"Take someone to Monterrey Bar and they’ll think you're the kind of person who knows secrets. It’s impossible to stumble upon this spot, which is located inside The Standard, in a dark, windowless room with a horseshoe bar and a record player. It’s an appropriately sexy room to slowly sip a very good $24 cocktail. They do justice to the classics—paper planes, sazeracs, and vespers—but also have some unique rotating options. It’s not the most economical cocktail bar in the city, but if intimacy and atmosphere are a priority, go here." - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo
"There are so many reasons why Monterry Bar is a perfect martini bar. It’s dim, it’s sexy, it’s intimate, it’s inside a fancy hotel (The Standard), and it has a long U-shaped bar where you can make smoldering eye contact with that handsome stranger over there. They also have a really impressive cocktail menu with a stellar vesper. But the great bartenders here will be happy to make your martini any way you prefer. During Happy Hour, they even offer mini martinis." - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo
"If you’re looking for a sophisticated cocktail bar that’ll make you feel slightly James Bond-ish, head to Monterrey Bar. The upscale cocktail spot is located in The Standard. The small room can seat just over 20 people, with couch seating, a beautiful T-shaped bar, and dim lighting that’ll make you want to dramatically sip your cocktail like an evil villain slowly revealing their evil plot. Those cocktails are great and also range from $18 to $24. So, you know—not cheap." - ryan pfeffer, mariana trabanino
"Maybe you’re one of the many 30-somethings who can’t afford a Standard membership. And now that they don’t do pool day passes anymore (sorry to break the news), the only way you can spend time at the beautiful property is as a customer of the restaurant or bar. We prefer the bar. It might not have Lido’s waterfront view, but the cocktails are good and the vintage cocktail lounge design will appeal to anyone who binges Architectural Digest home tour videos." - ryan pfeffer
"Here’s another Happy Hour mini martini, and another that feels like a medium martini (once again, not complaining). Monterrey Bar in the lobby of The Standard does its mini martini Happy Hour from 6pm to 8pm Monday through Friday. These are the priciest mini martinis on the guide by a dollar. But for that extra dollar, you get atmosphere. Dim lighting, a vinyl soundtrack, and a high chance of overhearing tourists recount the harrowing tale of their Uber from the airport make this place one of our favorite spots in Miami to drink any size martini." - ryan pfeffer
