Where to Stop on a Tour of Colorado Distilleries | Eater Denver

"From its home base in the town of Crested Butte, Montanya has mastered three American rums: Platino, Oro, and Exclusiva. And all of them are made with exactly four ingredients: sugar cane, water, yeast, and honey." - Josie Sexton

Who knew that some of the best Tiki cocktails would be in Crested Butte, CO? My husband and I were blown away, not only by the incredible flavor palette and healthy ingredients, but also the mixologists at the bar were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Sara was absolutely fantastic — could not give a higher recommendation.

Google
OMG, don’t miss “Montanya Distillers” in Crested Butte! Vibrant Tasting Room, buzzing with people and incredible rums—Platino, Oro, Exclusiva, Valentia. The Señorita’s spicy kick and Fiery Passion’s tropical zing are unforgettable. Passionate staff and electric atmosphere make this a must-visit gem! We’re hooked!

Google
A must stop for rum lovers. The best American rum I can recall trying. I loved their “whiter” rums, most especially the pineapple habanero infused version which was a classy take (not a sugar bomb like many others I’ve tried). The aged rums are solid, expressive, just don’t expect Jamaican monster.

Google
If you’re into rum and rum-based drinkings, this place definitely needs your attention. Note that they only sell one brand of rum, Montanya’s, of course. The drinks were fantastic, meticulously made and a pleasure to drink. Like other places in town, this one fills up quickly. Abbie, our bartender, was courteous and made us fantastic cocktails. We’re looking forward to our next visit.

Google
One of the best experiences we’ve had! From the service to the cocktails just exceptional! We are only sad we found it on our last night in town. What a beautiful place with beautiful people! Grateful.

Google
Good vibes, great company, superb cocktails! If we ever make it back to Crested Butte this will be our first stop. A top notch gem, complete with impromptu karaoke to close out the night. Happy Birthday Renee!! 🥳

OMG!! What a great place. If you're in Crested Butte, Colorado, and you like rum, or just good drinks, this place is a must stop. Delicious rum, great atmosphere, and phenomenal service. My FAVORITE drink is the Señorita, please get one for me! ....and, my husband loved the flight!

Google
Once again, the Maharaja did not disappoint. Such great flavors! Other cocktails are amazing as well. Great staff too!! A must-go place to go in Crested Butte!!

Yelp
Came in here after a long day snowboarding and this was my favorite place to Aprés all season! There are only a handful of tables and some bar seating, and the ambience is so cute, well lit with lots of fresh feeling decor and light airy vibes. We took two seats at the bar and were lucky enough to have Tina helping us, she was so friendly and knowledgeable, really a gem. We started with the fiery passion and the rum sour and were impressed by the complexity of flavors in both, the fiery passion was a real winner, with a taste of passionfruit, and the habanero pineapple in the rum really coming through, but not in a overly sweet way, just enough. The chili sugar rim was a unique way to really set it over the top. The rum sour was also delicious, the Demerara, giving it almost a hint of an old-fashioned, but keeping it light and foamy throughout. Such an incredible set of cocktails. I also had the tomato bisque soup, it was so yummy and cheesy, and the staff were nice enough to bring out some local made bread toasted on the side. Then, Tina made us her own special cocktail, a take on a strawberry spicy rum, with an egg white to give it a delicious foamy texture. All the drinks are delicious, and Tina noted that they were the strongest cocktails in the area, with 2 1/2 shots per drink. We were definitely feeling fun and talkative as we were leaving. This place was so upbeat, with games to choose from, but still keeping a refined mountain vibe. We tried to go back again the next day, but had finished earlier and the bar didn't open yet! Bummer. We don't find our way to crested Butte often but next time we are there, it will surely be a stop.

