvious medieval touches- complimented the experience. Overall, Monk's is a perfect alternative to a couple beers and a new favorite in the neighborhood.

Yelp
What an amazing find and addition to the Atlanta scene! Monk's Meadery is Georgia's very first Meadery and is an all around amazing place to sip, sample and learn all about why Meade is the next best thing in the world of specialty booze! Monk's sits directly on N Highland Avenue diagonally across from Manuel's Tavern and sits on the downstairs backside of Java Vino. There is not much signage outside of a small building sign, but if you see Java Vino, then know you are mere feet from an amazing honey based beverage! The layout of Monk's is small with a three seat bar and about six high tops inside, but they also have a great tented outdoor space that easily holds 30+ folks comfortably. The night we visited was a little chilly, but it appears that they have a garage door that they open on good weather days to connect the inside and outside. Service was PHENOMENAL! Rae and Kat were the most pleasant, friendly, knowledgeable and all around amazing folks! They answered all questions we had, which were a lot as we knew nothing of Meade, gave us recommendations and legit even got to know us as patrons. It was an absolutely delightful time chatting with both of them! Now down to the Meade! They have a rolling menu of 12 house-made Meade's. You can get all of them in 3 or 10 ounce pours, or you can select 6 that you want in a flight! You can also get some as 4 packs of bottles if you wanted to take some home to enjoy! Given that we were novices, we opted for the flights. The flights are a great deal, as you get (6) three ounce pours for only $15! Another cool thing is the way they service it up, they allow you to number your choices on the menu from 1 - 6 and then they bring your flight back with your menu so you can follow along and know which exact one you are trying without getting lost amongst your Meade and the menu! My six tasty glasses of Meade-y goodness were... - Monks Meade - Peachin to the Choir - Dragon's Nectar - Belgian Brut - Orange Claudeous - Hazy Monk Hands down Dragon's Nectar was the winner of the night for me! It is a passion fruit, hibiscus and dragon fruit infused Meade and it was absolutely delish! The Peachin to the Choir and Hazy Monk were close runner ups! I will say the Hazy Monk was the most surprising of the night. The espresso flavor was so pronounced and perfectly balanced that I was equally shocked and impressed that they got so much robust flavor in such a smooth honey based drink! Overall, Monk's Meadery is a top spot for me and one that I will certainly visit again and that will definitely be on my recommendation list for all folks visiting Atlanta!

Yelp
Stopped in here with a friend for a couple tasters of their mead. Wow. They have so many different things to try. The interior space is small-ish and cozy. The staff is super chill and was totally willing to help walk through the different flavors. There is cool art on the walls that is super unique, along with little "FYIs" about mead. Even the owner was walking around the tasting room and was totally available to chat. He clearly had a passion for his craft and a deep knowledge of the process and ingredients. You dont need to come here to get this good stuff either, "the official mead of DragonCon" can be found in most local stores and they also ship to 48 states. Go get some!

Yelp
A nice hidden spot for a casual beer alternative in the city. I wasb't particularly fond of the mead I tried, or my partner's, hence the 3 star review. I typically like mead but given that we showed up within an hour or so of them closing for the day, I didn't want to bother the bartenders with trying too many flavors when what I ordered was ok. I'll have to give this place another fair shot to judge their drinks next time.

Yelp
We stumbled across this place while walking around exploring Atlanta. The mead was delicious and the customer service was great! Most meads I've had have been pretty strong and mainly for sipping. They had a nice variety of lighter mead to more stronger mead. I loved the flavor variety! I would definitely return on a future visit!

Yelp
I visited this place solo and must say the staff made me feel very welcomed! The owner and staff offered great explanations on the products as well as the history of how they came about. I did purchase a Groupon and was their first Groupon customer. This was a good way to sample everything. I left with a 4 pack and have been saving my last can until I can stop by again!

Yelp
Absolutely awesome place to try several different types of mead. Highly recommend stopping in and getting a flight. The staff is super friendly and outgoing. They seemed to love pouring our mead as much as we enjoyed drinking it. Definitely grab a flight!

Yelp
Monks Meadery is the place to be!! Such an incredible atmosphere, the product rocks and the staff is so knowledgeable! They also have a Sangria on tap right now that's delicious Tucked behind Java Vino and they have outdoor seating!

Yelp
Monks Meadery is not only a great place to hang out, but also the best mead I have ever tasted! Highly suggest coming here for a drink, a hang, and great company. Get the flight and try a little of everything. Then try the Dragon's Nectar it is amazing!

Yelp
Great variety of mead. Every one I tasted had a great and unique flavor. Staff was awesome, friendly and attentive. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Had a great time at Monks. The service was fast & friendly but not overbearing. Prices were reasonable and the flights were fun & interesting to taste. They don't serve food, but they support you ordering from other local places and bringing food in which I thought was both smart and practical. I just wish they were open more days!

Yelp
awesome people. Awesome mead. Great experience! The people working were super knowledgeable and friendly. Great experience while on vacation! Will definitely go back next time we are in the area.

Yelp
Monks Meadery is the best. I have been 5 or 6 times. It's a small shop below/behind Java Vino across from Manuel's Tavern. It's so good. Mead is phenomenal and the variety of choices Monks has is great. There is something for everyone. I've come with multiple groups of friends and each of us has a different favorite. Mine is the Butter Buzz. It tastes like Butter Beer should taste like! Justin the owner is so friendly and nice. He loves talking with groups and explaining everything about mead. The wait staff is so attentive and fast too. It's definitely a fun little date spot. Can't wait to see what they have up their sleeve next at Monk's Meadery.

Yelp
Stopped in today to pick up my Dragon's Nectar cans for DragonCon and stayed for what was on tap. The tiki themed mead is a perfect summertime drinker... very balanced and not heavy at all. The staff is super friendly and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I'm sad I don't live in the area. This would be my neighborhood spot if I did!

Ryan S.

Yelp
Incredible. Staff are awesome, mead is good and the atmosphere is awesome! They even have board games. The regulars are great, the owner is kind. Can't sing the praises high enough.
