Monsignor Murphy's

One of the most underrated neighborhood bars in the area! The bartender's are so friendly, free popcorn, two darts boards, a few TVs and a beer garden out back. Perfect place to come play some darts or come to watch a game on TV, the bar has lots of regulars which makes it a cool atmosphere.

The bouncer at Monsignor Murphy was dripping with malice. I went in Jan 2023 for the NFL playoffs but forgot about it until now. The new round reminded me and I felt this review was important. There were some world class personnel, such as the bartender Zeke (A+), but the hatred and maniacal behavior of the bouncer deserves a red flag. He ran me down in the streets because I didn’t finish my drink. It was deranged conduct and stayed with my through this time. I recommend going elsewhere!

10/10/2025 My sister, who’s 29 years old, went to this bar, which is a place she’s been to several times before — and was treated with unbelievable disrespect. The bartender (greasy, unkempt DRUNK male, about 50) accused her of being underage, swore at her, refused to give her ID back, and then handed it to some random man she barely knew instead. When I showed up to support her and calmly asked for the manager, he immediately started swearing at me too, saying he “wasn’t serving me shit,” even though I hadn’t said a single word to him before that. For context, my sister and I were the only Black people in that bar. Everyone else was white. So not only was this interaction completely unprofessional — it also felt racially charged. The bartender’s aggression and attitude were totally unprovoked, and the fact that he wouldn’t even return her ID directly to her was unacceptable and unsafe. We asked for a manager, and were told, “We’re all the manager.” That kind of response says a lot about the lack of accountability here. No one should be spoken to like that, especially in a place that’s supposed to be welcoming to the public. I hope ownership takes this seriously, because this experience was humiliating, hostile, and completely unnecessary. People deserve to feel safe and respected when they walk into an establishment — not profiled, cursed at, or dismissed.

Great staff, free food on game days and Flub a dubs can be ordered and brought right to you. They look out for each other here, too. I love this place - legit. Thanks guys 🌻

This place is great! Come on a Wednesday when they have live music. Paul is a great owner. Amanda is a great bartender. And she can saaannnggg!

Great laid back and locally owned Irish pub. They have a great heated patio in the back you have to check out. On Saturday and Sunday there is free food to go with reasonably priced drinks served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. When we were there, their were ribs, fries, and popcorn aplenty. Bathrooms were clean and patrons local and loyal. Check out their live music schedule for top notch entertainment.

I commented on a post about this bar as an unrelated spectator and someone affiliated with the bar—two people actually—spammed my picture assuming I was the anonymous person that complained, bullying me. This place needs to cut ties with ugly actors, but so far is associated with bullies and stalkers. The original post is about racism, and I think the confusion came from the fact I am the same race as the person who complained. I believe the reviews accusing them of discrimination now.

Wonderful bartenders, a fun vibe, and an AWESOME front porch make Murphy's a great place for some (or too many) drinks. As fun as it is on weekends, Murphy's is the place to be on Wednesdays for Bob Solone's piano--amazing musicians and the best sense of community make Murphy's the place to be in the neighborhood!

Cute place for a chill drink with friends! It's definently the neighborhood bar feel where you walk in and everyone is super friendly! I got a local cider and it was so good! The bartenders were so nice and very attentive. Highly recommend!

I always loved going to this bar when I lived in Chicago full time and whenever I visit I make a point of stopping in. I don't know exactly how long it's been there but it's the real deal -- the kind of place they don't make anymore. I have found it to be a reliable place to hang and chill by yourself or with friends. Bartenders are all really sweet and take obvious pride in taking care of their customers and getting their orders right. The reason I'm writing this review is I was sending my buddy the link to the Google page and noticed the first review is someone I strongly disagreed with. So there you have it.

