Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: April 26 | Eater DC

"When ski-lodge nachos fail, the nachos supremos at Montezuma in Gettysburg hit: a towering mix of beef and chicken, beans, white queso, generous sour cream and guacamole (guac just OK — focus on the excellent house salsa)." - Eater Staff

Google
had an amazing experience at Montezuma Mexican Restaurant! The street tacos were bursting with flavor—fresh, perfectly seasoned, and authentically delicious. I also tried the Delmar fajitas, which were sizzling, tender, and packed with all the right spices. And I couldn’t resist finishing with the fried ice cream—crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and absolutely decadent. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made me feel right at home. If you’re in Gettysburg and craving authentic Mexican cuisine, Montezuma is a must-visit!

Google
I cannot say enough good things about this place. First and foremost is that the food came out fast. The chips were very fresh and so it was the food. The serving size was really good and I was able to make this two meals. Especially for the cost this is very affordable and reasonable for other places and what they charge. Call the staff was nice. There's nothing that I think that this place could do better. Even the refired beans were amazing and that's always a hit or miss.

Google
Chips and salsa were brought immediately to the table taste delicious iced teas were fresh brewed and best of all how the Carne asada plate…..which is very good and the Carnitas tacos was very delicious and the sauce that came with it……, overall great authentic Mexican food

In full transparency, we just moved to this area after 15 years in Texas. I wanted to love this restaurant, as we miss great Mexican food. The Pro: Very fast service, even though they were very busy with a line on a Sunday afternoon. The Con: The restaurant could use a good cleaning. The menus, booth and floors were very sticky. And the bathroom was very dirty. The Neutral: The food. It was OK. The chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. The guacamole was very smooth and tasteless. The fish tacos were OK. The Fiesta Sampler included mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers? Why? We will give Montezuma another try. Hopefully there are other Mexican restaurant options in Gettysburg.

It's a fun chain. The food is good, the portions too. The service is excellent. It's a nice place to stop if you are in Gettysburg.

Google
We have been going here for years. Excellent food. Excellent employees. The place has always been clean and everyone is always friendly. The food has always come out in a timely manner and wonderfully hot and ready to eat! One of the place places in town!

Google
A staple for me when I visit Gettysburg. I’ve enjoyed several of their dishes and will continue to visit. The only thing that would make it better, is if I could order a nice margarita on the side. They do not serve alcoholic beverages.

Google
We had a late lunch with our family of five. Seating was available, the restaurant was nice and clean. The host greeted us and seated us with a smile and our waiter was very attentive and helpful. Food was great, served hot and fresh. We are not from the area but plan on coming back next year and this will be our go to!

Yelp
If you need a Mecican food fix in Gettysburg, Montezuma is a great spot! They have a large menu and their food is delicious at reasonable prices. The guacamole, salsa, fajitas, and street tacos were all wonderful. The only thing to be aware of is that they don't have alcohol if that is important to you.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid four star choice for delicious burritos. We had the massive California steak burrito and the Azteca chicken burrito. Each was covered by delicious sauces. The free chips and salsa were also very good. No liquor served and the interior could use a little updating.

Yelp
The waitress was this side of overly attentive. I think she just didn't want to miss anything. The menu is extensive, though it mostly offers variations of the same ingredients combined in different ways- this IS Mexican food, after all. My biggest concern, however, was how quickly our meals came out. The plates were extremely hot, which left me questioning the preparation methods. Were the dishes microwaved, kept under heat lamps, or quickly reheated in an oven? When I cook a fresh meal at home, the food is hot but the edges aren't crisped and the plate certainly isn't scorching. Something about the meal prep didn't feel fresh, and overall the experience left me uneasy. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be returning.

Yelp
The workers were pointing and laughing at my sister while we were eating but the food was ok

Yelp
Worst "Mexican" I've had. We ordered "fajita salads" that were described as having "melted cheese." The other ingredients were swimming in some watery yellow sauce like it was a soup. It tasted awful. It was nothing like the description or any fajita salad I've had at other restaurants. I couldn't even eat half. The other two people in my group who ordered this dish felt the same and one of those two is VERY easy to please when it comes to food. Huge disappointment.

