I'm not sure how a person lives in Schnitzelburg for half a decade and doesn't patronize Monnik Beer Company....but that's me. That's my family. The Germantown Schnitzelburg Blues Festival was going on tonight. We parked and were walking by when we decided to pop in on the fly. We weren't starving. We'd had a significant meal already today, but it was hot enough to be able to appreciate a crisp beer, if nothing else.
I ordered an Italian Disco (and then another) and Kyle ordered a Hauck's American Pilsner (and then another). We got pretty comfortable and ordered a house-made pretzel with beer cheese and Gouda fondue. Now, I haven't been to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, but it was the best I ever had. The Gouda was phenomenal. My two-year-old asked if it was okay to dip her fingers in it once the pretzel was gone. I didn't blame her. I let her. I was jealous.
The beer cheese had a kick and the perfect texture. I can't recall having better. It was intriguing. It led us to consider having another "snack." And so came the BBQ beef fries, smothered in smoked jalapeño jam, Gouda fondue, Eagle Skull onion straws, and house BBQ spice. The consistency, distribution of toppings, the crispiness of the fries, it was delicious. We were so impressed, it left us jonesing for more.
Needless to say, we'll be back. Not only did the food leave us satisfied, the service was exceptional. Our server, LJ, explained the rotating menus and use of locally sourced food. She gave us the space and time we needed while we debated if we needed food and/or more drinks on what is probably one of their busiest nights. She was charismatic, kind, and accommodating to our children.
If I'm completely honest, there's some local spots that, in my experience, haven't measured up to the hype. This doesn't seem to be the case with Monnik. I'll be heading back in the near future. The local burger is next on my list. And I'll be crossing my fingers that there's room for a party of four in LJ's section.