Yelp
Delightful cocktail bar with very nice and imaginative rum drinks and a good snack/sandwich menus

Yelp
Every time we're in CB, we have to come here. We even sit at the same table, right in front of the neon "Montanya Rum" sign. The cocktails are so delicious and I love the ambiance (very different than the old Montanya location a few doors down, which was much more laid back/down to earth I'd say while this is more upscale/boogie). Our group of four got some tasty cocktails - to start, I got an orange blossom rum sour. This is the only reason this time wasn't a five-star review, due to some miscommunication with the bartender. I've gotten their maharaja cocktail in the past (delicious) so I was deciding whether to get the same cocktail or a new one. After I asked about the rum sour, I decided to stick with what I'd known, the maharaja, and told the bartender. She came to the table a few minutes later with the rum sour and I politely said I'd ordered the maharaja - she was rather rude and said something to the effect of "nope, you ordered the rum sour. You wanted to try something new." Excuse me for remembering what I ordered! My friend said she definitely agreed I had ordered the maharaja after the bartender walked away. No matter, the rum sour was still very tasty, I just thought the encounter was rather rude (what happened to customer is always right?). The rest of the wait staff was super friendly. Our party of four was playing a card game called Pitch and one of the servers came over and was asking about it and said how his sister loved to play it! For the second cocktail, I got their seasonal Princess Peach, with fresh muddled peaches, rum, local honey, ginger syrup and fresh lemon. This cocktail was delicious and super gingery which I loved. Overall, delicious cocktails once again.

Yelp
OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! I am not a huge run drinker but all the cocktails we had were amazing. I could have stayed there and tried more all night but they were strong and went down easy. The staff is super friendly and you can tell it is no secret how great Montanya's is - if we wouldn't have gotten there early on a Friday night we wouldn't have been able to experience it. The rum flight was interesting and surprising to me. I highly recommend experiencing it. I got the Kokomo and the Boss Colada. Both were flavorful and I couldn't tell had rum in them from the flavors. I can't wait to visit Crested Butte again to go back!

Michele L Beecher B.

Yelp
It's been a couple years since I've been here and first time at the new location. The drinks are double the price from before but still yummy. Very limited food menu. Nothing gluten free. Bummed that they no longer serve popcorn.

Yelp
I am glad a friend told me about this place, what a gem in the heart of Crested Butte! The atmosphere is very inviting with a contemporary vibe, velvet chairs, and a nice bar. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. My husband had a flight of various rhums and my basil rhum cocktail was wonderful. The selection is impressive, and it was hard to choose!
google avatar

Cassel M.

Yelp
Can't believe we haven't been here sooner! My husband is a rum fanatic and usually it's a hot no for me because it's so tiki fantastic but i loved this place. I had the senorita, rum pineapple habanero amazingness and I can't wait to go back and get another one
google avatar

Irene G.

Yelp
Absolutely loved our afternoon today with Barry and Chris! THE most delicious cocktails, flights and ambiance, not to mention the GRUMp box to rid of your bad juju! Thank you Montanya! Irene and Kathy

Yelp
Rum is the best. Nicest staff. Fun snacks. I come here weekly and I still haven't tried everything on the menu.
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
Finding this place is Crested Butte was definitely highlight visiting the town. While there for a conference, my coworkers and I made a reservation since we saw how crowded it was the day before. The drinks definitely didn't disappoint! I got the Kokomo which has a nice balance of sweet and sour. We also got a charcuterie board which was portioned nicely. If you're taking a trek up there, please go support them!
google avatar

Haylee O.

Yelp
Cool vibes!! They've redone the place since I've been here and both were great. Can't go wrong with any drink. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Excellent food, excellent service, great people, and an awesome mission. First dinner was so good I came back the next night. Had the White Room several times. Yum.
google avatar

Yelp
Good service - attentive and supplying information on the various cocktails. This venue has amazing rum drinks and small bites. We enjoyed the Kokomo, Maharaja, Fiery Passion, Smokehouse, a special summer Peach drink and Cucumber Templar. Montanya makes all their own bitters as well as - of course - the rum. I am always hoping that they will bring back the 24 Karat which was a carrot juiced based cocktail - it was incredible! The artichoke dip was a nice snack while we were enjoying our cocktails. The tasting room is small so get there early as they don't take reservations.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great spot to grab a before or after dinner drink. They only serve light snacks, meat and cheese boards. We went and only got cocktails before dinner down the street! We took the waiters recommendations and we loved every drink! I had the smoked old fashioned drink, which was presented with the smoke pouring out, amazing. Great place with local rum!
google avatar

Laura J.