Yelp
Delicious food, very welcoming staff, FAST service (which is greatly appreciated when you have three hungry boys)!!!!!! We came here while visiting Gettysburg, and will definitely recommend to anyone who wants quality Mexican food :)
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy, solid mexican food! Has classic american offerings and more authentic. Appears to only have Margaritas one day a week, which was something of note for us out of towners. Out of what we ordered the tacos definitely stood out, while my burrito was more standard. But still, all excellent and a unique offering for Gettysburg! Definitely worth it if you're hoping for something other than the influx of generic american or brewpubs - this was unique and good!

Yelp
**VEGAN Review** I went here because of all the positive reviews. Maybe asking for vegan food threw off the cook? I had fajitas and it was too heavily salted. The salsa was very mediocre. I didn't finish my meal. I like Mexican food, but not from here.
google avatar

Jodie T.

Yelp
This restaurant has the best Mexican food? The portions are incredible. The churro's are yummy and the prices are reasonable the staff is amazing and they play Mexican music in the background. Wonderful customer service and fantastic food.

Yelp
I finished 2 of my 3 historical places, and it was definitely time for food. As always, I count in Yelp to guide me to the best places and it didn't disappoint. I ordered online and that was the only glitch. It didn't ask for payment info. The food wasn't ready when I arrived, and it missed one item. But I certainly enjoyed the part I did get! I base my yummy or not on carnitas, and the burrito I got had delicious chunks of perfectly seasoned pork. And plenty of them! Also some tasty filling with jalapeño bits that have ita nice kick. The rice was totally bland and plain, but I put on the small cup of salsa, which made it much better. The decor is cute, the service friendly, and the price was great.

Yelp
First off the food was terrible, the guacamole was watery, the fajita vegetables wilted, and we had several flies landing on our food throughout dinner. The server asked me 5 different times in 3 minutes if I was ready to order and we had just picked up our menus. during dinner water had dripped onto my daughters shoulder and we both looked up to see a lot of the ceiling tiles had significant water damage. Montezuma used to be a favorite spot, sad to see things change this drastically

Yelp
Wow this place was amazing. Food was slamming. Fast service. Place was clean and authentic Mexican. Highly recommended

Yelp
Use to live in Gettysburg and this was one of my favorite date night spots. Best Mexican food in the area. Big portions and the prices are decent. Had lunch here today for the first time in over 12 years. Didn't give 5 stars because they don't give you rice and beans with every dish like they use to. Still great service, still great food, still good prices.

Kepra J.

Yelp
I'm from Az, didn't expect yummy salsa and Mexican food in Gettysburg!! Came in Saturday at 12:30. Place was busy, but the staff took excellent care of us. Drinks stayed full! Chips/queso and salsa were great! Had the lunch fajitas and the lunch carnitas. Carnitas were cooked to perfection!! Crunchy and flavorful. The fajitas were the perfect amount! Not too much food. The meat was well seasoned and not huge pieces. The beans were very good!! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Food was excellent! A little hot inside and the table was super sticky but the food is top notch, maybe next time will get it to go if in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely the one of the hottest Mexican restaurants in Gettysburg for about a decade now. Great food and great atmosphere, great service. Only downside being that this place was busted recently for some employees being illegal immigrants.
google avatar

Yelp
Granted I've only tried one thing on the menu but this is one of my top 5 Mexican restaurants in the US. This place is great!!! I've worked in Mexico, lived near the border for most of my life, and traveled a bunch so as a gringa, I know what I'm talking about when I say this place has amazing authentic flavor. I was shocked but delighted to find it in Gettysburg, PA. I had the Enchiladas Aztecas with both sauces. I am a lover of mole but I also think chipotle flavor is one of the best ever (as long as it's not too hot). I couldn't decide on which sauce I wanted so I asked for both. So glad I did that. I still can't decide. My father had the Enchiladas Supremas (I think that's what they were called) and enjoyed his immensely too. Looking forward to trying more dishes next time I visit.

Yelp
We have dined here (in Gettysburg location) a couple of time before Covid and have ordered take out dinners here about a dozen times since Covid. Menu is varied, service is good, and ambiance for dining in is nice. Our favorites are the fajitas. We especially like the chicken and shrimp fajitas which are served with generous helpings of refried beans and Mexican fried rice. Prices are moderate.....the Special Montezuma for Two (Shrimp, steak, chicken and chorizo with bell peppers, tomatoes and onions) is a good deal at $33.20 I would have rated five stars if the Steak Fajitas were better....but we have found the steak to be tough, dry and over cooked. However the shrimp and chicken fajitas are excellent. Don't have any photos but will add some the next time we order take out

Genevieve S.

