Fantastic service, brews, and vibe at this location. Props to Ryan for making our first visit memorable!

Like the beer quite a bit. Cool spot. Hours are bit wonky. Was having a beer and playing a board game with friends here after a movie across street. They where turning poeple away at 9 on a friday.

Lovely, comfy and warm brewery! You can bring outside food in to eat with their most awesome brew. Michael was very friendly and helpful and answered all of our questions about the brewery. Would recommend. 👍👍👍👍

This brewery doesn't serve food but does have snacks. You are allowed to bring outside food in. They have a great variety on tap. They have a rather large seating area from where you can clearly see the brewery. When I went in I fell in love with their kölsch, if i remember correctly its called lickety split. Haven't had one as good since. In addition to that they have more than a couple of good IPAs.

Nice little tap house to enjoy some brews. I tried the Love Oregon, which was great. The atmosphere was great. It was a quiet night with some folks playing card games. Service was great

I hosted a 15 person happy hour at Montavilla Brew Works. The service was excellent, and the beer selection was fantastic. Loved the indoor and outdoor seating options, and it was great that we could bring in our own pizza from across the street. The staff was super responsive and accommodating, making it an easy and enjoyable event. Highly recommend for any group gathering.

I've had the pleasure of attending several events at Montavilla Brew Works this past year, and the folks here have always been kind and hospitable. Portland has so many cool microbreweries, I love that there's one right in my backyard in Montavilla. The semi-industrial space has a large bar inside with seating for 8-10 people, plus a handful of tables scattered throughout the interior of the building. Visitors will also find a tented, outdoor seating area for enjoying drinks. The brewery allows patrons to bring food from other establishments to enjoy in their space. I've only just recently been introduced to Montavilla Brew Works, and though I don't drink much, I've absolutely fallen in love with their Jerry Cherry Berry sour ale. It's absolutely delicious! I'm sure I'll be checking back in sometime soon to see what else they have on tap!

Katie poured our drinks and she was great! Very friendly, personable and knowledgeable about the drinks on tap. We'll be back!

Always a fun spot to come by! I usually have their stuff in cans and like the treat of being in the area to get it on tap. The staff are very friendly, and the space is cozy. I especially like that they brew a good range of beers so there's something for everyone!

Steve and I had an absolutely wonderful sour ale from Montavilla recently! Anymore I am cautious with sours as they can be a bit too sweet. But the Jerry Cherry Berry Sour was absolutely perfect with it's sour aspect going on nicely along with as the name implies cherry and berries like raspberries for example. As I already mentioned the tart, sour and dry aspects were perfectly timed with this very fine beer making a great sour beer! We just had the one beer but if this beer was any indication that the rest of their beers are this good then this is definitely a winning brewery across the board!

Montavilla has a nice neighborhood brewery for themselves ~ variety of tasty brews, cozy taproom seating right next to the barrels, backyard patio feels. Service is friendly, nice to offer suggestions and smiley. This brewery does not have in-house grub; MBW welcomes takeout to bring in. Cool spot to hangout for the pup.

Nice little brewery & taproom, and they currently have an ESB on cask! Decent variety of their own beer styles on tap along with a few other options. The lady working the taps was friendly & happy to answer questions. They don't have a kitchen , but they do have a few bagged snacks available for purchase and I believe you can bring outside food in. Nice neighborhood spot!

I visited this cool SE brewery with a couple of friends and it was a great little place to stop in and have a brew. I had the red which I really enjoyed as it was kind of dark and toasty for a red which was perfect considering the typical cold and wet Portland day. I definitely want to come back when it's warmer as it looked like they had some great outdoor seating too.

I identify as a female Pit/Rhodesian Ridgeback, and I am here to "shed" light on what's "dog friendly" and what isn't. 0/10 dog friendly spot (it isn't) My humans and I live very close to this brewery, but have only been once because they don't allow dogs. My humans have tried to explain to me that other humans don't like dog hair in their beer (so rude) and I think they're just scared that they'll love me too much and can't afford to revamp their logo to my face. It's fine. (No it's not) My humans like the draft choices and think it's cool that they host live shows, but I think it's too loud. I hope one day they realize how sad they are that they can't have me there even though there are doors to the brewery area and allow me in their very spacious outdoor area.

