"Draped in Spanish moss across 20,000 acres in South Carolina’s Low Country, the sprawling retreat features 200 rooms and suites, nature trails, two pools, a Jack Nicklaus–designed golf course, and a children’s Paintbox program (ages five to 12) plus the Montage Merits program that rewards kids with badges for outdoor adventures, while adults can retreat to a 13,000-square-foot spa or the dimly lit speakeasy Hush and explore nearby cultural sites like Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park." - Nina Kokotas Hahn
"Nestled on the banks of the May River and surrounded by a 20,000‑acre nature preserve, this Lowcountry property encourages families to slow down with shaded live oaks, rope swings, guided nature walks, and waterway ecotours. Programs that highlight local culture and ecology let guests try shrimping in the salt marsh estuaries or visit Daufuskie Island to learn about Gullah Geechee traditions, while weekend offerings include a Kids’ Night Out with dinner and games (Paintbox kids club minimum age is 5). Common spaces and multiple room categories are ADA accessible; rates start at about $690 per night." - Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning is the special projects and surveys editor at Travel + Leisure, where she has been on staff since 2018. "A brief drive from Savannah delivered us into a 20,000-acre, Spanish-moss-draped escape where a golf cart is the main mode of transportation and we also grabbed rental bikes, much of it a protected nature conservancy with 32 miles of waterfront. Any remaining traces of the much-overrated “real world” disappeared as we settled into a sprawling three-story brick home in Wilson Village—a newish build that nods to classic Southern architecture. The vibe is laid-back (but not lazy) and superbly appointed Southern luxury, slow and low, all white picket fences, riverfront cottages, and porches made for napping or sipping lemonade. Even though I usually bristle at high-end utopian environments, everything here works seamlessly and effortlessly. There’s an impressively large Inn with a library and smores-ready fire pits tucked behind it, plus dining that ranges from grab-and-go casual to sit-down spots and a slightly higher-end option." - Corey Seymour

"Set within 20,000 private acres of Low Country nature preserve, this resort immerses families in tidal marshes and oak-lined landscapes with guided hikes, salt‑flat fly-fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and two massive tree houses—one with a slide and rope ladder. Accommodations span guest rooms, cottages, and private homes; dining includes nine outlets from ice cream to a vintage pizza truck; and the Paintbox kids club emphasizes outdoor exploration while Children’s Night and gear partnerships make stays easier for families." - Kathryn Romeyn, Devorah Lev-Tov