Yelp
We went to Montezuma today and we had an awful experience. The waitress was nice, but the food was subpar to say the least. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with enchilada sauce and it was just a plate of lettuce (a massive amount) and cheese sopping with enchilada sauce and sour cream smeared on it. I couldn't even see the enchiladas under it. It wasn't seasoned nor proportioned well. The worst part was when we ordered the Del Mar Tacos. They were advertised as being filled with crab, shrimp, and scallops. When they brought them out, the tacos had frozen shrimp and scallops. Something was very off with the scallops. It was also filled with rubbery imitation crab meat. We even asked for the menu again to check and see if it said it was imitation crab meat, but it said it was actual crab meat. When we went up to check out, we showed the manager (?) the menu and told her that we got imitation crab meat. All she said was "okay". I said if you're going to be giving imitation crab meat and scallops like that, you should probably label it as imitation crab meat. I told her we were charge full price for crab meat. Then all she said was "okay, bye". It is what it is, but both of us felt extremely sick afterwards. If you do go which I highly recommend you don't, don't get anything with seafood.

Yelp
I'm from Los Angeles and this place is legit delicious Mexican food. The asada meat in the two dishes we got were moist and full of flavor. Bring your appetite and try the huge burrito because it's delicious and massive. Mucho Glacias

Yelp
We had driven by this restaurant many times and it was always packed. I checked the yelp reviews and spoke to a couple locals who recommended the food. We went on a Monday evening around 6 and like always it was packed. The parking lot is small, but there is some street parking. It is basically what you would expect walking into a Mexican restaurant. The decor is nothing special but the restaurant is clean and bigger inside than it looks. They also have some outdoor seating depending on the weather. There is no alcohol for sale but you may bring your own. We were seated quickly (I thought there would be a wait). They give each table free chips and homemade salsa which is very tasty. We ordered our drinks a coke and iced tea. For dinner I ordered the burrito Cancun with steak which was delicious. The steak was seasoned so well and just fell apart in my mouth. It also has chorizo and is topped with a tasty cheese sauce and pick de gallo with a generous amount of rice as a side. The chorizo gives a nice little kick to the burrito with the cheese sauce giving a rich smooth cooling effect. My wife ordered Enchiladas supremas and loved them. We both shared and loved every thing we ate. Our server was fantastic and very friendly while having like 10 tables at once. It's not often we go out to dinner spend $40 and get incredible food and service. If your in the area definitely stop by and get a great meal.

Yelp
DO NOT go to this Montezumas in Gettysburg ! I ordered queso and chips to go for my family, we got home and ate a little less than half and found a bug/roach in the queso! Called and informed them and the woman on the phone was laughing when explaining to her manager(she must've thought she was on hold). They stated that they could replace it with something else lol ..Absolutely not !!!! Terrible customer service and they have BUGS in the food ! 0 STARS !!
google avatar

Gary H.

Yelp
This is a dual review as my wife did not enjoy her meal but I loved mine. In the door we found the restaurant clean and very cozy. The staff was very friendly and the menu had great choices with all the favorites. We were greeted with tortilla chips and salsa which was good, not awesome but good. My wife ordered The Chimichanga Fried. She said what meat was in it had decent flavor but everything was so soggy it was, in her words, "A hot mess." The meal came with Guacamole and other stuff but it was topped with this very thin cheese sauce that just made everything soup. It didn't even look appealing. (See picture) I ordered The Steak Buritto Azteka stuffed with steak & onions topped with a Mole Sauce and sour cream (see picture) which was absolutely wonderfull. The steak was a little tough but doable but the mole sauce was incredible. We will definitely come back
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
Delicious!! The jumbo burrito (pictured) is truly jumbo. Flavors are good, service was excellent, food came out quickly, and the fajitas for 2 were enough to feed 3 adults. Only is that the decor is in serious need of cleaning and the ceiling looks in desperate need of repair. 100% worth the $!
google avatar

Brent D.