Good variety of tasty different beers. Lots of interesting snacks. Good proximity to other awesome restaurants. Nice girl working. What else to say!

So happy this is walkable, friendly, but most of all they brew GREAT BEER. All the months of waiting for them to open paid off. As I sit here reviewing, I'm enjoying a What Would You Do With A Drunken Jerry? 10% Barleywine smooth and dangerous! Happy 1st Birthday guys

This is a true gem right here in our neighborhood! The tap list is a good size with a decent variety of beers and ciders. They always have some guest taps on offer as well. I would be here every day if I had the time. The taproom is cozy in winter (picture a bar, tall tables for two or four, people playing CRIBBAGE (yay!!!), light snacks, food trucks across the street, nice music, and awesome swag! Plus the whole place opens up to their Biergarten when our warm summer temperatures return. I prefer a brown ale year round but usually have to settle for something else (browns are scarce in Portland, unfortunately) but I'm always happy with MVB's options. It's also a perfect spot to stop for a pint or two before/after a movie at the Academy just across the street.

Finally. A brew pub close to me. 6 house brews on tap. 5 guest brews on tap. Plenty of inside seating and a patio on the side. No food service, so bring you're own food. No prob. Their beers are mostly pale ales with one dark(brown) ale. Wednesday gets hoppin', and they get busy. Nice addition to the Montavilla neighborhood. Yes....Yes........bring your bike and stick a growler on it!

Great beer has become commonplace in Portland so MBW in this way is just another brewpub. What makes MBW better than most others is the cozy atmosphere, nice outdoor seating area, lack of bourgie crap and a truly relaxed scene. Sorry Portland, you need to be a Montavillian to have this beer out your backdoor.

Stopped in here for a pint. Had the winter IPA I think it was called "concussion" which felt about right it packs a load of ABV. The bar space is nice with a friendly bartendress and cozy lighting. Comfy fat bar stools. Looks like they have a big patio too (Twas dark and rainy so we didn't go out there) The brewery part is up front and has fluorescent lights hanging....muy muy mal on the eyes. Probably great for the Brewer but for patrons it's harsh. You can bring in food from nearby places...pizza right across the street. Nice folks. Interesting beer we will go back to check out more brews and support the Montavilla scene.

I can't put my finger on what is so "meh" about this place. The beer is fine, the patio is great, and the lack of food isn't that big of a deal. The beer styles are varied, but never quite excite me. The service has been apathetic each time I've visited. The hours aren't really in my prime ready-for-beer hours. I always feel like the place should be hopping, but it never is. For the reasons I listed? Maybe. Haven't put my finger on it. I'm glad to support a Montavilla brewery, so I'll keep coming back. Easier access or facilitation of food while hanging out on the patio would be a massive bonus.

fantastic beer with a smile. great neighborhood feel. the owners are deadheads and i love seeing the Jerry photo and concert poster, althoigh its not as obvious as being at a McMennimans. Very nice atmosphere, and the clientele seems local and friendly. not many choices for food, just a few snacks, some decent pretzels would be a nice touch to the snack choices. The beer ive tried has been fantastic, and ive about 6 or seven. I tend to lean on the Lesh is More pale ale. Keep making great beer in a cozy, friendly space, and ill keep buying pints and filling growlers. Cheers.