Yelp
Excellent service and cocktails. Highly recommend. They make their own infusers and syrups and the rum is excellent. Great atmosphere.

Yelp
Covid update: masks and social distancing is totally in place We heard of this place and just had to try it out. The copper distiller is upstairs - check it out! The Black and Snowy is good but borders on the sweet side. Better yet is the New Old Fashioned. Smooth flavor, good size, good cherry, and Yum! Interested in buying a bottle? They can serve you a flight of their 4 rums. Just try picking one! We decided to go light on eats. Jalapeño poppers wrapped in bacon are good and not spicy. Alone with Korean wings it was a perfect order. Yet the wings were soooo good we had to get another order! Not spicy, but crisp with sesame seeds made us come back for more. This was definitely a winner!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the highlights of crested butte. Perfect place to have some cocktails and relax. Love the pineapple habanero infused rum!
google avatar

Jordyn D.

Yelp
Stopped into Montanya for a pre dinner cocktail. I thought it was very trendy inside and a great selection of cocktails. I got a cucumber jalapeño drink and thought it was good. Nice bar and seating. They had a selection of small bites, so not necessarily the kind of place to go for dinner. I would recommend for drinks before or even after dinner. They did have a nice charcuterie board although we did not try it. Overall great selection of drinks and we would go back.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
We went here for the first time last night. We were seated pretty quickly and ordered cocktails and a cheese plate. We also ordered tasters of all the rums (small pours which are complimentary) - it was nice to try them on their own! Our server was very friendly and gave us more in depth information on the rum and the cocktails we were looking at. Recommend the cheese plate if you're looking for an appetizer with your drinks!

Yelp
Montanya was by the best surprise out our Crested Butte trip. From the time we arrived to the time we left, we had a great time! Our server was awesome. Seated us immediately and sat us next to a heater so my dear wife wouldn't complain about the cold and ruin my evening because her feet and hands would overpower all feelings and conversations.......... Sorry, side tracked there for a second... Back to the review. I loved sitting outside because we got a view of the busy street, and had an awesome dog that was at the table next to us. Well behaved and super friendly. Shout out to the couple who were the dog owners. You 2 raised an awesome dog! We started with drinks. My wife got The Sour and was perfect for her. She likes sour drinks and the alcohol was not too overpowering for her. A perfect mild drink. My drink was called the Elixir. It wasn't on the menu but the couple with the awesome dog had ordered it and I am so glad I ordered it. It is like a Hot Toddy but their own twist to it. Again, shout ou to the couple! Now my Ramen is the reason why we were surprised. It was REALLY good! Never thought a distillery would produce bomb Ramen! Our server suggested the pork and egg with it and he was on point. Definitely top 2 meal in Crested Butte. Montanya Distillers will be a place that is on our list of going back when we come back to CB.

Yelp
Somehow we always manage to plan mountain trips during off season (unknowingly). Montanya was one of the only places open for dinner, and we are so glad we had the opportunity to dine there! We had delicious mojitos while we waited for a table. The staff was extremely courteous. We started off with the Korean BBQ wings - amazing; great flavor and toppings. My husband had the Ahi Tuna Bowl and I had the Amalfi bowl. Both solid choices that don't make you feel overstuffed. Loved the tahini, goat cheese, and sweet potatoes in mine. Will be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
Rum distillery-- super cute place. We sat at the bar & the bartender was super friendly. I'm not a huge rum drinker but my cocktail was so freaking good! Crab dip was a nice surprise too
google avatar

Caroline Y.

Yelp
This is a rum distillery that offers a huge yummy cocktail list and an Asian Fusion menu. Most options are gluten free/dairy free which I really appreciated. They have a lot of vegan/vegetarian options as well. I ordered the pho as an entree and it was horrible! Please skip it. I frequent Asian joints and this did not taste remotely like Vietnamese pho. The ramen was okay. Definitely get the Korean wing appetizer. The sauce is great! The atmosphere is cute and they have outdoor seating which is totes COVID friendly. Cocktails are $12 each and yummy.