Go to this bar if you want Asher the bartender to make you feel like you took a sh*t in his cheerios for simply ordering a drink at a bar. To be specific, I ordered 1 martini because other people in the bar had martinis as well and it seemed like a good choice. Asher walked over asked me what I wanted after telling him a martini he proceeded to say "phhff no im not dealing with all of that" then walked away and deliberately talked to the customers about the baseball game without taking my drink order to really rub it in my face that not only was my drink order not important, but clearly as a human I was also not important. Asher treated me as if I was his ex girlfriend who just walked in with my new boyfriend. Not sure if he was having a bad day or whatever it was but professional tip: stay home if you are going to make customers cry for walking into a bar and ordering a drink similar to that of other customers. Thank you to Asher my social anxiety has skyrocketed this past week and I no longer feel safe enough to want to go out again because I might get a bartender who is going to decide to take his frustration out on me. Great chill staff, outdoor seating for this weekend of 06/05/21 dine out in Broadway* with live entertainment what more can you ask for? I highly recommend the pineapple cider amazing! For outdoor seating the food is from Flub a Dub,s(hotdogs,burgers,etc). The chicken wings of Buffalo and guava BBQ is excellent so is the portobello mushrooms! So what are you waiting for? Check out Murphy's!

If I could give this place negative stars I would. The bartenders were so rude despite my group buying multiple pitchers. With 30 minutes left before closing we were pressured many times to leave. I was very disappointed in the service and will never be coming back. Would never recommend anyone to come here.

Cute bar! This place is very casual and the drinks were good too! This place has plenty of space and the vibe is great. The bartender was a super friendly lady who was really funny and knows how to make people's day.

I've made this my neighborhood go-to bar! I met Annie the bartender knocking drinks out as fast as they come through. Music is always on point when she's in and all around great vibes!

Warning if you go to Monsignor Murphy's (3019 N Broadway) - the owner does not care if you get roofied My fiancé, friend and I went to Murphy's last night around 8:30pm and were having a blast. At some point in the night some guy starts hitting on my friend and she kindly lets him down and said she's not interested. Later on in the evening, he comes to "apologize for bothering us" with the owner, Paul and offers to buy us a drink. This guy (who was NOT working behind the bar the whole night) proceeds to go behind the bar as Paul is watching and gets us 2 Topochicos. My friend and I start finishing the one we already had in front of us then we get called for karaoke. We grabbed the new drinks in our hand. As we were singing, my fiancé notices that my drink seems fuller than normal, so he grabs it mid-performance and brings it to the bar. He doesn't say anything to the bartender, he just orders another one for comparison and immediately notices the difference. The bartender tries to dump the drink out and my fiancé says no because he wanted proof. He asks Paul the owner if he can look at the cameras to see who put something in our drink. Paul curses my fiancé out and threatens to get him arrested so we call the police. The police arrive, and Paul states he needs a technician to access his cameras... we know this is bullshit. As owners ourselves, we can access cameras through our phone. We KNOW he has deleted the footage but we have pictures to prove it. This is super disappointing to know that the OWNER OF A BAR refused to look out for the safety of its patrons. He wanted my fiancé arrested, for what? For calling him out because we could've been drugged? Thankfully we didn't drink the drink because we were singing.. otherwise I'm sure, we would've ended up in the hospital. Spread the word. Fuck Murphy's on Broadway.

To my surprise this bar was decent for a quick drink which I ended staying longer than expected. Glad this this local venue was friendly enough to offer me drinks and free fresh popcorn. They had a great selection of tap beers which I enjoyed, the prices was affordable for the area. The only part was the washroom was in the basement and the walk down is thin other than that I recommend a friendly bar to bring yourself or friends.

A great dive bar in Lakeview. Darts, DIY music "jukebox", great kitschy decor, plus the beloved popcorn machine!!!! They do have outdoor space in the front and in the back.

We were headed to the laugh factory for a show and had time to kill. We were looking for a bar that was not crazy packed and one that had a great homey atmosphere. We checked out a couple of places including a brewery but this place was perfect. Felt like a real neighborhood bar with darts, free popcorn and nachos. Plenty of room to hang. The servers were so nice. They were dressed in Halloween garb. Hilarious. Plenty of good choices on tap. Apparently they have music on Wednesday and Sunday nights. I wished I lived in the area so I could come back more often. Great neighborhood bar.

I can't believe I'm writing a bad review about Murphys. This was always my neighborhood bar but ever since the blondes took over it went drastically downhill. They are horrendous. They'll skip your song for no reason or just make you feel like straight up garbage. The blonde female will karaoke to Disney to make herself seem relatable but she's the devil. Same as the blonde boy who will skip anything he doesn't like. Save your time and money by going here. The bartenders are god awful. They are ruining the Murphys legacy.