Awesome beer! I had the Stick and Frame Blonde IPA, the 2013 Oak Aged Barleywine, and the Galaxy Double IPA. I can tell that the brewer enjoys hops, because most beers taste a little hop forward to me - but in a good way. The interior of this renovated Car Repair shop has been cleaned up with exposed natural concrete walls and timber roof beams. The tasting room and brewing operations are combined in a large, bright open space. The staff is very friendly. I am excited about this new brewery in the hood! The tasting area has a large garage door that is open when the weather is nice and offers outdoors seating with tables and umbrellas. I've heard rumors that they will have food carts here someday soon. All in all, I recommend this business to check out because it represents the quality craft beer that Oregon is known for, and it is located in a prime area for walking or dining in Montavilla. The beer is always really good!! Its a little spendy, but well worth it. The atmosphere is a little weird. I feel like im always being to loud or obnoxious. People are very quite and to themselves! Otherwise its a really cool spot

Have had a couple of their beers. am across the street at the most excellent flying pie pizza twice a month, and finally got here. Humble tap room. Better to be out in the beer garden, rugged, then next to the brewing equipment, but hey, this is how breweries start out.Very friendly service. About 14 of their own beers. covering a good range, couple guest ciders and a great guest beer this time. Their own beers above average, working more the mid range with a couple sessions & such. Only good is some little bags of chips, but they openly encourage folks to bring food from nearby--neighborly.

Love this place! Great beer selection. Nice vibe. Although they don't have food there, they let you bring in any outside food. If you're familiar with the area, there's tons of excellent food options just feet away from the brewery. No minors are allowed, so depending on your view, that could be a great thing, or a slight inconvenience for you. Cheers!

Good place. Friendly service. It's just a patio where you order at the counter. But there's a great vibe outside to enjoy the sky and a pint with friends at the picnic tables.

1st time here and I must say absolutely delicious beers. Sampled 2 and ordered 3 different ones. My favorite was the Jerry Berry. We will be back for sure. Cool atmosphere and crowd as well.

Awesome place close to call your, "Home Bar". Figure out what your favorite days are, then pick a different night! It's a beautiful place with some cool people.

Visited this place from out of town and impressed with the beers. The best option is to try all 15 brews on tap in a sampler. Montavilla has many different styles that can make anyone happy. We appreciated the relaxed Friday afternoon vibe and the outdoor beer garden.

I'm a tough critic on beer, and just don't think the beer is very good here. I want them to succeed, and would love to have a brewery do well in this neighborhood. I wouldn't come here just for the beer. Nice place to hangout, and nice bartenders, and close to nice places to have lunch/dinner or catch a movie. Décor is decent with tables adjacent to the tanks, and an open area when the weather is nice. Great finishing on the auto shop building and the empty shell it was before installing the brewery and pub. The beer, though, suffers from a lack of execution. Many of the pale ales, and red/amber ales or lagers taste pretty much the same. (Same thing happens with Lagunitas beers- all the same hop combination and all taste the same). Not really bad beers, but mediocre in a saturated, deep, beer market. Tried their Belgian beers last visit, and again was disappointed. Not much "Belgian" character you'd expect. Little to no fruity/spicy flavor. What tasted like American hops and sweet finish in the tripel. Out of the beers I have tried here, I'd go for the more true to style and forgiving imperial stout and (barrel aged) strong ale or barleywine. Please visit, bring Montavilla Brew Works some business, and feel free to disagree with my assessment of their beer.

My wife and I went to check this place out because they had a nice selection of beers and cider. I ended up coming down with food poisoning while we were still in the bar, and I had an extended stay in the bathroom. The person working behind the bar was so concerned for my well-being that he offered to call the cops for me, presumably as some sort of moral support for my compromised condition. Needless to say, we will never be returning. My cursory observation of the place revealed a perfectly normal drinking establishment where you can go and sit and watch sports and drink, as long as you generally conform to the social norms as established by plain and fearful white men.

Chill brewery on Stark st. They had about 7/8 board games to choose from, which I always appreciate. Also, the bartender working was super sweet. After he announced "last call," a group of people walked in 5 minutes later and he still served them. It was cute and cozy with reasonable prices. :)

This is a wonderful microbrewery with a strong neighborhood feel. Right now they are only selling by delivery or takeout due to the pandemic. I think maybe my favorite beer of theirs is the Helles Lager, "Körabräu". But Ben's Barley Wine is also really special. My wife loves the Jerry Berry Sour.