Yelp
We managed to finally get out of the house for a great ski weekend after confining ourselves for the past year due to the Pandemic. It was a fantastic weekend and we stumbled upon this little rum place and thought we'd check it out. I love local distillers and figured I don't know enough about rum so I should try it. Service a was a tad slow, but I get it. You're accommodating folks amidst a health crisis and you're doing your best. All out - the cocktails and environment are great. There were so many I wanted to try and I couldnt because... well... I'd be totally trashed. Drank the painkillers (my fave) and a new old fashioned and we tried the "the jives" and the infamous "maharaja". While they were all great, the maharaja (their most popular drink supposedly) was an assault on the sense. The ginger kicked my ass and stung deep into my sinuses. Whoa. Anyways... we'll definitely be back. Great drinks, good people, and as a LGBT family... welcome and all inclusive (see sign behind the drinks in photo).

Yelp
Spiiiiicey!!! And sooooo goood! Day of hard skiing and this is the perfect close out sore ski!
google avatar

Felicia M.

Yelp
Great local spot! We stopped in the first time for a night cap and had their twist on whiskey classics (New Fashioned and Manhattan). Their Oro rum was very smooth and worked really well. Never would've thought to swap out run for whiskey! Also, the rum truffles were the cherry on top of a great visit! The next night we came in after a day out in the snow because we noticed they had pho and ramen on the menu. Both had excellent flavors, fresh/unique ingredients, and the service was fast and friendly! The only pain point was the inefficient "social distancing" set up as you are pretty much on top of the table next to you. But, we just stayed masked up and ate quickly. Overall would highly recommend compared to other places in town!

Amy H.

Yelp
cocktails are delicious !! food also amazing ! staff was helpful polite and knowledgeable. go here !
google avatar

Olivia L.

Yelp
Stopped here for an after dinner night cap drink. The place was super cute and they had a great selection of rum cocktails. My boyfriend was commenting that most of the cocktails were rum based so I had to make him aware it was a rum distiller I got the Toddy Shot which was extremely lemon-y! Like wowza. It was good though ...and great price at $5. I'd like to come again and try more drinks!
google avatar

Patrizia G.

Yelp
We came here after a day of skiing to get a nice warm alcoholic beverage. Walking in I really liked the atmosphere and decoration of the place. They had an entire menu of different drinks including winter and summer drinks and their speciality is rum. We both decided on one of the hot drinks: I had the Wassail which the waitress described as a hot mulled cider and my friend had the Elixir. They do also serve legit food but we opted for the free popcorn as we were gonna get dinner a little later. As far as the drinks I was a little disappointed. The Wassail was very strong and pretty much just tasted of rum. The elixir wasn't bad but also wasn't amazing. I'm not sure if we just ordered the wrong drink or caught the bartender on an off night. We both decided we would come back and give it another try ordering some different drinks. The place was definitely crowded which is always a good sign and the food I saw people eating looked very yummy. We'll be back and hopefully will be more impressed with the drinks next time.

Yelp
Excellent services and excellent Fiery Passion cocktail! I was initially skeptical since most cocktails are too sweet and this one also happened to have pineapple! But when I saw that it included passion fruit, I just had to try it. It was delicious and you can taste the passion fruit! I would have multiple if I wasn't recovering from a cold! The scallop was tasty but I didn't care too much for the sweet coconut sauce. I might have preferred it to be savory over sweet. The ramen is delicious--but don't think of it as a ramen! Think of it as a ramen-inspired noodle dish! The vegetables addition of flower and what appears to be pea shots, back chok was a tasty addition. Pass on the hard chewy pork!

Bailey W.

Yelp
I was a hollow shell of a man before entering this establishment for what would pan out to be the greatest evening of my life. What began as a disappointing day on the mountain, transformed into one of the best days of my life thanks to the friendly staff at Montanya. Joe immediately greeted us with energy and enthusiasm. Lauren spun magic into glasses that quenched a parched travelers thirst. Kayla and Sam topped off the evening with friendly conversation and professionalism. Amazing ambiance and experience. Single best experience of my life. 10/10.