This place is beyond great. The vibe of the overall bar is just so prefect. Makes you feel right at home. The bar tenders were beyond kind. Overall vibe was great for a nice fun night out. The free popcorn sold me.

Very friendly, local neighborhood pub. Tvs with different games on, always easy to get yours on. They have popcorn and sometimes cook chili -- for free! You can also bring your own food in or order from the place below the bar which has great food.

My husband accidentally left his credit card here a couple weeks ago. He realized it after a few days, called to confirm they had it and said his wife (me) would come in to pick it up. I showed up and a woman got the billfold with the receipt and card. When I went to sign/add tip, she said they cashed his bill out that night and they wouldn't be able to add a tip that I was about to write in. I apologized for the mistake on my husbands part and said I'll write a review based on the positive interaction we had just had retrieving it. It wasn't until the next day that my husband received an email from his credit card company asking why he left a 70%+ tip on his bill as Monsignor Murphys. He had purchased 2 beers totally $14 and the staff at Monsignors took it upon themselves to tip themselves $10. I'm unsure if the woman who I interacted with upon pickup knew this at the time but BEWARE, if you leave your card, their greed will outshine their honesty. They've lost our business for good!

Gotta love a bar where on a Monday night I am the only woman in the place! Monsignor Murphy's, I will have to bring my gal pals the next time I stop in. Quick and friendly service. The bartender was happy to talk with us, put on whatever game we wanted, and even got us some fresh popcorn to snack on. The funny part was that Murphy's wasn't even on our destination list for the night. We stopped in for a nightcap after a terrific dinner at Chilam Balam which is located just north of Murphy's. And get this . . . .they have my favorite- BAR DARTS! The real ones- where you actually have to keep score! Beer was cheap and icy, bartender was friendly and we won the game that was on the tube. Now what could be better than that?

This is a unique bar because of its location. It's right off of a very busy street across from a parking garage but has an excellent front patio/balcony that truly makes Murphy's a place worth going. The inside of this bar is surprisingly large as well with plenty of seating for once the lockdown is lifted. Service here has always been great and the drinks (while pricey) are made well. I saw some advertisements for a piano bar as well, so I'm hoping once things return to normal that I'll be able to check that out.

Friends and I were sent here for drinks while waiting for a table at the oh so popular Chilam Balam. The boys found immediate excitement at the sight of darts, while us ladies were a bit disappointed to see they didn't serve black cherry effen vodka. And they call themselves a Chicago bar? Raspberry stoli and tonic would have to do... Halfway thru my raspberry stoli one of the servers came by to ask if he could have my glass since they were out of glasses at the bar. Say, what? Lucky for them we were soon finished when our table was ready next door. I probably won't be back unless I find myself waiting for another delicious meal at Chilam Balam. Monsieur Murphy may have hit the jackpot with this new popular restaurant opening near them...they may need to invest in some more glasses.

I'm having the best time of my life. St Patrick's day, busy but the staff is still very attentive and personable. I will most definitely be back!! They don't personally have food but the place next door will walk it over! Amanda the bartender is an absolute gem she is the main reason I will be back

free popcorn! great place to grab a cheap beer with friends and sit on the porch. doug is a great guy and i've only heard good stories from my friends who are more regular there. i fully intend on coming back

Good times in the back patio of this place with the more friendly bartenders. There is a fun guy who often works in the back. There is sometimes free food but it is usually dry and does not look very sanitary to be honest. The older woman who works up front is not usually friendly. She seems to have an attitude and literally charged my black friend more money for the same drink as I, minutes apart (I am white). When I brought it up to someone at the bar they said "Yeah, she does that." A privilege discount may be nice (kidding) but it is 2020 and behavior like that is unacceptable.

Located in a neighborhood with a lot of bars (even the grocery store across the street has a bar area), this is probably the best of the dive bars. There are lots of little things that make this place better than it's peers in the area. It's got plenty of room, never seems too crowded at the bar when you're ready for another round. It's got more of an after-dinner for a drink or three crowd than a hard core drunk crowd. Two sets of darts are free to use and usually available. Plenty of TVs to keep an eye on the game, but it's not a sports crowd. Outdoor area has its own bar. Free popcorn- add your own seasoning. Clean bathrooms. Friendly bartenders who have been there a long time and remember you. Not 5-stars- it's still a dive bar. Popcorn covers the typical whiffs of this morning's spilled beer, but it still has a light dive bar smell. Not expensive for the area, but not a bargain either. But if you want a place to hang out with your friends after dinner with no hassle in a place with some character, this one is a good bet.