Yelp
If you are expecting great Mexican food this is not the place. Pace pecante for salsa and melted processed cheese over the nachos, Chips and meat were good and people were very nice! You can order fresh spicy salsa:) Not bad I guess but not eat we are used to from the West.
google avatar

Gerg P.

Yelp
Decent meals and good service. Have Arturor be your server. This location serves Mole! Pretty good, could use more cinnamon. Basic Mexican dishes. No burro chimi. Good beef and chicken. Nice south of the border feel with the help of the flies.

Jeanette W.

Yelp
The service was great. We were a party of six and it did not take long to get a booth large enough for us. The food portion sizes were large and came out quick (and hot). FYI - it is a bring your own wine place.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and everything looked great and I had a hard time deciding. The food was amazing, the chips were fresh and hot and the salsa had a great taste. Service was great and friendly. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because the waitress didn't write down our order and she got it wrong. It was ok because what I got was one of the items I was trying to decide between. But I dislike when they don't write down the order, too much of an option for error. My fajita salad that I ended up with was amazing, but it wasn't what I ordered.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
The food here is very nice and more authentic than some. Great folks work here and they provide fast and friendly service. Ambiance is ok, but a nice place overall.

Yelp
A friend wanted to check out Gettysburg and later grab a bite to eat. I've been a few times, but never ate anywhere in the area so we looked to see what our options were on a Sunday night. We decided that Mexican sounded good so we headed to Montezuma. There was plenty of parking as they have their own lot. We were greeted instantly and sat at a booth that was roomy for just the two of us. My buddy wanted a margherita and learned quick they did not serve alcohol. That's no issue with me cause I don't drink, but just an FYI if you do. Our server was friendly and attentive. We always had water refills and were checked in to see if we needed anything. I ordered a shrimp burrito and a side of queso for the complimentary tortilla chips. The chips came out warm which I like. The salsa was good, although I do prefer a medium or hot option. It was very mild so if spicey isn't your thing you'll be ok. The food came out quick and was hot! I really enjoyed my shrimp burrito. Shrimp were seasoned well and I didn't find anything overpowering. I like how they add some queso atop the burrito. I requested no sour cream which they left off. That's actually a big plus cause I make that request at other places and they still put it on the plate. The portions are very big and you'll leave feeling full! Overall, I thought Montezuma was a good spot with welcoming and friendly staff. I'd return if in that part of town and I'm craving Mexican!
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
Fast. Tasty Mexican food in Gettysburg. Did takeout and it was hot and included chips and salsa for every order!!

April R.

Yelp
I wish I would have taken a picture of my food. The beans I received were like . I couldn't believe how runny it was. The cheese enchilada was good and the taste of the beans was okay when mixed with the rice. The tortilla chips were stale. I would not recommend this place If your are craving Mexican. Not worth the money.

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Great food, great service but they did not serve alcohol. Super fast. Great chips and salsa. If they had margaritas I would rate 5 stars
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
This restaurant appears to have been a taco Viva or Taco Bell in a prior life. The staff understands both Spanish and English and the food has good portions as well as reasonably good taste. It seems to cater to the college crowd. I was disappointed that I could not substitute for some of the items I did not wish to eat, But my server told me he was unable to make any changes. I ask him in both Spanish and English and he answered me they same way.
google avatar

Michael O.

Yelp
The food was excellent! I got the Texan Fajita, which had shrimp, chicken, and beef (pictured). It was really good. The beef and nachos were also good! The food came out lightning fast, and our waitress was amazing! It is BYOB if you want a drink. I would have gave this place five stars, but their vents in ceiling were dripping down condensation. Also, I think their ceiling tiles all need replaced (looked dingy) to give it a fresher place to dine. I would go back despite that one star missing! ;)

Yelp
Delicious. Authentic. Big plates. Friendly service. Nice staff :-) Delicious. Authentic. Big plates. Friendly service. Nice staff :-)

Yelp
As a Latina raised in Los Angeles, I *never* expected I'd find delicious, AUTHENTIC Mexican food in GETTYSBURG of all places!!! I'm bummed it takes 2000 miles to have it again. A must visit when in PA!
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Love this place. I am not a fan of the Mexican restaurants in Hanover so we always travel to Gettysburg for Mexican. The service is always great very respectful and well mannered staff! We came during Covid and I was impressed with all the precautions the staff took. The menus virtual (smart phone) all staff were gloved and masked. The food is always fresh and hot. Portions are just right. Every bite is packed with flavor as well. I definitely recommend this place. The parking can be tight but circling the block or parking down the street is worth it. En

Lauren F.