Yelp
- Great outdoor seating including street to get some rays. Or shade - Drinks are fun, well balanced and not with overpowering sweet rums - Service is prompt - Get there early. Like literally at opening. Place fills up quick - Food is underrated and recommended Overall great experience with multiple drinks. Good recommendations, nice spicy options and, as a regular partaker in another dark spirit whiskey, I found their rum to be very smooth and lacking the typical sweetness (yuck) I associate with rum. I had/sampled the Caldera (semi-spicy, honey lavender syrup made it a little sweeter than expected but overall good), Mojito (I mean classic can't go wrong and very boozy/perfect), and Firey Passion (not expecting a not so sweet, super spicy and delicious mixture with such an underrated fruit in the passionfruit. My fav). Charcuterie plate was delicious too. We sat outside, dead of summer, great people watching in a nice, shady spot.
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
Love coming here for the delicious local rum drinks! Delicious, as always and locally owned. Didn't have food this time around but everything looked delicious too
google avatar

Talisa D.

Yelp
Update! This place impressed us so much we returned for a second night in a row haha. The three cocktails and "animal fries" we had definitely did not disappoint. Quick friendly service again. The kokomo was incredible - my fiance who loves coconut ordered it but even I (who hates coconut) thought it was amazing. It was a creamy gentle lime rum flavor. I enjoyed the wassil which was like an alcoholic version of my childhood favorite, carmel apple spice from Starbucks. Finally the cafe picante was like a spiced coffee from heaven. We've now tried five of their cocktails and none have disappointed in the slightest - high praise from ppl who don't usually order cocktails. Animal fries were made of crispy sweet potatoes with a soft interiors, parmesan, and beef bulgogi. We may just come back tomorrow

Deirdre K.

Yelp
We are so glad we stopped in to Montanya on a trip through Crested Butte. We visited two years ago when they were in their old location, but I have to say we liked their new location even more. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting and their rum-based cocktails are so good. We especially liked the "new old fashioned" which was fantastic. We actually stopped in twice while we were in town. Fun place with great cocktails. We didn't order any snacks but saw one of their charcuterie-style boards which looked fantastic! Next time!
google avatar

Mikaila S.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this spot. They have two outdoor patios which is perfect for the beautiful weather in Crested Butte. Their food menu is smaller but they have something for everyone. The drink menu, on the other hand, is pretty extensive since they distill their own rum. All the drinks I tasted were amazing! Definitely a great stop if you're in town. Oh, and they have popcorn for you to grab and snack on as you're hanging out.
google avatar

TJ K.

Yelp
First time at the new location. Drinks were great as usual but the Gulten free bread was horrible. The charcuterie board was a bit to be desired for the price. Service was good. Like the new location. Brought friends visiting from out of town so was pretty disappointed.
google avatar

Rali C.

Yelp
Neat place with great cocktails! The staff is friendly and helpful. They distill their own rum, which is the foundation of their cocktails. We had the Boss Colada, White Room and Strawberry Jive. All were fresh, not overly sweet and really well made. They also have a good menu, we tried the warm hand cut chip. Great pairing for the drinks. Would recommend as a nice end of a skiing day.
google avatar

Meredith P.

Yelp
I wish I could remember names of the amazing cocktails but honestly can imagine all the cocktails are excellent. Atmosphere on point.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in last night and this place was packed! Maybe it was because it was Valentine's Day, maybe it was because it was a Friday night on a holiday weekend, or maybe it was because it's awesome. Grabbed a drink menu at the bar, it was super easy to navigate and had such a wide variety of drinks. Within a minute or two of stepping in a waitress popped over and let us know she could take our order so we didn't have to grab the attention of someone behind the bar. We weren't quite ready yet so she made a couple of recommendations, mentioned the specials, pointed out the free popcorn in the corner, and returned a few minutes later. When we placed our order she let us know it would be about 10 minutes (I don't mind waiting as long as I know they're just busy, not that they've forgotten), and we helped ourselves to some popcorn. We moved to the end of the bar so we had somewhere to sit our bowl and she came by with a pitcher or water and some glasses. When the drinks came out (Wake Up Call and Thai Boxer) they were extremely unique from each other and both incredibly delicious! So glad we stopped in here and experienced this local gem.
google avatar

Kristen N.