The minute I saw eyes on this place, I knew I had to go in on one hot summer day. Upon entering, the joint was hosting its regulars in the middle of the afternoon. I was fortunate enough to meet the owner, Paul, and we talked about my experiences living in Korea. I came back the following Wednesday for my birthday and particularly to sing at their weekly karaoke nights held from 11pm-2am. After singing I felt the love from everyone in the bar congratulating me. What a place!

This is a Locals joint. We wandered in on Christmas Eve afternoon for a couple of drinks and I felt like the place went dead silent the moment we walked through the door. People looked the three of us up and down and eventually went back to their drinks. We grabbed a table up front and went to the bar to order. There was one bartender slinging beers the whole time and she seemed proficient at her gig. The decor is unique and mainly locally themed. While this wasn't my sort of spot, if you want a quick beer or a shot (or both), this may be the place for you.

Another bar I have lived so close to but hadn't been to til recently. I love this location and the general feel of the bar. I walk past her all the time and during the summer, there are always people on the outside small deck. It is cozy inside, not too big, but I wouldn't consider it a dive bar. There are several age groups that tend to go here, and that is what makes it non-sketchy. Just a great neighborhood bar that is nice and chill. Good specials, and I see that they have trivia on Tuesdays. I'll have to review more, but if you're in the neighborhood, stop by for sure!

Need a book? Take it just bring it back or replace it. Yep you read that right. Monsignor Murphys has a small library of books to choose from in the back. If you want to borrow it go for it and if you want to bring something to replace that's fine to. The drinks are reasonably priced but the place is kind of small. Maybe it clears out a little when you can actually use the back patio, if that's the case then it wouldn't be half bad. My friends and I were parked right in front of the stairs that led to the bathrooms. I had visions of my drunk friend falling head first down those stairs. Which almost happened but someone caught her in time. The owner of the bar was also really nice. He put a bunch of money in the jukebox and looked at my friend and I and said that we could have the rest of the credits! Score! I'm still kind of a fan of Tuck's next door. But I may just stop by Monsignor Murphys again soon...if only to look at the books.

Everything you look for in a dive sports bar. Definitely has its regulars, it has two dart boards, some Penny slots and decent drink deals. What more could you want

Walking up the steps to get in here, I realized I was walking up to dive bar heaven! I was fortunate to come on a night with a Jazz/40's lounge bar band that was providing some classy vibes to enjoy with my miller light drafts. Standards were all there - jukebox, popcorn, darts (yes!), and tv's all around, but there was just a sort of Joie de Vivre about the atmosphere that immediately made me feel at home here. I told the friendly bartenders that, and while most bartenders I would say that to would think I was crazy - these lovely ladies bought me a shot to celebrate! When I left, the bartender gave me a hug, introduced me to the owner and asked if I was going to come back some time..... ummmm that would be a YES.

I went to Monsignor Murphys on my second night in Chicago. There were some dudes playing Dominos at the bar. I asked the bartender for a porter. He said he thought 312 was kinda like a porter. Being new to the city I had no idea what 312 was. Well... it's NOT a porter. Now that its summer, they have a little sidewalk patio. It seems like a good place to stop for your basic Bud/Miller/Coors beers. I can appreicate a cold Bud Light on a hot day, but when I want a porter, ipa, dunkel, etc I won't be coming here.

The smooth notes of a saxophone caught my ear as I walked down Broadway and despite my determination to head home, (it was, after all, midnight on a Wednesday) I was lured inside. That was six months ago and I've been itching to go back on a Wednesday ever since. Finally, I got my chance this week! Apparently Murphys hosts a Blues Jam Session every Wednesday evening starting at 9:30pm. No cover, and the musicians were all great. It totally reminded me of being in New Orleans, music-wise. It seemed there was a sign-up sheet and after the original group played, other musicians would switch in. The crowd seemed like there were a lot of regulars, as they probably come to watch the show every week or go to support friends. The place definitely filled up as the night went on and was bustling by midnight (a.k.a., my curfew). Not a huge selection of draft beer (about five) and prices were pretty standard ($3 for Miller Light, $5.50 for Stella). BOTTOM LINE: Like it, love it, want some more of it!

