Few first time dines at a restaurant have been so sure, so dead easy with no doubts after tasting the food. There's something very special going on in the kitchen here for lunch on a cold Friday lunch time when there were but a half dozen people in the house. And in Topeka of all places, not where I'd expect a meal this exceptional. Nothing against Topeka. I wouldn't expect this in Kansas City or Lawrence where I reside. I've had my share of Indian that was very good but didn't measure up to this in London and New York City. Yes, I said that.
In this little hidden away restaurant on the back side of a nondescript shopping center, magic is happening. The subtle spices, the right heat, the after taste, and the chicken and shrimp (the latter particularly difficult to cook well once they've been frozen, and this is Kansas). We had Prawn Saagwala and Butter chicken, both seasoned perfectly. Even the Peshwari Naan was a step beyond, an utterly mouth watering naan stuffed with raisins & dry fruits. Sublime.
A chai started us off. No cloying heavy cream, just the hint of ginger and spices and that had been carefully prepared.
And best of all, a couple of hours later, your body tells you there was none of the typical restaurant tricks used to make a first-rate tasting meal. No overuse of ghee, heavy cream, too much salt, sugar, etc. This was a hands down perfect meal. We have an appointment in Topeka in January and have already agreed this is a must stop on the way to that. In a town where I found few reasons to trip over from Lawrence, I make an exception to Monsoon. That good, very highly recommended.
When I saw they have 250 reviews and a 4.5 star rating I was dubious, until the first taste passed my lips. Other reviews seem to have caught on to this. What a hidden gem that for me is no longer long hidden, but in plain sight, and happily so.