Yelp
Food was delicious and they easily accommodated my special requests without a fuss and it was correct! Typical Mexican restaurant decor. Staff was very nice and professional!
google avatar

Kristina R.

Yelp
Maybe we're just spoiled by having experienced better Mexican food before but this place just didn't do it for us. We won't be back. We were a little disappointed to see they didn't serve alcohol once we arrived. No big deal. Moved on to dinner. The chips and salsa was okay but I thought it was weird they didn't serve their chips warm. We ordered nachos as an appetizer and barely ate them. The meat was mushy and every other topping was just slopped on top in clumps. Onto the main course. Again- okay but nothing to write home about. Steak tacos were pretty dry and had no toppings at all- not even onion or a lime wedge. The rice was probably the best thing we ate all night. After leaving we found our card was double charged and this still hasn't been resolved. I guess we'll have to file a fraud charge with the bank. Overall... There are better options. Next time we'll go to Frederick instead.
google avatar

Francesca J.

Yelp
The service was good, and the staff was wearing masks. Also the chips and salsa provided was delicious. Cons: The fajita plate had a long hair in it, the rice and beans were not good, baby carrots should not be in a fajita, the guacamole was packaged and tasteless, the hot sauce had no flavour nor heat, and the toilet needed an upgrade as it was rusted through. Also, I got diarrhea after eating the food.
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican cuisine! Every award that is placed on their door has been well learned. The ice tea that they serve was the best iced tea I have ever had at any restaurant. Staff was courteous polite and quick.
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
We came up for a weekend trip and decided to swing by Montezuma's for dinner we were not disappointed. We ordered queso to start and I thought it was delicious. The wait staff was attentive to refill the salsa and bring you chips. I ordered a burrito platter with shredded beef that was incredibly flavorful. My friend ordered the California burrito that was the size of his forearm and was loaded with steak, chorizo, chicken, bell peppers, rice beans and guacamole. The portions were huge! 4 stars because the food wasn't as great as it could be, and you had to BYOB.
google avatar

Alexis R.

Yelp
This is by far one of our favorite Mexican food spots. This place pops and the people are so nice. We live 40 minutes away and still always chose this Mexican restaurant. If you don't live close, make a special trip to try it out. If you live close, then I am jealous of you because the food is amazing.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Very typical Mexican family owned. Kids everywhere. (Not a bad thing)i was seated and welcomed when i came in. Service was very polite all the way through my meal. Meal came out in great time and was hot and look really good. But the flavor was a little bland. Everything was good with portion size and the place was clean. I think i will adjust my ordering next time.
google avatar

Kenneth S.

Yelp
In DC, where carne asada runs 22 bucks, it's nice to get away to a small town that has a decent Mexican place with reasonable prices. When I saw a yelp review where a woman decried that her wimp of a boyfriend could not finish the California Burrito, it became my mission in life to order it and finish it. When we pulled into the parking lot, I saw a license plate for Pennsylvania and said, wow! You know rhis place is good if that guy came all the way from Pennsylvania. I guess I was really tired ... But, then they brought out chips and salsa and we ordered a large queso, which was delicious and more than enough for two people. The Cali burrito was almost a foot long and filled with rice, beans, guac, sour cream, steak, chicken, chorizo and peppers. It was good but it was almost too much going on. Oh, and it was topped with enchilada sauce and more queso. I got halfway through and gave up to the gods of sodium who were telling me it was time to stop.
google avatar

Andie C.

Yelp
This restaurant has Great food, and they serve it really fast! Very busy place. A local favorite!

Vigrinia H.

Yelp
Definitely the best Mexican restaurant in town! Everything is fresh and taste so good. We are in love in its food and will come back and try more different dishes next time We enjoy its burritos and tacos!
google avatar

Ethan R.

Yelp
We were out road-tripping and decided to go get Mexican and lemme tell ya when I say that the food here deserves a 6/5. Never had I gotten a burrito the size of a load of bread and ate the whole thing if you're in Gettysburg and you like authentic Mexican make sure you stop here