Honey, we're not in boystown anymore. The longer I live in Lakeview, among the trendy and expensive bars/clubs/restaurant scene, the more appreciative I am of places like Murphys. Not to say that I don't love those bars--but it's nice to be able to chill at a laid back place where you know people aren't critiquing your clothing or haircut. This bar makes you feel at home and offers an intimate space for small-table discussions. The dart area and beer garden at also big pluses. I'll be back.

I had never heard of Monsignor Murphy's until my friends brought me there this last weekend and I'm so grateful for the introduction! I'm into genuine places with reasonably priced drinks and a variety of patrons and this is what I found at MM's. Music was great, there were plenty of televisions with a variety of programs if you were interested, the bartender was fabulous (she noticed my need for a refill before even I did) and though small, there were still a good number of seating options. I've deducted a star (I wish I could just deduct a 1/2 a star) because the smell within this place the entire time that we were there, was awful. I thought it was burnt rubber, my friend thought it was Sharpie, whatever it was, it didn't make us sick but it definitely hindered a five star experience. Before I wrap up, I think Monsignor Murphy's deserves special recognition for the fact that they maintain clean and fully stocked restrooms. AND, something that didn't escape my attention was that they actually have a supply of Tampons in the ladies stalls in case of emergencies. How thoughtful is that! It's the little details as far as I'm concerned...

The bar is confused about what it wants to be. I'm not sure what they are trying to convey. They have played 9 genres of music through 6 different songs. I can't figure out the decor here, are they a sports bar, a hole in the wall, a Irish pub?? I just don't get the theme.

They are a dart bar. Is that a thing? They have free popcorn. Thanks. Beer selection is average. There were a lot of people there, so may be I am missing something. Its one of those bars that fills up the way between other bars, you know, Irish bars/pubs. Dimply lit, darts, full bar with beer, specials on things you really don't want to order. Its there.

Yay for dive bars in Lakeview! There really aren't enough of them. Cork board darts, cheap beer, and good times. Oh! And a taxidermy moose head, FTW!

Great neighborhood sports bar with a couple dart boards, a renovated beer garden, and a Live Blues Jam. Score! Pretty typical beer and spirits selection so nothing special to report there; however, the renovated beer garden is definitely worth mentioning. It is large and includes its own bar and flat screen TVs. There's heaters for the Winter so don't worry about freezing your beer belly off. This is definitely a neighborhood bar; you'll see any number of regulars there on any night. You'll probably see the same regular there on multiple nights!! The bartenders are incredibly friendly and make everyone feel at home. The owner is great and lives just upstairs so you'll see him there often. The two steel tip dart boards in the back are popular and will be in use most nights; especially league nights which are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Plenty of good darters there so bring your A game and your own set... we don't like to share our weapons!! I haven't been on the Wednesday night Blues Jam but hear it is pretty awesome. They setup in the front and move some tables back in front of the dart boards for overflow. So don't expect to do much darting on Wednesdays unless you're connected and can clear some space. Murphy's is an awesome hangout and full of colorful, local characters. A great place to unwind after work or to catch a ballgame. Don't expect to see any Yankee's game here... its a BoSox bar that also, of course, plays the Cubs. They'll have the White Sox games on too but you might have to ask. Love you Laurie and Paul!!

I'm on the fence between 3 and 4 here... I'd like to go 4, but the hair in my pint and the quickly disappearing bartender solidifies the 3. The gf and I were looking for a place to sit (outside on a lovely Saturday afternoon) and have a pint or two before we did the dinner thing. We had gone past Monsignor's a few times, and it seemed like a decent little place, and that it is. Nothing fancy, which is fine. It wasn't terribly busy inside, and there were still a couple seats out back. Unfortunately, it was surprisingly hot in the outdoor section. So we grabbed a pint inside, then made use of the couple bar stools out front on the patio. That made for some good Saturday afternoon people watching there on Broadway. Interesting mix, to be sure. At $3 for a pint of (very cold) Miller Lite, it's not the cheapest place around, but not the most expensive by a long shot. Just a good, clean little neighborhood bar. (Minus the hair atop my pint. But I'm a good beer-drinkin man of Irish descent. Didn't stop me from taking it out and drinking.) If I was in the neighborhood, I'd likely go back, although if I wasn't, I don't know if it would be a plan-my-night-around-it place... One last note: they take credit cards, and didn't have a minimum purchase.