Yelp
Such a cute stop and a great local story! They are the distillery and they make amazing rum, bitters, t shirts etc. Their food is also amazing! We had some of their home made chips and sauces. And they were amazing! We also tried a flight of rum and Wade, our server, gave us a great education and such great recommendations for drinks. Can't remember the names of what all we had except the ruby red and the manhattan but this is a great spot and the people are so nice and cool! And a cute patio our front that is dog friendly!
google avatar

Prairie S.

Yelp
The concept of serving sophisticated craft cocktails with house-distilled rum whilst offering tasty small-plates so people can linger and savor their drinks all in one setting is a superb one. We tried their "Maharaja" which used cardamom and ginger, a toasted nutty cocktail with hazelnut, and another one which used grapefruit and basil. All the drinks were in a class of their own, made with evident care and attention to detail. The waitress was pleasant, outside seating was very relaxing, and the live music a plus. Their small plates are thoughtfully presented and taste rather good, such as hand cut fries and fried ravioli and jalapeno poppers...just the fare to absorb those drinks. I would highly recommend this spot, because it is doing an exceptional job at a selective niche of service in drinks and food for people with discerning palates who wish to savor a cocktail and linger with conversation.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Really fun place in CB. On a Saturday evening in Oct, we were surprised that they had a wait only because didn't know the whole town would be so hoppin'. But, we made note to show up early the next night. My husband and I both got the ramen, which was really good. I don't drink much, but since it's a distillery I got one and was impressed by the variety in their drink menu.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
But wait I like rum?! No matter what your preferred spirit is, you will enjoy one of their many unique cocktails. I was truly impressed with their infused rums and the flavor profiles they put together. A particular favorite, I hope to try and recreate, was the Phuket Sunset! This thai flavor infused martini captured a perfect blend of sweet, herbal, and just a slight kick of spice. DO Not be intimidated by a little thai spice as they have perfectly balanced it out for a delightful experience. Another with a slight spice is the Caldera which range in number 2. They once again have created a drink that perfectly levels the jalapeno spice with soothing lavender, mint, and honey so that you only get the earthiness of this green pepper. I forgot to ask but I will now be looking for this rum at cocktail bars in Denver in hopes to enjoy their rum some more!

E R.

Yelp
We stopped in here to grab a late lunch after arriving in town... Not realizing it was a distillery...lol. Our drinks and food were delicious. I had a komono and hubby had an old fashioned (which definitely did not taste like rum! We shared a small cheese plate and I had the scallops, my hubby had the ahi bowl. We were both stuffed so got some truffles to go. The service was great despite them being busy. Definitely stop in here if you're adventurous and like rum. They have both a front and back patio too which was perfect for our dog.
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
This place is so much fun. We were in town two days and were here once for lunch (sat outside) and then the next day for dinner (sat inside just across from the bar). The service was friendly both times. The food was out of sight. The John Daly was my drink of choice. For food, it was the Ahi Salad and the Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Ihno L.

Yelp
Dare I say it: The rum cocktails are good, but the food is even better. And definitely hit my sweet spot that craves well-executed and creative Asian fusion fare. We came here twice in 3 days. The Korean BBQ wings and Animal fries were *perfect* after a long hike. And the Ramen (+soft boiled egg, +pork belly) was even better on a chilly, overcast afternoon. Keep it up, guys! We'll drop by for another round the next time we're in town.

Yelp
I have been meaning to review this fun spot for lunch, drinks, and will need to try for dinner. We have been there mainly for their fun rum drinks, but recently tried the lunch menu. My healthy salad was so tasty, my husband's ramen was delicious, and our friend's salad pick was also really good. We now know this is a fun spot for the food as well as the drinks. Great atmosphere, service is good, drinks are so fun a and imaginative. Highly recommend when in CB.

Yelp
Great restaurant/distillery. Very good runs. Aged selections are somewhat akin to complex bourbon. Mixed drinks are definitely worth trying. The cocktail highlights were the Maharaja, Caldera and White Room. Ears are not to be missed - bacon wrapped, cream cheese stuffed grilled jalapeños, Korean wings, and bulgogi ramen were outstanding. Highly recommend for apres ski. Live music is a bonus.