The owner/brewer is really nice. His beers are great, and he's hoping to have a full line-up eventually. Until then there are 5 guest taps in addition to his 4-6 brews. The brewery and taproom is in this old car repair/storage/dump that he cleaned up and brought back to life :) There's no food - but you are encouraged to bring your own in. There's tons of outdoor seating and the old garage doors are usually open. It's a great space.

Love Michael and the staff at Montavilla Brew Works. Great beer, Great environment, always enjoyable! Love the Plywood Pilsner!

This is like a dream home away from home. Great beer and great people (really great people) who run this place. The ISA is my go to beer for any occasion. The Flam Tap may be my favorite IPA. The Pale and Blonde ales are top notch. Great job on the stouts and porters, too. Never heard a bad song on the stereo either.

The outdoor seating was very nice on a fall day. Very friendly service and the pomegranate blueberry cider was delicious. For only being opened for 2 months they seem to be very popular among the locals--they even donated drinks to the Farmers Market down the street.

This is my home away from home. Melissa & Michael (the brewer) are warm and welcoming, and Alex & Nick (who work bar) are gentle & hilarious! Folks here play board games together (there is a shelf of games to enjoy, maintained by the staff) and the beer is AWESOME-- truly the best porter I've ever had---and their IPA's are incredible enough to convert a person (me) who has had a hard time with IPA's all her life but was surprised with the need to order a second one after the first! You will not be disappointed! You owe it to yourself to drop by! Seriously!

When Montavilla Brew Works opened I was really excited to have a new brewery in the neighborhood but was overall very disappointed with my experience. The establishment has great interior, bar and outdoor sitting area. I am giving Montavilla Brew Works only two stars is because they don't allow dogs in the outdoor seating area, and their hours are unreasonable. While I respect that they are a production brewery and therefore don't allow dogs inside, that they will not let me sit outside with my dog is enough for me to get my beer elsewhere. On top of that, they close at 9 on Fridays and 8 on Saturdays. When I asked the bartender if their hours were so scarce because they hadn't been open long, he told me that Montavilla is a "sleepy" neighborhood that doesn't really go out on the weekends so they didn't see the need to be open any later. With bars down the street that are open until at least 10 on the weekends and will let me sit outside with my dog, I don't have any desire to go back to Montavilla Brew Works anytime soon.

Great little ADA accessible Brewery with 2$ Taster glasses, 16 Taps, and large Pints. Sweet REAL ale list, for those of us doin this since yge 1980's. Menu easy to read at the Bar for fast Service. If a line makes u panic for being Beerless, just grab a Beer list from a Pub Table (very tiny type) to be ready! 4 oz Taster for Big Styles...so i was very happy to have 3 (wanted more but Academy Movietime too near!) Dale's Large Pint of Cider was an Alter-ego Semi- Dry. He was happy too, thankfully, cuz i already DECIDED to come here! Lol - it Is about the Beer. Ale lovers yep, come; for a super mellow flavorful hour. Only a couple tables indoors here for more than 4 ppl so dont bring a crowd who insist on chairs. Foodies know all the great neighbor Cafes. So can u!

SO. GOOD. I really love this place. It's awesome stopping by a restaurant up the block to get something to-go (looking at you, cheese platter from The Observatory and pizza slices from Stark Street Pizza) and bringing it here to snack while having a Bipartisan porter. My fiancé and I have been coming here since it opened and it's really cool to see their beers getting better and more people noticing this little gem. The owner and employees are really nice as well. We pop by Montavilla a lot and always make a point to stop in here.

Nice new brewery! Love the outdoor space--wish it were dog friendly. 12 beer options, 1 cider, and 1 root beer. No real food options--just chips and hard pretzels. You can bring outside food.