Great backyard patio. Free popcorn. Bud pints are $2. I think they also serve jello shots. Bartenders are super friendly. Ladies room, totally clean. If you are looking to have a few pops in the afternoon, and not be hassled by the usual Wrigleyville jackasses or people from the suburbs, Murphy's is a great option. Yeah, there are a lot of "regulars" and "solos" hanging onto the bar (some literally), but I wouldn't let that stop anyone from checking this place out.

This place is unbelievable. Best bartenders. Awesome jukebox. Popcorn (with a white cheddar topping!). I may be a little biased as I am a regular.... but i'm a regular because of how they treated me in the beginning. pop in early evening any day of the week. the crowd is great and friendly, the bar tenders are funny and talkative and the beer garden is never crowded.

Decent dive bar on a Tuesday night. -$2.50 PBR -Free popcorn -No food but the hot dog joint underneath delivers. -Trivia starts at 7:30pm. Host is great, good mix of questions, and fun crowd participating.

Was here on a Tuesday- trivia night; Dale does a good job. What can I say? Very average bar with less than average beer offerings. Had a 'townie' feel so if you like that sort of vibe, this is the place for you. I won't be going back.

I liked the small town feeling of this place. It was clean, well kept, and the bathrooms were adorable. I liked their double specials; one beer and one drink. The truly best thing about this bar was the music. NICE NICE NICE. Classic, sing-a-long music that made me want to dance! Thanks!

I stopped in here one night when I was waiting for the boy to get home. I was hoping he'd join me there and we'd have a few drinks. Nope! As soon as he showed up, we left. I didn't want to spend one more cent there. I had a beer, and I was pretty hungry so I thought cheese sticks would be good. So overpriced! And awful cheese sticks. BLECH!

My friends and I come here on occasion for Trivia on Tuesdays. This is definitely the definition of dive bar - but I think that's why I like it. Murphy's isn't trying to be anything more than what it is, and I can appreciate that. The Good: -Tuesday Trivia was just the right amount of difficult, but not so soul crushing that we all didn't have a good time. Solid prizes - gift certificates toward your tab, and sometimes a free round of drinks depending on the trivia round. -Decent drink specials. $2.50 PBR, which isn't my choice of brew, but it's cheap. $5 drafts otherwise. The Meh: -Not a huge selection of beer on tap. Some quality choices like Bell's and Stella, other than that not much to speak of. The Hilarious: -When we arrived we were starving and asked for menus, to which our bartender replied they didn't have a kitchen but the hot dog/hamburger place downstairs delivers. At first I was taken aback, but after eating a delicious burger that was delivered promptly I realized this was actually pretty funny. Kinda flows with the "hole in the wall" theme that Murphy's really epitomizes.

I have been coming to this bar for years. Since I no longer live in Chicago me and friends plan a trip just to go here. We love Doug the Bartender. If you're looking for a great place to hang out with friends and throw back a few...This is the place! Drinks are reasonably priced and you just might get Doug to sing along to the jukebox. Plenty of food places nearby who deliver. (I'll be there with friends celebrating my birthday this Saturday.) All in all it's a great place to encounter!

Monsignor Murphy's is pretty fantastic. It's laid back, comfortable and a little dive-y without being dirty. The crowd is pretty chill and surprisingly open to meeting strangers, and the bartenders are really friendly. Perfect for a couple drinks on a weeknight, as there are good tunes that aren't so loud you can't talk, places to sit, and at a minimum a small crowd. Oh, and once my friend and I managed to make a boy cry here, which somehow makes it all the more stellar in my book.

I love this bar! It is divey like, which I am always a fan of. I love the staff as well, they are so fun. Brittnay was my bartender and I could talk to her for hours. She was chatty, attentive, and still was getting the job done. Definitely one of my favorite bartenders I have met in the city. They also have free popcorn available to guests with an assortment of flavors!! That is key, people. It was not too crowded but there was a live crowd. They had TVs playing sports, people playing darts, and a wide range of music. I can't wait to go back!