I hope this place makes it. It's been over a year (I think) since I remember first seeing the "coming soon" sing posted in the window of this building. We stopped in on a SUPER HOT Sunday after visiting the farmers market across the street, and grabbed a couple beers. They were out of a few things, so the list was narrowed down to only a few choices. The beers were good. They keep it simple, and put out a really nice, if not amazing, product. The inside of the place looks great, too. I think with a little settling in time their beers and patio vibe will only get better. I'd much rather hang out here than at that Beer Bunker place across the street. Or Roscoe's for that matter.

One of my favorite small breweries in Portland, Montavilla is always a good choice for either a place to stop or a beer to drink. Small and cozy, the taproom is also the brew room is also the merchandise room is also the office. It's a good thing they've got on tap in some of the better taprooms around Portland, because they couldn't possibly sell enough beer from this location to make it work. It'd be shoulder to shoulder six days a week. Several barrel-aged variations are on hand, on rotation along with a regular and seasonal assortment of small-batch beer. On any given day you can talk to the very man responsible for making the beer you're drinking, or more likely bend the ear of a local character. Other brewers are known to stop in with samples, but don't expect to get a taste...unless you beg loudly. And point out that you've got their stickers on your bike. It works. Sometimes. Just down the street from another one of Portland's 'top' beer bars, in a small tan building on the corner of an odd cross-street, Montavilla brewing is all stuffed into the front half of the building, with large rolling garage doors offering access to the street and the fenced-in patio. I expect the patio to be popular in the summer months, since it's shaded by the brewery building itself, and private enough to have a conversation with friends without spilling your secrets to the underbelly of Portland. Not that you'd expect any of the other customers to spill those secrets, as it's an older crowd (middle aged? Ehhh?). This reflects the quality of the beer, I believe, anbd the owner's commitment to solid, proven technique. If you can't make the brewery, at least try some of the beers, found on tap locally at a number of populat beer bars...

Amazing craft beer selection and guest taps. Cider and beer available to order. Outside food is encouraged so you can order a pizza from Flying Pie, sit on the patio, and enjoy endless pints of NW beer and pizza.

I'm giving this place 5-Stars for their customer service. I feel kind of weird giving them 5 stars having not had their beer, but the owner was so accommodating that I have to give props. My wife is a Real Estate agent and we wanted to get a beer loving client who bought a home nearby something fun and local as a gift. They weren't even open - but I called and asked if we could come by and buy a gift certificate and they were super cool about it. Love these guys! We'll be doing business with them again in the future to be sure.

I've been here two times and I love it. The building's unimposing presence at the west end of SE Stark Street's business district warms my heart whenever I pass by-- because I know it's a portal to Heaven. The staff are neighborly, the interior is handsome, the patio is ok (although they may have bigger plans for it), the location is perfect, and the beer is superb. I've tried the Lesh is More Pale Ale, Double Tabby Abbey Ale, Red Krush American Amber, and a couple others, thoroughly enjoying them all. Montavilla Brew Works is a classy, top-notch brewery that should be very successful for years to come. Bring your own food (for now), an empty growler, and your best friend(s). Easily 5-stars and they're just getting started.

Michael and company are fantastic! All the beer is tasty and fair prices on everything. All the comments on here about the hours and dogs. It's a functioning brewery first and foremost run mainly by Michael and his wife so the hours reflect that. I know some want to tear it up into the wee hours, but this place is what it is a brewery. And the rules about dogs aren't the owners rules they are the states so if you have an issue with that take it up with your state legislature.

GREAT beers, nice staff, comfy location, great neighborhood. Such a great addition. Downside? Yeah, their hours. Close at 9 on Friday and 8 on Saturdays. Are they Amish? Oh well, get in there early to catch their fine brews and hope that hours may possibly expand at some point?

Would give it no stars. First time to try. Husband and I live a few blocks away and came in at 9:57 on a Sat night after a movie to have a pint. Told by bartender that he already said last call. A quick survey of the scene revealed 4 tables, all with fresh pints. We even offered that we would split a pint just to try the beer. He offered a lame, "Sorry." Yup, we are too. Totally unwelcome feeling in our own neighborhood. The whole Grateful Dead vibe they are trying to exude is a joke given the treatment we were given. This will be our last time.
